Faith and the Culture

You find your way to the intersection of faith and the culture. This is WallBuilders Live with David Barton, Tim Barton and Rick Green. Thanks for joining us.

I’m Rick. I’m a former Texas legislator. Don’t hold that against me now. I’m a recovering politician. I go to a Tuesday night meeting every week, get up, say hi, I’m Rick, recovering politician, five years clean off the ballot. Now that’s cynical. I know. I’m sorry. We shouldn’t be so cynical. But we don’t want politicians. We want patriots. That’s what we work on here at WallBuilders Live.

We’re training up a new generation of all ages, not just the next generation, the young people, but you that are listening, whatever your age is, from 8-80 or 90, you still have a role to play in saving this constitutional republic and restoring these liberties. And so you may be a future state representative, and then you won’t hold it against me for being a former state representative.

Anyway, we joke about it. But seriously, we want more politicians to be patriots, right? We want people in public office. I don’t even like calling them politicians. I think we should say elected representatives. They’re not some high and mighty position. They’re literally the servants of the people. They’re serving the people. So public servants maybe would be a good thing to call them.

Anyway, maybe God’s going to put that on your heart. Who knows? But that’s part of what we do here, is we talk about what it looks like to have a biblical leader serving at the school board or the city council or state legislature or Congress or president or whatever it might be. We talked about the Exodus 18:21 requirement for that leader. Are they able? Do they fear God? Do they hate covetousness? Are they honest? Those are the things that we’re looking for and we know you are as well.

The Condition of Our Military

So anyway, Rick Green, former Texas legislator and America’s constitution coach. And I’m here with Tim Barton. He’s our president here at WallBuilders. He’s a national speaker and pastor. You ought to get him in to speak by the way. Check him out at If you haven’t had him speak at your church or organization, you should. Powerful, powerful stuff.

Alright, Tim, we’ve got General Boykin back with us later in the program, of course, great friend of the program and to our legislators’ conference, always a hit when he comes and shares and just a great warrior as well. But man, speaking of warriors, I mean, our military situation right now, just in terms of recruiting–

I mean, all these stories we’re seeing now where they’re like thousands of recruits shy, and having trouble finding good applicants. That’s the part that surprised me. I thought it was just people didn’t want to join right now because of all the weakness and everything. But apparently, the pool itself is pretty weak in America for the types of people you want in the military.

Yeah, it’s really interesting seeing some of the information coming out. I mean, to your point, initially, when we’re looking at the condition of America right now, between 70-75% of Americans are currently saying America is heading in the wrong direction, right, you would just assume there’s probably not a lot of people wanting to sign up for a military for a nation that’s going the wrong direction.

So already, the assumption would be, they’re going to have a hard time getting the quota they need to have the kind of military we need to keep America safe. But then on top of it, when you look at how Americans don’t meet some basic physical fitness requirements that is necessary for the military and some of the surrounding issues, it’s really pretty sad and staggering how few Americans are actually in a place that they could be physically or mentally ready to be part of the military if the time came.

It’s Interesting…

It’s just an interesting thing looking in America, and certainly, as Christians, we’re praying God, please give us mercy, give us grace. And at the same time, God bring justice, remove some of these wicked and evil leaders.

As we have seen conversation about Roe v. Wade with the thought from the Dobbs decision coming up in the Supreme Court that there could be the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

And so you had states going all kinds of crazy directions where some states now are saying they’re going to expand abortion to be passed birth, which is seems like a weird medical phenomenon that abortion is before a child is born.

So how do you kill the child after they’re born when they’re pre-born, like those words don’t line up? But you have states that are saying for 28 or 30 days after birth, you can still do that. You’ve had some major businesses and corporation, everything from Tesla to Amazon from these big organizations saying they’re going to actually pay to fly employees to go to some of these abortion friendly states to get abortions in those states and it’s going to be part of the health care coverage they offer their employees in the midst of people choosing things that are so evil. At the same time, we’re praying that God brings justice and that God would shut down this evil and bring deliverance.

And so obviously, our nation is in turmoil, but with the inner chaos and turmoil, and then considering where things are over in Europe, when we see the instability of the rest of the world, and as we would pointed out many times in this program, it’s not a surprise that when you remove biblical morality, that you have issues of instability, right? It’s not a surprise that as the world has become more secular, specifically when you look over some of these European nations, as the world has become more secular, it’s not surprising there’s greater levels of instability.

However, that certainly can have a major impact on America when you have Vladimir Putin, a seemingly crazy guy over in Russia, who’s talking about nuclear weapons being a very legit possibility, and some of what they’re doing with warheads. And where does that put America? This is a very significant conversation about the military readiness of America and how do we restore some of our military back to be strong to be ready again? Definitely some issues.

A Shrinking Pool

Yeah, Tim, it’s always been a small percentage that willing to serve, and it’s always been, 1%, 2%, 3% at the most that’s been willing to put their lives on the line in this way, and go and serve in the military. And so that’s still been enough though, that the military has been able to pick and choose and have high standards and go for it most of the time, best of the best unless you’re in a all-out war and need a draft and it’s a World War II situation or Vietnam situation. But most of the time, when we’re not in those situations, we’ve had enough that were willing to volunteer and out of that pool have some cream of the crop that you can choose.

But man, that is rapidly changing, both in terms of the pool shrinking because I know a lot of people out there that have said I was going to go military, but now with all this crazy stuff they’re doing I’m not going to. And then out of the ones that are willing to go, I mean, wow, they’re getting, unfortunately, sometimes scraping out of the bottom of the barrel and having to lower their standards.

So you nailed it. I mean, in the terms of the global situation, in terms of where America is, this is a critical, critical issue and we’ve got a good friend in General Jerry Boykin who a lifetime of service and not just on the ground dealing in those situations but also at a high level.

What do you do long term to have a good Special Forces? What do you do long term to have a good overall military? So great mind, if you will, for us to bring in on the conversation.

We’re going to take a quick break, when we come back, General Jerry Boykin, he’s now serving over at Family Research Council, a great organization out of DC that’s basically lobbying for the family and for biblical values. And he brings great perspective to them as well, but also a frequent guest on our program. Stay with us, we’ll be right back with General Jerry Boykin.

Hey, guys, this is Tim Barton, I am interrupting the normal broadcast to bring you something pretty special. This summer, we are doing a special program for college aged students 18-25 year olds. And it’s something that is becoming more and more special based on where the climate is.

In the middle of a crazy culture, in the middle of a nation going in crazy directions and right now we’re seeing in academia where even Christian universities are promoting critical race theory, teaching the 1619 project, we want to do something to help equip young people the next generation, to know the truth, the truth of the Word of God–

The truth of America, the truth of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the free market, we want to get into a lot of this. And this is something that if you are an 18-25 year old, or if you are a parent or grandparent, if you have an 18 or 25 year old, if you’re in church, you know 18-25 year olds, this program is something that can be life-changing for them, you want them to be a part. Go to and look for the summer institute to be part of this program.

This is Tim Barton from WallBuilders with another moment from American History. Too often today history education excludes great black heroes from the American founding, such as Lemuel Haynes. Haynes, abandoned as a baby, pioneered churches across upper New England. He became the first black American to pastor a white congregation, to receive an honorary master’s degree, and to be ordained by a mainstream Christian denomination, the Congregationalists. He was a soldier during the American Revolution.

And in his churches on George Washington’s Birthday, he regularly preached sermons honoring George Washington. Even late in his life, he expressed his willingness to go back to battle if necessary to protect America, which he called a Sacred Ark. American history is filled with numerous examples of black heroes who are largely ignored by mainstream education today.

Welcome General Jerry Boykin

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live. Thanks for staying with us. Good to have back our good friend retired General Jerry Boykin. General, always good to have you sir. Thanks for coming on the program today.

Well, it’s great being on with you. Thanks, Rick.

I wish we could do good news with you more often. Too often I’m calling you and saying what the world’s going on over here? General, help me get some perspective. And kind of that way today, man, we’re seeing this difficult, difficult recruiting for the military right now, not just because of all the crazy things the military has been doing, but because the pool of applicants apparently is making it very difficult to find qualified people. What are you seeing? And are you concerned about it?

I’m very concerned about it. And you’re right. I mean, all of the focus and emphasis has been placed on CRT and all of the other woke programs that contribute absolutely nothing to military readiness. It is discouraging young men and women who just want to serve their nation, and I think that is reflecting in the way that they’re reluctant to go to a recruiting station and to enlist or to join ROTC so they can be commissioned.

The Real Problem

But you’re absolutely right. We got a lot of fat people. I mean, a lot of young fat people and young drug abusers. And we got a lot of people that for various reasons just simply disqualify themselves before they ever get to a recruiting station. That is a real problem because they just can’t meet the entry standards.

Yeah, and I wondered how much of that, and I may not be reading the story correctly, but it’s like one out of four that qualify now. And I’m assuming that number is one out of four that are actually applying, which means if we’ve already self-selected out the ones we really wanted in the first place, but they’re going I don’t want to go into this woke CRT-driven you got to get a job, all the stuff that’s happened. Are we already self-selecting out the best ones and that’s part of what’s making it so much harder to find good people?

Well, I think what that one out of four is one out of four people in the category, that age bracket that makes him eligible.

So it’s not just the ones that are applying, and it’s just general population and that for the general population in this category that you’d normally recruit from has gotten a lot tougher to find qualified applicants. Indeed, it has and that is a national emergency as far as I am concerned. Now, this has been coming on for quite some time. But one out of four, you just stop and think about the fact that if, in fact, we did have to execute a selective service draft that we would have a rough time fill in the ranks of an expanding army like we had in World War II and other periods of time in American history.

So, it’s a sad thing. And for me, it’s very concerning because I know how important a ready military really is. And right now, it is tough to say that our future is bright.

Historic Trends

It’s a symptom of a decaying culture, for sure. And even from a practical perspective now, even without needing selective service, I mean, what does this do to the standard? Are they just going to lower the standards to meet the quotas? Or will they try to go with fewer recruits? What do you think they how do they respond to this?

Well, I think that the trend has always been to lower the standards, lower the entry standards, for example. But you also find them lowering the physical standards and so forth. But just lowering the entry standards, you know, if you go back to the Vietnam era when we had a draft, we were taking people that had not graduated from high school.

And that is we don’t want to go there again. We just don’t want to go there again. Why?

It’s not about their education so much as this is the fact that by graduating from high school, it shows that they have the stick to ”itiveness” that really is essential to win in battles, win in wars. And that has been the historic trend is to just start lowering the entry standards and had just to get more people in. I hope we don’t do that.

This might seem off the wall question. But if you had a group of parents sitting in front of you, what would you tell them about this and how would you challenge them and what steps could you give them to say make sure your kids fits into that one out of four that would qualify, whether they go to the military or not, you just want them to be a healthy productive member of society.

What Should We Say About Joining the Military?

Yeah. Thanks for that question, because I encountered this all over the country, moms and dads, that I have teenagers that want to join the military. And I tell you it is becoming more and more difficult for me to, to give them the advice that they are searching for.

But here’s basically what I say to him. You need to understand that this is the frontline of defense for American values is really our military. And if we ever get to the point where we don’t have people of faith in the military, all we have is a bunch of mercenaries.

So it is more difficult now to live your faith in the military than it has been. But at the same time, they are still essential to the fiber of our military, just like they are the fiber of our society as a whole. And the final thing I say is you’ll never regret serving your country. But I will tell you that I am like most Americans, like these moms and dads, I’m concerned about what I see happening in our military with all of the social experiments that are going on to contribute nothing to readiness.

Yeah. Well, I mean, it’d be it begins in our homes. We’ve got to raise kids that the military would want, the businesses would want, that we’d all want to hire. And the more we can do that, the better chance we got at turning this thing around. Thanks for what you guys are doing over Family Research Council, brother, you all keep up the great work. Thank you for your time today, General, and let’s do it again soon.

Well, I thank you very much for that. And I appreciate all that you guys are doing as well.

That’s General Jerry Boykin. Folks, stay with us, we’ll be right back with Tim Barton.

Hey, guys, we want to let you know about a new resource we have here at WallBuilders called The American Story. For years, people have been asking us to do a history book, and we finally done it. We start with Christopher Columbus and go roughly through Abraham Lincoln. And one of the things that so often we hear today are about the imperfections of America, or how so many people in America that used to be celebrated or honored really aren’t good or honorable people.

One of the things we acknowledge quickly in the book is that the entire world is full of people who are sinful and need a savior, because the Bible even tells us that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. And yet what we see through history, and certainly is evident in America is how a perfect God uses imperfect people and does great things through them.

The story of America is not the story of perfect people. But you see time and time again how God got involved in the process and use these imperfect people to do great things that impacted the entire world from America. To find out more, go to and check out The American Story.

It Takes Time

We’re back here on WallBuilders Live. Thanks for staying with us. Thanks to General Jerry Boykin for joining us. You can find him at, that’s for Family Research Council. Back with Tim Barton now. And Tim, of course, you can hear it in the General’s voice. I mean, he sounds a little down about this because he recognizes what this means for military readiness for years to come.

Because it’s not like you just overnight turn on the faucet and have a ready military good to go, I mean, years of training, people in the queue, kind of the farm team coming in. I mean, he sees all of that. And so he knows this is not just an immediate problem. This is a problem for years into the future.

Yeah. And one of the things that, unfortunately, for the military, you can go back to President Obama and see some significant changes that were made. And since the Obama era, the US military has been much less friendly toward religious values toward Christians, it’s been much more embracing of a wokest ideology.

And now, as General Boykin pointed out, they’re doing so much to promote this leftist woke agenda that has nothing to do with military readiness. So one of the first moves the Biden administration makes when they come into office is they identify, hey, we have new uniforms for Marines. It’s for pregnant women so they can be a part of the Marines. And obviously, we are a profamily organization. We want there to be more families.

The Family

We want moms and dads and we want babies. We want that to be a reality in America. We know that strong families make strong communities, make strong statements, strong nations, etc. We’re totally profamily. But yet again, you’re seeking to make moves that have nothing to do with military readiness.

And now we are at the forefront of some very unique, dangerous places in American but also in world history. And even though we still have some very significant advantages and areas when it comes to warfare and military, we are quickly getting to a place that we are going to lose the vast majority of the advantage we’ve had.

And one of the things that has been such a great strength for America as we’ve been able to have peace through strength. Because we have these big military muscles we can flex, it would make other nations have to reevaluate, do they really want to mess with America? Because we’re really good at what we do. But since President Obama, one of the things they’ve worked actively to do, actually, General Jerry Boykin is one of the casualties of some of the war in the military of people saying, you know what, we don’t really want that certain Christian conservative kind of guy in the military, we want much more of a focus ideology.

And what is proven to be kind of fundamentally true is that Leftist destroyed pretty much everything they touch, and right now they have their hands all over the military. And unfortunately, it looks like they are rapidly destroying the military as well.

Well, friends, in all of these things, there’s something you can do. I know sometimes we talk about a topic like this, the military, I mean, that feels out of reach, right? You look, what decision can you make or what can I make with regard to the standards or with the overall culture in the recruiting pool and the lack of talent and frankly strong individuals that you would want to recruit for these kinds of things? What can you do about it?

Well, it’s just like in the book of Nehemiah, folks. It’s what we can do right there in our backyard, the wall that’s right next to our home, that’s where we’re responsible. We’re not responsible for the whole picture. We’re not responsible for the entire nation. We’re responsible for what’s happening right there in our communities. And you can be the catalyst in your community for restoring biblical values, for bringing back constitutional jurisdictions. All of those things are at our fingertips.

Who is Caesar?

We have a say. We have a voice. We are Caesar in this country, we the people. So if we’re going to render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s in America, unlike the Roman Empire back then when Jesus said that, that means that we the people are in charge. So if we’re going to render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, we have to do Caesar well, we have to play that role as our citizenship requires of us, not just the rights to be free, but the responsibilities that come with that.

So we challenge you to do even more than you’ve done in the past. All of us need to step up and do even more. All of us need to give more of our lives, fortunes, and sacred honor. And we challenge you to pray about that, what’s God calling you to do and then take action. Look for ways to get involved and be a part of the solution right there in your community.

Of course, we recommend you become one of our Constitution coaches that you teach a biblical citizenship class at your church or a constitutional defense course at your local gun club, arrange a constitutional live class right there in your living room. There’s so many options.

Now we’ve teamed up with Kirk Cameron, we’ve got this American Camp Fire revival, another great opportunity for you to bring people together. It’s a wonderful course with Kirk and Marshall Foster. There’s just so many options, there’s so many ways you can make a difference. No one can say I want to do something, but I don’t know what to do. If that’s you, we know what to do and we will come alongside you.

So check all that out today at and Get engaged, get plugged in, we’ll come alongside you and help you make a difference in your community.

Alright, friends, before I close out today, just a little bit of a personal note if I could share with you that I think will bless you as well, especially if you have young people in your life in that age range of 17, 18, 19,20 years old, I just went this last weekend to the graduation of two of my kids, my youngest son Rhett and my daughter, Cameron, 19 and 21, they just went through the Applied Life Leaders Academy.

CM Church in Hot Springs, AR

Now you’ve heard us talk a lot about high point which is what I nicknamed the Patriot Academy in the woods, which is a great leadership training for high school students that takes place at CM Church in Hot Springs, Arkansas, where they also have a one year program or gap year program, it’s actually about nine months. And three of my children have gone through it.

My son Regan went through three years ago life changing powerful experience for him. And this weekend, as I was sitting in the graduation for Rhett and Cameron and listening to the stories, both of my kids and of the other kids that were graduating, I was overwhelmed. I mean, in tears overwhelmed, at what God had done in their lives in that nine months. There is something special about what happens at Leaders Academy. And I just want to encourage you to check it out. Just go check out the church, check out High Point Brookhill.

But especially right now, get ready for this coming fall, Applied Life Leaders Academy. And if you have a young person in your life, 18 to, I think they’ll take up to 22 or so, for that nine month program, that maybe is kind of in that position where you know, I’m not sure I want to go to college. I may want to go to college but I’d like to have nine months of really good grounding and biblical worldview and life skills and relationship skills, communication skills. It’s really remarkable what they do at Leaders Academy.

And I’m just telling you from a personal observing in my own family, I am so thankful for them and so thankful for what they do with young people, the dedication of Tim and Terry Brooks and of Paul and Angela Curran and just their whole team there. I’m just really, really thankful for him. And I want to encourage you if you’re looking for something for your young person at that time in their life, it is an empowering, empowering nine months.

The State Of Our Military – With Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Jerry Boykin

So, CM church is the place to check out, it’s called Christian Ministries church. Of course, you’ve heard Tim Brooks here on the program, many, many times if you’re a longtime listener to WallBuilders Live and of course, Tim is actually the speaker at our dinners for the Legislators’ conference that we have every year as well. And so he’s a great friend to WallBuilders and a great friend to our Patriot Academy and all the different programs that we do.

And I just had to share that with you today because of overwhelmed by what happened last weekend in watching those kids and just the life-changing that takes place over that nine months. So be sure to check it out at and that it will be a blessing to you and your family as your young people get a chance to just get empowering, empowering skills for whatever they’re going to do.

You know, it doesn’t matter if they’re going to go into politics or business or entertainment or the ministry, they have all kinds of tracks that you can choose from when the student goes there if they want to work in the AV department or they want to do children’s ministry or worship track or all kinds of different things that they can participate in. But that to me is a second to just the life training that they get in the biblical foundation, the encounters with God that they have.

And so yeah, not a paid advertisement. Nobody asked me to do it. I just wanted to share that with you today because I was so moved last weekend. Cm is the main website of the church and you can find Leaders Academy there on their website. Check it out today and I promise you will not regret it, you will be blessed, your entire family will be blessed.

Thanks for listening to WallBuilders Live.
