Faith And The Culture

Rick:

You found your way to the intersection of faith and the culture. This is WallBuilders Live! where we talk about today’s hottest topics on policy and faith in the culture.

We always look at those things from a biblical historical and constitutional perspective. We’re here with David Barton, America’s premier historian, and our founder at WallBuilders. My name is Rick Green. I’m a former Texas legislator, and Tim Barton is with us. He’s a national speaker and pastor and president of WallBuilders. You can find out more about all three of us at WallBuildersive.com.

Get A List Of Our Stations Across The Country

It’s our main web site for the radio program so you can get a list of all of our stations across the country where we can be heard. You can also get a list of the archives.

If you missed some programs you’d like to catch some of the interviews, maybe that you missed or some Good News Friday or Foundations of Freedom Thursday, all of that’s available right now at Wallbuilderslive.com by simply clicking on the Archives section.

You Have The Opportunity To Become A Part Of Our Team

While you’re there on the website, there is a button in the top right corner that says contribute. It’s a blue button. If you hit it, you’re going to have the opportunity to become a part of our team by contributing to what we’re doing.

When you make that donation when you contribute financially to Wallbuilders Live, I just won’t tell you what happens with that, which allows us to add stations to the program. To expand the program, it allows us to train pastors, legislators, and young people on these founding principles.

It allows for this message to go out and equip and inspire more people. You’ll have more constitution classes happening in communities across the country. You’ll have more opportunities for young people to get the leadership skills they need to be the biblical leaders we need tomorrow.

All of those things happen as a result of your contributions. We’re a listener-supported program. So those contributions at the website are what make the program possible.

Thank you so much for considering that today. You can make a one-time contribution, or you might want to make a monthly contribution. That’s even better for us because it allows us to plan and coordinate, have staff – all the things over the next year that it takes to grow and expand this message. So thank you so much for listening today. Thank you for being someone that supports the program.

OK, guys later in the program, Dr. Everett Piper will be with us.

Every topic we talk about here on WallBuilders Live, sometimes people may not catch on that the reason we’re discussing these subjects is because of the impact these subjects have on the future of our nation.

It’s not just to you know bat around, philosophize, complain – any of those things. This is to say, hey; there are things happening that are good that are gonna produce good results or things happening that are bad. They’re going to produce bad results.

Watching College Campus and The Classroom Closely

One of the areas we had to really watch closely is the college campus and the classroom itself because what’s happening there is going to impact the next generation greatly.

Man, everybody’s headed back to these college campuses where you know they’re there got the safe spaces and the snowflakes and all this stuff going on. And that is going to have a price.

David:

Well, here’s a quote attributed to Abraham Lincoln, where he says the philosophy of the schoolroom in one generation will be the philosophy of government and the next. Rick, that’s what you’re talking about.

We look at this stuff because we’re looking at what our government is about to become. The young people we have in college right now will be leaders in every area.

What we see right now in college; that’s what you’re going to hear in the pulpit. That’s what’s going to be broadcast on media. That’s what arts and entertainment are going to look like. That’s what family language will sound like.

That’s what politics is going to be. That’s what judges are going to rule in every area “€” going back to that quote attributed to Lincoln, everything that’s going on in the schoolroom right now. That’s going to be the world in which we live in the next generation.

That’s A Massive Scary Thought

Tim:

And that’s a little bit of a scary thought. Actually no, that’s a lot of a bit of a scary thought. Not not a little bit. That’s a massive scary thought. We have seen and talked about this on and off the air.

We’ve talked about this extensively; certainly off-the-air and a lot of conversations looking at Texas where one of the thoughts backing up to the that last Senate election we had with Ted Cruz and Beda O’Rourke. Where Ted just barely won that election.

The thought was that there had been so many people coming into Texas from other states that they’re you know they’re probably liberal, and they’re secular, and they’re bringing in these liberal and secular ideas with them.

But then when you take a closer look at some of the exit polling in and some of the voter data, what you find is that Ted Cruz actually had a majority of votes from people who were transplants in Texas, not native Texans. Meaning they came from California, New York, Oklahoma, Florida wherever. They moved from other states into Texas, and they ended up voting for Ted Cruz.

Opposing Open Borders Is Seen As Bad Thing

Beto O’Rourke, his largest kind of demographic, actually was young voters who were born in Texas. What that told us is that the kids who are growing up in these schools in Texas are getting fed such a steady diet of maybe big-hearted poor information thinking where their hearts are: we want to help people so what they’re told is the best way to help people well is you have open borders.

Anybody that opposes open borders it’s because they’re mean, they’re hateful and blah blah blah. And free college. So probably from a good-hearted perspective, many of them have bad information so they’re thinking bad thoughts, which the things they’re promoting would produce very dangerous things in the future of our nation.

We Need To Look At Our Education System

Nonetheless, the point was: Texas was not becoming as liberal was as we were battling because of liberals moving into Texas. It was the education system. Again, the point of this conversation is education even in red states; states that you would traditionally consider being very conservative or even religious, many times at the core right kind of the heart of what used to be known as the bible belt.

There’s so much happening in education that is so contrary to what is beneficial for the future of the nation that if we don’t do something to help change the modern climate and culture in education, the future of our nation is in a lot of trouble.

One of the guys who we’ve worked with for a lot of years, who has been an ally alongside us. He’s been on the program many times who’s been fighting to help change some of the climate and culture in education is Dr. Everett Piper.

Coming Up With Creative Thoughts And Strategies For How To Solve Some Of These Problems

Dr. Piper, who had been the president of Oklahoma Wesleyan University for many years, recently stepped down. He’s now doing lots of other things working with other groups, helping them come up with creative thoughts and strategies for how to solve some of these problems.

He’s someone who is inside the belly of the beast and took over a school that was not nearly as strong in their biblical positions – when he got there as they were when he left. He helped bring them in a very good biblical direction.

So if we’re going to talk about how do we solve these problems in education, he’s a really good guy to talk to.

His article in the Washington Times is well worth a read. We’ll have a link today at Wallbuilderslive.com.

But even better, we got him right here on the program today. Stay with us, Dr. Everett Piper, our special guest on WallBuilders Live.

Snowflake And Safe Spaces

Rick:

A great article last month in the Washington Times. As everybody was headed back off to the school. Everybody, meaning our college students headed off to these institutions of indoctrination. We like to refer to them around here, most of them not all of them. You used to head up a great university that wasn’t one of those. But you point out in the article look this is gonna have an impact this whole snowflake thing and safe spaces. These are the people that are going to be our judges and leaders in our communities in a few years. So what are you suggesting we do to turn it around; actually before we go there -

Some of our listeners may be wondering what we mean when we say snowflake or safe space. Is that just a joke, or is that really happening on campuses?

Dr. Piper:

Oh, there’s no question it’s happening. In fact, the list of absurdities is so long we could spend an hour or two of your showtime talking about some of these crazy scenarios that are taking place on campuses from Emory to Yale to Southern Illinois University. At American University, University of Wyoming, University California, San Diego, Berkeley Virginia Tech, Michigan State.

Students Have Become Offended By An Idea That They Don’t Like

All of these institutions have recently had stories where students have become offended by an idea that they don’t like.

So rather than wrestling with that idea trying to come up with a cogent argument to counter it like good education used to teach us to do, these students will pout and prance and protest in the classroom, in the dormitory, in the campus square, and the student center. They will actually silence those that are trying to communicate that unpopular idea.

Guess what, Rick? The unpopular idea is almost always a Judeo-Christian idea. A biblical idea. A conservative idea.

Ben Shapiro And Star Parker

Ben Shapiro, for example, everybody has probably heard this one, but it’s the iconic example. In answer to your question, Ben Shapiro is a Conservative Jew. He has been protested and censored at the University Berkeley, Berkeley, California.

He is not welcome on their campus.

Now, Berkeley is supposed to be the birthplace of the Free Speech Movement, but they are shutting down and sequestering Ben Shapiro because he simply has conservative ideas and conservative solutions to today’s questions and problems.

He’s unwelcomed. He’s verboten. He’s expelled.

This is taking place from campus to campus, and let me say this, and I’ll take a breath. Even at Christian universities, the University of North Western St. Paul which is a Council for Christian Colleges and Universities school, a Christian school that has actually told one of their student groups that they cannot have Star Parker, a conservative African-American speaker, on their campus because her views are “too divisive.”

So, they won’t even allow Star Parker to come and speak on their campus because she has unpopular views. The list goes on and on Rick.

How Will That Translate Into Real Life For The Students?

Rick:

Yeah, it is. It is teaching them that if you ever encounter something that you don’t agree with, that you can just stop that person from even expressing they’re their view.

How will that translate into real life for the students?

I mean they’re gonna be in some company, somewhere working or running their own business or perhaps in the political realm. If they take that idea into that realm, for one, they’ll run their company into the ground, and they’ll run our country into the ground.

Dr. Piper:

Well, that’s exactly the way I conclude my article that you’re referring to in The Washington Times. I asked this question at the end of the article after listing all of these scenarios that I just cited.

I say it may be tempting to think that this is all foolish academic theater, and it’s disconnected from the real world, and you don’t have to worry about it. But I would argue that would be a mistake. Don’t do that.

What Is Taught Today In The Classroom Will Be Practiced Tomorrow In Our Culture

I say this: today as law students and business majors will be tomorrow’s judges and CEOs. The students who now want to ban Plato, Aristotle, Jefferson, and Jesus from the college curricula will soon be tomorrow’s teachers. The protesters you see in tonight’s news will be the politicians you see in tomorrow’s Congress.

Never forget this one rule: what is taught today in the classroom will be practiced tomorrow in our culture. We must recognize that ideas always have consequences, and this stuff will come home to roost.

What Does Average Joe Do To Turn This Around?

Rick:

What do you propose as solutions, like action steps, for average Joe out there? I know what we ask our legislators to do is to stop funding this madness: start putting some free speech safeties and all those things that we’ve talked about for policies.

But what does average Joe do to try to turn this around?

You Have To Have Courage. You Have To Have Spine

Dr. Piper:

I think, number one: you have to have courage, and you have to have a spine. If you’re willing just to be quiet because you don’t want to engage in a debate,

you don’t want to suffer the immature juvenile reaction of a culture that wants just to have a temper tantrum in the grocery store because Mom won’t give him that one dollar toy. If you’re not willing to deal with that, then part of the problem rests on your shoulders. You have to have courage. You have to have spine.

You have to engage in the public square. You have to speak, and if you don’t like Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, not to speak is to speak and not to act is to act. Silence in the face of evil is evil itself. God will not hold you guiltless.

If We Speak In Mass People Will Listen To Us

So what we have to recognize we have a responsibility, and if we speak in mass, people will listen to us.

I know for a fact that the University of Missouri, when one of their professors and their students started doing this stuff a couple of years ago; the following year they had to mothball dormitory floors because people voted with their feet and they voted with their pocketbook, and they said we’re not going to pay for this nonsense. We’ll send our kids someplace else. So that’s the one thing you can do: you can do it boldly and clearly.

WholeFood Protests

Rick:

I love that. I love that. Before I let you go, Dr. Piper, I’m just curious about your take on how when the left supports this kind of policies and then it comes back to bite even them. I don’t know if you saw the story about WholeFoods and how they’re asking these Leftist protesters to stop chaining themselves to doors and all that.

Whole Foods has a liberally run board of directors and definitely not what you’d call a conservative corporation. But now, the left is even unhappy with them after all the things that that they’ve done.

So this comes home to roost not just for the nation as a whole or for us as conservatives but even for them. You’ve seen a little bit of that on college campuses, as well when these liberal professors and liberal administrators have to live with the results of what they’ve sown. I mean, what do you think about that?

The Left Have Created A Monster, And It’s Turning Around To Consume Them

Dr. Piper:

Well, you are spot on. The left has created a monster, and it’s turning around to consume them, and they know this.

One of the most fascinating interviews I’ve ever done, it was a joy. I had a blast. I was on the Rubin report for one hour.

Never Bow The Knee To The Rage Mob. Never

Now, Dave Rubin and I disagree on a lot of stuff. A lot of stuff. When it comes to sexual morality, sexual love, the objectivity of the sexual norm, and the sexual standards. But Rubin has recognized that as a former radical left young Turk who has now left the left. He is more of an honest libertarian today. He recognizes that it was his own that was consuming him, fighting against him, and becoming ideological fascists against him more than the conservative right.

So he is more and more intrigued by conservative principles, traditional principles because he recognized says that those bring more freedom than the progressive left.

I don’t know who gave me this quote, so I can’t cite it, but it’s not original with me.

It’s a very brief quote, and it’s perfect in summary for this: “never bow the knee to the rage mob. Never.”

Never bow the knee to the rage mob never because it will do you no good. If you bow the knee to the rage mob, they will not exonerate you. They will still execute you.

Rick:

So true. So true. I think that the article I’d seen on the WholeFoods thing, the headline was something to the effect of no corporation will ever woke enough to satisfy the leftists. They’re always going to go for more.

Dr. Piper God bless you, brother. Keep up the great work out there, and I look forward to having you back again soon.

Dr. Piper:

All right. Blessings Rick.

Stay with us, folks. Be right back with David and Tim Barton.

We Want To Hear Your Vet Story

Rick:

Hey friends! If you have been listening to WallBuilders Live for very long at all, you know how much we respect our veterans and how appreciative we are of the sacrifice they make to make our freedoms possible. One of the ways that we love to honor those veterans is to tell their stories here on WallBuilders Live. Once in a while, we get an opportunity to interview veterans that have served on those front lines that have made incredible sacrifices have amazing stories that we want to share with the American people.

One of the very special things we get to do is interview World War II veterans. You’ve heard those interviews here on WallBuilders Live, from folks that were in the Band of Brothers, to folks like Edgar Harrell that survived the Indianapolis to so many other great stories you heard on WallBuilders Live.

You have friends and family that also served. If you have World War II veterans in your family that you would like to have their story shared here on WallBuilders Live, please e-mail us at [email protected].

Give us a brief summary of the story, and we’ll set up an interview. Thanks so much for sharing here on WallBuilders Live!

Coddling College Campuses And A Crippled Culture

Rick:

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live. Thanks for staying with us today. A special thanks to Dr. Everett Piper for joining us here once again on Wall Builders Live, and again, the article will be at our website Wallbuilderslive.com.

It’s called, “Coddling college campuses and a crippled culture – If the snowflake insanity persists, so will the demand for ‘safe spaces.’

Back now with David and Tim. Guys, just as Dr. Piper was talking about this, this will have its impact on the culture. It’s gotta stop. It’s already costing. There’s going to be damage, no doubt, but we can curb that if we’ll start making those changes now.

He said a vote with your feet – where you send your kids to school, where your money goes is a way to vote against this nonsense.

Vote With Your Feet, Your Money

Tim:

Yeah. One of the things we talked about is there’s a growing percentage of Americans who are getting out of the public school program, who are now homeschooling their kids, who are trying to find private schools or Christian schools because they recognize some of the brokenness inside of the system.

So, voting with your dollars is a very good thing to do. Voting with your body so to speak of, hey, I’m leaving this. I’m going to do something else is what really needs to be done, and it is a challenge for many families.

If you look at the college football season, this is our school. It’s our team. It’s who we cheer for, and one day our kids are gonna go there.

You Are Crippling People Who Need To Be Toughened Up

There’s a lot of thoughts from families that we just have this loyalty to this college. Even though we love college sports -college football, it’s awesome. It’s super fun. But it’s not worth our kids; their hearts and their mind by sending them to a school that we really love because we cheer for the football team.

There’s something much bigger happening. Dr. Piper is right. We have to start standing up and letting them know we’re not approving of this. He listed almost a dozen schools, and the list could keep going, as he mentioned.

We could talk for hours about some of the nonsense happening on college campuses where we are promoting these safe spaces, where we’re coddling kids. If you feel bad, we’re bringing in these petting zoos and puppies.

I’m not opposed to bringing in petting zoos and puppies on principle because that’s awesome. Everybody loves animals petting zoos; that’s fun.

But to think that we have to have this to help you emotionally survive midterms or some speaker on campus who made you feel bad – you are crippling people who need to be toughened up because they’re going to have to be leaders of their families: leaders and the marketplace. Leaders ultimately in a nation. That’s not what we’re producing in universities right now.

Rick:

No doubt. Quick break, guys. We’re gonna be right back. We got time for one more segment. You’re listening to WallBuilders Live. Check us out at Wallbuilderslive.com.

America’s Hidden History

Hi, this is David Barton.

And, this is Tim Barton, and we want to let you know about a series that’s happening right now on TBN on Thursday night. TBN is the Trinity Broadcasting Network. Every Thursday night, there’s a series that we’ve filmed called America’s Hidden History.

And, this season is called “America’s Hidden Heroes.” The reason is, we highlight heroes from American history. For years we’ve been focusing on the forgotten history and heroes of the nation.

And now, we have a TV show just highlighting some of those heroes.

These are inspiring stories about some of the greatest people maybe you’ve never heard about. We go on location to the sites and show you where the events happened. It’s the stories of folks like Bronco Charlie, Stagecoach Mary, Jedediah Smith, Robert Smalls, and so many inspiring folks.

Now, this happens every Thursday night, and the time is gonna be different based on where you live. Either way, we think this is something that will so encourage and inspire you in learning some of these great stories from America’s Hidden History.

Rick:

Welcome back. Thanks for staying with us here on WallBuilders Live. We’re talking today about the safe spaces and snowflakes on campus, and the impact that’s going to have on the next generation.

Tim, you mentioned it’s going to cripple them instead of strengthening them and toughen them up.

They Can’t Afford To Pay Twice

David:

Well, Tim also mentioned that there is a growing trend of people taking their kids and moving them out of these spheres of education: whether it be for home school or for private school or charter school or Christian school.

One of the impediments really for that mobility, for a lot of parents, is they can’t afford to pay twice.

In other words, they are paying school taxes, and then on top of that, now we have to pay tuition to a private school or a Christian school or whatever. We can’t afford to pay for our kids twice because it’s just tough, making the budget work right now. It is tough making all the ends meet.

This Is Something To Pray For

This is a little side note, kind of footnote: this is something to pray for. There is a case at the U.S. Supreme Court this year that could seismically shift the ability of Christian schools to compete with public schools.

It goes back to something that happened in 1875, called the Blaine Amendment. James G. Blaine was a Speaker of Congress, and he proposed an amendment to the Constitution that would prohibit any kind of government money from going to specific denominations.

In other words, we’re not going to fund Catholic schools, so we’re going to fund Christian education but not Catholics. He didn’t want the money, just go into one denomination. It’s OK to do religious stuff but not one denomination version of it. That amendment did not pass in Congress, but 40 states picked it up and said, hey, that’s a good idea which they put that on a state constitution.

A Prohibition On All Religious Funding

Now over the years, the courts have reinterpreted that to move it from being a prohibition on sectarian funding, that has one the nomination, to be a prohibition on all religious funding. So, if you’re a religious school of any kind, you can’t get any competition in funding these tax dollars.

Well, that just cuts off competition. Because now we’re saying we will only fund secular public schools.

The Supreme Court of Montana

So what happened in Montana, the legislature the people said hey we pay tax dollars. We want to be able to choose where those tax dollars go in terms of education. Now if we want to send our kids to a private school, they could get a higher literacy rate and better reading better math and science we want to do that – we want the competition.

The Supreme Court of Montana struck that down. They said, no, we’ll get the Blaine Amendment. The Blaine Amendment requires us to discriminate against education that has religious principles.

Well, that is now at the U.S. Supreme Court. If the U.S. Supreme Court overturns the Blaine Amendment, or actually they’re not overturning the amendment, they’re overturning the court’s wrong interpretation of that amendment.

Public Funds To Be Used For All Education

If they do that in 40 states, you’re going to see the ability for public funds to be used for all education. We just want our kids to get a good education. We don’t care whether it’s a secular school or a Christian school or whatever – get a good education.

Parents, you best know what that is, so you choose where your kids want to go. If that happens, that will change the landscape of the secular, atheistic kind of monopoly that we have on education right now.

Tim:

Yeah, if all of a sudden, you can take the money that’s already being taken out of your wallet, the tax dollars, and you can choose where your child goes – that money follows your child.

If there’s a school is not doing good, and you say I’d rather them go to the school over here, especially if there’s a school is indoctrinating them and really attacking their heart, their soul, their mind. Then you can find a school that teaches something different. So this would be a huge decision which really could help shift the future of the nation.

Thanks For Listening To WallBuilders Live

Rick:

We are out of time for today, folks. Thanks so much for listening. Thanks to Dr. Everett Piper for joining us today.
