Welcome

Rick:

Welcome to the intersection of faith and the culture! This is WallBuilders Live.  We’re talking about today’s hottest topics on policy, faith, and other areas of the culture as well. All from a Biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective. We’re here with David Barton.  He’s America’s premiere historian and our founder and president here at WallBuilders. Also, Tim Barton national speaker and pastor.  And I’m Rick Green, former Texas state representative.

We’re a pro-family organization presenting America’s forgotten history and heroes with an emphasis on our religious, moral, and constitutional heritage. Check it out WallBuilders.com for more information or our radio website WallBuildersLive.com.

You found us on a Friday.  It’s a Good News Friday.  We love spending our Fridays catching up on some of the news stories that get lost in the shuffle or buried by the major media because they don’t want to talk about these great Biblical and conservative victories that are happening in the culture. So David and Tim gather those for us and share them rapid fire with us on Fridays. So, David, what’s our first piece of good news today?

David:

Well, it’s an apology. At least from my viewpoint, is probably not needed from yours. An apology that I didn’t start this thing off with some Christian music.  But just for you Rick, so that you would not be offended over this I did not play Christmas music although I do have some Christmas news.

Rick:

No wonder I have the Grinch reputation.

Tim:

Well, we are the culture of not offending people.  So I appreciate you recognizing this is a safe space.

Rick:

Yeah, I was going to say that I have a safe space I can hide in if you do decide to play something.

The War On Christmas Continues

David:

Well, usually, I’m not worried about micro-aggressions.  I do full force aggressions. But this time, out of my sensitivity to you, I didn’t play any Christmas music. But I do have some quick Christmas stories mopping it up from what happened with Christmas a month or so ago, some legal stories.

Menominee, Michigan, the Freedom From Religion Foundation went after the city there and said, “You’ve got to take your nativity scene down.  And they did.  But then Liberty Council gets involved and it gets put back up. So we get the law right on that one.  We’ve got the decisions right on that one.

Rick:

And without Liberty Counsel and other legal organizations that are friends of ours out there fighting these battles.  Those kinds of victories don’t happen. Because most people do take it down. Then there’s nobody there to fight back and say, “What?  Are you kidding me? No nativity scene no Christmas in America?” Anyway, we win those battles because these attorneys are ready to go on the spot.

David:

That’s right.  They fight back and they help cities get a little backbone and a little courage.  Because Freedom From Religion Foundation comes and they make their threats.  They bluster, and huff and puff.  And they don’t practice constitutional law.  They do personnel or insurance law.

Rick:

Meaning the guys most of the people on the city council?

David:

Yeah.

Tim

And on top of it, the idea of saying, “They don’t practice constitutional law.”  Well, that’s almost neither here nor there because when they went through law school they were probably told that this is what the law says. They probably had a pretty good tone of the negative sense of the separation of church and state and what they can’t do. So even though they don’t practice it they’ve still been indoctrinated probably from the wrong side of this.

Rick:

That’s true.

Standing Up For What’s Right No Matter The Age

David:

Then I’ve got one out of Arkansas.  The American Humanist Association went after a nativity scene and the federal judges did say, “Take it down.”

The city replied, “We don’t have the funds to be able to defend this.” So they left it down.

But An 81-year-old city resident, a lady named Sue Cristo, said, “Oh you don’t want to see the nativity scene?” Watch this, she got 61 one of them put up around the city. So that was really good. They take down one and get slapped with 61 others.  That can’t be a good feeling for them.

Tim:

That’s probably one of the best solutions to so many of these attacks. When things get attacked on city grounds so often we want to fight and say “how dare they take down this nativity scene on the city square?”

Well, if every business owner had one up in their city window it wouldn’t be a problem anyway. But so often we get frustrated by seeing this violated on on the city level.  But we don’t do a very good job sometimes ourselves of displaying it when we have the opportunity.

She did probably what we ought to be doing in every city, town, and community throughout the nation, making sure that we enact, enable, and enjoy those rights of displaying, based on the First Amendment, displaying our faith at Christmas and keeping Christ in Christmas. So bravo to her for doing that!

David:

Yeah, bravo to her! We can overwhelm these guys just by our free abilities. “You don’t want to see one? Here, let’s have 10,000 in town. Let’s have every citizen but one in their front yard. Let’s see how that works out for you.”

They may have won the battle but they’ll sure lose the war. They get the one taken down but suddenly they’re faced with one everywhere they turn.  That’s a that’s a good way to solve that problem.

Why Atheists Attack Christianity Only

One more related to Christmas.  Again, mopping up from what happened a few weeks ago. The American Atheist Society every year they lose their holiday campaign. I don’t know why they call it “holiday” because it’s after Christmas.  It’s not after anything else.  But they call it their “holiday campaign.”

This year it depicts a mother reading her daughter’s text messages to a friend. In the exchange that the daughter says that she’s not going to church anymore because she doesn’t believe in that stuff anymore and her parents will get over it.

So that’s the kind of stuff they’re doing in their campaign. “Hey young people, reject what your parents are doing.  Reject the religion stuff, and they’ll get over it, etc.”

So the question then becomes, “Okay, how come you guys don’t do that in Ramadan? And how come you don’t do that with other Islamic holidays or anything else?”

The answer is pretty simple.  They don’t go after headscarves in driver’s license photos, and they don’t go out for headscarves in libraries.  But they will go after a necklace with a cross in libraries as they did in Kentucky. So how come they don’t go after all these others?

Christianity, The True Religion Of Peace

Here’s somebody who actually was honest about it. It’s Professor Phil Zuckerman, the professor of secular studies at Pitzer College in Claremont, California. Here’s what he said about why they don’t do that, “I know what keeps me from critiquing Islam. It’s fear. I’ve got three kids. I know I can say anything about Christianity or Mormonism and I’m not living in fear.”

Which is a testament to Christianity and Mormonism, that’s wonderful.  So he’s actually thanking Christians for not trying to kill him when he says something bad about them. So at least we know that the reason that the atheists are willing to attack Christians and nobody else is they know we’re not going to kill them.

Tim:

They will go after Christians because they know that we’re the religion of peace. Oh, wait I forgot, that’s the other way around. My mistake. <Laughter>

David:

We are the ones with true peace.  We are the ones with a track record of peace. And if you want to be President Obama and have to back up 500 or 600 years to find atrocities, okay do that.  They happened 600 years ago. But you’re not you’re not going to find what you do with Islam for sure.

To get a secular atheist professor to acknowledge why he picks on Christians, “Because they don’t hurt me when I do it.” That’s a good testament to Christianity. But again this the report from three Christmas victories from last Christmas.

Rick:

Yeah, here we are talking about peace and Christianity.  David, that was your chance. You could’ve lead into a great, you know, Christmas song.  But oh well.

We’re going to take our regular break. We’ll come back and get some non-Christmas good news. I am starting to sound like a Grinch aren’t I?

David:

This is my late Christmas gift to you, no Christmas micro-aggressions.

Rick:

Alright, well, we’ll just go with our regular kind of music We’ll be right back.  We’ve got a lot of good news for you today. You’re listening to WallBuilders Live!

DVD On Common Core

David:

Hi, friends! This is David Barton of WallBuilders. The current condition of education in America is abysmal. Not only is educational achievement plummeting, but every year, some 19 percent of high school seniors who graduate is completely illiterate. They can’t read at all but it was not always this way.

For generations, we taught students how to think. But after the progressives took over education in the early 20th century, things began to radically change. Education shifted from thinking to learning, which made the emphasis on the teachers rather than the students. And that elevated indoctrination above knowledge.

At that time, progressives also made massive changes in the way we tested students. They extended school from 8 to 12 years. They introduced graded education and they added compulsory education. Statistics prove that these changes have harmed education rather than helped it. And now the progressives are pushing common core.

In our new DVD on common core, we give you eight reasons why this current approach is so dangerous to our kids and our culture. We also show you an amazing history of education. So get this new DVD at WallBuilders.com.

This Is What Happened When A Veteran Died Alone

Rick:

Thanks for staying with us on Good News Friday! Our first segment was some catch up on Christmas good news from around the country. But because we want you to listen next week we didn’t share with you the Christmas singing of the Bartons.

Tim:

It was really good, though.  You will be sad you missed it.  It was really special.

Rick:

Tim, what do have for good news?

Tim:

Well, this one is one that happened in Mississippi actually around Christmas time, really neat story. There was a Navy veteran whose name is Jerry Wayne Pino who he died at 70 years old.  He was a Vietnam veteran.  He was a petty officer third class. But when he died he had no family, no friends. Literally, he died alone.

After his death, his body laid unclaimed for several weeks at the funeral home so the funeral director was starting to wonder, “What am I supposed to do with his body?  How do we proceed because nobody’s come forward and claimed it.”

So, in the midst of this knowing that he was a military veteran they wanted to honor him but they weren’t really sure what to do. So the lady who was running the nursing home calls one of her friends who was also a veteran and says, “Hey, what can we do?” And so this other lady’s veteran friend starts working on things and trying to brainstorm. Then the director says, “Wait a second, let me ask my son.”

Millennials With Heart And Character

“School is out and they are on Christmas break.  Let me ask my son and see if he can get some of his friends and maybe they can be the pallbearers.  Maybe they can stand in and maybe they can do things.” So she a texted her, “Can you ask your friends?”

“Hang on let me find out.”  So he texts his friends and texts his mom back a few minutes later, “Hey I’ve got six friends.  We want to do it.  We’ll show up.  We’ll be ready.”

So the day of the funeral these kids show up dressed up and wearing ties.  They are the pallbearers for the funeral. They have an honor guard there who does the flag then presents the flag to these boys.

And the mom said she was just crying, that there were tears around. She was crying partly because she was sad that there wasn’t somebody there. But then was so excited to see these boys, local high school kids stepping forward who said, “I want to do something. I want to help.”

One of the boys was interviewed and he said, “It’s just the right thing to do. He served our country. He fought for our rights. For him to be buried alone with nobody there was just sad. I told myself I was going to do it and I did it.”

This group of high school students then took the flag and put it in this glass frame and they’ve taken it to their school.  They put it on display for these kids on the football team. So they have it on display in the locker room to acknowledge this military veteran.

Such a cool story, especially when you’re talking with these high school kids because it’s so easy to look at the bad apples. It’s so easy to look at millennials that are in this entitlement program who want these free speech zones and these micro-aggressions in offense and all these things are the negatives we see.  We sometimes forget and overlook that there are some really special kids with great integrity and character that want to do the right thing.  Heart’s in the right place, motivated, that are really doing positive things.

You Could Make A Difference Too

Of course, that’s one of the reasons we do Good News Friday, to bring these stories forward. But here’s an example of six boys from Mississippi who said, “You know what, I want to do something to honor someone that served our nation.” So they were the pallbearers at his funeral when nobody else wanted to go when nobody else showed up. These six high school boys did. So just a really cool story.

Rick:

I love the fact that they also too then take that back to the school because then it’s a lesson for all the other students as well. That Biblical lesson, you render honor to whom honor is due.

Tim:

I would think that many of those boys on that football team are now thinking, “You know what, I’m going to do that sometime.  I want to be somebody.” So it does set that tone and that example of what you can and even should do.

For our listeners, you should check with some of the local military groups and nursing homes around you because this man was 70 that died by himself.  It’s not all that uncommon these days, for a veteran to die and there’s nobody around them. They’ve served our nation but now there’s nobody to be with them.

Oftentimes you can find where there’s a funeral service going on and there’s nobody to stand there at this veteran’s funeral. So you, your family, or friend can go and be a part of this funeral just to be there, and as you said Rick, to give honor where honor is due, to honor someone that served our nation to give us our freedoms and our rights and the abilities that we enjoy.

Our Community Salutes

David:

That reminds me of another periphery kind of thing because these kids honoring this veteran we need to honor the kids.  And we’ve done that with Good News Friday. But remember the program we had recently with Ken Hartman? He’s got that program where we honor the kids that want to go into the military at their graduation. We honor them at the time that they’re making that decision in school.

You can go back in our archives and click on that link for that program and find out and hear more about it. It’s a great program to get involved with and it’s just a good way to honor the kids, not only the high school football team but also the ones in the high school that want to go into the military. That’s another way of giving honor to whom honor is do.

You can get involved in honoring those kids by Volunteering for Ken Hartman’s organization Our Community Salutes. When someone graduates in your school that wants to go in the military there are special things you can do to honor them. It’s a good way of bringing the wholesome values back to the younger generation, back to the millennials.

Rick:

Both of those are great action steps or for folks at home to participate in. We’ve got to take a quick break, folks.  We’ll be back with more good news on WallBuilders Live!

American History

This is David Barton with another moment from America’s history. Today we heard that our Founding Fathers were largely atheist, agnostic, or deist. The writings of Founding Father Richard Henry Lee strongly refute that assertion.

Richard Henry Lee was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.  He is specifically the man who made the motion in Congress that America separate from Great Britain. Following his death, his papers and correspondents, including numerous original handwritten letters from other prominent Founding Fathers, were passed on to his grandson.

After having studied those letters this was how the grandson described our Founding Fathers. He declared, “The wise and great men of those days were not ashamed publicly to confess the name of our blessed Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. On behalf of the people, as their representatives and rulers, they acknowledged the sublime doctrine of his mediation.”

Supreme Court Justices Need To Apply Original Intent Of The Constitution.

Rick:

Thanks for staying with us on WallBuilders Live! This is Good News Friday.  David Barton is next with more good news.  David what’s next?

David:

From Washington, D.C. to the entire nation, Congress right now, the Senate is particularly tied up with doing confirmation hearings on the various nominees of President Trump. Certainly one of the big positions that gets a lot of attention is the Supreme Court replacement for Justice Scalia.

At this particular point in time, there’s a national poll that came out on what people think they want in a Supreme Court justice. Three things stood out to me.  One is Americans were asked, “Is it an immediate priority and is it an important priority to appoint a Supreme Court justice that will interpret the Constitution as it was originally written?”

Okay.  Asking that question, what percent answered that yes or no?  We are asking for original intent.  How many in the nation come out  that it is a very high priority?

Rick:

I would think much higher than it would have been 5-6 years ago? The worse the Supreme Court decisions have been the last few years, the more educated people have gotten.

David:

So, you think a higher percentage thinks it’s an immediate priority?

Tim:

I would also guess it’s high because that was one of the major reasons that so many Christians went out and voted for Trump was based on Supreme Court.  I would certainly think that is a major issue.

David:

But that’s Christians, not the whole nation.

Tim:

At this point maybe 25% of the nation at least? But then you’re talking about the people that are surveyed that are vocal, that are active. I would think, gosh, at least at least 50 or 60% that would have an opinion about that?

David:

Rick?

Rick:

I’m guessing about 30-40% just didn’t know.  Let’s say 40% said that was important to them.  Maybe 20% said it wasn’t.  And then the rest just didn’t know.

David:

I’m going to have to call you guys Eeyore,  You are really pessimistic, sad, and droopy.

Tim:

I said 50 to 60%!

David:

It was 80%.

Tim:

Wow!

Rick:

Woah!

David:

80% said that it is an immediate and important priority to get a Supreme Court justice who applies original intent and interpreted the Constitution.

Protecting Our Religious Freedom

Rick:

For a guy that wrote a book entitled Original Intent, that’s got to sound pretty cool!

David:

It is pretty cool! I’ll take that.  I’ll take any Supreme Court justice no matter who nominates them if they are supporters of original intent. If they do that, we’re in safe hands.  That takes care of the activism.

Now, there were two other things tucked away in here that I thought was very good. One is, what percentage of Americans do you think would say that they see protecting religious freedom as a priority for a Supreme Court justice?

Rick:

Man, well, if 80% said the original intent was important then I would think, I don’t know, that much or more? Maybe the same or even 85%?

David:

89 %!

Rick

Wow!

Tim

You didn’t let me guess. I was so going to say 89%.

Rick:

I bet you were!

Tim:

It was at the tip of my tongue.  It was there.

David:

It was there.

Tim:

The words were forming.

Religious Freedom VS Government Laws

David:

Here’s the next one. When religious freedom comes into conflict with government laws, which side should win?  What’s the margin?

Tim:

Well, we know which side should win.  But I guess we’re asking what percentage of people.

David:

Yeah, when you asked if religious freedom comes into conflict with government laws which side should win, which side did people say should win?

Tim:

I would certainly think they would go with the side of religious freedom mostly because what we saw, especially in exit polling, that people were frustrated with government, with where it was. So, they can’t be thinking government’s a winner on this one.  So, probably 60-70% range that support this religious freedom idea.

David:

Yeah, it was 65% to 25%.

Rick:

Yeah, I thought that one would be lower because there might be some people that think, “Well but what about the extreme cases?  The law vs. religious liberty.  What about the radical Muslim?” So, because of some interpretations on that, that sounds about right that it would drop off by 20-25 points.

David:

But still, it’s a 40 point margin.

Tim:

That’s huge!  That’s a big deal.

Rick:

Who did this poll?

David:

The Marist Poll. The Marist Poll did this.  The significance to that is when you get Little Sisters of the Poor at the Supreme Court and you’ve got essentially 80% who say, “We want original intent people.” 90% say, “We want religious freedom protected.” And by 40 plus margin, they say, “We want religious freedom to win over government policy.”

Oh my gosh, think what that means for all the bakers, florists, and all the photographers. This is really, really, hugely good news for religious liberty in America, that Americans see it that way and that’s who they want on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Rick:

Well, it also tells you how overstepped the Supreme Court has been with its decisions and other federal judges over the last few years. Hopefully, the Trump administration and the Senate will see that and both will appoint and approve judges that fit exactly what those folks were saying.

We’ve got to take a quick break for our final segment of good news. Stay with us, folks. We will be right back to WallBuilders Live!

Rick:

Thanks for staying with us today here a while but a lie. We’re back with David and Tim Barton for some more good news. And Tim I think you’re first up for our final segment.

Thanks Obama

Rick:

Thanks for staying with us for some more good news on WallBuilders Live! We are back with David and Tim Barton with some more good news! Tim, I think you’re up on our final segment!

Tim:

This is an interesting piece of good news. It’s not often that you would have the NRA, Gun Owners of America, or different groups that were thanking President Obama. So it’s rather unique.  In fact, if I were to ask this question, and it does sound like it should be a joke, “Why would the NRA thank President Obama?

It’s not exactly a joke.  But the result is almost rather humorous. Why would the NRA, Gun Owners of America, and different gun groups be thanking President Obama?

Rick:

For leaving Washington, D.C.?

Tim:

That’s a good answer.

David:

I would say because he drove gun sales through the roof!

Tim:

That’s right! He has been referred to as “The Salesman In Chief” for the gun industry.

David:

That’s right.

Rick:

Oh, that’s great!

Tim:

Over the last 19 months in a row, the number of terrorist attacks around the world has increased which with every terrorist attack there has been a boom in gun sales. Now, obviously, it’s terrible that we are having these terror attacks and that’s certainly not the direction we want to go. We’re praying that under Trump that a lot of this can change and go a different direction.

But, in 2016 there were twenty-seven and a half million guns sold. That’s 4 million more than 2015.  So, just really remarkable the gun sales that have been going on.

What’s interesting is in the midst of the violence, brutality, and the media portraying guns as the evil, “It’s not that we have these extreme Muslim terrorists that are attacking and doing things. No, it’s really the guns.  It’s the bombs.  It’s the pressure cookers.” We try to blame everything but ideology.

Gun Sales Are Booming

But the American people are recognizing what Wayne LaPierre said probably two years ago now after one of these mass shootings, “The best way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”

And Americans are increasingly recognizing that in a rather hostile world we’re now living in, where there are so many terrorist attacks, the best way that we can protect ourselves is in fact if we have a gun so we can stop the bad guy with a gun because we’re a good guy with a gun. But it is something rather remarkable for gun sales in America.

Rick:

It is! I saw another piece of good news that Florida lawmakers are introducing legislation to actually eliminate the gun free zones in some of these airport areas after this Fort Lauderdale shooting.

So, rather than the knee-jerk liberal reaction, “That means we need more gun free zones.” They’re saying, “Wait a minute, there should’ve been some people in there able to defend themselves against this guy.”

So, they’re actually wanting to do the right thing which is making sure that more citizens are able to defend themselves in these areas rather than only saying that the good guys can’t have guns. But if you’re willing to ignore the law then sure you’ve got a chance to walk in with a gun. That’s a reflection of the people having the right position if these legislators are bringing that legislation.

So, more good news on the gun front as well!  Lots of good news! Thank you guys for so much today.  We will have more good news for you next week.  You’ve been listening to WallBuilders Live!
