Faith and the Culture

Welcome to the intersection of faith and the culture. Thanks for joining us here at WallBuilders Live, where we are taking on the hot topics of the day, from a biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective. You’ve joined us on day three, well, day three of the year as far as radio days, I know it’s not the third day of the year. I did look at the calendar once in a while, but it is the third radio day of the year, so it’s our third chance to share with you here on WallBuilders Live.

And all three of the first three days of our radio year were spending with former Congressman Bob McEwen. And there’s a reason for that. We want 2022 to be a year where we restore biblical values and constitutional principles. And Congressman McEwen is absolutely phenomenally gifted at sharing those things and teaching those things.

And if you’ve been listening the first few days, you already know that. But here’s day three, we’re going to jump right back in, head back over to the ProFamily Legislators Conference, pick up where we left off yesterday, and learn more from Congressman McEwen. Here’s Bob McEwen at the ProFamily Legislators Conference.

Millions Killed

First time we went to war was on May 29th of 1918, June, July, August, September, October, November 11th, so there it is five of five and a half months, and they saw Americans are going to put a stop to this. And so the Germans said, okay, we got the idea, Americans, so we grabbed our folks and came back home and left them in charge to do what they wanted to do. And all during the interwar period, they continued through Nazism and fascism, and communism.

In 1970, they took over the Russians, but America was in 20s we’re minding our own business until finally, the whole world rose up again, and then we had to go back and settle it. And this time, having done so at the end of World War II, having defeated imperial Japan, who also conquered the Philippines on December 7th, 1941, killed the millions in Chinese, raped and murdered 100,000 women in just Nanjing alone. So that’s probably left out in history books. And the 1619 people are going on to blame it on some Virginia soldier, I guess.

But nevertheless, in the process of writing all of that, a telegram was sent from Prime Minister to Harry Truman and said that if United States did not intervene in the Cyprus crisis that it would be lost because the crown had neither the capacity nor the will to lead. And with that, the torch was passed to a country that didn’t ask for it, didn’t seek it. And from that day until this, the sense of stability and peace in the world has been resting upon the United States of America. So we’ve all grown up. We say well, this makes sense. This is nice. This is really wonderful.

Well, listen, if we collapse it, we allow somebody like China to be in control, and they can very easily say to Japan who imports 100% of their oil, if you don’t break diplomatic relations with Israel, you won’t get any oil. Who’s going to stop them? See, people don’t know what it’s like to have tyranny ruling the world because Americans have done it for all these many generations. And that’s why it’s so essential to us. So we have the political and we have economic.

How to Destroy an Economy

So I said there are two ways to get money out of that person’s pocket that’s going down in the car. One of them is free enterprise. The other one is coercion. That is where I just go and I take it. So a car is going down the street, I come up, put a gun in the wind and say I want half of everything in your purse. And she gives me half the money in her purse. Now, question.

Have I created any wealth? No. Have I redistributed wealth? Yeah, yeah, from her purse to me. But to the degree to which a person is augmented is degree to which the other person is diminished.

So, in the process of there is no wealth creation, but it’s worse than that. It punishes the person who created the wealth, they don’t get to keep it and it rewards the person who didn’t earn it. So the degree to which you do this is the degree to which you destroy an economy. So a little bit of it destroys a little bit, you do it more and more and more. And so we listened to the Democrats, they always talk about the way wealth is distributed.

That good brilliant mayor of New York, unfortunately, he’s leaving having destroyed the city. Remember he said, there’s plenty of money in America, is just the way that it’s just distributed. Bernie Sanders always talking about redistributing wealth, redistributing, they don’t have a clue how wealth is created. All they know is to redistribute it. Now when they redistribute it, that discourages the production.

Now I’ve mentioned that if every time you went through an intersection, somebody came out and took half of your money, how long before you quit going through the intersection? Well, wouldn’t take long, would it And so when I was young, the richest city in the history of mankind was a place called Detroit. Michigan, Detroit, Michigan.

100% of the Time

They elected a racist mayor who said we can put a stop to this. And so he began to tax and regulate people to the point that business began and people began to leave, the population of Detroit is now lower than it was in 1900. And now it is the poorest city north of the Rio Grande. So if you understand this principle, you can make any rich place poor or any poor place rich. The same time that Detroit was the richest city in the world, third from the bottom was a place called South Korea, they’ve just finished the Korean War.

But what do Americans do? Do Americans take advantage of people? No. We help rebuild them.

Until now, South Korea is the 10th largest GDP in the world. North Korea, same heritage, same culture, same climate, abject poverty. Over the decade of the last decade, 10% of the population of North Korea starved to death.

That’s what you do with food, clothing, shelter. The first thing you do is food, they even do that. Eats [inaudible 06:00], and leaves and things that fill up their stomachs. South Korea got freedom and they’re wealthy. So it only works this way every time.

So let me explain. As a political leader, let us say that this represents 100% of any income of any city or any state, or any nation. Let’s say it represents a $100 bill, and that you go to the Walmart, the most expensive thing in the store is $99, that means you’re completely free to choose anything in the store.

Hey, quick break, everybody, we’ll be right back. You’re listening to Bob McEwen speaking at the ProFamily Legislators Conference, and you’re listening to it right here on WallBuilders Live.

This is Tim Barton from WallBuilders with another moment from American History. In 1963, the United States Supreme Court decided that voluntary Bible reading could no longer be part of the school day. Founding Father, Benjamin Rush, known as the “Father of Public Schools” under the Constitution, pointedly warned that the Bible should be read in schools and preference to all other books.

He specifically warned that if America ever cease promoting biblical principles in schools, then we would waste so much time and money and punishing crimes and take so little pains to prevent them. He was right. We now have 7 million Americans in prison on probation or on parole, and the United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world.

Sadly, this was unnecessary but is the result of no longer teaching the morals of the Bible in schools. For more information about the Founding Fathers’ views on the positive impact of the Bible in schools, go to

We’re back on WallBuilders Live. Thanks for staying with us today. We’re listening to Bob McEwen give a presentation at the ProFamily Legislators Conference. Can’t think of a better way to kick off the year, knowing our principles and knowing what produces freedom is going to be so important in 2022 as we return to those principles. So let’s return to ProFamily Legislators Conference. Here’s Bob McEwen.

Less Freedom = Lower Standard

Now let’s suppose that someone comes along and takes 25% of it away from you, the tax regulations, whatever, 25%, now you’re left with 75, what happens? Two things happen. Number one is you have fewer choices. That is you go into the store, there’s some things you cannot choose. Thomas Jefferson said freedom is having choices: the more choices I take away from you, the less freedom you have. Anybody who’s ever raised a teenager has had this debate a lot.

And that is also if I take money away from you, you have a lower standard of living. Now, if you’re liberal, or New York Times, this would be a profundity to make this observation. But you and I know that if I take money away from you, you’re worse off.

And suppose someone comes along and takes half of it, even fewer choices, less freedom, lower standard, suppose someone comes along and takes 75, leaves you with 25, fewer choices, less freedom… suppose someone comes along and takes it all, what do we call a person who works all day and keeps absolutely nothing? That person is called a slave.

Now there are two people that can come and take money away from you. One is called a criminal, has a gun and can take money away from you. There’s this called the government, has a gun and can come and take money away from you. And here’s the point of the whole presentation. The impact is the same.

You go to the pay window, you walk across the parking lot, a fella comes up with a gun in your ribs and want 50% of everything you have, you go home, you sit at home, your wife and children this is how much money we have for food, clothing and shelter, the kind of vacation we make on a car we can drive, or you make it all the way to your truck and you open up you say half of it’s already gone, uncle Sam’s already been here. The impact is the same.

If You Understand This, You Can Make…

And that’s why when you and I sit in legislative bodies, and everybody says let’s do this and let’s do that we say no. Well, don’t you want to help people? I can’t help people because you don’t have a single thing which you didn’t first take from someone else. Government doesn’t have its own money.

It comes and puts a gun in the window and takes from people and diminishes people and we say quit. Because the principle is that the greater the freedom, the greater the wealth; the greater the government, the greater the poverty. And so you show me what percentage of the GDP of any city or any state or a nation here’s the principle that applies.

When I was in the state legislature in Ohio, Ohio was number one in new job creation, number one. We elected a couple of governors so we can stop this. And when John Kasich left, Ohio was 49th out of the 50 states in new job creation. Let me say that again. Ohio went for 49th, for the first time in history, Ohio, Buckeye said, thank God for Michigan, but nevertheless, we were 49th in new job creation. So politics is just a simple question.

When Margaret Thatcher took over, the International Monetary Fund had taken over control of the pound sterling, Britain was in utter chaos. What’s she do? The first thing she did was cut taxes, put money back in people’s pockets. By the time she left office 11 years later, Britain had the fourth largest gross domestic product in the world.

If you understand this, you can make any rich place poor, any poor place, rich. Democrats are in the business of making rich places poor. And you and I are committed to making poor people in poor places rich.

Now, you say oh, Bob, that sounds a little prejudice to me. Well, here’s how it works. And I repeat, half of the people in this room have seen that before, but here’s how it simply works. And this is why socialism can never function. Never. Never has. Never will. And here’s why.

You Care About Two Things

Let us suppose that you’re going to buy something for yourself. You care about two things. You care about the price, because you’re paying for it, and you care about the quality because you’re going to consume it. And nobody can make that decision as well as you can buying something for yourself with your own money. You might pay $4 for a cup of coffee at seven in the morning for which you can pay $0.35 cents at 2:30 in the afternoon. When it’s your money, you make the best choice.

Now let us suppose that you don’t control one of these two things. Let’s suppose you’re going to buy something for someone else. You care about the price? Yeah, because you’re paying for it. But you’re a little more flexible on the quality… By the time it breaks, they’ll be married for three years.

They’ll forget it, give it to him anyway, this will be fine. And we’ve all bought things for people we never would have bought for ourselves. We’ve all received gifts we never had. Do we care about the price? Yeah, because we’re paying for it. Do we care about the quality? No, because we’re not going to consume it. Let’s put it the other way around.

Let’s suppose we’re going to consume it but we’re not going to pay for it. Do we care about the quality? Yeah, sure enough. So the waitress comes along and says, would you like to have some orange juice? He said, well, how much is it? She says it’s $3.5 a glass. No, I’m fine, I don’t need the orange juice.

Oh, you got the pancakes? Well, it comes with the pancakes. Oh, well, in that case, I’ll take three glasses, poor away. You might leave half a glass you wouldn’t if you’re paying for it. You care about the quality? Yeah, because you’re consuming it. Do you care about the price? No, because you’re not paying for it.

Final example, let us suppose that you’re going out to lunch and said we’re going to have a party this afternoon, here’s $200, buy some raffle gifts, and come back. And so you go to the dollar store and you go, you throw it over there and they bring it up say how much is it? $157 Alright, I can get some more garbage. Let me go. And so we go back and how much is that? 184. Okay, I get a little more.

We Believe What Lincoln Said

Finally, you end up spending all the money. Now, what is that called? That’s called a third-party purchase? Do you care about the price? No, because it’s not your money? Do you care about the quality? No, because you’re not going to consume it. Now, here’s the point.

Mr. Economist who works at a college and has never held a productive job or produce any wealth, but you got to live off the other folks and therefore they have things that they see that work in truth, but I don’t believe it will work in principle, because you’re backward, son.

Here’s the point. All government purchases are third party purchases, made with money is not yours to purchase things they will not personally consume.

Therefore will it be wasted in the highway department? You bet you. Will be wasted in the Defense Department? You can count on it. That’s why we believe as Abraham Lincoln said that government should do only those things which a man cannot do better for himself.

Alright, friends, quick interruption here we’re going to take a quick break. That was Bob McEwen you were listening to. We’ll be right back with him after this break. You’re listening to WallBuilders Live.

Biographical Sketches

Hi, friends, this is Tim Barton of WallBuilders. This is a time when most Americans don’t know much about American history or even heroes of the faith. And I know oftentimes we, parents, we’re trying to find good content for our kids to read.

And if you remember back to the Bible, to the book of Hebrews, it has the faith Hall of Fame where they outline the leaders of faith that had gone before them. Well, this is something that as Americans, we really want to go back and outline some of these heroes, not just of American history, but heroes of Christianity in our faith as well.

I want to let you know about some biographical sketches we have available on our website. One is called The Courageous Leaders collection. And this collection includes people like Abigail Adams, Abraham Lincoln, Francis Scott Key, George Washington Carver, Susanna Wesley, even the Wright brothers. And there’s a second collection called Heroes of History.

In this collection, you’ll read about people like Benjamin Franklin or Christopher Columbus, Daniel Boone, George Washington, Harriet Tubman; friends, the list goes on and on. This is a great collection for your young person to have and read and it’s a providential view of American and Christian history. This is available at That’s

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live. Thanks for staying with us today. Congressman Bob McEwen is where we were right before the break. So let’s just dive right back in with Congressman McEwen over at the ProFamily Legislators Conference.

What Government Should Do

Can a man build an overpass by himself? No. Can a man defend the country? No. Okay, there’s certain things that he cannot do for himself. So we’re going to limit to that. Because every time we take $1 from an individual to save and invest in use for their own benefit and run it through a third-party system called government, we’re in the process of making the nation poorer.

And you show me what percentage of the GDP of any city or state or a nation the principle applies. The greater the freedom, the greater the wealth; the greater the government, the greater the poverty.

And you and I are in positions of responsibility to prevent socialist, government control, thieves, people that want to have money, not because of what they did for other people, but because the relationships that they have with government that they then can benefit. And those countries are all over the world. People, they don’t understand it.

You take Pope Francis is from Argentina, he grew up in Latin America in those corrupt countries. He’s never been to America his entire life, never his entire life. All he knows is the rich people are the same people that we saw in Indonesia and elsewhere. So he sees rich people in Mexico and he sees rich people in Argentina. And he says, well, the rich should care for the poor. How did the rich get there? You only get two ways.

Did they get there by blessing other people? No. They got there by coercion. Under socialism, they had a special privilege and therefore he thinks it’s noble for them to take from them and give to other folks. We believe that under a godly system that people then bless the others. That’s why everybody when a hurricane or a tsunami heats the largest Muslim nation on earth, to whom do they turn for aid? They turn to the Christians of the United States of America because that’s the way it works.

One More Thing…

There is one more thing I want to say here that it’s important that we’re not become weary in well-doing. The apostle Paul, you know, God says, I want you to go to this town. So he goes there and gets beat to a pulp and leaves him for dead.

Now, you could ask, Lord, are you sure your map is really good because this place, this can’t be your program? And he said, no, no, we don’t become weary in well-doing. That is in this world, you will have tribulation [inaudible 18:03], but be of good cheer for I’ve overcome the world.

So this fight that’s going on, let’s don’t get discouraged. This country, if you go to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, they’re the ones that keep all of the charts. This federal, in the United States of America, they have the median income for 1996, Bill Clinton 96, 2006, 2016, that’s 20 years. Absolutely perfectly flat: never happened in the history of the country. Not going anyplace doing anything.

Donald Trump comes in and says this is really silly. We’re taking all of our money, we used to put it in the bank, and people wanted to buy a house or a car, now you’re taking all, send it to New York, they bundle it up and build things in China. I’m fed up with this nonsense. I think the money ought to stay here. And of the 16 Republican candidates on the platform, he was the only one that said it.

And so when he comes into office, he went around the world, he said to Mercedes, this Chinese aren’t stupid. They figured this thing out. And supply chain, you can’t build a Mercedes without their approval. What’s the matter with you? And they went, good point. And so they started taking their factories out of China and moving them into Vietnam and elsewhere, the whole world was like he woke them out of a stupor.

People start bringing things back home and the American median incomes, they begin to create wealth. You remember his predecessor? What are you going to do? Wave a magic wand?

Emergency Legislation For…

Well, yeah, he did. He waved a magic wand called freedom. And that is that we’re going to lower the taxes on and regulations on production, and we’re going to do this. And I’ve said this for 30 years.

America could be energy independent whenever we got a leader that wanted to be. And in 18 months, in 18 months, instead of sending money abroad, they’re buying stuff here. I was in the state legislature under Jimmy Carter. I remember when he went on television with his little jacket and talked about how that we’re all running out of natural gas next Tuesday a week.

And he had to pass the emergency legislation. I’m telling the honest truth, emergency legislation. We had 3,700 acres under glass in Ohio, where they had hothouses for flowers and vegetables and things. But we couldn’t wait to transfer to oil or do anything else because we’re run out of natural gas tomorrow.

And so we had an emergency legislation and 11 of us voted against to cut off natural gas to anything other than residences, not those horrible corporations, and not for decorative lighting. And they had to shut it all off because we’re running out of natural gas. That was 1978, 88, 98, 2008, 2018. You know how much natural gas we have now? Well, they do it in four categories. 25 years or less, 50 years or less, 100 or less, 100 plus. After a century, you can’t judge anymore. We have 100 plus years of natural gas.

Have you noticed the vacuum of leadership in America? It’s not just that we have a few bad leaders taking us away from our founding principles and down a road of destruction. The real challenge is that we’re looking around for leaders of principle to step up and too often no one is there. This is a generational challenge. And we must have a generational solution.

God is raising up a generation of young leaders with a passion for impacting the world around them. They’re crying out for the mentorship and leadership training they need. And we need to equip them for the purpose God has laid on their hearts. Patriot Academy was created to meet that need. You the listeners of WallBuilders Live have supported Patriot Academy over the years. You’ve sent your children and grandchildren to the program and the results have been remarkable.

Patriot Academy graduates now serve in state capitals around America in the halls of Congress, in business, in the film industry, in the pulpit, and every area of the culture. They’re leading effectively and impacting the world around them. Patriot Academy is now expanding across the nation and now’s your chance to experience this life-changing week that trains champions to change the world.

Visit for dates and locations. Our core program is still for young leaders 16 to 25 years old, but we also now have a citizen track for adults, so visit the website today to learn more. Help us fill the void of leadership in America join us in training champions to change the world at

We’re back here on WallBuilders Live. Thanks for staying with us. We’re going to jump right back in and get the conclusion of Congressman Bob McEwen speaking at the ProFamily Legislators Conference.

Righteousness and Economics

We have more natural gas than any place on the planet. I repeat, these folks will screw up a two-car funeral. So all we need is the proper leadership. So Donald Trump comes in and he makes us energy independent within matter of 18 months, and the country takes off. And you know what happens to the stock market?

The stock market in China goes down 47%. He wipes out half of all the wealth in the entire nation. Now, do all those little smarty pants in their cheese and parties with their green pants in their shoeless penny loafers in Long Island. Are they happy about that? No, because they’ve been putting their money.

When they did that, the stock market in America went up 55%, increased 55%, and increased to half, in China went down half. Now they were about to overtake us. And remember that flatline of median income, jumped $5,300 in four years. That’s why I say here’s what we’re going to the country was in trouble. What are the two parts?

Righteousness and economics. We remember what John Adams said, was made for a moral and religious people, wholly inadequate to any other. That’s the integrity part.

The second part is this. George Washington, the dollars you remember said something’s not worth a Continental is totally worthless. The money was of no value. When they came together under a new government to try to establish it to gold, and this country that was in chaos, he had to write a State of the Union address. In his third State of the Union address, he’s been president for three years, he says this. He says “The United States enjoy a scene of tranquility and prosperity under our new government that could hardly have been hoped for.” Now get this, get this.

Our public credit, that’s the value of the American dollar stands at a high ground which three years ago it would have been considered a species of madness to have foretold. In other words, if I would have told you three years ago America will have the strongest currency in the world, you would have said I was crazy. What does that mean? That means if you do the wrong thing, you can foul up a great and wonderful country. But it also means if you do the right thing, you can restore it very rapidly. God bless.
