Rick:

Find your way to the intersection of faith and the culture. It’s WallBuilders Live, where we’re talking about the hottest topics of the day from a biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective. Good to have you with us. My name is Rick Green. I’m a former Texas legislator and America’s Constitution coach. And I have the honor of being here with Tim Barton. He’s a national speaker and pastor and president of WallBuilders, and David Barton, he’s America’s premier historian and our founder of WallBuilders.

WallBuilders, by the way, comes from that scripture in Nehemiah that says, arise and rebuild the walls that we may no longer be of reproach. This was founded 30 years ago by David Barton for the very purpose of rebuilding the foundations in America. That scripture in Nehemiah, if you kind of get a time machine and you go back to that day, if your city did not have those outer walls, you would be run over, you needed those walls for protection for strength. And in the same way, our value system, our foundation in America, that’s what makes us strong. Because when we lose the principles, the timeless principles of liberty that made America the most powerful, most free, most benevolent nation in the history of the world, if we lose the principles, then we lose the great benefits that come from those principles.

And so WallBuilders is all about restoring those principles, restoring our constitutional republic by restoring the timeless principles of liberty upon which our nation was built. Those are, of course, biblical principles. We always look at these things from, you know, whatever the hot topic is. And it could have to do with politics, it could be some sort of policy, it could be election issue, it could be a cultural issue locally and entertainment issue, you name it. But we are always going to take that biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective.

Check us out at wallbuilderslive.com, for more information. And also, that’s where you can get archives of the program, you can get a list of stations we’re on around the country. And you can make that one-time or monthly contribution. I got to pause for a second and say, listen, if you want to have truth, if you want to have more people educated on the truth of our country, then come alongside us, support us financially, and that basically makes you a force multiplier. It allows you to help us multiply our voice, reach more people, and therefore educate more people on how to be good biblical citizens in modern America. Hope you’ll consider doing that today at wallbuilderslive.com.

Alright, David and Tim, Rob McCoy with us, pastor from Thousand Oaks a little later in the program. But it is so encouraging lately to see so many people asking the right questions, actually, interested in history, interested in the constitution, interested in what the Bible says about how community should work, how our nation should work. And that is causing really a great level of learning happening across the country, which means we need lots of teachers across the country. And more and more pastors speaking out on these things is encouraging as well. More pastors being bold, actually, diving back into history and saying, hey, what can we learn from what previous generations have done? So I just see a lot of good coming out of this thirst for knowledge and truth that we’ve been saying we needed and we know is missing. But the fact that there’s more and more people teaching and getting lots of views and getting lots of interest tells me the hunger is out there, at least among some folks.

David:

Yeah. And I think it’s a good distinction to make among some folks. Because even as you look at a state like California, where there are so much gubernatorial oppression of the people, and so much so that they’re pushing back, and I think they got 1.9 million signatures on the recall of the governor, and they only need 1.5 million, actually, they probably do need 2 million, because so many will be thrown out the way the Secretary of State does it. But nonetheless…

Rick:

Wait, you mean they’re going to actually check signatures, I mean, verify? Wow.

David:

Yeah, they do that when it comes to removing one of their own elected officials. But when it comes to voting and checking signatures on ballots and absentee ballots, no, no, all signatures are good then. So it is a double standard. But even in a state like California where that you originally had back in May about 1500 pastors say, look, we’ve had it with the shutdown, we’re not going to shut our churches anymore. We’re going to stand up. Even going past that we had, I think week, week and a half ago, we had Pastor Mike McClure out of Calvary Chapel, San Jose, his church has now been fined two and a half million dollars for being open.

And when I was up there speaking to his church, it’s like in a three County area. It’s like he’s the only church open in three counties. You’re going oh my gosh, people, where are the leaders? Well, they’re all coming him. I mean, his services are packed out because people do want a leader, they do want someone speaking clarity and speaking with backbone. And so it’s like, there’s such a need and such a hunger and yet so many people are missing the opportunity to teach others or to speak.

And one of the things that we’re really emphasizing right now is that everybody can be a teacher to others. And the concept of mentoring someone of finding one individual and discipling them, that is more important now than it’s ever been. And that’s really what changed America across time. It was not these mass meetings and huge things. I mean, we forget that George Whitfield in the Great Awakening, yes, 80% of Americans heard him speak. But the reason was because he was in that many local communities. It wasn’t like he was having stadium meetings and have 400,000 marching on the state capitol. I mean, he went to a town of 200, or town of 5,000, or town of 3,300, or whatever, and there was that kind of small level of contact, if I can say it that way, low level contact with not many people. And so this is the time where every one of us can take the principles that we’re learning, the history that we’re knowing, we can start teaching those that are younger than us or those that are older than us and help them understand.

But going back to California, Mike McClure is one of the guys who has really stepped up. Another one who stepped up is Pastor Rob McCoy. And Rob was a great pastor, had a growing church, and they got involved in civil government, was elected, became the mayor of Thousand Oaks, California, which is not a small town; that’s, I think, 125,000 or so in that town. He was the mayor. And then when the governor said, hey, everybody, the churches have to shut down, he’s like, no, I’m not shutting down. So I’ll resign as mayor to keep the church open, because I don’t want to put a conflict there between church and state, so to say, just didn’t think it looked right for the mayor to keep the church open when the governor said you had to shut it down.

So he showed backbone all along the way and the growth of his church and what’s happening, the growth of his podcast, the growth of the pieces he’s putting out, the teaching he is doing, I mean, it is going viral across the nation. Rick, I think you’ve really hit it. People are hungry for history, and practical application, and for Bible teaching in a way that we have not seen that that I don’t recall in recent years. Now, I’m not seeing all step forward that should, I wish to have a whole lot more voices doing this. But the ones that are doing it, oh my gosh, they’re blown up and it’s grown and they’re really meeting the needs of people.

Rick:

Well, and that’s certainly Rob McCoy. I mean it’s so fun to watch this happen and people learning, not only from his church, but people all over the country and frankly around the world watching online to learn as well. So we’re going to learn about his new program Vintage McCoy, and Vintage McCoy himself will be with us when we return from the break. Stay with us, Rob McCoy, our special guests today on WallBuilders Live.

BREAK

This is Tim Barton from WallBuilders with another moment from American history. American patriot Paul Revere Rhodes who alerted Americans of the impending arrival of the British, but he also sought patriot leaders Samuel Adams and John Hancock to warn them that the British were seeking their execution. Adams and Hancock were staying with the Reverend Jonas Clark and Lexington.

When they ask Pastor Clark if his church was ready for the approaching British, he replied, “I’ve trained them for this very hour, they will fight and if need be die under the shadow of the house of God.” Later that morning, 70 men from his church, a several 100 British in the first battle of the war for independence. As Pastor Clark affirmed, “The militia that morning were the same who filled the pews of the church meaning house on the Sunday morning before.” The American church was regularly at the forefront of the fight for liberty.

Rick:

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live. Thanks for staying with us. So thrilled to have Pastor Rob McCoy back with us from Thousand Oaks, California. Pastor Rob, love you, brother. Appreciate some time today.

Rob:

Bless you, Rick. Good to be with you.

Rick:

Wait, I’m confused. I thought maybe your first name would change the Vintage, because I want this new logo on your new show “Vintage McCoy”. I mean, it just sounds like a Western. I mean, I got excited just when I saw the logo. And then when I started watching the interviews with Kirk and all the other people you got, I love it, brother. You are reaching back into history and bringing it to life for folks and teaching us real lessons that we desperately need today.

Roc:

Well, you know, it’s not like we haven’t done this before. We just got to dusk off the old books and find the answers. So we got 6,000 years of recorded history and what we’re going through as a country, people have gone through this before. So let’s find out how they handled it and they got answers.

Rick:

Well, you had been doing nightly, basically a Fireside Chat for goodness, it’s been going on a year, almost.

Rob:

Yeah, an entire year with a Fireside Chat with no fireplace.

Rick:

That’s impressive as you could have at least had a cigar go, and so there was a little bit of a fire, you know, just a small fire at, you know…

Rob:

Dennis Prager already does that.

Rick:

He’s got that covered. Yeah. Well, I do have to say, man, you covered a lot of ground in those, everything from the science with the whole COVID craziness and the doctors and the experts to theology to you name it, I mean, you’ve covered a lot of great ground. This new kind of twist on it with the Vintage McCoy, you’re really specifically saying we’re essentially going to go back to school, we’re going to learn the secret sauce and we’re going to start education people on how to turn the country around, at least that’s the way I took it.

Rob:

Exactly. I mean, we haven’t finished the logo completely, because at the top, it says, “History Matters”. And if we’re going to make disciples, the ideas we’ve got to, like I said before, dust off the old books, primarily, the Bible. That’s where we’re going with the lion’s share of this. But we’re also going to look at what it means to be an American. You know, our faults as a nation are universal to every other country that’s ever existed. But our successes are unique. And as we study history, honestly, people start to awaken to this great gift we’ve been given a constitutional republic. And that’s what I’m hoping to make his disciples, Christ’s followers in the Ecclesia, the public square that understand the value of this great gift of government we’ve been given.

Rick:

Well, it’s good stuff. And you got our buddy Bob McEwen on. I saw it was called McEwan Monday, so does that mean you’re going to be able to rope him in weekly on this?

Rob:

Most every Monday, for example, this Monday, we can’t because he’s at the CNP, Council for National Policy, and he heads that up, so he’s busy. But every other Monday, we’ll have him. Bob McEwen speaking, I just love that man’s voice, he’s butter.

Rick:

Well, its contents incredible too. I always tell him when I see him, you know, you’re the second most pirated content for me. Most of my stuff from David Barton, but a whole lot from Bob McEwen. So no, he’s really, really good. And so I mean, you’re hitting economics, you’re hitting, when does government get too big, what does tyranny look like, I mean, all of these topics that are as timely as they could possibly be. And like you said, you know, go into the Bible to say, what does the Bible say about these things?

Rob:

Friday of last week, we had Bill Federer, and we got a really large Christian school here in Ventura. And they invited a speaker who embraces critical race theory. Now, they would say he doesn’t. Oh, I’ve seen his work, we’ve done extensive research, it’s critical race theory. They can hit whatever they want about it, we’ve done the work.

And so we brought in three pastors to address critical race theory. We brought in Bill Federer and he went straight to the scriptures and pull that thing apart. You know, we’re having to deal with that in public schools. Why do we have to deal with this in Christian Schools? In California, you know, we are decimated. We’ve got a church, my friend’s church in San Jose, over $2 million in fines. And you have a Christian school that’s concerned about racial reconciliation when we’ve got churches that have $2 million in fines, not to say that racial reconciliation is important. But we’re watching as liberties are being destroyed and the Left wants to use race to divide us. And why do we have to buy into that narrative and play by their rules? Really, with Christ, we’re all one in Christ. Galatians covers that. Romans covers that. Bill Federer did an amazing job so did the other pastors, it was awesome.

Rick:

Man, that’s a big one, Rob. And it is not only in the Christian Schools, it’s in the churches. I mean, we have pastors that have become woken and bought into this stuff. And you know, if it was the 1960s, totally different story. It’s not the 1960s. It’s a very different America today and then we’ve made such great strides. It’s a manufactured crisis and they’re using it to usher in Marxism, no doubt about it.

Rob:

Well, they want to take an immutable treat and pit us against one another. And this pastor is talking about how reparations are in the Bible and he goes through oppressed and oppressors. All of these are Marxist terminologies. And you look at Manning Johnson, I kind of got to look that name up. He was a communist in the 1930s, a black American, and he became a communist, went to Russia, and realized they’re playing the race card, came back and wrote this book on race and addressed what Marxism is trying to do in America. And what he wrote back then is so true today.

And the Apostle Paul said to Peter straight to his face, when he was trying to play the Gentile-Jew game. He goes, no, no, no, I told him straight to his face, you’re wrong. And then with book of Galatians were one in Christ, you know, neither Jew nor Gentile, slave nor free, male nor female, were one in Christ. And when you stepped out of that, the apostle Paul said not once, but twice in the first chapter, may you be accursed. And when he says foolish Galatians, the word foolish means shallow in analysis: you just not doing your homework. This is just regurgitated Marxism. Wake up, church!

Rick:

Yeah. Amen. Amen. And I couldn’t understand if you said Manning, but it is Manning Johnson.

Rob:

Yeah, Johnson. I’m sorry. You’re right.

Rick:

But pulling out those stories like that is critical right now. This is kind of the Josiah thing. You mentioned this when we did film the Biblical Citizenship in Modern America. And for our listeners out there, I mean, Rob McCoy dropped so many truth bombs in that course. It is just incredible and he was gracious enough to let us film it there at his church. But you talked about Josiah that Sunday before that and just the awakening that happens when you pull out the scrolls when you read the history, when you read God’s word, and you realize this is who we’re supposed to be, and you’re peeling back the curtain with this Vintage McCoy series. And we want people to watch this. I mean, this is a great way to get educated.

I got to tell you, Rob, one of the things that encourages me right now, is it’s not just sound bites that people are paying attention to. You got thousands of people watching you for an hour, hour and a half at a time diving deep into these things. That’s encouraging to me because we are in a soundbite culture and all that and people are media gratification. But people are hungry enough to stick around and have the deeper conversations that a year ago they weren’t willing to do.

Rob:

I’m cracking up to what you’re saying. Because when we started this, like you said over a year ago, we had 22 subscribers on our YouTube channel; we are doing it for our 65 and older who with comorbidities were shut in. And really our very first broadcast looked like an ISIS beheading video, because we had this black backdrop, one grainy camera. And over time, it started to realize it’s not the quality of the production, although we’ve improved on that, it’s the content that people are hungry for, and they stick around now we’re 26,000 subscribers and we average 8,000-10,000 views per episode, that’s a pretty good ROI as far as subscribers and views. So and I don’t know, this world of social media, but people are hungry for substance. You’re absolutely right, Rick, they’re hungry for substance.

Rick:

And I mean, just to the audience, like I say, hey, Rob didn’t call me and say, hey, would you promote this on your show? I go out and watch you on Sundays because I think your preaching is just stellar and so needed right now and it’s truth for our time. And so sometimes we go on and watch on the YouTube channel, and so I saw the Vintage McCoy’s, I called Rob, and it’s like, we want to promote this. So you don’t even self-promote. I mean, people are just coming to this, they’re just hungry for it, they’re finding it. And I just think that’s encouraging. I mean, people are doom and gloom right now. But when I see this happening, and people lapping it up, I mean, they’re literally hungry for it.

And I think it’s hungry for righteousness. They’re tired of the fake. They’re tired of the hypocrisy. And when you have that hour long conversation, and you’re just real, and these guys come in, like Federer and Kirk and Bob McEwen and all these other guys, I mean, that is a conversation that people want to have. It’s almost like we’re going back to where people literally sat and listened to real reason, real civil discourse, if you will.

And if we get more and more people willing to do that, we’ve got a shot at saving this thing. If we don’t, if everybody’s going to shut down the opposition, and there’s no discussion or we’re too shallow to have more than a two minute conversation, then forget it we’re not going to save it. But what I see right now is that people do want the depth, they’re hungry for it, and they’re hungry for God’s word. And that’s what you’re bringing into the mix that’s so powerful. So YouTube is the place to go. It’s easy.

You can you can go to YouTube and just search for Godspeed and Godspeed Calvary Chapel will come up and you can not only watch Vintage McCoy on a daily basis, you can also see Rob sermons on Sunday mornings. Brother, this is so important what you’re doing, man.

Rob:

Rick, you’re preciously kind and I’m thankful for that. I you talked about McEwen and Federer and Charlie Kirk and Kirk Cameron. One of the most watched episodes was a lady named Reinette Senum, who was the mayor of Nevada City, California, a lesbian, agnostic and she came on the program and it was hilarious because she knows me as a right wing evangelical fundamentalist preacher. And here she is with her, I think it was spouse, I think they’re married in California and I said, we have opposing views but we’re unified in liberty, and she’s standing strong. And like me and me like her she stepped down from her elected office because of the tyranny of California. So this is attracting people from every walk of life and their streams of liberty have dried up so they’ve gone upstream and they come to find out 2 Corinthians 3 says that where the Spirit of the Lord is there’s liberty and the source of liberty is Jesus.

Rick:

I know you’re not going to like me saying this, but you’re Paul for today, man. Your you’re rebuilding the Ecclesia, this is to be able to have those kind of conversations, to be willing to go and speak and have others come and speak and have that civil discourse. More of this if I was tweeting, more in all caps period of all caps period, this all caps period, more of this. This is what we need in the culture. Rob McCoy, you are a blessing, brother. I just appreciate you, man. It’s great to sharpen some iron with you today. I want people to go right now to youtube.com, subscribe to Godspeed Calvary Chapel and then not only the Vintage McCoy but get Sunday sermons from Rob. A lot of people still watching from home and not able to meet locally and I really encourage you to get Rob’s messages. Appreciate you, brother. Thanks for some time today, man.

Rob:

Oh, Rick, you blessed me more than you know. You’re amazing. So God bless you and all of your listeners. Now the work you’re doing is just absolutely critical and do not grow weary in well doing my dear brother.

Rick:

Amen. Amen. Right back at you. Folks, you can get more Rob McCoy at their YouTube channel and then also watch Biblical Citizenship in Modern American, you get a lot of Rob McCoy in there, and Kirk Cameron and David Barton and all the rest too, host that class at your church. Stay with us, we’ll be right back with David and Tim Barton.

BREAK

Hey, guys, we want to let you know about a new resource we have at WallBuilders called “The American Story. For so many years, people have asked us to do a history book to help tell more of the story that’s just not known or not told today. And we would say very providentially, in the midst of all of the new attacks coming out against America, whether it be from things like the 1619 project that say America is evil, and everything in America was built off slavery, which is certainly not true or things like even the Black Lives Matter movement, the organization itself, not out the statement Black Lives Matter, but the organization that says we’re against everything that America was built on, and this is part of the Marxist ideology. There’s so many things attacking America.

Well, is America worth defending? What is the true story of America? We actually have written and told that story. Starting with Christopher Columbus, going roughly through Abraham Lincoln, we tell the story of America not as a story of a perfect nation of a perfect people. But the story of how God used these imperfect people and did great things through this nation. It’s a story you want to check out wallbuilders.com “The American Story”.

Rick:

We’re back here on WallBuilders Live. Thanks for staying with us. And thanks to Pastor Rob McCoy. Be sure to check him out at Godspeed Calvary Chapel. You can go to their YouTube channel and watch not only their sermons on Sunday morning, but Rob’s daily show Vintage McCoy, just good stuff. David, Tim, again, you know, I think I don’t know that you mentioned this earlier, David. But so many of this teaching is coming from California Jack Hibbs, Rob McCoy, we had Mike Maclaurin just a few weeks ago, a lot of great leadership and training coming from a state that maybe the church in other states doesn’t expect it to come from.

David:

No, it’s coming from there. And maybe it’s because they’re in the center of the fire more than states in the Bible belt had been. I mean, these guys are seeing more loss of freedom and liberty, things that we never imagined would happen, they’re seeing happen. And so it makes sense that they’re coming out of there.

One of the things you guys talked about that really struck me and I’ve been marveling over this for the last two years, and I guess what I’m about to say goes to the fact that we no longer teach history or government to any great degree. But over the last two years, three or four years ago, I said, look, everybody knows communism is a bad deal. They know it’s really bad deal. They know what it’s done. It’s just not going to do anything here. And then when all the canceled culture started, and the tearing down of the statues happened, I was shocked at how many young people had communist tattoos on their arms or wrist or hand, the hammer and sickle. I go, do you guys really not understand and back eight years ago, Che Guevara, the butcher of Cuba became a great landmark figure for so many young people, and you saw his figure at the heads of the rallies. Do you guys not know who he is?

You guys are talking about regurgitated Marxism. I’m not even sure people today know what Marxism is. And it’s like, we’re going to have to back up and say, okay, there’s different types of government. Here’s what communism is. Here’s what Marxism is. Here’s why socialism is in relation to those two things. Here’s who Karl Marx is. I mean, these are now favorite philosophies in so many parts of the country and I never thought they would be.

Tim:

Well, and let’s point out to they’re not favored philosophies in the ideology of what they are, they’re favored in the way they’re presented, because so many people embrace socialism without actually knowing what socialism is. They don’t know what it produce is, the same thing with Marxism. People, by and large, do not know what Marxism is. And the same thing is they have these communist dictators as heroes on their t shirts and they think they’re great people, they don’t actually know who they are and what they did. But when you have an ignorant populace, and they’re told something is good, this is the challenge that we are engaging in culture is how do you shift back from people who don’t know those ideas and how do you communicate that to them?

David:

And you know, as we’re leading up to the American war for independence, it’s interesting to me than looking back on those old sermons, there were pastors who were actually preaching about different forms of government, because they’d had monarchies, but that’s not the way to go. What you want is an elected form of government, republican form of government. They preached about democracies versus republics versus monarchies versus constitutional governments. And it’s almost like the pulpit is going to have to get back to teaching some basic civics and some basic government in the same way we did back then.

Because the concepts of Marxism and communism and socialism, these are concepts that are covered in the Bible, at least the philosophy is behind them, and therefore it’s good for teaching from that standpoint. But I think it’s going to get back to where that the pulpit is going to have to become the school teachers in a lot of ways, because a lot of school used to teach and should be teaching is no longer what they are teaching. And that’s where people like Rob McCoy doing such a good job of reeducating folks on things that we should have known, but really don’t and it’s a great thing he’s got going with Vintage McCoy.

Rick:

Alright, friends, well, find out more at wallbuilderslive.com, also go to Biblicalcitizens.com. In fact, our guest today, Rob McCoy is a big part of that new course.
