Constitutional Defense of Your Family and Your Freedom, Part Two: I thought I was ready, I just knew that if the time ever came that I would need to step up and defend my family that I would. But I was wrong. When the moment came, I froze. I didn’t have the training, the confidence, or the skills needed to defend my family. And I never, ever, want to be in that situation unprepared again. In this episode, you will learn the importance and the true meaning of The Second Amendment as the Founders intended. This individual right is not just for hunting, it’s for protecting and defending our families. Two and a half million times a year a firearm is used to stop a crime, we can not be unprepared if the situation arises.

Pro-Family Legislators Conference

What we’re going to do today is actually pick up where we left off yesterday. Yesterday we started a presentation from where I had given a live presentation at the Pro-Family Legislators Conference in Dallas. It’s where we brought in all the state reps and state senators from around the nation. They come and spend the weekend together discussing hot topics and things that they’re dealing with in their states sharing ideas.

All kinds of powerful speakers that came in and shared with them and gave them tools for legislation that needed to be passed or things that were happening back in their home states.

It’s a great weekend and we encourage you to share that with your friends that are legislators or if you don’t know your legislator just send them a link, anyway.  Tell them, “€œHey, here’s a great weekend for you to go have a great time of fellowship with other legislators from across the nation and get some good ideas.”€

All of that can be found at– one more website for you.  I know today I’m overloading you with websites, but one more website, ProFamily.com. And that’s the legislators conference that we’re about to go to.

So we’re going to pick up right where we left off. We’re about halfway through a presentation I gave on the Second Amendment and on defending our families and our freedom. So if you missed yesterday the first part in this two part series, really easy, go to WallBuildersLive.com. It’s available right now under the archives at yesterday’s program. But we’re going to pick up where we left off.  We”€™ll finish it out today. Here we are at the Pro-Family Legislators conference talking about the Second Amendment.

Raising Righteous and Rowdy Girls

Rick:

I’m going to break one of the rules in public speaking here and certainly in using a PowerPoint. I’m going to give you a very extended quote, this is long so you’ve got to stay with me. But it’s so good I can’t just paraphrase. It comes out of Doug Giles “€œRaising Righteous and Rowdy Girls.”€

“€œIt’s clear from scripture that Jesus didn’t need weapons because he had at his disposal an angelic host that could flatten armies. I, unfortunately, don’t have that capability, nor can I walk through walls or split oceans. Christ had supernatural protection and his disciples carried swords.

I too, believe that God supernaturally protects me to some degree because I should have been dead a long time ago. However, should my guardian angel be napping or busy doing something else other than trying to keep up with me I’ll be okay,  because Smith and Wesson are with me.

Lastly, in Luke 22:36-38, Christ told his disciples even though he, personally, did not pack a weapon that they, in light of his departure, should get a deadly weapon. Namely, a sword.

Check it out, it says, “€˜And he (Jesus) said to them (his disciples), But now, whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and whoever has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one. 37 For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me,

And He was numbered with transgressors; for that which refers to Me has its fulfillment.”€™ 38 They said, “€˜Lord, look, here are two swords.”€™ And He said to them, “€˜It is enough.”€™

Jesus told them, he didn’t ask, or mildly suggest, but he told his buddies to sell their leather jacket if need be and buy a sword.   The sword which Christ told his compadres to purchase was not a QVC decorative claymore to hang on their walls to commemorate the good times that they had when Christ was around.

The original word used for “€˜sword”€™ in this text was a large knife used for killing animals and flesh. It was particularly fashioned for short deadly thrusts in hand-to-hand combat. Jesus didn’t tell them to carry a whistle, a shofar horn, or a bag of sand to blow in the bad guy”€™s eyes. That’s a psych reference for those that like psych. But a dagger like sword, a vicious nasty and deadly weapon not used for cutting vegetables, spreading butter, or splitting a bagel but for violently tapping along a heart in case of an attack.

Now, in a 21st century “€˜what would Jesus do context”€™ even though he didn’t personally carry a weapon, what do you think he thinks about his followers defending themselves with deadly force? Huh, pacifists?”€

Kids Are Being Wrongfully Listed As Terrorist And Kicked Out of School

Ok, I’m sorry for such a long monologue there from Doug Giles. But he says it right, doesn’t he? So, get that book Raising Righteous and Rowdy Daughters.  It”€™s great. But I think he makes the point. Clearly, if you want to do what Jesus did you got to go to the gospels and you gotta follow what he actually taught and what he actually said.

But today, because our worldview says that the gun is the problem.  Our hysteria in response to violent crazy criminals is to go after the gun. In fact, not only to go after actual guns.

I’ve lost count at the number of shows David, Tim, and I have done in the last few months on WallBuilders Live where we’ve interviewed an attorney, or a parent, or someone because their child has been suspended or kicked out of school or had their record actually listed as a terrorist or making terrorist threats for really awful things like chewing their Pop-Tart into the shape of a gun or pointing their finger like a gun. Or this particular girl because she talked about her bubble gun. Do you know what a bubble gun is? Folks, we have got off the deep end. We have gone so far overboard because our worldview is so backwards and so messed up.

Patriot Academy

Hey friends, this is Rick Green. You’re about to hear from some students at Patriot Academy this last summer from all over the country. I encourage you to visit PatriotAcademy.com.  Right on the homepage there a video is going to start playing, it”€™s just 60 seconds. You’re about to hear the audio from that video but you’re really going to want to watch the video and share it with your friends and family we are so excited about what God’s doing with the next generation.

Students:

“€œI have a destiny. Freedom isn’t just for politicians. It”€™s meant for each of us. To play a role, to be significant, and to live with purpose. My life meaning, I have a destiny. Who am I?  Does it matter? I was given one life. If not us, then who? If not now, then when? Let”€™s change the world.  People say you can’t change the world because you’re young or inexperienced. Because you aren’t ready. But I’m training every single day and I have a voice. I would give this life and everything I”€™ve got because I am a champion. We all have one life to give. I am a patriot and I have a destiny.”€

Rick:

We’re training up a generation of champions to change the world. Hope that you will help us and that you’ll spread the word let others know about it. Visit today PatriotAcademy.com.

The Palladium Of The Liberties Of A Republic

Rick:

Let’s get back to basics and find out what these guys said the Second Amendment was all about, and what the worldview was in their minds when they wrote the Second Amendment, and what is the real basis and the original intent.

Joseph Story, father of American jurisprudence said, “€œThe right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered as the Palladium of the liberties of a republic. Since it offers a strong moral check against the usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers and will enable the people to triumph over them.”€

Doesn’t sound like that has anything to do with hunting or pheasants, does it? It has everything to do with making sure we can keep a tyrannical government at bay or we can prevent our government from ever becoming tyrannical.

But listen to this warning from Justice Story, “€œThere is certainly no small danger that indifference may lead to disgust, and disgust to contempt, and thus gradually undermine all the protection intended by this clause of our national Bill of Rights.

That’s what has happened. You see, we’ve had an indifference to the Second Amendment as fewer and fewer people were raised in families where they were taught the proper use of a firearm and the proper purpose of a firearm. And so now you have millions of people out there that are indifferent to the Second Amendment. They don’t have an opinion on it and then they get the line from Clinton and Gore and then the liberal media and all these others about the danger of guns and that the gun is the problem and it leads to disgust, disgust to contempt, and that’s why they are gradually undermining the protection intended by this particular clause.

What Do Our Founders Say About Guns?

So, what we can do is help prevent that indifference and that disgust by helping to put the gun ownership in the proper context and the proper meaning for the people in our individual states.

George Mason, father the Bill of Rights said, “€œForty years ago when the resolution of enslaving America was formed in Great Britain the British Parliament was advised to disarm the people, that it was the best and most effectual way to enslave them. But that they should not do it openly, but to weaken them and let them sink gradually.”€ That’s the same effort being made now.

Sam Adams, father of the American Revolution, “€œThe Constitution should be never construed to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms.”€

Patrick Henry, “€œThe great object is that every man be armed, everyone who is able may have a gun.”€

George Washington, “€œA free people ought to be armed.”€

James Madison, father of the Constitution, “€œThe advantage of being armed is an advantage which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation. In the several kingdoms of Europe the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms.

John Adams— we can do this all day, by the way—because virtually every Founding Father had something positive to say about gun ownership. “€œResistance to sudden violence for the preservation of not only of my person, my limbs, and life, but of my property.”€

So, here we’re not just talking about resistance to a tyrannical government, but resistance to sudden violence from an individual. “€œMy property is an indisputable right of nature which I never surrendered to the public by the compact of society in which perhaps I could not surrender if I would.”€

Meaning, because I’ve decided to live in a society, because I’m a member and a citizen of this culture, and agree with a constitutional republic and this form of government doesn’t mean that in any way I could hand over my right to protect myself and protect my family. The maxims of the law and the precepts of Christianity are precisely coincident in relation to this subject.

So here we’re getting into their worldview. Why did they think you had a right, an inalienable right, to protect yourself and your family? Because of their Christian worldview of the right of the individual to do that.

Alexander Hamilton, “€œThe Supreme Being gave existence to man. Together with the means of preserving that existence he invested man with an inviolable right to personal liberty and personal safety.”€ So those things are given to you by God and He gives you the means to protect and preserve them.

James Wilson signed both our founding documents and served on the Supreme Court an original appointee of Washington, “€œThe great natural law of self-preservation cannot be repealed, or superseded, or suspended by any human institution. The right of the citizens to bear arms in the defense of themselves shall not be questioned.”€

Now, here’s where the duty and responsibility ultimately lies when it comes to criminal violence. “€œEvery man’s house is deemed by the law to be his castle. And the law invests in him with the power and places on him the duty of the commanding officer of his house. Every man”€™s house is his castle and if anyone be robbed in it, it shall be esteemed his own default and negligence.”€

So we know we can’t have a police officer in every home or on every street. And so their worldviews said, “€œIt’s your responsibility.  It’s my responsibility first and foremost to protect ourselves and our families.”€

Too often we allow the mantra out there to lead us to believe the government is going to protect us and that government is going to take care of us. You are probably the best voices possible in your individual states to teach people the truth of the right of self-defense. The Biblical foundation of it, the constitutional foundation, what the Founders actually taught, what they said about using these quotes in your speeches, and talking about this back home so that we can get away from this indifference that is leading to disgust.

The Security Of A Free State

Rick:

I”€™m going to get a little bit help here. I”€™m going to get one of my sons to come up. Will y”€™all welcome Reagan Green? Yes, he”€™s named after the president, of course. Come on up bud. Reagan is going to share one of the Founder”€™s quotes and teach a little on the Second Amendment here. Go for it.

Reagan:

Richard Henry Lee was the Founding Father in the Continental Congress who actually made the motion for America’s independence on June 7th 1776. Now, Lee once said that to preserve liberty it is essential that the whole body of all people possess arms and be taught how to use them, especially when young. And this might explain why John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States was out with the Massachusetts Minutemen doing musket drills when he was only 8 years old.

The Founding Fathers said that the Second Amendment is the one that protects all of our other freedoms. It says, “€œA well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”€

At that time the militia was every man that could fire a rifle. So this freedom, it wasn’t for the official military, it was for we the people. And that’s why it says, “€œThe right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”€

Now, even if you guys don’t like hunting or guns as much as our family you would be wise to help protect the rights of other families like ours so that we can keep our guns. Just in case some day we’re going to need to use those guns to help protect your rights. Please welcome back, my dad.

Learn To Defend Your Family

Rick:

So my fourth child, he was born on Ronald Reagan’s birthday and we used to have a dog named Dutch so if that tells you anything about our naming in our family. Thank you Reagan.

So Reagan is going to be holding some handgun classes right outside in the hallway after this is over, not really. But teaching them while they’re young is so important. I want to challenge you and encourage you to do that with your children and your grandchildren. It”€™s one of the reasons we’ve been training around our house.

We’ve been going out to Front Sight and we’ve been teaching our kids how to defend themselves, and defend their family, and have that proper use of firearms. We’ve actually got a DVD set back there that we want to share with you this week called, “€œConstitutional Defense of Your Family and Freedom.”€

It’s got the talk on the Second Amendment a lot longer than what we did today. And then also follows our family go into a handgun class and you get to learn a lot of things on that as well and begin to defend your family.

Now, I had a couple of people ask me about our Constitution class. We actually redid the class that we made available to you last year. We went and shot it at Independence Hall. In fact, David suggested, “€œYou need to go record that in Independence Hall—Oh, they will never let me do that.”€

“€œNo, you really need to go do that just on making the phone calls.”€ And they let us do it.

We actually got to record the class in Independence Hall. And I know as you study the Second Amendment and you study different areas of the Constitution you don’t have time to go spend three years in law school or go become “€œa constitutional scholar”€ and all those things.

I want you to approach your study of the Constitution the same way you approach buying a new television. And you’re wondering how this connects, right? Ok, so when you buy a brand new big screen TV and it comes with that big thick user’s manual.  What do you do with that manual? Throw it away, right? We all throw it away. What are we looking for? We’re looking for that nice full color fold out with pictures glossy quickstart guide, right?

All we care about is how to put this thing in. How do we get the system working again? I just want to watch the game  Kind of like Glenn Beck, “€œI just want to watch his show.”€

So that’s what we did when we went out to Independence Hall. We recorded a Quickstart Guide to the Constitution. That’s what our class does.

We challenge you to study and then we want you to share it with your folks back home in your district getting them to study where we came from as a nation. I also want to challenge you to learn how to defend yourself and your family.

Could You Protect Your Family If The Need Arises

I had a concealed weapons permit for 10 years and never carried because I was not confident in being able to carry that weapon. I was always worried about what would happen, “€œAre the kids getting it?”€ Or, “€œI’m not sure I would use it when I needed to use it.”€

And I went out to a handgun training and they took us through a simulation. And when I went to that simulation I’ll tell you, I’m a Type A person, alright? I’ve always said, “€œI’ll step up, I’ll take care of the problem. Don’t worry, if there’s evil there I’m going to be willing to fight.”€

And I went through the simulation and I ended up in a situation with a lot of pressure and very intense and I froze and it made me realize that without the proper training I am not ready to step up. And I pray that the 1.2 million violent crimes in America every year that none of those happened to any of you or your family.

But after going through that class and being in that simulation I realized, “€œI’m not ready, I want to be ready, and I never want to feel like that again.”€ And I wasn’t ready when evil came knocking at my door.

And so that was about a year ago and my family and I’ve really gone on a journey to make sure that we’re prepared. We’ve done a lot of training over the last year. I know now that I’m ready if evil comes knocking on my door.

I want you to have that same confidence as well. So I encourage you to find some people in your community, do things even in your campaign, put on events with folks where they come in do- I’ve got a friend who runs the Delaware Family Policy council in Delaware.  She just did a tea and targets for ladies in her area to come in and get some handgun training. Drink tea and have some fellowship but go and learn how to shoot and defend themselves.

Pastors Only Briefing Trip

Tim:

Hi, this is Tim Barton with WallBuilders and I want to encourage all the pastors out there with a unique opportunity that we’re presenting it WallBuilders. We’re doing a special tour just for pastors that you can come and learn more about the spiritual heritage of our nation. Not just seeing the sights but understanding the significance of what they are and what they represent.

We get to go to the Capitol at night.  And we get to see the spiritual heritage of our Founding Fathers, of who we are as a nation, where we came from. We bring in congressman that will tell you about current legislation, about our religious liberties  and freedom, and what’s going on in Washington, D.C.

If you’re a pastor or if you want to recommend your pastor for this trip, you can go to our website at www.WallBuilders.com. And there’s a link that’s for scheduling.  If you click on that link there’s a section for pastor”€™s briefing. There’s more information about the dates, when it’s going, and how it’s going to happen. If you want to know more about our nation, our religious liberties, our freedom, our spiritual heritage, this is a trip you want to be a part of.

God, Guns, And Giving

Rick:

I want to close by bringing you back to Joseph Story.  Don’t forget this quote, “€œThere is certainly no small danger that indifference may lead to disgust, and disgust to contempt, and thus gradually undermine all the protection intended by this clause, our Second Amendment.”€

In the Bill of Rights, it”€™s our responsibility, we the people, to defend these things and make sure that we can pass them on to our young people. So I encourage you to do that.  Study the Constitution.  Study certainly the Second Amendment, and begin to learn how to defend yourself and your family.

So, any questions? I mean, I don’t know if you would talk about Second Amendment or other areas of the Constitution but maybe David”€™s got a few comments to make.

Here we go, ya”€™ll.  Welcome. David Barton.  Get”€™s me off the hook.

David:

I”€™ve got a Q&A recommendation. Glenn, I was just doing an event with Glenn Beck, we did a fundraiser for his charity. He ran about $14 million last year to through that charity and 100% goes to Target so we put two million in Oklahoma, and the guys up in South Dakota, etc. And so we were doing a fundraiser and we called it God, Guns, and Giving. And he used some of those quotes that Rick just used about teaching young people how to handle guns.

Thomas Jefferson, his 15 year old nephew when he adopted him said, “€œLook, you need to exercise a lot and you don’t need to do things like football because it’s way too violent. You need to do guns because it’s a whole lot better for you, it actually involves-“€ So I find it interesting he said, “€œDon’t don’t do those hard hitting athletic sports.”€

But Jefferson did the same thing John Quincy Adams did, when he’s 8 years old had his musket out doing the musket drills in Massachusetts. And one of the things I showed in that particular setting was me more than 50 years ago, a picture of me when I was 7-8 years old whatever it was.

And then I held up a gun and it was the first gun that I had. It was a Ithaca model 49 lever action rifle. And I pointed out that I won that gun at a church contest. And the church gave me that because I memorized more Bible verses and brought more people to church. When’s the last time a church has done something like that?

The Biblical Right Of Self-defense

And so I mean, quite frankly, Tim Barton was a youth director for a number of years and we did that at church. I would sponsor and I would give guns and a safety course to kids who memorize the most Bible verses or whatever the youth director wanted to do.

So you might think about doing that, you can buy guns fairly cheap but it’s a fun thing to do at the church, you know? Get a youth director or somebody and say, “€œHey, you get a gun safety course and a gun if you whatever the competition might want to be.”€

The thing about thinking that guns is outside the perimeter of the Bible is nuts because whether you go from Exodus 22- and by the way, the castle doctrine that Rick mentioned up there, the castle doctrine from James Wilson. It comes out of Exodus 22:2.

And so you go through all the verses in the Bible that deal with the right of self-defense, there is a number Nemiah and in Luke as well. And that’s why the Founding Fathers called it the Biblical right of self-defense. It wasn’t just a Second Amendment right of self-defense, it was also a Biblical right of self-defense.

Again, as I mentioned last night, we’ve separated the Bible from so many areas but just think outside the box. I mean, just encourage people as a spiritual reward. Let them have a gun and a gun safety course and do things like that. Or I like the idea of Tea and Targets. I’d probably shoot the cup I drink after the tea, after I get done with the tea throw it up in the air and see if I can shoot it, no I won’t go there.

Defending Your Whole Family

Rick:

Well, that’s a conclusion of our talk on constitutional defense of your family and your freedom I hope you enjoyed that. For more information you can go to RickGreen.com. And that presentation is available on DVD. It”€™s actually in a package with a class that we did with one of the best instructors in the country Steve Campbell and his wife.

They actually came out to Texas and we had had a wonderful time with film learning handgun defense. My whole family in the videos are actually following my 10 year old, my my 12 year old, my 14 year old, and my 17 year old, and my wife and I in a handgun class.

And so you can actually experience that on the DVDs there and then it also has another presentation. So for more information on all of that if you want to learn more about that just visit RickGreen.com  and you can learn more about our handgun classes and also about this talk on the Second Amendment.

Most importantly I hope that you have learned today and yesterday in this two part series and if you tuned in middle of program and missed yesterday you can go to our website right now and get our program from yesterday and today and share with your friends and family it’s right there at WallBuildersLive.com. And just click on the archive section.

But most importantly, I hope that in this program that you have learned something about a constitutional principle, the Second Amendment, but also that you have been challenged and inspired to do your part in protecting yourself your family and your freedom and that means get educated on this but also beginning to take action, getting trained, and being ready and able to defend those people that you love. Thanks so much for listening today. You’ve been listening to WallBuilders Live!
