My name is Rick Green, I’m America’s Constitution coach and I’m here with David Martin, he’s America’s premier historian and Tim Barton is with us, national speaker and pastor and president of WallBuilders. We sure appreciate you joining us today.

We’re going to have Bob McEwan with us today. He’s actually, I mean one of the foremost expert on economics and public policy in the country. Does an incredible job of educating Americans on these very important issues. He’s served in Congress at a critical time. We’re thrilled to call him our friend. He’s one of the most popular speakers we ever have in our ProFamily Legislators Conference and that’s what we’re going to share with you today”€¦ McEwen was out speaking to state legislators from across the country at our legislators”€™ conference. And we thought it was so good we want to share it with you our listeners here on WallBuilders Live, so stay tuned, we’re going to dive right in to Bob McEwen. Welcome Bob McEwen

Bob:

It’s a joy not only to be with Tim and with David and everybody, but to be with all of you. So let’s get started. Let me begin by saying that I appreciate what you do. Everybody expects that when you’re in a position of leadership that it’s all roses and easy and everybody caters to you.

And I know that you know that that’s not even close to being the truth. That you work harder than anybody else and everybody owns you and they as I often when I speak to pastors, I explain to them the two jobs are very, very similar, being a pastor and being a politician. That is that you’re always on, everybody owns you, you go from the airport to home at one o’clock in the morning, stop by the grocery store, hit somebody now, boom, they own you. And then people wouldn’t walk up to their insurance agent and say, I don’t like that car you’re driving, but they’ll don’t hesitate to tell a preacher or a politician what they think they ought to be doing and then since they own you, then they expect you, congressman, this is the only time that my grandson is getting his Eagle Scout award and it’s on a Sunday afternoon, it’s only five hours one way. If you leave in the morning, you’re going to be home before midnight. And then they say to the pastor, you know, pastor, this is the only time my mother is in the hospital and it’s only two states away and it’s on a Tuesday, you don’t do anything on Tuesday anyway.

Expectations Can Cause Disappointment

And so as a result that I understand what you do but, there can be burn out or wear out. And that’s why I want to say how much I appreciate the sacrifice and contribution that you make to our country.

My father encouraged us one time to understand that all disappointments come from expectations. Whenever you feel disappointed, you thought you’re going to make the light, that’s why you’re upset. If you have 4 people come over for dinner, if you invited 12, but only 4 came, then you’re disappointed. But you invite 4 and 4 comes, all disappointments come from our expectations. And if in life our expectations are that if we do God’s will, he’s going to bless us and life is going to be pretty smooth, it doesn’t work that way.

And let me just give you a couple of examples. I mean you think of the Apostle Paul, the Apostle Paul, he said, I have fought the good fight, I have finished”€¦ son, you haven’t finished, in the places all wreck. I mean every place he went, he got beat up, beat to a pulp three times, left for dead.

Now, if you think that God has called you to do something, you say, yeah, Lord, this ought to be a little easier than this, you know, you wanted me to come to town, I ought to be able to get a good deal at the auditorium and the PA system ought to work and you got to bless this and yet every place he went, he got trounced. So therefore if his expectation was it was going to be simple, it didn’t happen. And then the interesting part was he said that it is finished.

Finish Your Course

And you think, you didn’t even get started. Those Corinthians are having orgies in church service. So what do you mean that you’re finished? He had done what God had called him to do. And that’s when we are complete. That’s when we’re finished. If we think that God is going to do something else, our disappointment will come our expectation. That might not be God’s plan.

He said to John, now John got fired up when he heard that Jesus was going to be born. I mean, he left in”€¦ and he went out there and he said, prepare ye the way of the Lord. I mean and he had these big crowds and he had these disciples and as you know, the anticipation had been that there would be a perfect lamb back in, let’s talk about Moses for a second. That is that Moses was raised in the house of Pharaoh and he could run the whole country. So God says, I want you to free these people over a piece of cake. No problem, I can run the entire nation. These folks will be easy.

So he goes down there and he finds a Egyptian bickering, he beats him up, kills him, buries him in the sand, comes back to the next day. And people say, what are you going to do, kill us too? And God says, wait, wait, wait, wait a minute here son, come with me. And people forget that Moses went out in the desert for 40 years.

All God Needs Is an Instrument

Now, we know he wandered for 40 years but he was by himself for 40 years as God was teaching him some things until finally, the bush says, you know, take off your shoes, I got great things in store. And Moses said, no, no, not me you know, I stuttered, my brother over here, you need him and God said, perfect, that’s what I’m looking for.

See I’m going to do this, all I need is an instrument. And the second that the instrument thinks that he’s driving, we’re going to go in the ditch. So as long as you’ll let me do it, then I will use you for what my purpose is which wouldn’t have made sense to say if you called me to free the people, I’m supposed to wander around out here for 40 years. We cannot have our expectations to go in God’s plan, so then he’s coming through.

And as you know, at the Passover, God said, take a newborn male perfect lamb, take the blood put it on the doorpost on the lintel and I see the blood, I will pass over. And they all in anticipation of the day when the Apostle or when John the Baptist would be able to say as all of his disciples are there and he’s baptizing in the River Jordan, he says, behold the lamb God who takes away the sins of the world.

A Moment From American History

This is Tim Barden from WallBuilders with another moment from American history. In the early 1700s, the Reverend John Wise preached that all men were created equal, that taxation without representation was tyranny and that God’s preferred form of government was the consent of the government. All of which is language recognizable in the Declaration of Independence. Why? Because in 1772, the Sons of Liberty led by founders such as Sam Adams and John Hancock reprinted and distributed the Reverend Wise”€™s sermons. So 4 years later, much of the Declaration reflected the language of those sermons by John Wise.

In 1926, on 150 anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, President Calvin Coolidge affirmed, “€œThe thoughts and the declaration can vary largely be traced back to what John Wise was saying. Few today know that the Declaration was so strongly influenced by the Reverend John Wise.

Be Faithful To Do Your Part

Bob:

And so Christ comes down, he baptized and God said, this is my beloved son, whom I’m well pleased and everybody then goes off with Jesus. And John the Baptist is standing there and water up to his knees all by himself and everybody is gone. Katie [inaudible 07:59] comes up and says, how do you feel about this? And he looks around and he says, I must decrease that he might increase.

Now you think that would be fine, I mean I’ve done my part, I’ve been faithful. I did what, no, no, no, no, there’s more in store. He gets to go to jail and he’s sitting in a prison which is not air-conditioned or anything. And he’s sitting there rotting and nothing is happening. And so finally, he sends a friend, he said, you know, well, you go ask Jesus out there. He said, is he the one or do we look for another? I mean, after all, I’m sitting here and he’s done nothing. And Jesus said he’s got a great report. He said, you go tell John that people eyes are being, the blind are being able to see and the lame are able to walk and we’re just having a great time. So they go back and tell John that and”€¦that wasn’t my point.

The fact is God has a plan for us and that was God’s plan for John. And happiness comes when we do what God calls us to do. And disappointment comes when we fail, when our definition of what God was to do is different from what he wants to do. That’s why situations like this are beneficial when we can encourage one another. Let’s take Christ, okay.

It Is Finished

You’ve done your ministry, you’ve helped everybody, you’ve gone around doing good and your thanks is that they beat you up and they’re trying to kill you. And so here you are up on the cross is, you know, I’ve a whole life of ministry, there should be some good folk here someplace, you know, I mean at least ought to be 12, right? No, no, there’s not 12. No, is it. Well, John, thanks for showing up. Can you take care of my mother here? And that’s about it. And then what did he say, it is finished? Say, what do you mean finished? Looks to me like you barely got started here. No. He had done what God had called him to do.

And our purpose on this earth even though we would love to do some different things as my father would say, I just want to be gone for a day. And that we could rearrange some things and the Supreme Court folks could go to the reward and it was just all kinds of good things that could happen. But nevertheless, our goal and your goal is that when things go wrong and you think, now, when Paul entered the city, he would have loved for those editorials to be favorable, but they weren’t. And so let us don’t get distressed in expecting something else to happen. Number one.

Blessed to be a Blessing

Number two, this country has you know has been abundantly blessed. It began with a righteous beginning, it has blessed the nation as no nation has been blessed. It has blessed the world as no nation has blessed the world. Let me give just a couple of minutes or reminder about that. There are skyscrapers all over the world. Why? Because an American named Elisha Otis invented the elevator. And there are places where it’s 100 and 120 degrees. Why? Because an American named Willis Carrier invented the air conditioner. God love him. And the list goes on and on. The light bulb and the Telegraph and the telephone, the global put men on the moon. Try to think of a nation on earth that if it could put men on the moon that as they would go to the moon, as the entire world was listening on the international hookup, they would read that in the beginning, it was God that created the heavens and the earth. And then as they land on the moon would take communion and recognition of Christ shedding his blood for all mankind. Think of any other nation that would do such a thing. There’s none. In America, is not under attack because it”€™s evil, America is under attack because it is good. It is the standard for righteousness in the world.

When a ship is attacked on the high seas, has happened over 300 times last year, to whom can they appeal? But 327,000 Americans that wear the uniform of the United States Navy. When a tsunami hits the largest Muslim nation on earth, Indonesia, the place that our former president grew up. To whom do they appeal for aid? They appeal to the Christians in America. And who comes to their aid? Do they ask all those people in their gold-plated 747s and ivory towers over in the Middle East? No, no, they come to America.

American Inventions

A little girl in Warsaw, a little 10 year old loses her puppy, has a collar with a little chip on it. She can go to her iPhone and through the internet and the Global Positioning System find exactly where her puppy dog is. All of it conceived, invented and maintained by Americans. There are ships that are docking at this very moment in Singapore and Hong Kong using the GPS conceived, invented, maintained by Americans.

The Socialists in Africa have totally destroyed the air traffic control system. It weren’t for the GPS or a beam, no air traffic in there, America blesses the world as no place ever has. And so now it’s we have to, as that has been lovingly transferred to us, we then have to make sure that we elect the proper kind of leadership.

We recently had some folks that did not appreciate what America is. Let me deviate just for a second on that. If you don’t grow up in America, if you never played Little League, you went to Vacation Bible School, you never wear a boy scout, you don’t know the America that we know. And so they come, Kamala Harris, we appreciate her mother came from India, her father came from Jamaica, she went to school in California so she can explain to us how evil our country is and she needs to be President.

Free Enterprise Works

For those of us that have been here, we understand how it works. And that is that under free enterprise, the way a person succeeds is by doing good things for other people, such that people voluntarily reach in their pocket and make an exchange, in which at the end of the exchange, they are better off and if not, they wouldn”€™t make the exchange. And they make the exchange which both people have created wealth. That’s called Free Enterprise. And the freedom that allows that to happen allows the nation to prosper.

Socialism is government control of those tools of production. So government decides who has a trucking company. Government controls who has a pipeline. Government controls who has a grocery store. Government controls who can be in the beauty parlor business.

And let’s just take Mexico for example. Let me put it in this context. We were leaving the embassy in Indonesia and the Ambassador shouted at us, he said, watch for people who are standing along the side of the roads for seemingly no reason, they will throw bricks at American cars when they go by. Question would be why? Well, the reason is that in order to have an American car, you have to be rich and in order to be rich in a socialist country, you have to have a relationship with the government. That’s government control of the tools.

So if you’re in Mexico, you and I can go to Mexico and we can’t go in the grocery business. You and I can’t go in the trucking business. If we want to go in the telephone business, there’s one man, Carlos Slim who controls all of the cell phones in the entire nation of Mexico. He charges 1/3 more than the world average. That’s why he has the money they can bail out to New York Times. That’s why he can own Univision to hire people to attack America.

The Sadness of Socialism

He also controls the concession that when repatriations, when money comes from America back to Mexico, the largest source of income for the nation, it used to be oil it was second, now it’s number one, he gets a cut of all of it. So he becomes very, very wealthy so that he doesn’t want competition. So if you grow up in Mexico, you can’t go in the grocery business, you can’t go in the trucking business, you can’t start a grocery store because that’s socialism and socialism creates poverty and therefore those people hate the rich, because rich people are people that they don’t have any chance to be.

In America, you can float into Los Angeles Harbor 8:00 in the morning and your three 711s by midnight. In America, you had the opportunity to go into business and create wealth. Therefore under free enterprise, we honor wealthy people because the only way you get money in a free enterprise system is that you do good things for people. Even if you don’t, you know, we get any money. You sit on the park bench and sit and rock. And the way that you become wealthy it’s the way you do more and so we honor those people, unless you are a socialist, unless you are Bernie Sanders, unless you are, you can name the folks in Latin America that have come here. Because they don’t understand, they literally do not understand how wealth is created. And if I can put in a word for politics, easy as pie. I think that that’s the real problem.

Why Are the Rich Rich?

You ask these folks and probably half the Republican caucus does not know why some people are rich and why some people are poor or what. And once you understand how to do it, then you’re hopeful. But let’s go back.

We elected a guy from Indonesia that hated the top 1% and so he in the process have began to increase taxes, the economy began to waver. He made agreements with China over the recent years in which the Chinese”€¦ what happened was that when you and I were growing up, it used to be that when you put money in the bank, the banker knew the folks that he could lend to, the people that worked hard and then loan money for a house, for a car, for a new crop, for a church wing. But about 25 years ago, they started taking that money and sending it to New York. And the New York Wall Street bankers would take that money and invest it in China and we began to see the sucking of investments in Main Street America began to go to China where they began building new airports and new buildings and new bridges.

If you look at the skyline of Shanghai just as an aside, the skyline of Shanghai in 1900 is the tallest building, is the Customs House but from the British. If you see the skyline of Shanghai, 1910, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 1980, the skyline is the same.

America and China

The beginning the 1980s, America began to invest in China and tell them that they could have a portion of free enterprise. Let me tell you what it was. When Mao Tse-Tung died, Deng Xaio-ping went down to Singapore. He met with Lee Kuan Yew and saw how beautiful Singapore was and he had never traveled, he didn’t know how this worked.

And so he said to Lee Kuan Yew, he said, my goodness, said, you mean Chinese people can do this? Lee Kuan Yew said, Chinese got nothing to do with it, freedom is what does it. He said, well”€¦ and so his 3-day turned into 10 days as he began to explain to them. That you have to have capital, somebody has to save, then you need an entrepreneur, somebody to invest, doing something that somebody wants and then they hire people that generate wealth. Those are the three people that are needed. If they don’t have any money, then they can’t do it. If the government owns it, then you sit there like a third-world country. That’s what you got.

So if you go, how do we get money to do that? He said, well, allow people from abroad to invest in your country. Said, well, but we’re communist. Yeah, that’s right. So therefore we have to have 51%. So anything that you invest in China, we get 51% of it. Well, it takes those folks in New York and New England about 15 minutes with their pencil, we keep 49, I mean, currently, government federal is taken 35 and you got New York is taken 15 and the city of New York taken 9 and we got about, why? And so they began to take their money and begin to invest over there.

Now the Chinese not being foolish, said, well this is fun. What we need to do is systematically conceive to watch where the critical places are. That is in order for the economist to work, you have to have strategic metals, let’s invest in the strategic metals. Find out where they are all over the world.

Then we have supply lines, things that are necessary to build things. Let’s make sure that we have a piece of the supply lines of all of the major productions in the world, such that 8 or 10 years from now, which was eight or ten years ago, you cannot build a Mercedes-Benz unless you have a piece that comes from China so they can control the production of air conditioners all over the world.

America does not produce any insulin, we are 100% dependent upon the Chinese for insulin as they systematically begin to denude the free enterprise system in America. And doing that economically, politically, they begin to assert themselves. And the one of the ways that they do it is by using their money to make gifts to governments in Africa and Latin America and says, we’ll build this stadium for you, we’ll do these things, but then you need to do what we say. You need to break off relations with Taiwan and you need to quit buying things from America.

China Puts The Squeeze On

And, they continue on, militarily, they in order to control the seas as Great Britain did for 250 years, rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves, you control the narrow spots. And so Gibraltar, the entrance to the Mediterranean was controlled by the British and Suez were controlled by the British at the other end. Therefore you controlled all the Mediterranean Sea and you can’t control the Cape of Hope and then you control Singapore which the South China Sea, 70% of all maritime traffic goes through the South China Sea, 100% of all the oil for the fourth largest economy, Japan comes through there.

And so during the 2000, the Chinese began to make little islands out of nothing and then they began to put airfields on top of them and in places where the ships could dock, so they control all of that. And as the head of the People’s Liberation Army said 18 months ago, we were appalled startled that America would not complain. Well, we had elected people who didn’t complain about that. And so they began to put the squeeze on all of our friends. As America’s economy began the collapse, they began to rise.
