Welcome

Rick:

Welcome to the intersection of faith and the culture, this is WallBuilders Live! Find out more about us at our websites WallBuilders.com and WallBuildersLive.com. Here at WallBuilders Live, we’re talking about these hottest topics on policy, faith, and the culture, always looking at it from Biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective.

We’re here with David Barton, America’s premiere historian and the founder of WallBuilders. Also, Tim Barton national speaker, pastor, and president of WallBuilders. And my name’s Rick Green, I’m a former Texas state rep.

Visit those websites and you’ll find out we’re a pro-family organization presenting America’s forgotten history and heroes with an emphasis on our religious moral and constitutional heritage.

Today is Friday and we like to do what we call Good News Friday on Fridays because it’s a chance for David and Tim Barton to bring together a list of good news you probably have not heard, definitely haven’t heard on most media channels, but maybe you picked up on a little bit of it here and there.

I always love these days guys. I like I like the good news, it helps to lift my spirits a little bit. I know I shouldn’t have to see the results. John Quincy Adams says, “Duty is ours, results are God’s.” But my human nature side really likes to get this good news.

Starting A High School Club

Tim:

It is encouraging. It kind of feels at times like the guy digging post holes along the beach. You just kind get discouraged, “I want to see some results at some point.” And certainly, in the faithfulness of God, there are often times results happening all around us. We’re just not always aware of them. Which is why we love Good News Friday because we get to share so many of the good things happening around the nation that largely go unnoticed.

One of those is actually something that happened here in Texas not very long ago. Flower Mound, Texas, the high school there, the ISD, they have mini clubs. Guys, I’m going to ask a question.  If you were in high school today and you got to have any club you wanted, be a member of, start one, or however you wanted to do it, what kind of club would you start? Any club you wanted. So, hobby, activity, academic, etc. What kind of club? Rick, what kind of club would you want to be a part of or what kind of club would you want to start?

Rick:

Spider Solitaire Champions Are Us.

Tim:

Spider Solitaire. Ok, ok.

Rick:

I’m kidding! I don’t know. I’d probably start a shooting club actually.

Tim:

I kinda suspected that was going to be your call.

Rick:

You didn’t expect the spider solitaire?

Tim:

No, that did get me. So, I figured shooting. So, Dad, what kind of club would you start?

David:

Two answers. The club I did start when I was in high school was a Bible club.

Tim:

See here’s what’s interesting. I figured you were going to say Bible and I figured Rick was going to say guns.

David:

That’s 68 though. If I just started something of interest I would probably start some kind of a travel club. Where we would go places in southern Utah, to the canyons there, or Waco tanks, or Guadalupe Mountains. I’d probably start to travel.

How You Fund Raise Money For High School Clubs

Tim:

So, Rick with your gun club and Dad, let’s say this travel club. So, if you’re going to do a club how do you get the money to make it happen?

David:

Oh, it’s really easy. You rob a bank.

Rick:

Did you say high school or college? I missed the first question.

Tim:

That would be easier for Rick’s club because they have the guns.

David:

That’s right. Obviously, you go to sponsors.

Tim:

You go to sponsors, sure. So, Flower Mound ISD, I didn’t even know this kind of club existed.

Rick:

Our sponsors would be Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid. Then we can have the guns and travel.

Tim:

Well, so for Flower Mound ISD they did not have Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid as their sponsors. They did not go out in a blaze of glory. Rather, they have a bass fishing club. Which I feel like is probably unique to school districts that are relatively close to lakes. Growing up home schooled we did not have a bass fishing club.

David:

I don’t remember seeing a fishing club in western Kansas out there.

Tim:

No. Maybe they have corn shucking or something.

David:

They have irrigation.  I don’t think they have lakes.

‘Jesus’ On A T-Shirt Isn’t Allowed At This School

Tim:

So, this bass fishing club so they’re getting sponsors so this club can exist. So they go to First Choice Marine. Now, that is a boat club, it’s not the military. But First Choice Marine, a boat club, and so they get a sponsor from First Choice Marine. But part of the deal with the sponsorship is the guy said, “Hey, I’m going to buy you guys shirts. I’m going to give you all kinds of stuff, but I want my logo to be a part of the shirt.”

That’s no big deal because certainly if somebody is a sponsor you can put that sponsorship logo on. Well, the problem was that First Choice Marine, part of their logo, the name Jesus appears on their logo. And that was a problem for the school district.

David:

Free speech for them.

Tim:

They said, “Woah, that’s religion. You can’t have religion, that’s unconstitutional.” Fortunately, First Liberty, our good friend Kelly Shackelford and his organization they stepped in and all they had to do was write a letter and they said, “Hey, guys, really?”

And by the way, let me point out, that the reason that First Liberty got involved in the case is because the man with First Choice Marine, his name is Wes Jones. Wes was told, “You can’t do that.” And instead of acquiescing and saying, “Oh well, ok. I guess I I’ll just take Jesus off my logo so the kids can still have my logo and sponsorship.” He said, “No, you can’t tell me I can’t have the name Jesus in my logo.”

David:

Good for him!

Standing Up For Our First Amendment Right

Tim:

So he goes to First Liberty and they understand constitutional law, First Amendment, write the school letter, explain to the school that they have an unconstitutional position. “He does have the freedom of speech, he does have this First Amendment right.”

So the school quickly steps back and says, “Yeah, you can have Jesus as part of the club logo. That’s ok, you can do that.” So this was a victory that we won. But it’s significant because first of all, you had a guy who was willing to stand up and say, “I’m not going to take Jesus out of my logo.” You have a school district that recognizes once they are informed that this is actually a position that we can’t defend, going against this First Amendment right. And you have students who actually in the midst of this they also wanted to have part of their school support and sponsorship include Jesus. Because some of these students fought to defend this. So this is good news on a lot of fronts. But this is a bass fishing club in Texas that can have Jesus as part of their sponsorship

Rick:

Man, Jesus and fishing both. I mean, what more can you ask for? These guys got it good in Flower Mound.

Tim:

This is definitely one of those Peter moments of fishers of men. I don’t know if that plays in but definitely some good news coming in from Flower Mound, Texas.

Rick:

And because of individuals being willing to stand and not just cowered down. Which we talk a lot about. Christians having the courage and boldness to stand up in a culture that, frankly, it’s just not popular in many places. But honestly, I think there are more people out there looking for you to raise that banner and are willing to rally around than those that would criticize you.

So in many ways, you’re blessed to have and still have a foundation here of people that are drawn to courage and drawn to Christians standing up for their faiths.

Quick break.  We’ll be right back and get some more good news. You’re listening to WallBuilders Live!

Moment From American History

This is Tim Barton from WallBuilders with another moment from American history. The year after the American War for Independence ended we began addressing the issue of Muslim terrorists in North Africa who were attacking American ships, killing, and enslaving American seamen.

Congress dispatched John Adams and Thomas Jefferson to negotiate peace. And when they asked the Muslim ambassador the reason for the unprovoked attacks. He told them that it was written in their Qur’an. That it was their right and duty to make war upon them whenever they could be found.

Sixteen years of negotiations failed and in 1801 America sent its military to crush the terrorists. When that war ended in 1805 the first American edition of the Qur’an was published, urging Americans to read the Qur’an to see for themselves that its teachings were incompatible with the safety and peace of non-Muslims.

To see the first American Qur’an and to get more information about America’s first war on Islamic terror go to WallBuilders.com.

An Archbishop Calls Out A Catholic Representative

Rick:

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live Good News Friday today, thanks for staying with us. Tim got us started with some good news. David, you’re up but I don’t see how you’re possibly going to beat going bass fishing with Jesus. I mean that’s the best good news story we’ve had in awhile.

David:

That’s good. I’m not going to try to beat it. But I love the fact that the guy showed courage. He steps in and said, “You’re not going to push my rights out. You’re not going to push these kids out.” And kudos to him for doing that.

I’ve got some more stand up stories. This one involves New Mexico, they had a bill that was in the state legislature that dealt with a late-term abortion ban. And so in the late-term abortion ban, the bill died on a party-line vote. Three Democrats against it. Two Republicans for the ban.

One of the three Democrats, a state rep, she claimed that she voted against the bills because of her Catholic faith. That her Catholic faith caused her to vote against ending late term abortions.

So here’s what she said, “My Catholic faith teaches me women and men have the right to make their own decisions based on the dictum of their own consciences. I respect life in all forms and I firmly believe these very deep and personal complex decisions must remain with a woman, her doctors, her family, and her faith, and certainly not in the chambers of government.”

So, “I’m a Catholic, conscience says you get to make these decisions.” I love this, the archbishop, now we’re not going Bishop, we’re talking Archbishop. These are the guys that choose the pope. These are the generals at the high level.

The archbishop got a hold of his representative at the Capitol and went and called into the legislative chamber. He gave his message to his representative who communicated it. This is what he said, according to Archbishop, “We must use our conscience. But it needs to be a formed conscience.” Boy, that’s such a big statement. Not everything you believe is your conscience. Your conscience can be shaped and formed.

He said, “A lack of formed conscience can create havoc and problems, especially when a public or elected official identifies himself as Catholic and uses that to justify a vote for abortion. That person, and this is a teaching across the whole church, is themselves separating themselves.”

I mean, the Archbishop comes out and tells the legislature, “If you say you’re Catholic and you’re pro-abortion you’ve just separated yourself from the Catholic Church.” I mean, he called her out for that.

Tim:

Which, by the way, is factually true. But there just hasn’t been many people that are willing to say what was actually true.

David:

And to say it to a whole group of legislators and the legislative chambers. So, kudos. And this is Archbishop John C. Wester. Kudos to him for having the courage to stand up for what the Bible teaches. Now here’s the next one-

Rick:

And by the way, before you get to that, just want to mention to folks that just tuned in, today on Friday and missed our program on Monday. We had Father Frank Pavone with us and he actually addressed this issue of why Catholic members of Congress are so pro-abortion and talked a lot about what’s going on with the Jesuits and everything. So anyway, go to our archives and listen to that program as well. Sorry David, just wanted to mention that from the earlier this week.

Franklin Graham Likens Auschwitz To Planned Parenthood

David:

The next story you have involves a fundraiser for Planned Parenthood. At the fundraiser for Planned Parenthood is George W. Bush’s daughter Barbara. And so Barbara, the daughter, is at Planned Parenthood raising money for Planned Parenthood and pro-abortion causes, puts her in complete opposition to her father. But that’s what she’s doing.

Guess what. Franklin Graham has something to say. He says, “Planned Parenthood is the number one abortion provider in the United States. Raising funds for this organization is like raising money to fund a Nazi death camp. It’s like Auschwitz except for innocent babies in their mothers’ wombs. Reports say they perform over 300,000 abortions per year and this is the organization whose employees were caught on video trying to sell baby parts over wine. Disgusting.” Kudos to Franklin Graham.

Kudos to Franklin Graham.

Rick:

You know, we’ve talked about courage, Christians with courage. In fact, it was on a program with him a couple of weeks ago with that the movie they did, “Facing Darkness.” But there you go again, another area different area of the culture where he’s dealing with courage.

Tim:

And let me point out, that even to me is even more remarkable good news. Because this is exactly what we talked about with some of the early founding pastors. When you had Christian leaders who were the ones speaking out with boldness and that’s been lacking for years, generations, I don’t know how long.

It has been so lacking in culture to have these incredible, Christian leaders, well-recognized Christian leaders, taking a morally clear position on a very morally clear issue and it’s not confusing.

But now you have leaders standing up and saying, “No, this is what is right, this is what is wrong, and this is what we ought to be doing.” And now you have one of the most well-recognized Christian leaders, maybe in the world, who’s bringing more clear to the issue. That’s incredible.

David:

And in this culture, you are told you cannot compare anything to the Nazis or anything that Auschwitz, and he did it. He went against the whole politically correct-

Rick:

And he was right.

David:

And he’s right. He called out President Bush’s daughter, he called out Planned Parenthood, he actually called out the Nazi death camps to compare with Planned Parenthood. That’s a lot of guts.

The Baptist Denomination Standing Up

One more that goes with guts. We have the Texas Baptist churches look like they’re expelling two churches from their convention here in Texas because the two churches have open door policies welcoming LGBTQ people.

So that’s not a Biblical position to embrace that lifestyle and say, “That’s ok.” You have two Baptist churches in Texas saying, “We’re not doing that.” And the Baptist denomination in Texas is saying, “Ok, you guys are not going to be part of us anymore.” I mean, there’s some more courage.

Now, there are three stories in this segment about a Catholic standing up, about Baptist denomination in Texas standing up, and about Franklin Graham standing up. Who would have thought that it would make national good news to stand up for the Bible? We do that all the time.

There used to be what churches did, what pastors did. Now when a pastor does that is so unusual that it becomes good news. But man, how cool is that we get at least those guys with some guts and courage.

Tim:

And especially good news because you have people that are setting a significant example for others to follow.

David:

That’s right.

Tim:

When you have leaders of this stature doing something this significant it really sets a tone and a culture of moral relativism when they say, “No, there needs to be some more clarity on these issues. There is right and wrong. So this is an incredible example and really such good news.

And hopefully, inspirational to others to go do the same thing, right? To stand boldly as well. That’s why we share that good news is to encourage them to know there’s a place in their community, their particular church, or in their family, or their business, or wherever they are right now, where they’re going to have an opportunity to stand with boldness as well. We want you to know that there are others around the country in the world doing the same. Stay with us, we’ll be right back with more good news here on WallBuilders Live!

Patriot Academy

Have you noticed the vacuum of leadership in America? It’s not just that we have a few bad leaders taking us away from our founding principles and leading us down a road of destruction. The real challenge is that we’re looking around for leaders of principle to step up and too often no one is there.

This is a generational Challenge.  And we must have a generational solution.  God is raising up a generation of young leaders with a passion for impacting the world around them. They’re crying out for the mentorship and leadership training they need. And we need to equip them for the purpose God has laid on their hearts.

Patriot Academy was created to meet that need. You, the listeners of Wallbuilders Live, have supported Patriot Academy over the years.  You have sent your children and grandchildren to the program and the results have been remarkable.

Patriot Academy graduates now serve in state capitals around America, in the halls of Congress, in business, in the film industry, in the pulpit, in every area of the culture. They’re leading effectively and impacting the world around them.

Patriot Academy is now expanding across the nation and now is your chance to experience this life-changing week that trains champions to change the world. Visit PatriotAcademy.com for dates and locations. Our core program is still for young leaders 16 to 25 years old, but we also now have a citizen track for adults. So visit the website today to learn more. Help us fill the void of leadership in America. Join us in training champions to change the world at PatriotAcademy.com.

Massachusetts Changed Their Website To Acknowledge Religious Beliefs

Rick:

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live! It’s Good News Friday, thanks for staying with us. Back with David and Tim for some more good news. I think David did that last segment. Tim, you’re up.

Tim:

Ok, I’ve got one from Massachusetts. And this is related to churches in Massachusetts that were doing community outreach programs. And guys, if you think about churches and community outreach programs, if you can just imagine how offensive that probably is to people in the community that churches want to reach out and love them. I can just imagine all of the offended and hurt feelings.

Well, actually, the city came against these churches. Four different churches represented in this lawsuit. The city came against these churches and said, “You’re not allowed to do any of these outreaches.”

Now, I’m going to pose a question. What grounds would the city have for telling these churches they could not do community outreach is anymore? What do you guys think?

David:

I would say their values that are in opposition to the state of Massachusetts. Any church is going to have values-

Tim:

Ok, so, let me throw this out. What about if one of the churches was doing a spaghetti dinner?

Rick:

So feeding people?

David:

That clearly is bad doctrine. So what in the midst of this spaghetti dinner might have caused the city to say-

David:

A prayer?

Tim:

Well, it’s actually something almost that ridiculous, I would even say almost more ridiculous.

Rick:

A moment of silence.

Tim:

Well, no, no, it’s because at this spaghetti dinner they had male and female restrooms.

Rick:

Oh my. You mean actually they actually distinguished between the sexes.

Tim:

And it offended the city’s gender policy and gender guidelines. So they were told that they could not do spaghetti dinners for the community, for the needy, for the homeless. You can’t give out anything, you can’t help the community. If you are going to have male and female restrooms.

Rick:

We have lost our minds. No, no, Massachusetts has lost their minds.

Tim:

That’s right.

Rick:

But we’re seeing it all over the country.

Tim:

So, fortunately-

Rick:

I’m looking for the good news, I’m hanging on by a thread here,  Bro.

Tim:

So Alliance Defending Freedom gets involved.

Rick:

Ok, now I can sense some good news.

Tim:

That’s right. So when these guys get involved oftentimes we have a change in policy. And so the city has changed their policy but not only have they changed their policy they updated the website to reflect that churches are allowed to express views consistent with their faith and operate their facilities in a manner that doesn’t violate their core religious beliefs.

David:

Man, that’s like Massachusetts getting the scarlet letter on their forehead to admit something like that.

Tim:

That is huge! They changed the city website to acknowledge, “We now are going to respect and uphold the religious convictions and beliefs of the churches. And they may even follow through their practices, their outreach, they can do it according to their convictions.” That is hugely good news.

Rick:

John Hancock would be proud. Sam Adams would be proud.

Tim:

And by the way guys, this was from Boston, Massachusetts. So this is a big deal in Massachusetts. Boston is changing their position for these four churches. that’s incredible.

Rick:

Good stuff good stuff! Once again, it’s people standing up and being bold! In this case, the attorneys at ADF, probably this church, calling on them being willing to not just say, “Ok, fine, we’ll do whatever you want.” Again, it’s Christians being bold in the culture makes a difference. Quick break, we’ll be right back, more good news on WallBuilders Live!

Avalon Project

Tim:

Hey, guys, this is Tim Barton with WallBuilders. I know you hear my dad and Rick talk a lot about our Founding Fathers about the original intent of our nation, a constitutional heritage that we have. And really we’ve seen how far we slipped away from that. And I know a lot of us as we hear my dad and Rick talk think, “I wish there was a place that I could go where I could see these documents and I could read and learn about the Founding Fathers firsthand.  See the things they did.”

I want to give you some websites today that can help you accomplish that very thing. If you get online you can go to places like Library of Congress and you can look under their century of lawmaking or historical documents. You can go to the Avalon Project, to the Founders Constitution, Google Books, or even the internet archives.

Or you can just go to WallBuilders.com. We have a section for our library. And under that section, we have different subgroups for historical documents, historical writings, even a place where you can get helpful links to find out more information about other websites.  Where you can do research for yourself and find the truth for yourself. Friends, this is the time that we need to know who we are and where we came from. WallBuilders.com is a great place to go.

The Shockingly Conservative Canadian Candidate

Rick:

We’re back on WallBuilders Live! Thanks for staying with us for this final segment of good news. David, you’re up, Bro. What’s our last bit of good news?

David:

I’m going to leave the country for a little bit to talk about some election results that really are interesting. Canada, we’ve seen them go through cycles over the last 15 to 20 years. They get really liberal and when they do they go after churches and they throw pastors in jail for saying, “Marriage is between a man and woman.” And then the people react and they put conservatives back in.   And then they’re there for a while and then the liberals come back in.

So, the liberals are back in right now and have been in for a while.  And so, I think their wackiness is starting to get them in trouble again.  So you have a race in Ontario, there is a race for their parliament there.  And in that parliamentary race the winning margin in that race, because you have multiple candidates, and so this is not a majority wins kind of a seat it’s the plurality. Who ever gets the highest percentage wins.

The highest vote in the last 10 years has been 41.8%. So that’s what the winning candidate got. And that winning candidate has been there now for those last 10 years. A progressive candidate. Progressive simply means wacky big government, secular, socialistic. So that’s all the progressive is anywhere in the world that’s essentially what you’re talking about.

So there’s there’s somebody running against this guy, I’m just quoting him here, “I will be a pro-life and pro-family politician. I’ll be a voice for common sense, for pro-family policies, and concerns. And I’ll never waver in my support of parents as primary educators. And I will strive to ensure that parental rights are respected in education.”

Now, in a socialist country, that’s just wrong on every level. I mean, you’re pro-life, pro-family, you’re pro-home school, and you think parents have the primary responsibility to educate.

So he runs and he gets elected with 54% of the vote. Wow. And he’s a 19-year-old homeschooler. So I love it. A 19-year-old homeschooler, landslide victory, biggest margin in 10 years in the race. They’ve been winning forty-one point, he gets 54% smackdown.

So so that’s a good piece of news coming out of Canada. Maybe the pendulum is swinging back to common sense even up there.

Rick:

No doubt. Maybe, Tim, we need to we need to make a trip up there and do a Patriot Academy up there. We’ve had a student come from Canada to one of our Patriot Academies. But maybe we get this 19-year-old to help us train more of their young people on these values.

Tim:

That would be a really fun trip to take, there’s no doubt. Canada is so beautiful I’d have to learn some new vocabulary, aye?

David:

One word, you’d have to learn one word.

Rick:

And we can’t take our guns. That’s the worst part.

Tim:

But you know, it’s interesting, because Canada does a lot of hunting so we will have to figure out how that nuance works. And their Constitution is a little different. If we give the core principles, principles that work in every nation no matter where you are, the principles of freedom, those core values of limited government. And apparently, home schooling also paying off-

David:

Pro-life homeschool.

Tim:

Oh my goodness, incredible good news up in Canada.

Tim:

Fantastic! Thank you all for your research and all this good news and for bringing it to us here on the program! Folks who are listening at home if you’d like more good news visit our website WallBuilders Live.com  You can go into the archives there for past Friday programs to get some more good news.
