Christmas Music

Rick:

I should’ve known I couldn’t dive into my normal introduction to the show. Anytime David Barton can request Christmas music, it’s going to happen.

**Snoopy and the Red Baron song**

Tim:

Well, we had to stop the Red Baron.  He was getting close.

Rick:

Yeah – who is that? I don’t know who that Christmas music is.

Tim:

The Red Baron?!

Rick:

Oh, that’s who it is.

Tim:

Well, that’s not who’s singing.  It’s about the Red Baron.

Rick:

I don’t know that song. Wow. I’m really Christmas ignorant at the minute

David:

Wait a minute, A Charlie Brown Christmas?

Rick:

I used to watch that when I was a kid, but I don’t remember that song!

Tim:

Snoopy is so disappointed in you right now.

David:

Are you kidding?  You missed a Charlie Brown Christmas?!

Rick:

Well–

David:

What country did you grow up in?

Rick:

I thought I saw it.  I just don’t remember that song.

Tim:

You’ll need to re-watch that.

David:

Wow.

Tim:

Yeah, you’ll need to.

Rick:

Is that?   Is that on, David?  On your playlist on your phone?

David:

Hey Christmas, just Christmas. I mean, if it’s a Christmas song, it’s on my playlist.

Rick:

Any Christmas song.

Faith and the Culture

Well for those that are wondering who these people are and what they’re talking about, we are WallBuilders Live.

You’re listening to David Barton.  He’s America’s premier historian and our founder here at WallBuilders. Also, Tim Barton, national speaker, pastor, and president of WallBuilders.

And my name is Rick Green.  I’m a former Texas state legislator.

WallBuilders Live is all about talking about today’s hottest topics on policy, faith and the culture and always bringing in a Biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective.

And if you go to WallBuilders Live, and you go back to our archives, you’ll hear David Barton playing Christmas music in July.  He just likes Christmas music year round.

So Tim and I like to give him a hard time here on the show. So, totally fine, you can play it now.  It’s after Thanksgiving.  It’s Christmas music time.  And it’s actually appropriate to play it now.  Right?

David:

Rick, it’s appropriate at any time, bro.

Rick:

Yeah, anytime.  I set you up for that – didn’t I?

David:

Yeah, you did.

Rick:

Just walked right into that one. We got two guests coming on later in the program.  Ray Comfort will be with us talking about his new movie on Christmas. And then we’ll have Rob Chambers from American Family Association talk about the Naughty and Nice List.

Does Christmas Matter?

But why is all of this so important culturally?  Does it really matter whether we emphasize Christmas or not? And what’s the role of Christmas in the story of America?

Tim:

Well, Rick, in the continuing and increasing secularization of the nation, we are certainly drifting away from founding principles.  Which, if you back up to the Founding Fathers, they were very clear that our nation needed religion and morality to sustain itself. Where John Adams says that our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people it’s wholly inadequate to the government of any the other.

If you go to George Washington in his farewell address where he talks about religion and morality are indispensable pillars to us maintaining our freedom and our liberty and maintaining America. Religion has been a vital part and largely because we recognize from the Declaration that the things that we have, the rights that we enjoy, come from God.

Naughty And Nice List

And the more our nation removes God, the more we lose sight of where our rights come from.  The more secular our government becomes, the more government thinks they are the ones that dictate and control this.  And that’s the reason it’s important for us to remember Christ in Christmas.  To take time to talk to Ray about this new movie which is really reaching out to people to tell them about Christ and Christmas.  And to talk about the American Family Association and their Naughty and Nice List.   https://www.afa.net/projects/naughty-or-nice/2017-naughty-or-nice-list/

And specifically, it’s those businesses that do a good job of really promoting family values at Christmas time.  The kind that you want to support.  And so if they’re on the nice list, you go support them.

But the reason this matters is because the more secular we become, the less America is America.   If we’re going to help to fight to preserve and defend America as a nation, we have to do the little things and some of these situations where Ray Comfort — we’ve got to start talking to people about God again.  We want to use Christmas as an opportunity to kind of get Christ back in the conversation. And then we want to support the businesses that support our family values.

Rick:

Yeah.

Tim:

And so, some really basics of why this matters. But as you look at our nation, and we can identify so many issues in our nation.  Now, we could talk about some very positive things too.

But certainly, there’s a lot of problems in our nation.  We’re not where we need to be. The only way to get the majority of those resolved is to get the moral foundation and the undergirding back underneath us as a foundation and that only happens through the restoration of God, Biblical truth, and Biblical principles in our culture.

Jesus Is The Reason For The Season

David:

And it is amazing that in a culture where that we are trying so hard to secularize everything.  I mean, we’re pushing God out of schools, out of public affairs, out of public arenas.  Now we’re even pushing God out of religious holidays. There is only one reason the holiday of Christmas exists and that is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

Tim:

What about Santa Claus?

David:

Yes.  See?  Exactly. Exactly. And so what we’re doing is taking–

Rick:

But we’ve secularized it, right? We’ve lost that.

David:

We’ve secularized it.

Holidays Have Been Secularized

Tim:

Well, what we’re doing is.  So if you look at Easter, modern Easter, you have how many kids in school who think Easter is about a bunny and eggs?

Rick:

Right.

Tim:

And what we are doing with Christmas now is we are no longer remembering that Christ is — that’s actually where the word Christmas comes from.  That Christ is in Christmas when we no longer remember Christ.  We have the majority of people now they talk Santa Claus.

And not that we can’t have a conversation about St. Nick, not that we can’t enjoy that.  Not that your family can’t do traditions.  That’s great. I’m not trying to downplay that if that’s what you want to do and that’s your family, that’s fine.

But if we don’t keep Christ in Christmas then it will become just like Easter.  We forget it’s the resurrection of Christ, and really, and now it’s just a big bunny with some eggs, which, that’s not even how bunnies are born. But whatever – we’ve confused that notion too.  Go back, right, to some kind of home-ec science that I don’t even know.  Where do we learn about animals and doing this?  Is that basically basic elementary because it’s not in high school?

David:

No, it was back in the FFA days and the 4H days is what it amounted to. But who covers that anymore.

Rick:

Right.

Veterans Day Without Vets?

David:

But we are at the point where we take solely religious holidays and try to make them completely secular. And it’s part of taking away the God-consciousness of the nation.  I mean, it’s as absurd as if we said, “Hey!  Let’s stop.  I’m tired of Veterans Day being about military guys.  Let’s make it about K4 kids and we’re going to have all this great stuff.”

Wait a minute.  It’s Veterans Day.  That’s about veterans. It is Christmas. The keyword to Christmas is Christ.  That’s why the holiday exists.

And so this is a time of year — and this is particularly hard as much as we’ve been shut back in the corner on so many others, we just can’t give up religious holidays.  As Tim said, like Easter, like Christmas, other things that are solely religious.  You can’t let them be co-opted by secular folks. At some point, you got to stand up and say, “No, religion morality, they are the indispensable support and you’re not going to take Christmas and make it a secular holiday.”

Rick:

Yeah and you — and Christmas is an opportunity actually to share the gospel.  That’s what Ray Comfort is going to talk about when he’s on with us when we come back from the break.

It’s just, hey, here’s the story of Christ, the birth of Christ.  The miracle of Christmas is something we should be sharing with people. So take advantage of the fact that people do still celebrate Christmas even though they don’t know what it’s really about.  We should be educating them about that.

So he’s got a cool movie that goes into this.  They had people all over the world doing exactly that with Christmas. Ray Comfort – our special guest when we come back on WallBuilders Live.

American History

This is Tim Barton from WallBuilders with another moment in American history. In 1963, the United States Supreme Court decided that voluntary Bible reading could no longer be part of the school day.

Founding Father Benjamin Rush, known as the father of public schools under the Constitution, pointedly warned that the Bible should be read in schools in preference to all other books.

He specifically warned that if America ever ceased promoting Biblical principles in schools then we would waste so much time and money and punishing crimes. It takes so little pains to prevent them.

He was right, we now have seven million Americans in prison on probation or on parole. The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Sadly, this was unnecessary but is the result of no longer teaching the morals of the Bible in schools.

For more information about the Founding Fathers views on the positive impact of the Bible in schools go to WallBuilders.com.

Guest Ray Comfort

Rick:

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live.  Thanks for staying with us. Our good friend Ray Comfort is with us from Living Waters. Always good to have you brother.  Thanks for coming back on.

Ray Comfort:

Thanks for having me on, Rick. Appreciate it.

Rick:

Hey!  New video out – Christmas Gone Viral – and of course, I want to ask you why you picked Christmas.  But I first want to ask you – How cool was it to have all these other people doing interviews in addition to you doing the interviews? I mean, you’re amazing at it.  But you’ve raised up a whole other generation out there doing the same thing that you’ve been doing for years.

Ray Comfort:

You know, TBN asked me to do a Christmas special.  I thought, “Well, I can do a Donny and Marie Osmond thing and sing for an hour, but it would bring tears to people’s eyes for the wrong reasons.  So I’ll try and do something different.”

Christmas Gone Viral

And I *thought it out and a third of the world celebrates Christmas.  That is two billion people celebrate the birth of Jesus. I thought, “Wow, the Apostle Paul in Athens and the whole country was given to idolatry.  He didn’t speak against their idolatry.  He got up and quoted Greek poets.”

And he obviously did that because he wanted to relate to his hearers.  He wanted to springboard into the Gospel. And what an incredible springboard Christmas is – 2 million, sorry – 2 billion people celebrating the birth of Christ. So I asked Christians around the world in different countries to take cameras and go in the streets and ask people what they thought of Christmas and then use that as a springboard for the gospel.

And it’s amazing.  It’ll bring you to tears.  It’s just so delightful to hear people speak in French and broken English sharing the gospel and having — seeing people right before their eyes soften to the message of Christ is wonderful.

Rick:

And it is interviews all over the world.   There’s some from France.  I mean you went to you — I guess you weren’t in all these locations.  You got others to contribute videos.  And like you said earlier, they’ve learned how to present the gospel in the same powerful way that you’ve been doing in your street ministry over the years.

But using Christmas as the springboard.  And I think part of your mission with this video is to get others to watch the video – either use the video or use Christmas as a springboard to share the gospel.

Ray Comfort:

Yeah, both. You know, Rick, I — whenever I get interviewed people say to me, “How come you’re so zealous in your evangelism?” And I say it’s because I’m a Christian. I’m a normal Biblical Christian.  We have forgotten that hell exists, that people when they die if they die in their sins, end up in hell.  Oh, what horror beyond words.

So I’m not asking people to go get a soapbox, and stand up in a local university, and plead with sinners, and warn every man as the Bible tells us to do. I’m saying use the share button. We just put this movie onto YouTube and it’s already had thousands — we just did it yesterday and it has thousands of views and our YouTube channel has had over 49 million views.

Watch Free On YouTube

So this is a wonderful way to get the gospel in an inoffensive way into the hands of the lost.  So, two major networks TBN and Daystar I get to screen this whole movie in mid-December.  That’s very exciting.  But at the moment people can watch it free on YouTube, and get the DVD, and share it with those they love.

Rick:

Now they will have to watch the video to figure this out.  But my only question is – how did you get the sunglasses to stay on the dog?

Ray Comfort:

*laughs*

The power of prayer, I tell you.

Rick:

*laughs*

Ray Comfort:

There’s a lot of reward to get a dog to do that. And so I was giving him rewards when he kept them on. So it really is different, isn’t it? And it’s so many people said they couldn’t help but laugh every time they thought of it and every time they saw it in their mind.

Rick:

I loved it, absolutely loved it. So it is really cool the tools that we have now.  Like you said, not — most people aren’t going to have the courage and wherewithal to go put the box out there and stand on it and share the gospel in a street ministry situation.  But like you said, all you got to do is click the share button. Put this video — share the — there’s even a teaser so you can share the one-minute teaser on Facebook.  And that’ll send them.  It’s real easy.  You watch the one minute on YouTube and then there’s an easy, another click button to watch the full one hour program.

Ray Comfort:

And they can watch it free of charge on LivingWaters.com -completely free. We’ve got the videos– DVDs sorry — available I think a dollar each when you get them.  So you can put them in a Christmas stocking if you’re giving people stockings for Christmas.

Living Waters

Rick:

That’s fantastic – love it. Ray Comfort, God bless you brother. Living Waters and so many other great resources too. I mean, this is a perfect timing obviously for Christmas in this particular video to share.  But so much truth there.  So many good things that we want to send people to check out.  We’ll have links to the website today as well.

Ray, we love you brother.  Keep up the great work, man.

Ray Comfort:

Thank you, Rick, God bless you.

Rick:

Stay with us, folks.  When we come back, Rob Chambers will be with us from American Family Association sharing an update on their Naughty and Nice List. Rick:

Welcome back.  Thanks for staying with us today. We have Rob Chambers with us from American Family Association–Rob, thanks for coming on today.

Rob Chambers:

Hey, Rick, thanks much. Thank you.

Rick:

It’s that time of year for the Naughty and Nice List. Every year, love having you guys on to talk about the companies that are out there that are actually encouraging Christmas and not running away from Christ in this wonderful holiday that’s based on His birth. So you guys keep tabs on this.  You all actually research the companies that shy away from or even don’t allow you to say “Merry Christmas.”   Don’t allow their employees to say “Merry Christmas.” How’s it looking this year?

Naughty and Nice List

Rob Chambers:

Yeah, it’s looking good. You know about 10 years ago we started this list rigged on the basis that so many of these companies were going the politically correct direction, and just saying “Happy Holiday” and just steering away from Christmas in total. What we’ve noticed though is, there has been a change in this in the attitude of more stores mentioning Christmas in their advertising.  So we’re glad to see that. We’re glad to see that there are as many as 50 of the retailers that are basically Christmas friendly or make mention of Christmas.  That’s a great up tune.

Rick:

And that’s — these are major retailers. You got the list.  Of course, folks can go to your website right now and take a look and we’ll have a link to make it easy at WallBuildersLive.com to jump right over there.

Rob Chambers:

Right.

Rick:

But if you want to go straight to AFA.net, you can also get on their e-mail list.  Listen to their radio programs, AFA Action.  There’s a lot of great, great, resources there at American Family Association.

And then this one is called the Naughty or Nice list.   So you got a list there of the companies from, man, Bed Bath and Beyond, to HEB, to Cracker Barrel, Big Lots, Toys R Us – bunch of them that are on the nice list and you got some marginal ones and then some naughty ones.

Rob Chambers:

Right.

Rick:

Tell us what gets the company into the marginal or naughty list.

Rob Chambers:

Yeah. A marginal company gets in the marginal list basically if they refer to Christmas infrequently or they only use the name Christmas in maybe select advertising mediums. So they may put it in a, maybe in a particular online advertisement, but by and large, they do not promote Christmas. And so there’s a handful of those like for example, Amazon or Starbucks are examples of a corporation that would be marginal.

Rick:

Gotcha. Okay. And then what about naughty? What’s it take to get on the naughty list?

Rob Chambers:

Yeah, naughty, you know, they get the coal, and ashes, and all that stuff. *laughter* No, these are companies that basically do not recognize Christmas in their advertising mediums.  So that’s not part of their corporate advertising platform.  That’s what makes them part of the naughty list.  They use Christmas maybe sparingly and maybe in a single or unique product description like a Christmas tree they may say, “Here is our Christmas tree.”  That may be the only reference they would give.  That warrants them to be on the naughty list.

So basically, what we’re trying to do, Rick, is really trying to help shoppers to see the stores that are putting the real meaning of Christ in Christmas even though it may be just a simple mention.  But it’s not – this is a time of Christmas – it’s not a holiday. You know, Christ came into the world and so what we want people to really help keep on their minds through this naughty and nice list is that there’s a reason for Christmas and that’s Jesus.

Rick:

Yeah, yeah. And it is, some people, every year we do this I know you get the same e-mails and calls saying, “This is trivial. What does it matter if they say ‘Merry Christmas?’”

It does matter because.  First of all, just as a nation acknowledging Christ, and acknowledging what this holiday is all about, and why it has been so important in our nation, that the idea of acknowledging Christ and in having a God consciousness.

Rob Chambers:

Amen.

Rick:

Is vitally, vitally important to us as a nation. And then it’s important just on an individual level.  When you walk into a store and that store is actually sharing the joy of of what we’re actually celebrating. There’s just a different atmosphere when you’re met with “Merry Christmas” versus “Happy Holidays.”  I mean, it really is because there’s such a difference in the meaning behind it.  So it’s a good thing to know.

And, Rob, I mean, part of this is literally voting with our dollars.  Right? I mean rewarding those companies that are acknowledging Christ and shying away from those that don’t. I shouldn’t say “shying away from” – staying away from those that don’t. Because look, your dollars matter and you want to encourage a corporate policy.

Rob Chambers:

Right.

Rick:

That’s going to be good and this just gives you a little bit of a hint into what’s going on many times in those board meetings and behind the scenes in the philosophy of what’s running that company.  Sometimes just innocent and it’s a marketing company.  But a lot of times it really gives you a hint into what kind of folks are running that company.

Rob Chambers:

It really does. And so yeah, I would encourage people again to go to AFA.net and if I could mention one other thing, Rick.

Rick:

Yeah.

Rob Chambers:

We have some of — well, we have the AFA Christmas wristband. You know this may be trivialized.  People might consider this like a wristband with maybe some slogan on there.  But we have wristbands that we’re making available they can go to AFA.net on these wristbands and it just says, “Keep Christ in Christmas.”

It’s green with white tags, has a red cross and so it’s a great conversation starter as they are out in the stores and people say, “Oh I like your — I like that wristband keep Christ in Christmas.”  It’s an opportunity to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with people while they’re out shopping, or with the person at the retail counter, or the cashier, whomever it may be.  It’s a great opportunity and conversation starter to share the true meaning of Christmas.

Rick:

That’s great. So just go directly to AFA.net for those?

Rob Chambers:

Yeah, you can look — go to AFA.net.  It’s at the top of the website.  You’ll see it.  It’s really clear. Can’t miss it.

Rick:

Alright, and Rob, one other thing I want to point out is I think virtually everybody you’ll find on the naughty or the marginal list, there’s a counterpart on the nice list.  Dollar General is on the naughty list, but Dollar Tree is on a nice list.

I mean, that’s not a random thing, folks. This is based on the research of seeing who’s actually keeping Christ in Christmas.

I don’t think there’s any item that you’re going to be prevented from being able to get for your loved ones and purchase this Christmas. There’s somebody on the nice list that’s going to have it.  That sound accurate to you, Rob?

Rob Chambers:

That is very accurate, Rick.  I appreciate you pointing that out because I had not thought about that.  But that’s a super point that if you see a company, they’re on the naughty list.  You’re right there.  Look over there to the left side of the page and there’s a whole list there that are honoring, in some form or fashion, the Christmas season.

Hobby Lobby Is a Great Store To Support

Rick:

And I would even add, some companies like Hobby Lobby that’s on the nice list that has stood for our religious liberty, and fought so well for us and in a lot of the cultural areas.  And the family has funded the Bible Museum in Washington.  What a great way to support them. When you’re spending those Christmas dollars and getting those gifts, hey man, Hobby Lobby is a great place to go and do that.  So there are some others on the list as well.

Man, we appreciate you, Rob, appreciate everybody at the American Family Association and what you guys are doing.  What a great tool for us to share with folks.  AFA.net is the website to get there.  Check out that Naughty and Nice List. Appreciate you coming on, Rob.

Rob Chambers:

Hey thanks, Rick. Merry Christmas.

Rick:

That’s Rob Chambers – American Family Association. Stay with us.  We’ll be right back with David and Tim Barton.

Biographical Sketches

Hi friends! This is Tim Barton of WallBuilders. This is a time when most Americans don’t know much about American history or even heroes of the faith. I know, oftentimes as parents, we’re trying to find good content for our kids to read.

If you remember back in the Bible, the Book of Hebrews it has the Faith Hall of Fame, where they outlined the leaders of faith that had gone before them. Well, this is something that as Americans we really want to go back and outline some of these heroes not just of American history, but heroes of Christianity and our faith as well.

I wanted to let you know about some biographical sketches we have available on our website. One is called, “The Courageous Leaders Collection” and this collection includes people like Abigail Adams, Abraham Lincoln, Francis Scott Key, George Washington Carver, Susanna Wesley, even the Wright brothers.

There’s a second collection called, “Heroes of History” in this collection you read about people like Benjamin Franklin, Christopher Columbus, Daniel Boone, George Washington, Harriet Tubman, the list goes on and on.

This is a great collection for your young person to have and read. And it’s a providential view of American and Christian history. This is available at WallBuilders.com.

Rick:

Welcome back.  Thanks for staying with us here on WallBuilders Live. Thanks to Ray Comfort.  Encourage you to check out that movie. We’ll have links today at our website today.

And then also American Family Association just does a great job of keeping us up to date on this and so many other issues.  So be sure visit their website at AFA.net as well. David, Tim, make sure you’re shopping at the nice list – not the naughty list.

Tim:

Well, Rick, two things.  Let me back up to Ray Comfort first. I don’t think there’s anybody who does a better job of engaging people on the street than Ray Comfort.

Rick:

Yeah.

Tim:

And I, you know, there’s several people I will watch their youtube videos because I want to learn to communicate better. Ben Shapiro is one.

Rick:

Yeah.

Tim:

When Ben Shapiro does Q&A at colleges and universities I try to watch and just learn the way he answers and responds to things thinking, “Okay that’s brilliant.  I’m going to use that argument.  I’m going to use that thought and that defense.”

Well, Ray Comfort does the same thing when it comes to sharing our Christian faith. He is so good at engaging people in conversations, at showing you how to be relational, how to talk to people, how to think ahead of where you’re trying to lead them. And then so what he’s doing with this whole even use Christmas to teach people about Christ and get them back. Brilliant idea and certainly something that we need to be doing as Christians.

But I really do appreciate the American Family Association because I, just like many families, we spend money at Christmas trying to get gifts for people.

And if I’m going to support somebody’s business, I want to support somebody’s business who supports my values. And so I really appreciate what they do going and giving the list.

Actually, it was interesting.  We, you know, we got an e-mail from them very recently where they were telling us, “Hey, the list that we initially sent you guys is not totally correct because somebody has just changed their position.”  And it was Academy – Academy Sports and Outdoors was on the naughty list. And then in the last week or two, they’ve changed their position which I’m grateful for because as an outdoors guy, as a shooter, and a hunter, and athlete, there’s a lot of things I get from Academy Sports and Outdoors.

Not Supporting a Company That Is Going to Spend My Money Attacking What I Believe

So I’m grateful now that I can, I guess, kind of morally justify going and spending money there. But I really do appreciate knowing these people that support our values so that I know where are good places to spend my money and feel good about it knowing I’m not going to support someone who’s going to take that money and attack the very things I believe.

David:

Yeah, we were talking at the beginning about how the effort now is to even take Christ out of Christmas. I mean, that is His holiday above all others – that and Easter.  And I’m not going to economically reward people that are trying to do that very thing.

They’re trying to secularize the holiday.  It just doesn’t even make sense. Tim, you remember a couple of years ago that you and I found Tractor Supply on the naughty and nice list or the naughty list. And you and I both wrote them and said, “* guys, we’re not going to do business.” And they wrote back and said, “Oh, my gosh we didn’t know we hadn’t done–”  And suddenly Christ starts appearing all throughout their advertising, Christmas is everywhere.

You know, so sometimes it’s they just hadn’t noticed.  But if they’re hostile, if they really are hostile, I’m not going to reward them.

Tim:

Right.

David:

I’m not going to give an economic incentive to try to take away the remaining aspects of Christianity that we still acknowledge in the culture. That’s for sure.

Rick:

Well, it comes back to something we’ve talked about on the program a lot which is we vote with our dollars.  So we’re either going to encourage something, and enable something or we’re — you can help to change it. And just like you said with the Tractor Supply thing.  By taking those steps we were able to help change it. And we just have to you know, not just think about what’s convenient for us, and the closest store, or whatever it might be, but actually say, “My little bit, coupled with all those other hundreds of thousands of listeners at WallBuilders Live that might go do the same thing can really make a difference.” So let’s join forces with AFA on that and make some good decisions in our Christmas shopping.

Help Spread The Message Of Christ In Christmas

And might I say, a great place to go do your Christmas shopping is WallBuilders.com. Get your family the tools they need to be good citizens.  There’s even kids books there now, the TV shows, there’s Constitution classes.  There’s great books on just basic education about so many things in America’s history, and fantastic DVDs that are all done super high quality. So what better thing to give your family than freedom for Christmas?  Thanks for listening today to WallBuilders Live.
