Welcome to the intersection of faith and the culture, this is WallBuilders Live! Where we’re talking about today’s hottest topics on policy, faith, and the culture, always looking at it from a Biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective.
We’re having that conversation with David Barton, America’s premiere historian and our founder here at WallBuilders. Also, Tim Barton, national speaker, pastor, and president of WallBuilders. And my name’s Rick Green, I’m a former Texas state rep, national speaker, and author.
You’ve joined us on a Friday, well folks, that means it’s good news Friday. We love these Fridays, it’s an opportunity to share some good news with you from across the nation and around the world.
Virtually every Friday we get a chance to do this and David and Tim collect these great stories that are happening that just aren’t covered in the news and so on a Friday we do sort of a rapid fire report of these various stories. Some of them are few weeks old, some might be a couple of months old, some of my happened just in the last couple of days. But it’s a chance to catch up on some good news.
Religious Liberty Bills Are Getting Passed
David Barton is going to start us off with some good news. David, what’s our first piece of good news today?
Well, we’re going to talk about some legislation that’s working its way across the United States in state legislatures. A lot of state legislatures are now through for the year. A lot of the states just have 30-day sessions, or 60-day sessions, 90-day sessions.
We have a hundred and forty day session, but ours goes every other year, so we don’t have a legislative session next year. So these months right after election time, and this year was the 2016 election, those months right after, that’s where you see a lot of state legislation passed.
So, this particular year one of the things we talked about before where we were very involved in helping introduce pieces of legislation, I think the last time we talked about this a few weeks ago there were 169 pieces of religious liberty legislation that we got introduced across the United States working with Congressional Prayer Caucus Foundation and others.
But now we get some results back. And while not all the sessions are out, most of them are. So what we have so far, it’s ended up that in 2017, this year, there were nearly 200 religious freedom bills and resolutions proposed in 41 states.
So that’s a bunch of measures that were introduced. And so far 30 of those measures have been adopted or signed into law. Now, the reason that’s significant is in 2016 only 4 religious liberty measures were signed into law. This year we’ve already got 30 and it’s not over yet.
So that’s really good news on the religious liberty front, that you’re seeing. Again, 41 states with measures introduced to protect religious liberties. That’s a good movement going across the United States.
Wait, you said 30 had actually passed and been signed?
30 have already passed and been signed and become policy.
So we’re talking almost eight times, an eight hundred percent increase.
Yeah, exactly. Nearly eight times as much from last year at this time. Last year we were looking at four pieces of legislation to pass. This time is 30 so far. It’s not over yet, but 30 so far, which is great.
Is this regional, I mean, do you think there are just a few states doing all of that? Or has it kind of spread out across?
No, it’s really kind of spread out across the country. I don’t recall a single state that has had multiple passages of it. There may be a state that’s had a resolution and a bill. But no state is dominated out of the 30. It’s not that 22 were passed in Texas or something. They were scattered out all over the country and from some states that you really might not expect to get religious liberty legislation. So, that’s been a really good growth to see that.
Update On Coach Kennedy
And by the way, speaking of religious liberty, we got a note here from one of our listeners and they were saying, “You know, we saw the case with the football coach that was fired for taking a moment of silence. The episode was recently on Tucker on Fox News and coach Kennedy has been represented by First Liberty. What’s the deal? Are we going to hear more about that?”
And the answer is this, that was argued at the Ninth Circuit a few weeks back. The First Liberty guys were texting me back and forth as the arguments were going on. Sometimes you can tell out of the arguments how the decision may go but they said they were unable to tell. And listening to the oral arguments, of course, they were there, they were doing the oral arguments, they can’t really tell from the questions that were asked whether it’s a good or a bad deal.
Let me interject though, I’d be surprised if they got a good decision from the Ninth Circuit.
Well, you would expect that you probably won’t. But the questions were kind of ambivalent. Which a lot of times are pretty negative because you’re coming out of the Ninth Circus and this time it was hard for them to tell which is better news then- But again, we may not know this thing for 6-10 months.
Sure, but knowing how far left the Ninth Circuit is, I mean again, it would be kind of surprising if they came out even if they were neutral on the law, there’s no doubt about it that Joe Kennedy wins this case. There’s no doubt.
But generally, they’re not neutral. They’re generally way far left and so would not be surprising to see this not successful for Coach Kennedy for First Liberty coming out of the Ninth. But that’s not going to bother them. They’ll appeal to the supreme court and probably have a much decision if they don’t get a good decision from the 9th. They’ll probably have a much better decision from the U.S. Supreme Court because-
If the court takes it. That’s part of the issue. But the Ninth Circuit is the most overturned Federal Court of Appeals in the United States and has been for a number of years. They are really radical out there. We’ve had legislatures actually recently introducing measures that would cut the Ninth Circuit in half.
Because right now the 9th Circuit it sits over 54 million Americans, I think seven states that it controls, that’s a whole lot of Americans who never get common sense stuff in their policy.
A Unanimous Decision By The Supreme Court
And so that would be a real change if that were to happen. Now, if it does go to the Supreme Court, Here’s a piece of good news that just came down from the Supreme Court. In an 8-0 unanimous ruling ruled in favor of religious autonomy and religious liberties.
Why was it 8-0 not 9-0?
Because Gorsuch wasn’t on the court for the arguments he got on the court for the decision but didn’t-
So he could have given a decision but that would probably not have been great since he wasn’t there for the arguments.
He was not there for the arguments and so he said, “I wasn’t part of the argument. So I’m going to sit this one out.” But he wasn’t needed because it was an 8-0 decision and it deals with the retirement program that the Congress set up that they gave exemptions to religious organizations which is what was supposed to have happened in Obamacare. But then again you got Hobby Lobby, Conestoga Wagon, the Little Sisters of the Poor, and all these that have had to go to court on that. But the court, in this case, said, “No, when Congress gives an exemption to religious groups that exemption stands.” And that’s an 8-0 unanimous decision the U.S. Supreme Court this time it dealt with retirement law’s, and retirement benefits, and the right of hospitals to do that.
The other side was saying, “Wait a minute, it’s a hospital, that’s not a religious group.” Well, if it’s a Baptist hospital, or a Catholic hospital, or Methodist Hospital, why isn’t a religious group?
And think of how many are like that because we used to rely on charities and not government.
Yeah, that’s right. Well, but see this would also put the government in charge of saying what really is Methodist, and what really is Baptist, and what really is Catholic. And so the court really defer to religious autonomy. They said, “That’s not our decision to decide who’s really Catholic, Methodist, Baptist, or whatever.” Which is that in itself is a great decision.
That’s a big deal.
Alright guys, good news. Let’s take a quick break and get some more good news return right here on WallBuilders Live!

Our Dallas Leadership Program Transformations
Welcome back to WallBuilders Live! Thanks for staying with us on this Good News Friday! Let’s see, we had a little bit from David and Tim, so, I don’t know who’s going next, probably Tim?
Yeah, I’ll jump in on this one. Actually, I got a couple of emails that I just think are probably worth sharing, some fun stuff. Earlier this summer, I think the first two of weeks of June, Dad, you and I were part of a leadership training program.
Kind of an intern training program. We bring students in, and we’ve done this a WallBuilders for several years. This summer we partnered up with Mercury One which is Glenn Beck’s charity over in Dallas.
We went over to Dallas and we did this leadership training program and we had roughly 25 students from all over the U.S. that came in and were part of this training and really was just absolutely transformative for them.
The very last day I was asking all the different, and it’s 18 to 25 year old, so they’re mostly young adults, I guess is probably the most appropriate term for them but they’re in all different universities. Some of them are in grad school, and law school, so kind of across the board. Very eclectic mix, very bright kids, but they were at this leadership training program and at the end, we were just kind of asking them, “What stuck out to you? What was significant? What did you learn?”
And hearing the things that they really gained from that two-week training program was so rewarding for us to think that they have such a better grasp of knowing how to find truth, how to go to original documents, and sources, how to stand up for their faith. They were challenged to read their Bible and so many cool things.
We saw massive change. Every single one of those kids over those two weeks, we saw a significant shift. It was very visible to us and others who were just working around it.
It was and they really came from a very unique perspective, all of them. Some were very pro-faith, pro-Constitution, some of them thought they were and didn’t realize maybe where their position actually was when we started going-
They fit in that category George Barna told us about where they think they have a Biblical worldview but they don’t.
That’s exactly right.
And there were some who knew they didn’t have the Biblical worldview and are very happy with that. And so no matter where they were all of them took significant steps towards truth, towards the Bible, towards America’s founding, and towards Christian values. I mean, just really neat stuff. Seeing them go that direction.
Actually, we have another one of these programs coming up just in a couple of days matter of fact. Starting on Monday we’re doing another one of these leadership training sessions over in Dallas and this time-
Hey Tim, I know we’ve got listeners right now going, “Oh man, I wish that was me. I want to do that.” Are you going to have any more openings this summer? Do they have to wait till next year?
Yeah, you know, this summer we are probably maxed out for Monday’s.
Yeah, we have 50 in this group that come in.
And that is all, actually, it’s probably more than the room holds but we’re going to squeeze them in nonetheless. But next summer- this summer we did two sessions, next summer we’re going to try to do three sessions I think.
And we’re also going to be doing a session in December and seeing if we can’t pull that off.
Well yes, we’re external thinking right now. So the listeners are hearing us, we have not- because I know some people are going to go right now write on the December calendar. But that has not been confirmed.
David and I are just dreaming and Tim is like, wait, I know the details that have to be done before that.
He’s the adult supervision in the room.
Yeah, you’re telling the kids we’re going to Disney World and I’m like, don’t get their hopes up yet, right?
This is fun.Wallbuilders second half of the year planned, live on WallBuilders Live.
No, but we do want to start doing things to help equip more, really, as many people as we can and we want to facilitate that and make it the most beneficial that it can be. So we have another session coming up on Monday.
Anyway, so the whole point of this was I got an email from one of the moms-
Wait, I’m going to put commercial in because if you want to get an early start on next year where we’re going to do it. You can go to https://wallbuilders.com/iaw/ and you can go ahead and sign up now because it is limited and we cut it off at that number of folks so if you want to get it started next year, 18-25 years old, that’s where you go to sign up.
And if you want a leg up go to Patriot Academy this summer because you get to hang out with Tim and David both and convince them they should let you in this program.
That’s right. We actually encourage even the ones that do this leadership training program, if they want some additional training to go to Patriot Academy. But if you want to start with the Patriot Academy and then come to the leadership training program you certainly can do that too and we recommend certainly both those programs.
An International Impact
So, I got this email from a mom, she had two boys they came in and she called our office the week after the program ended just ecstatic about how much it had done, how much change she saw in her sons when they came home.
And she said actually she was talking to her sons pretty much every day, “Hey, what are you learning? How is it going?” In the midst of the conversation, she said that the last week her second son began to lament that he was very disappointed that the program was about to be over.
He said, “I wish I could do more of this and I wish they had more.” And so the mom in this e-mail said, “Is there anything you guys would do to offer additional training? We’ll pay more money, we’ll do whatever we have to do. They want to learn more.”
And it was just a fun e-mail to get this from a mom who has seen this dramatic change in her two sons they came in for just for two weeks.
And in those two weeks, such transformation took place where really we emphasized the Biblical worldview, the Christian heritage of our nation and government, and the Constitution, and so many fundamental things. Things that we used to kind of consider “being an American.” But we kind of do this American leadership training and go back to these core things.
Well, then I got a Facebook message from a young lady who is actually part of our intern training program, in this leadership training program. A couple of years ago she’s now over in Japan. She’s teaching English as a second language. And one of the things that she does for English, she teaches American history and this is part of their English curriculum, so they’re learning American history.
She uses a lot of the information that she learned from studying original resources to studying original documentation when she was doing this leadership training program with WallBuilders.
And she sent me a picture of a quiz. She said that the last question of the quiz was supposed to be something they had learned over the last couple of weeks in this American history English language class. And she showed me a picture of what one of the students said was the most significant thing they learned over the last several weeks and the quote they put down was that John Quincy Adams quote, “The duty is ours. Results are God’s.”
So this is a Japanese student learning American history via English as a second language, learning these incredible stories from John Quincy Adams saying, “Hey, the reason we do the right thing is because it’s the right thing.” And we live up to God the results.
Well, then she said that not only did one of the students say that was the most significant thing they learned. Another group of students, that next week they have some, I don’t know if it’s some kind of arts drama class or something, but she says they’re going to actually perform a skit of Naphtali Daggett based on the YouTube video we have telling the story of the pastor Naphtali Daggett. I mean just incredible stuff.
And that’s in Japan?
It’s in Japan.
Yeah, American history. But it’s another person who came to this leadership training program and was impacted and empowered with so much original source documentation, so many of these early stories they did know. And now she’s even taken it to Japan.
Just such fun stuff that we’re getting to see some of these results. So really, it’s a blessing for us because I know as parents I can only imagine, I know as a youth pastor, as a coach, you don’t always get to see the fruits of your labor of what you invested.
So it’s always so fun when you get these e-mails, when you have someone that did this leadership training sending a Facebook message saying, “Hey, I’m using what we learned.” So, really just kind of some fun stories on this good news Friday.
And not just good news for those individuals that experienced that. But what an example the truth is real, that when you put it in front of these millennials they get it, they take it, they run with it, and implement it. And then more lives are changed. I mean, just encouraging all the way around. Quick break, more good news when we come back, you’re listening to WallBuilders Live!
Hi, this is Tim Barton with WallBuilders and I want to encourage all the pastors out there with a unique opportunity that we’re presenting it WallBuilders. We’re doing a special tour just for pastors that you can come and learn more about the spiritual heritage of our nation. Not just seeing the sights but understanding the significance of what they are and what they represent.
We get to go to the Capitol at night. And we get to see the spiritual heritage of our Founding Fathers, of who we are as a nation, where we came from. We bring in congressman that will tell you about current legislation, about our religious liberties and freedom, and what’s going on in Washington D.C.
If you’re a pastor or if you want to recommend your pastor for this trip, you can go to our website at www.WallBuilders.com. And there’s a link that’s for scheduling. If you click on that link there’s a section for pastor’s briefing. There’s more information about the dates, when it’s going, and how it’s going to happen. If you want to know more about our nation, our religious liberties, our freedom, our spiritual heritage, this is a trip you want to be a part of.
Stopping Christian Persecution In The Middle East
Welcome back for more good news here on WallBuilders Live! Thanks for staying with us folks! We’re back with David Barton getting some more good news. David, I believe you’re up bro.
Yeah, Rick, this is good news coming out of the U.S. Congress. It deals with the slaughter of Christians over in the Middle East.
Which is not the good news.
That’s not good news but it comes out of Congress. We’ve had the slaughter going on now for a number of years. And with the slaughter that’s gone on and put it in perspective in the 1960s, there were about 30 million Christians living in the Middle East. Today it’s less than five hundred thousand.
So they are slaughtering Christians like crazy going on in nations across the Middle East and very little is being said about it, not much is being highlighted. And we’ve talked before, one of the organizations I helped head is an organization that does a lot of rescue work there.
We literally rescue people from ISIS. Yazidis live there as well. ISIS turns them into sex slaves and I think it’s about 1,400 Yazidi sex slaves we’ve been able to get away from ISIS and get them out.
Australia, bless their hearts, they take as many as we can send them. So Australia’s just open arms and welcomes these people, takes them and helps them recover from all the stuff that’s going on.
So with all the genocide that has gone over there, the Obama administration will not call it genocide until right when he was going out the door. As he goes out the door they finally announced the genocide. And when you announced the genocide then it changes the legal status for what you can do and giving aid.
So for eight years, Obama would not do anything to help stop the slaughtering of Christians the Middle East. Matter of fact, immigration coming in, and we’ve talked before, how that less than 1 percent of immigrants coming in from Middle East were actually Christian. And they’re the ones that need the protection and Ninety-nine percent were Muslim and they’re not the ones that need the protection.
So it was really goofed up thing going with the Obama administration. But now because we have this genocide declaration now under the Trump administration and under Speaker Ryan, they have just taken the first step toward moving aid into helping those Christians in the Middle East.
And so that’s really good that we’re now starting to do something to help those folks over there. And by the way, it is worse than what we think it is part of the intelligence we have with what we’re doing on the ground over there is what ISIS is now doing is not only taking sex slaves but they are now taking young children and they’re holding young children what they do is they are sending those children to Turkey and to other places where they are harvesting organs.
So they’re taking these kids, kidnapping, but instead of turning them in as sex slaves they’re turning them into organ farms. And they’re sending them- There are actually several nations I think Turkey is one of four or five that are taking these kids and they’re doing this organ harvesting. So it’s a bondable stuff that’s going on.
And again, by and large, these are Christian kids or religious minorities that are over there. So the fact that we now have Congress starting to act and intervene and start to send aid and start to help these folks in the Middle East whether it be stopping the organ harvesting or sending aid to the stuff that’s going on. That’s the first piece of good news.
Hero’s Fighting Against ISIS
And the second piece of good news is somewhat related to that. It’s a news story and it involves a guy by the name of David Eubank who was a former U.S. special forces guy but he’s now an aid worker over in the Middle East.
As ISIS was withdrawing, as they were leaving an area, they were just killing everybody behind them as they pulled out, anybody that left they just plowed through them. They blew up a Pepsi factory and he was there and saw all these dead bodies.
He and his colleagues are trying to defend themselves from ISIS trying to kill them and everybody else. And he and his colleagues are armed with machine guns. And as he looks out war they have slaughtered all these people, seeing all these dead bodies, but in the middle of the dead bodies, he sees a moving body. It’s a little girl that’s a toddler.
And ISIS is trying to take down him and his friends and all of them. So what he’s got is a black T-shirt and he puts on a helmet, he puts on a bulletproof vest over his T-shirt, then he gets his buddies to give them covering fire, and he runs out and he scoops up that girl.
Here’s what he said, “There was a woman sprawled on her face, dead. A baby all shot up, dead. Near them two old people, dead. And then you realize all those lumps of rags were kids, dead, dead, dead.”
But he sees this little girl moving among the dead. And so he gets his buddies to give him cover fire and he runs under fire while they’re trying to cover him. He runs, he grabs that girl in his arms, he takes her back, it took him 12 seconds to get out there under fire pick her up and get her back. So kudos to him, there are people really serious about trying to help those being attacked by ISIS. And David Eubanks is one of them.
Quick break we’ll be right back with more good news. Stay with you’re listening to WallBuilders Live.
Moment From American History
This is Tim Barton from WallBuilders with another moment from American history. Alexis De Tocqueville, a political official from France, traveled to the United States in 1831 and pinned his observations in the now famous book, “Democracy In America.”
Being from France, what he found in America was completely unexpected to him. He reported, “Upon my arrival in the United States, the religious aspect of the country was the first thing that struck my attention. And the longer I stayed there the more I perceived the great political consequences resulting from this. In France, I had almost always seen the spirit of religion and the spirit of freedom marching in opposite directions. But in America, I found that they were intimately united and that they reigned in common over the same country.”
Did Tocqueville recognized that it was Biblical Christianity and the morals it produced that made America great? For more information about Alexis Tocqueville and the positive influence of Christianity in early America go to WallBuilders.com.
What Statistics Say About Pro-Life
Welcome back. We’ve got just a little time for one more piece of good news. Tim, are you closing us off today?
I am. And it really seems like it would not be appropriate for me to have a good news Friday where we did not talk about something positive with life. I know for my dad’s mentioned it. It seems like every Friday there are positive things, and really in our stack, there’s so many good news related to the issue of life.
I have a Gallup poll that identifies 54 percent of Americans want all or most abortions made illegal. It goes through and breaks down- and we’ve had Barna on so many times and he talks about how you can skew polls and you can make polls say things based on the way you ask questions. I would actually say that 54 percent of all Americans wanting all or most abortions made illegal seemed like a low number to me. The reason I bring it up is because even when it’s a low number it’s to the majority of Americans who are against partial birth abortion and third-trimester abortion.
So this could be the outlier of your different polls and say, “Well, it’s only 54 percent and not 65, or 68, or some of the higher number polls you might can find, but even maybe your outlier. Even still then the majority of Americans go, “You know what, we think that is a life in the womb and that life should be protected.” So this is really good news that 54 percent of Americans say, “You know what, we need to protect the life of the unborn. No partial birth abortion, no third trimester, we want to see more victories but we’re going the right direction. So good news from this Gallup poll.
