Faith and the Culture

Rick:

Welcome to the intersection of faith and the culture. It’s WallBuilders Live where we are taking on the hot topics of the day from a biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective. I’m Rick Green, former Texas legislator, and America’s Constitution coach, normally here with David Barton, America’s premier historian and our founder at WallBuilders, and Tim Barton, national speaker and pastor and president of WallBuilders.

But today, the three of us are just going to kind of step aside and let Bob McEwen take the stage, Congressman Bob McEwen from Ohio, phenomenal guy, we talked about yesterday, just a wealth of wisdom and an incredible application of founding principles and biblical principles. I just love learning from Congressman McEwen. I always joke with him about the fact that I steal more material from him than anyone else other than David Barton. So, anyways, just good stuff. It’s truth. And we love to share it.

And so Congressman McEwen is actually speaking out at the ProFamily Legislators Conference, is from just a few weeks ago, and we wanted to bring it to you, our listeners right here on Wall builders live. So let’s just jump in right where we left off yesterday. Congressman Bob McEwen speaking at the ProFamily Legislators Conference.

ProFamily Legislators Conference

Bob:

In a socialist country, what is that government? Control of the tools of production. So an American car is expensive. How could you afford an expensive car? Well, you had to be in business. Who has been in business? Somebody who the government has a relationship. So, therefore, the person who’s walking along, he sees a rich person going by an American car, he knows that that person has money because he has a relationship with the government. That’s what socialism is. Therefore, they hate the rich. That’s you and I.

Socialism in Mexico

If we go to Mexico, you and I can’t go in the oil business in Mexico, we can’t go in the grocery business, we can’t go in the trucking business, we can’t go in the pipeline business, we can’t go into business at all in Mexico. Why? Because it’s socialist government-control. And so you have very wealthy people who have deals with the politicians, who then have the certificates to do those various businesses and everybody else lives in utter poverty. That’s the way socialism works. So they’re willing to walk over cut glass and barbed wire and float leaky boats just to get to America.

You can float into the long beach harbor on eight o’clock in the morning from Vietnam, you can own three, seven-elevens by midnight in America because in America, your based upon and then what’s even more important than that is well, I might even almost begin to start to get ahead of myself. So let’s back up.

So we recognize that America is a good place. Now, I think we have mentioned that it is exceptional. So let’s talk about this economic part of it. There are only two ways to get money. Only two. There’s a car going down the street out here, there’s two ways that I can get money out of that person’s pocket. This is essential for all of us to understand because when the greater the variance in income fluctuation, the greater the freedom; the less freedom, the more steady.

So, in Cuba, in North Korea, you don’t have this divergence in income. As you begin to incorporate opportunity and freedom in degrees of Mexico or Vietnam, some people become wealthy. And how did they become wealthy? Big question. Car is going down the streets, there’s two ways I can get money out that person’s pocket. One is called free enterprise.

And that’s where I lay awake at nights, figuring out ways to do something good for a person such that they’ll slam on the brake, pull on the parking lot, say you’re going to clean my car and do the carpeting and wiping for the windows and wipe off the dash, I’d much rather have that than have this $10 Bill. I’d much rather have that pair of shoes than this $60. A global position, you know, my phone for $200, I would never get lost again. Wouldn’t it be wonderful? I’ll take a GPS unit.

Doing Good Voluntarily

So under free enterprise, the way that I get money is by doing good for the person such that they voluntarily, I got to stress this part, voluntarily, freely is the term, freely and voluntarily reach in their pocket and say I would rather have that than this. And they make an exchange, which at the end of the exchange they’re both better off. Now, so a person who can come up with a device and I can push the button and it will go and I will say yes, how much do you want for that?

So under free enterprise, we figure out ways to do something for people so that they voluntarily reach in their pocket and give you money and make an exchange, which at the end of the exchange, this is critical, there’s hardly an economics professor in America that understands this, that if you make the exchange, at the end of the exchange, they are both better off, and if not, they won’t make the exchange. So let’s hit it again.

You got a farmer with a pile of wheat, you got a baker with 10 empty ovens. The baker says, if I had his wheat, I could make donuts and sell them in the morning, farmer says I don’t need this wheat, if I had his money, I could get a new tractor, but we’re on the barn, and the two of them make an exchange, which at the end of the exchange, they are both better off, and they have created wealth. And that is the only way that wealth is created. They are both wealthier than they were before. So people just sit around and dream this stuff up.

I was walking out the door one day my son said to me, this is a while back, as you’ll see shortly, he walked out and he said you have the app on your phone that shows what gates you’re going out at the airport. I said, Robert, what are you talking about? He said, well, there’s an app, you just type in your flights, and when you land it will tell you which gate you’re coming and which gate you’re going out, and that way you’ll know whether it’s just across the hall or you have to get to another way. I said show it to me, so he showed $0.99. Question: is that worth $0.99 on my phone for next three years? Yeah.

Rick:

Alright, friends, quick interruption here we’re going to take a quick break. That was Bob McEwen you were listening to. We’ll be right back with him after this break, you’re listening to WallBuilders Live.

A Moment From AMERICAN HISTORY

This is David Barton with another moment from America’s history. Our Founding Fathers, despite their common love for America, did not always agree with each other in politics. Such was the case between John and Samuel Adams. John was the leader of the Federalist party and Samuel was a leader of the anti-Federalist party. Consequently, political disagreements were not unusual between these two.

On October the 4th, 1790, Sam wrote John and told him “Let ministers and philosophers, statesman and patriots unite their endeavors to renovate the age by educating their little boys and girls and leading them in the study and practice of the exalted virtues of the Christian system.” Two weeks later, John wrote back and told Samuel that on this issue, they both agreed. While these two prominent Founding Fathers disagreed on much, they both agreed on the importance of educating the next generation and the principles of Christianity.

Rick:

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live. Thanks for staying with us today. Congressman Bob McEwen is where we were right before the break. So let’s just dive right back in with Congressman McEwen over at the ProFamily Legislators Conference.

What We Can Learn from the Airport App

Bob:

Why did that person make that? Because they didn’t want me to get lost in the Atlanta airport? No. They don’t care about me. They wanted a million of us to download the app, and they would become a millionaire. Now, if you have somebody who doesn’t understand that, they’ll get a position in Congress, maybe they’ve escaped from Somalia or somewhere and they’ll come in, they’ll say well, nobody should have a million dollars, we should steal it from him. Just like they do in Mexico, just like they do in Nicaragua, just like they do in North Vietnam, let’s just steal it. And then they create poverty.

Now, so the person does it and nobody rewards them for doing it unless they are blessed to buy it. There’s no obligation to buy it. Nobody has to pass a law. Nobody has to give an edict, you have to wear a diaper on your nose while you’re listening to this, and if you’re not, we’re going to kick you off the airplane at 10,000 feet. They don’t do any of that stuff because in a free enterprise system, you have the freedom to willfully choose. And here’s the point.

The greater the contribution, the greater the reward. So we honor rich people in America because we know how they got rich. They got rich by figuring out ways to do good things for people. There’s a handful of people in this room that remember back in the days when you were to run a computer, you had to have a green eyeshade, you had to speak in mumbles, and you had to have a pocket protector. And you carried all these cards around with you. And I took a course in computers and that’s what we did. All you had to do was go over to a friend and take out one card and you would follow up his entire frame for the whole semester. And you would spill him, you’d see him along there. It was horrible.

And when I went to Congress, back in those days, people got these things that were called Computer letters. And people will just spit out the fact they got a computer letter. They just hated computer letters. And so Congress didn’t have any computers. My predecessor didn’t have any computers. Well, I wasn’t of that generation so I thought computer would be good.

Who Is Rewarded?

And so we wrote the first program in order to have, when a letter came in, we talked it in, I got the answer to the letter and so we could answer, we answered every letter the same day. We had 24 hour turnaround. If we didn’t have a full answer for it, we just acknowledged it. In writing that first program, it was all by DOS. And I had it taped to the desk. And you had to backslash double two Ds semi colon back. And if you made one mistake and after four or five times, you just gave up and left.

But a guy came along with an idea and he said, I’m going to make a little icon and I’ll put all that stuff in there. And you just click on this icon, it’ll do it perfectly every time. We’ll call it Windows.

And so when he did that, what was the principle? The greater the contribution, the greater the reward. So computers went from all these people with green eyeshades and pocket protectors to a little two-year-old, a literal two-year-old.

My little granddaughter, I’m sitting there watching the news, she comes and takes my iPad and sits down beside me, snuggle up against me so that she can touch, turns sideways, and downloads a cartoon of some sort that she wanted on my iPad, on a computer. She can barely talk, but she knows how to do that. Why?

And what happened to the person that did that? What’s the principle? The greater the contribution, change the world, became the richest man on the planet. Now, are you going to tell me that a 1.4 billion Canadians or Chinese, there was never one Thomas Edison there?

No, there were lots of Thomas Edison’s there. But freedom allowed them to prosper. The greater the freedom, the greater the wealth. Half of all the Nobel Prizes in the history of the world have gone to the 4% that we call Americans. Now here’s a little piece of work. Half of those were not born in America. Now, what happened? Did they suddenly get smart when they got to here? No, they got three.

Heroes of History

Rick:

Alright, folks, got to interrupt for a quick break, stay with us, you’re listening to WallBuilders Live.

Hi, friends, this is Tim Barton of WallBuilders. This is a time when most Americans don’t know much about American history or even heroes of the faith. And I know oftentimes we, parents, we’re trying to find good content for our kids to read.

And if you remember back to the Bible, to the book of Hebrews, it has the faith Hall of Fame where they outline the leaders of faith that had gone before them. Well, this is something that as Americans, we really want to go back and outline some of these heroes, not just of American history, but heroes of Christianity in our faith as well.

I want to let you know about some biographical sketches we have available on our website. One is called The Courageous Leaders collection. And this collection includes people like Abigail Adams, Abraham Lincoln, Francis Scott Key, George Washington Carver, Susanna Wesley, even the Wright brothers. And there’s a second collection called Heroes of History.

In this collection, you’ll read about people like Benjamin Franklin or Christopher Columbus, Daniel Boone, George Washington, Harriet Tubman; friends, the list goes on and on. This is a great collection for your young person to have and read and it’s a providential view of American and Christian history. This is available at www.wallbuilders.com. That’s www.wallbuilders.com.

Rick:

We’re back here on WallBuilders Live. We’re going to jump right back in with Congressman McEwen over at the ProFamily Legislators Conference.

Well…Why?

Bob:

Every time you have a colleague that stands up and says, we need to do this and do that, and then this is the classic, we’re the only country that doesn’t do this and we’re the only country that… And I keep standing up and say absolutely, Pat Schroeder. You know you got 199 countries that you can go to. We don’t have any place else to go. If this is so all fired, great, then you go across the border in the place and do it. We’re the only country that doesn’t do those things.

Dan Hannon is a member of the European Parliament from Britain and leader of the Brexit movie was pointed out. He said, these Europeans would come up with these ideas in this regulation in this control, you’ve got the same thing and your colleagues, we need to do this. Why?

But they say, well, there’s no law. And Dan was saying, so well, then we need to make some regulations. Why? Well, because there’s no law. Well, so!

They believe the purpose of government is to tell people what to do. The British and American idea was leave us alone. And for Britain wanting to get out, we don’t have to do that, everybody’s doing fine. We don’t need a bunch of politician telling us what size grapes.

If the brown spot is more than a quarter of an inch, therefore you have to cut in half… Just go away. Let people decide that. And here’s the point is the greater the freedom, the greater the wealth

Now, these folks, they don’t understand how this works. They’ll screw up a two-car funeral, I mean literally. We had a governor from Ohio, he was from my district, and we’re not sure he finished high school. But he used to say you guys are stupid, he’s screw up a two-car funeral. What did he mean?

Because there’s only two cards. You got the hearse and you got the family card. Now, so you’re in Afghanistan, you either take out the army first and then you take out the people or you take out the people first, then you take out the army. I mean, this isn’t complicated.

Two Ways to Get Money

The combined collective brainpower of the entire Democratic Party ought to be able to figure this out. But the answer is that they’re not able to, and as a consequence, we are left…

Now I said that there were two ways to get money out of that car, two. One is called free enterprise, where I invent these things. Now, remember, let’s take the person that made the app so that I don’t get lost in Atlanta.

Why did they do it? So they could make money. Who made it? Do I care if it was made by a six-foot eight African American male or a four foot seven, Asian female? Under free enterprise, you’re not rewarded because of who you are, you’re rewarded because of what you do for others. And who decides that? The consumer decides that. They reward you for doing something good for…

So as a consumer, all I care is does it work? So a quality, equal opportunity comes under free enterprise. The further you get away from that, then they want to know what are your sexual preferences? What color is your skin color? Etc, all this evil, evil that comes with socialism. So I said, there are two ways to get money out of the car. One is free enterprise: people figuring out ways to do good things for the people. I mean, just stop and think about it.

If a plane is landing at this moment all across the continent of Africa, under socialism, all of their air traffic control system along since atrophied, they’re able to function. Why? Because of a global positioning system conceived, invented, and maintained by Americans.

There’s a ship parking in Hong Kong, in Singapore at this very moment using a global positioning system conceived, invented, maintained by Americans. There are but our trucks delivering goods all over the planet because of what America has done to make it possible for them.

As America Goes, So Goes….

There’s a Mercedes dealer in Buenos Aires ordering apart from Stuttgart, Germany, using an internet conceived, invented, and maintained by Americans. Nobody has blessed the world like this. But the main thing that it does is, as I said, it stands for righteousness and it keeps people from doing nasty things. And only America can do that.

I did the prayer breakfast and Liz and I were in Kiev about five weeks ago or so. As is often the case, the prime ministers and Cabinet members in diplomatic corps from the neighboring countries come up, and they just hang on you about what is going on in America. What are you doing in America?

Because they know they’re at the mercy of us. That is if we get a brain-dead president that doesn’t like our country, they’re in trouble. And so there’s nothing they can do, but hope and pray that we’ll be able to see it.

And so in the economic system, as to how we do this if another country becomes the most powerful nation on Earth as like under the Bush and Obama years, the Chinese began creating artificial islands in the South China Sea. And then they said, oh, we’re just doing this for entertainment.

You know, we’re going to put malls there or something and everybody knew what they were doing. So then when Obama came, then they started putting runways and they begin to militarize them. Donald Trump came in said, stop it, no more, done. That’s international waters, quit it. And they quit it.

Because in the South China Sea, 70% of all maritime traffic passes through there, and under American leadership, by the way, just remember, we’re all about the same age, none of us remember when America wasn’t the leading nation on Earth. It wasn’t until April 7th, 1947.

PATRIOT ACADEMY

Rick:

Alright, friends, one more break today. Stay with us, we’ll be right back with Bob McEwen on WallBuilders Live.

Have you noticed the vacuum of leadership in America? It’s not just that we have a few bad leaders taking us away from our founding principles and down a road of destruction. The real challenge is that we’re looking around for leaders of principle to step up and too often no one is there. This is a generational challenge. And we must have a generational solution.

God is raising up a generation of young leaders with a passion for impacting the world around them. They’re crying out for the mentorship and leadership training they need. And we need to equip them for the purpose God has laid on their hearts. Patriot Academy was created to meet that need. You the listeners of WallBuilders Live have supported Patriot Academy over the years. You’ve sent your children and grandchildren to the program and the results have been remarkable.

Rick:

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live.  We’re going to dive right back in with Congressman Bob McEwen speaking out of the ProFamily Legislators Conference. Here’s Congressman McEwen

ProFamily Legislators Conference

Bob:

In 1947, for the first time prior in the interwar period, the reason that Hitler was able to do all he did all and that, at Pearl Harbor, America had the 17th largest army in the world. Romania’s army was bigger than the United States. We were not a world player. Britain had ruled the world for 250 years. And it was their responsibility to lead.

After America came in World War I, after they had a million casualties were done in World War 1 and couldn’t quit, finally, Woodrow Wilson was reelected on the principle, he kept us out of war. And so he was sworn in on March 3rd, on April 1st, he sent a war message to the Congress, and we went to war. But it takes a while to get that done.

First time we went to war was on May 29th of 1918, June, July, August, September, October, November 11th, so there it is five and a half months, and they saw Americans are going to put a stop to this. And so the Germans said, okay, we got the idea, Americans. So we grabbed our folks and came back home and left them in charge to do what they wanted to do.

And all during the interwar period, they continued to do Nazism and fascism and communism. In 1970, they took over the Russians, but America was roaring 20s, we’re minding our own business, until finally, the whole world blows up again, and then we had to go back and settle it. And this time, having done so, at the end of World War II having defeated Imperial Japan, who also conquered the Philippines on December 7th, 1941, killed the millions in Chinese, raped and murdered 100,000 women and just Nanking alone, so that’s probably left out of the history books, and the 1619 people are wanting going on to blame it on some Virginia soldier, I guess.

But nevertheless, in the process of writing, all of that, a telegram was sent from Prime Minister to Harry Truman and said that the United States did not intervene in the Cyprus crisis, that it would be lost because the crown had neither the capacity nor the will to lead.
