Faith and the Culture

Rick:
Welcome to the intersection of faith and the culture, it’s WallBuilders Live where we’re talking about today’s hottest topics on policy, faith and the culture. We only do that from a biblical, historical and constitutional perspective. Now what that means is that any issue of the day, whatever it might be, it might be something that the President did, it might be something that your own kid did or that you’re talking about with somebody at the water fountain, at work or something that’s being discussed at the church, whatever issue is impacting your life, your family, your property, your business, all of those things that happen to us on a daily basis. If we want to know the right answer to how to respond to that, we need to look at what the Bible says about it, what was the correct position on that thing from a biblical perspective. And then if it’s a policy issue, impacting our society around us, we got to look at a constitutional perspective, how does our particular constitutional republic work, how does our society work, what’s the right response and the right process for responding to that.
And then the reason we always look at a historical perspective, is because if we know what happened in history, if we can go back and look at, you know, nothing is new under the Sun, so if we can go back and look at how things have happened in the past, how people responded, then we can see what works well, what doesn’t work well, with the reason we know socialism, never ever works.

Biblical, Historical, and Constitutional Perspective

With the reason we know it’s so bad is because we can see that everywhere it’s ever been tried in any country in history, that it results in destruction. It destroys an economy. It destroys a people. It destroys values. And it always leads to tyranny in the end.
And so that’s why when you look in history, you can learn so much. So biblical, historical and constitutional perspective, that’s what we do here at WallBuilders Live. We are founded by David Barton, he’s America’s premier historian and I am a beneficiary of David Barton’s obedience to do what God called him to do. I’ve been listening to David since the early 90s with cassette tapes for those of you that remember what those were. And it became my university on wheels. He brought history to life for me. I’m so thankful for David’s teachings and what he’s done with WallBuilders.
Tim Barton is also with us here at WallBuilders. He is the president of WallBuilders. He’s a national speaker and pastor and has just done a phenomenal job at carrying that torch on with what David started so many years ago. And it’s my privilege, my name is Rick Green, I’m a former Texas Legislature and an America’s Constitution coach. Bible Reading in Schools

This is Tim Barton from WallBuilders with another moment from American history. In 1963, the United States Supreme Court decided that voluntary Bible reading could no longer be part of the school day. Founding father, Benjamin Rush known as the father of public schools under the Constitution pointedly warned that the Bible should be read in schools in preference to all other books.
He specifically warned that if America ever ceased promoting biblical principles in schools, then we would waste so much time and money and punishing crimes and take so little pains to prevent them. He was right. We now have 7 million Americans in prison on probation or on parole and the United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Sadly, this was unnecessary but is the result of no longer teaching the morals of the Bible in schools.

Welcome Scarlett Lani

Rick:
Welcome back to WallBuilders, thanks for staying with us today. Scarlett Lani is calling all the way from California where she’s been teaching hundreds of people on the Constitution, using WallBuilders Constitution Alive with David Barton, Rick Green. Scarlett, God bless you girl right there in California where people wouldn’t think you’d have a bunch of people coming out to study the Constitution.
Scarlett:
Yeah, who would have thought, but it”€™s been amazing.
Rick:
Well, you had a big class too. Now, you didn’t start with a big class. First time, you did Constitution Alive and had a group out to teach, you had what most people have, 10, 12, 15, I don’t remember how many you had in that class, how big was that one?
Scarlett:
That was probably around 25-30.
Rick:
Oh, well you started big then. Okay. Alright. So 25-30 in the first one?
Scarlett:
Yeah, people were hungry. So there were that many people.
Rick:
That’s good. That’s good. And then you did this one at Thousand Oaks Calvary Chapel out there, Godspeed Calvary Chapel and you had like 150 or 200 people in this thing?
Scarlett:
Sure, did. Yeah, it was pretty amazing. There was just something really amazing happening and people just really connected with your curriculum.
Rick:
What made you get started and want to be a Constitution coach and bring people together to study the Constitution? Have you been a Constitution, this is not good grammar I know, studier all your life?
Scarlett:
No. No. That’s actually the amazing part about it. Is that this just totally caught me off guard, it was not on my radar. I’ve always been a patriot. I always loved American history.

Constitution Coach Program

But I just happened to get this email from Patriot Academy, www.rickgreen.com where ever came from, it said that you’re starting a new program, a Constitution host program and just check this out on our webinar and something told me to do that and I did. I love what you all were doing.
And when I first looked at it, I just thought, well, I’m a pretty busy person, I”€™m a homeschooling mom, I’m involved in a lot of things. So I thought it’s nothing else, I’ll just sign up and just keep this to me and my family and we’ll just teach ourselves. But just kind of knowing the climate of everything that’s happening and just something told me that I needed to do a class and I tried to find every reason not to do it, to not make that commitment because I knew it would be a commitment on some level and you know it, and just something kept telling me you need to do it anyway. So I committed to doing it and picked a date and found a place and it was a blessing from every moment there on.
Rick:
I think when the most important things to highlight here, wasn’t, you know, you didn’t have a background in this, you hadn’t been doing this forever, I mean you literally responded to an email, jumped on the webinar with us and like you said, batted down every excuse you’d come up with not to do a class and then what you did it. I mean, were you surprised that so many people responded and wanted to be a part of it?

You Learn So Much

Scarlett:
You know, I was and other people were too. People thought I’d have five people there and yeah, so and again, the truth is my background was pretty sparse. Once I started learning from your program, I realized how much I did not know about history. And the beautiful thing is in order to do this class, I didn’t really have to teach anything because you and David Barton did all the teaching.
Rick:
So you weren’t intimidated by that. I mean, it was like, okay good, I just got get them in the room and hit play and let the videos do the teaching?
Scarlett:
Right. All anyone has to do is just trust and just be bold enough to say, I can say hello to people when they come in the room and I can press play on the video.
Rick:
Tell me about their response. I mean, I know a lot of people have thanked you for doing this, because you were the catalyst. I mean, you were the one that got them in the room and let him know this was available. So you know, you were the one that put it all together. I know, they’ve been thanking you for that. How does that feel to know that as a patriot and someone who loves the country and loves the Lord and wants these biblical values brought back to know that you impacted those lives, I mean those people learn things, felt better about the country, now are probably more active as citizens because you did this, how does that make you feel?

A Rewarding Experience

Scarlett:
If I had to put it into words, I would say that it just filled my heart with joy. I don’t know how else to express it. It just gives me joy to know that I’m a part of this. I’m a part of moving people. I’m a part of bringing truth to people and educating and empowering them and bringing them pride that they have so much. People already feel pride in the country, but when they really start learning on the back end what our Founders did and their faiths and the difficult values and principles and everything, they’re just filled with so much pride and it gives me joy to help instill that in people by bringing them the truth.
Rick:
I love that. I love that. I got to ask you if before this, you know, we often talk about how a lot of people in America have realized something is not right and they want to do something, they just don’t know what to do. Was that you in a way, I mean did you already kind of have something in your gut saying, man, I want to do something to help make things better but I just don’t know what to do, were you in that boat at all?
Scarlett:
Yeah, I was and because I used the excuse, say well, I’m a busy mom and what do I know? And I did want to do something and that’s why I just feel like this was so divine that you put the program out so that people who want to do something that don’t really feel that they’re equipped or that they have the tools or that they are well spoken enough can do it.

The Demand is Out There

Rick:
Welcome back to WallBuilders Live, thanks for staying with us. Scarlett Lani is still with us from California. She’s one of our Constitution coaches and has been doing this for a year now. Is that right, Scarlett, it’s been about a year, right, you’re in a month or two?
Scarlett:
So my first class was January 21st, 2019.
Rick:
So exactly, you’re right at a year marked then?

Scarlett:
Right, at a year. So this time, I was just getting it, lining it up to get ready to launch it.
Rick:
Now, you have definitely done some things that other people have now said they want to do. So you took our basic Constitution Coach program where we provide you with the DVDs, digital format of the videos or whatever and the workbooks and all that. And the more you did this and the more you went through it, you said, hey, I want to have more fun with this as well. And I have so enjoyed watching the videos and the pictures that you’ve posted in our Constitution Coach Facebook group of your kids getting up and reciting from the Declaration or some of the activities that you get even the people in the classroom to do. So you’ve turned this into a really fun class. What were you thinking when you started saying, hey what if we did this and what if we did that? Give us a little bit of that history because that’s really fun?

Fun for the Family

Scarlett:
Well, one of the reasons that I was hesitant to take on the classes because I figured it might take time away from my family. So the way my cure for that was to actually include them. So I had my kids learn quotes from the Founders and we’d get them up there and have them quoting them and then at the same time, I was teaching the rising generation and passing the torch on to them and so that aspect. And then we started including their friends and inviting them up and then parents are happy to give their children an opportunity to do public speaking and to learn civic. So we did it that way.
And then also just because of the type of personality I am, like whoever does the class, do it with your personality. My personality was I wanted this to be a founding era experience. So I set up a table that looks like the tables in Independence Hall with the green tablecloth and the brass candle and the feather quill and just want to and have a Declaration of Independence on parchment out. I just wanted have people feel and actually walk into the whole mood of what we were doing.
Rick:
Yeah, so like when you look at those pictures, when I looked at them in the Facebook group, that’s exactly what I was thinking, was wow, with that set up, it makes you feel like you’re walking back in time and you’re going to basically get to visit with the Founding Fathers tonight as you go into the classroom and that’s really what happens?

Rendezvous with Our Founding Fathers

Scarlett:
It is. And I told people come rendezvous with our Founding Fathers. I mean, what a great opportunity to really get to know them and spend some time with them and just really just be immersed so when they show for the class they were in.
Rick:
Love it. Love it. What had been some of the most, well I guess for you first and then I want to ask you about people that have come through the class with you, some of the things that surprised you most that you didn’t know and that I guess made you want to learn more, made you want to be more active?
Scarlett:
Well, one of the things was one of my older participants in my first class had said to me, you know, I feel cheated. I went to the public school system in the 50s and the 60s and I didn’t learn any of this. And he was so moved and actually so filled with joy. When I saw the joy that this class brought to him and others, it fueled me to want to do it more and to put it out to more people and to continue doing it. It really brings people joy and pride.
Rick:
How about the camaraderie, you know, I know I sense that with people when we’re doing a class and you know, you have these people that come together? It’s so much better than just doing the DVDs at home in my opinion, because you get to see you’re not alone and you get to make you know, new friends, a new contacts, have you seen that happening in your classes?

Unearthing Historic Truths

Scarlett:
Oh absolutely, everybody enjoys their time, chit chatting and comparing notes on what they didn’t know and what they just learned. And the bonding that happens there is something really special that happens in the shared love of country that we have and in discovering and unearthing all of these truths that most so many of them have been hidden from us. And so it’s really exciting and people just love to share that together.
Rick:
And you had people that went through your class then turn around and become a Constitution host or coach and start doing the classes themselves?
Scarlett:
I sure have. I’ve had people do them in their church, I mean we’ve had them do virtual classes and we even have someone doing them in a school. And so it’s not just in a church with adults we’re actually having it in the middle school and so it’s really neat to see and then someone else doing them in their home. So it’s whatever works for whoever, whatever your audience is whoever you can reach out to, it’s really neat to see and people from our last class are getting started too.

Become a Force Multiplier

Rick:
Talk about being a force multiplier. So not only have you taken this information and equipped those people, you know, came to your class and so you’ve multiplied yourself by, you know, 25 in that first class 150 or 200, whatever was in this other class, you multiplied yourself by that. But now, when some of them go out and start a class, I mean it just grows from there. That’s been a true force multiply the impact that you’re having, Scarlett, both there in California, but that’s nationally as well. Because as you said even these virtual classes with people from around the country in the class, but the impact that it’s having in your community, your state, your nation, just phenomenal. I’m so thankful for you.
Scarlett:
Yeah. And I will tell you two people are asking, when’s the next one? And they know people that want to come and they’ve invited people or people who heard about it before and couldn’t make that particular night. So there’s a demand for this.
Rick:

David and Rick do the Teaching

Rick:
We’re back here on WallBuilders Live, Scarlett Lani with us talking about being a Constitution coach and bringing people together to study the biblical foundations of our nation and then learn how to take action on those things as well. Scarlett, our final few minutes together, I got to ask you to address that person out there that’s listening to this and going, oh I want to do that, I want to do that, but and all those excuses come up, right the ones that you batted down when you were considering the same thing. Talk to that person for a moment and challenge them to do this. How do you get rid of those excuses if I don’t have time or I don’t have the experience or whatever it might be?
Scarlett:
Well, number one is you really don’t have to know anything, because we have the experts of Rick green and David Barton. So first of all, take the pressure off of yourself, you don’t have to be an expert. From my very first class, I just let everyone know I’m a patriot like you and I’m just learning alongside you, so we’re going to do this together. And you are looked at as the person because you’re in the front of the room and when somebody asks you a question that you don’t know, the great thing is you just say, I’m sorry I don’t know that, I will check and get back to you next week and then sometimes because of the camaraderie in the room, somebody else might know that answer and or look it up for you real quick.

Take a Leap of Faith

That”€™s one thing. So put aside the fact of whatever your background is, doesn’t matter. If you’re breathing and you can press play, you are good to go.
The other thing I wanted to say, is just I can tell you from my own personal experience that if you take a leap of faith on this, your efforts will be blessed. You will never regret. Any time that you put into this, it’s such a blessing and you’re going to make new friends and you’re going to have the joy of watching other new friendships be formed because of your class. And I did say if there was anything else was just to just to trust and just go for it. We’ve got, the whole recipe is there for you, you just got to stick it in the oven.
Rick:
I love it. I love it. I was thinking as you were saying that about, you know, somebody asks a question you don’t know and you said don’t worry, we have the experts, Rick Green and David Barton. Every class I’ve ever taught, someone has asked a question I didn’t know the answer too.

An Important Year

And you know, the fun in starting the class the way that you just described where you say I’m just a fellow citizen and a patriot learning with you is that when that hard question comes or question that’s just a subject you didn’t know about, you’re all in this together and it’s easy to say, you know what, I don’t know but let’s get the answer and then go find it. So I end up with a homework assignment every time I do a class and I’m fortunate to get to learn at the feet of David Barton and you know partner up with him and go get answers from him, but also other experts that we can tap into.
But you’re so right to just get rid of that fear. You don’t have to have the answers to all this stuff, we’re citizens learning together and I’m just so thankful you took the leap, Scarlett and have done this and for the last year, impacted so many lives. And man, I’m looking forward to 2020 and your classes this year and the classes that are going to spin off of that, the folks listening now that are going to be inspired by your story and your experience. What a wonderful blessing we have, really excited to lock shields with you and sharpen iron with you and see what’s going to happen in 2020.
Scarlett:
