Faith And The Culture

Rick:

Welcome to the intersection of faith and the culture.  This is WallBuilders Live! Where we talk about today”€™s hottest topics on policy, faith, and the culture. Always from a Biblical, historical, and Constitutional perspective.

We’re here with David Barton, America’s premier historian. He”€™s also the founder of WallBuilders. Also, Tim Barton, the president of WallBuilders and a national speaker and pastor. And my name is Rick Green, I’m a former Texas state legislator.

You”€™ve found us on a Friday. We call Friday’s our Good News Friday program because it’s a chance for us kind of catch up on a lot of the news that you have not heard. Some things that are happening out there that are actually good news. Sometimes we only hear the bad news. And especially when it comes to good news about positive Biblical constitutional issues, you typically don’t hear it from the major media.

If you’d like more of that after today’s program, you can go to WallBuildersLive.com – that’s our radio website. We keep archives there for the last few months and you can listen to some more Friday– some Good News Friday programs there. Then you can also go to WallBuilders.com. That’s our main website and there’s a lot of great tools there to help equip and inspire your family to be better citizens.

So, David, Tim, looking forward to some good news today and David’s going to start us. Go ahead, bro.

Unemployment Claims Hit 45 Year Low

David:

I’ll start here with a report from UPI. And UPI is not necessarily a conservative source. It’s kind of like AP – they tend to look for bad things, but even they report that U.S. unemployment claims have now hit a forty five year low. Forty five years. When was 45 years ago?

That’s back in Jimmy Carter”€™s day, I guess, isn”€™t it? Let”€™s see, no, that”€™s even before that. Man, you’ve got to go back to Richard Nixon days to have lower unemployment than where we are right now, so that’s going back a ways.

And they show that last year two million new jobs were created – 250,000 manufacturing, mining, and logging, and 210,000 in construction. And just last month 200,000 new jobs were added including 36,000 new jobs in construction. I’ll point out that last month is a winter month. So, if you’re adding jobs in construction in a winter month that’s pretty amazing. The unemployment rate is now  4.1 percent.

And actually, for three straight months, earnings have increased, hourly earnings have increased. So, very, very, good news on the economic front.

Rick:

Hey, there’s even more, David, by the way, just the fact that we actually had a surplus. I know that’s hard to imagine that we would say the word “€œsurplus”€.

David:

You and Kara had a surplus?

Rick:

No, this is the federal government. Federal and surplus in the same sentence.

David:

Wait a minute–

Rick:

I don’t think we’ve said–

David:

No, no, no–

Rick:

–since the 80s.

The Federal Government Had a Surplus?!

David:

–you’re making that up. There’s no way the federal government had a surplus.

Rick:

And just to be clear, just for the month, right, so it”€™s just in the month of January. But still they– let”€™s see if I can get my numbers right here. So, this–

David:

Well, that’s how you start retiring debt is you start having surpluses.

Rick:

No doubt. That’s what they should do with the money. Exactly what they should do with the money.

David:

By the way, let’s point out that the federal government had a tax cut bill that gave money back. And now that they gave money back, more money is coming into the treasury.

Rick:

Imagine that.

David:

Now, that’s counterintuitive, but it works every time it’s tried. When you have tax cuts, it stimulates and spurs the economy and you get growth – which gives you more income.

Rick:

If I remember right, so when Reagan came in and he did his “€˜81 tax cuts, the revenue actually doubled.

David:

Wow.

Rick:

So, that the federal revenue that came in doubled. The problem was the spending tripled and that’s where the deficits came in. Because the Democrats were in charge in the 80s, and they spent even more, and it became these massive deficits, even with more money coming in.

Now in this case, if I understand this right, it was about a 50– looks like 50 billion dollar surplus in the month of January.

David:

Wow.

A Positive Sign for the Impact of These Tax Cuts

Rick:

So, they took in 361 billion, spent 311 billion. Now, that doesn’t mean that for the whole year it’s going to be like that. For the year– for the fiscal year of 2018 it still looks like a deficit. But it’s just a great indication in that 30 day period of the impact of these tax cuts. And the fact that people are spending more money because they have more of their own money, that creates more revenue.

It’s just– it’s a very positive sign for what the impact of these tax cuts are going to be.

Tim:

And I’ll even point out– S0, speaking of having more money, people spending more money, one of the things that we’ve talked about many times on the program is how companies are giving bonuses to their employees because of the tax cuts – they’re getting more money in. So, we’ve gone through the list of these businesses. Well, I have an article that highlights another business. And this is actually a pretty sweet deal, a pretty sweet bonus, and “€œsweet”€ being the pun in this because it’s Hostess.

David:

*laughter* There you go.

Tim:

So, Hostess has– and I don’t know if you guys saw this a week or two ago because it was really neat – they didn’t just say, “€œWe’re giving money back.”€ And obviously, everybody would love to have more money in their pocket. They’d love to get a bonus. Hostess is giving 1,250 dollars, a one time bonus to their workers.

So, obviously that’s a big deal. It’s not these little crumbs that some of the Democratic leaders want to talk about. That doesn’t mean anything.

David:

Yeah, that”€™d be Wasserman Schultz and Nancy Pelosi, “€œOh, a thousand dollars.”€

Tim:

Yeah, Nancy Pelosi says, “€œOh, it’s just crumbs. Nobody cares about crumbs.”€ No, a thousand dollar crumbs I care a lot about.

A Crumb Analogy

David:

Now, wait a minute, are we saying “€œcrumbs”€ because it”€™s Hostess? Is that why we’re doing the crumb analogy?

Tim:

Well–

Rick:

I want to know if you guys thought about that before the show today. Like if Tim already knew he was going to have this Hostess story and he was just waiting for the moment to talk about “€œsweet”€. Or did that just hit you right in the moment?

Tim:

No really, I just thought “€œsweet”€ it was a sweet deal and it just happened to work because it was Hostess.

Rick:

You didn’t bring any Hostess treats–

Tim:

No, no–

Rick:

–for David and me and the studio?

Tim:

Actually, so speaking of bringing Hostess treats for the studio, here’s one of my favorite parts about the bonus that Hostess is giving. Not that they”€™re just giving money, but they’re also giving a one year of free snacks to all of their employees.

David:

I love it.

Tim:

Every single week, they have like a box of the week. And so they, whatever it is right, so the ding dongs, or the cupcakes, or the Twinkies, or whatever it is. So, every week it’s a different box, so this box everybody gets to bring home cupcakes. And next week it”€™s this.

Rick:

Okay, so you had me tempted for a moment when you said one year for– I was wondering could I– does that apply if you get a job next week there? Because I would go apply if it meant I was. But I thought that meant it was going to be shipped to my house. You mean I”€™ve got to actually show up to work at Hostess to get the treat of the day.

Plus Free Dessert!

Tim:

Well, when they said it”€™s one year of free dessert, I thought, “€œWell, you really could make some money on this deal, right, if you eat a lot of dessert.”€ And then I realized, “€œOh, no, it’s just a box a week, so it’s not quite– if you”€™re big dessert eater, maybe not enough for a whole year, I don’t know. But either way, it’s one of those things that we have seen with the tax cuts. It’s made a difference in the economy, its made a difference for businesses, unemployment rate is changed.

David:

By the way, that’s now more than 200 major businesses who have given a cash amount back to their employees. And so there was about a thousand dollars that each person gets back off the tax cut. But now you’re looking at what, twelve hundred fifty more from Hostess plus a box of snacks every week for 52 weeks.

Tim:

Yeah, that’s a pretty good deal.

David:

That’s a good deal.

Tim:

And certainly positive things we’re seeing in the economy. And certainly, we hope it continues to turn that direction. But right now, this is really good news.

Rick:

It”€™s good news all the way around. Got to take a quick break. So, we’re loving what we’re seeing in the economy. These principles work, folks. When you put the right principles in place, you get good results and in this case, you can get a Hostess cupcake or whatever the particular favorite is that week.

Stay with us. You’re listening to WallBuilders Live.

Moment From America”€™s History

David:

This is David Barton with another moment from America’s history. America has a history of great patriots who love and sacrificed much for their country. One of these was John Witherspoon a signer of the Declaration of Independence. While President at Princeton he personally trained many who became important leaders in American government including James Madison. How could John with a spoon tell if someone really loved America?

He explained, “€œHe is the best friend to American liberty who his most sincere and active in promoting true and undefiled religion and who sits himself with the greatest firmness to bear down profanity and immorality of every kind. Whoever is an avowed enemy of God I hesitate not to call him an enemy to his country.”€ Founding Father John Witherspoon believed that a true American patriot opposed profanity and immorality and promoted true and undefiled religion. Rick:

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live. Good News Friday today. Thanks for staying with us. We’re going to jump into some more good news. Tim, you join us on the tax one last time, but you’re still first up this time. Go for it.

Tim:

Yeah, guys, I have something that I think possibly could be one of my favorite Good News Fridays.

General Jerry Boykin, Chuck Norris, and Delta Force

David:

Wait a minute. Tim, before you do that, let me insert something here. This weekend I was with General Jerry Boykin out in East Texas. I got to introduce him at an event out there. There was a couple of thousand cowboys crammed into this arena.

Tim:

And Jerry Boykin, that’s the guy that Chuck Norris plays in the movies, right?

David:

That’s the introduction I used out there!

Tim:

Is it really?

David:

Yeah, because General Jerry Boykin, three star general, I said, “€œGuys, you’ve all seen the movie Delta Force with Chuck Norris?”€ General Boykin, in real life, did what Chuck Norris acted in the movies. So, literally, he is an original Delta Force Warrior, thirteen years on Delta Force, He commanded Delta Force. All this great stuff he did, but–

Rick:

And a great guy and frequent guest here on the program. Had him on just a few weeks ago. Just a fabulous man.

David:

Here’s a three star general that some two years ago was not allowed to speak at the Pentagon because of his faith. Under the Obama administration, they said, “€œNo, no, no, no, no, you’re way too outspoken. Christian guys like you we don’t need at a prayer breakfast.”€ Amazingly enough. So, he is very strong his faith.

And by the way, he actually shared Christ with those guys out there and in doing, so there was about 40 of these cowboys that came to the Lord at that meeting. So, it was a really, really, good thing.

But I say that General Boykin because Scott Reicher out of San Diego, California sent me a note, he’s exactly right on this one. When we had Jerry Boykin on program the other day, I made the comment that Jerry stopped being a general under Obama. That’s not accurate. It was at the end of Bush’s administration.

And so, Scott, thank you for pointing that out. You’re exactly right. And nonetheless, Jerry Boykin is a great guy, a strong Christian believer, a three star general.

We”€™ve Needed the Swamp Drained For a While

Tim:

And it is worth noting too even, it’s kind of looking at the dynamics of leadership. Even as we talked in the last segment about how the economy is going the right direction.  Obama really did terrible things for the economy, but Bush really started to trend going the wrong direction. And even some of Bush’s leadership at the end, as Jerry Boykin would be a great example, some of the resistance even from the military for these guys and some of the things they had to deal with and go through. There’s just been a lot of politicians that have– we’ve just needed a swamp drained for a while.

Rick:

Yeah.

Tim:

Part of the good news we’ve talked about is seeing some of this swamp get drained. And so it hasn’t just been a label of party, right. It hasn’t been just the Democrats, there’s been some Republicans. But really, it’s just a philosophy and ideology that has been a problem. But yes, so we appreciate the correction because we certainly do want to present accurate things.

The Separation of Church and State

Tim:

And to that effect– So, I was pointing out this is possibly one of my favorite things that we’ve ever had a chance to talk about on Good News Friday. Just because I love the significance in the midst of the irony of what this is. Now this is data from the Pew Research Center. And, really, it”€™s kind of dealing with the notion of the separation of church and state.

But what they identified is that God, or the terms “€œdivine”€ or “€œAlmighty”€ is mentioned at least one time in every U.S. state constitution. Now, I love the irony of this because you have some very liberal states who are very anti God, any mention in government, “€œWell, you can’t– separation of church and state. You can’t do that.”€ But every single state constitution mentions God, or divine, or Almighty.

For example, the New York State Constitution reads, “€œWe the people of the state of New York, grateful to Almighty God for our freedom, in order to secure its blessings, do establish this Constitution.”€ Florida expresses being grateful to Almighty God. Ohio’s constitution says that all men have a natural and indefeasible right to worship Almighty God. And on it goes identifying this.

But this is great in the midst of of of having opposition to religion, to Christianity, to God. “€œYou can’t have God and government”€, people argue, “€œNo, there is a separation of church and state.”€ When you can go and point to every single state constitution and it mentions God Almighty, or prayer, or the divine. It really is a great irony in the midst of this debate. But also just some really fun good news as this article identifies how that God really has been a part of our nation and certainly is even in the state constitutions.

Rick:

Quick break guys. We’ll be right back with more of good news here on WallBuilders Live.

Share a veteran’s story

We Want To Hear Your Vet Story

Rick:

Hey friends! If you have been listening to WallBuilders Live for very long at all, you know how much we respect our veterans and how appreciative we are of the sacrifice they make to make our freedoms possible. One of the ways that we love to honor those veterans is to tell their stories here on WallBuilders Live.  Once in awhile, we get an opportunity to interview veterans that have served on those front lines that have made incredible sacrifices have amazing stories that we want to share with the American people.

One of the very special things we get to do is interview World War II veterans. You’ve heard those interviews here on WallBuilders Live, from folks that were in the Band of Brothers, to folks like Edgar Harrell that survived the Indianapolis to so many other great stories you heard on WallBuilders Live.

You have friends and family that also served.  If you have World War II veterans in your family that you would like to have their story shared here on WallBuilders Live, please e-mail us at [email protected].  Give us a brief summary of the story and we’ll set up an interview. Thanks so much for sharing here on WallBuilders Live!

Rick:

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live on this Good News Friday. David Barton is up next with some good news. David–

Heartwarming News

David:

I have some very good news that I consider to be very heart warming news. If people are aware of what happens with infants and babies, one of the big baby food companies is Gerber. And every year, they have the Gerber baby that goes on the front of their social media, and they advertise, and they have a traditional image they use of a baby that goes back decades and decades that you kind of associate with the Gerber baby. But in the last 8-10 years, they have started taking modern faces of kids. And so this year there were 140,000 entries into the Gerber baby contest and the–

Tim:

And there is an award for the winner, right? So–

David:

Fifty thousand dollar award.

Tim:

Right. So, as a contest– we don’t, my wife and I don”€™t have a kid yet. We would love to enter this contest for the fifty thousand dollar reward, right. This is a big deal.

David:

It’s a big deal.

Tim:

So, there’s a lot of people that are trying to compete to be able to win this prize in the midst of it all.

David:

And this year’s winner is a baby with Down’s Syndrome.

Rick:

Oh cool.

David:

One of the cutest images out there. But at a period in time where countries across the world are aborting babies that have Downs, or aborting preborn babies if they find Down’s. Here– this is such a pro-life, counter intuitive, counter cultural, message that they’re standing up for a life that many people would consider to be an inferior life.

Tim:

That is the ultimate of equality where we’re saying that all lives matter, that life is equal. This is really a positive message.

Rick:

Well, that’s a great way to end our segment on this Good News Friday. Because coming up next we’ve got a guest, a couple of guests, producers of a new movie that”€™s coming out called “€œI believe”€. Actually, I take that back, it’s already out and you can get it on Amazon right now. It’s number one in all of these categories and doing well. And so we’ve got the producer directors on the line.

They’re going to be with us when we come back from the break. Stay with us, you”€™re listening to WallBuilders Live.

Biographical Sketches

Hi friends! This is Tim Barton of WallBuilders. This is a time when most Americans don’t know much about American history or even heroes of the faith. I know, oftentimes as parents, we”€™re trying to find good content for our kids to read.

If you remember back in the Bible, the Book of Hebrews it has the Faith Hall of Fame, where they outlined the leaders of faith that had gone before them. Well, this is something that as Americans we really want to go back and outline some of these heroes not just of American history, but heroes of Christianity and our faith as well.

I wanted to let you know about some biographical sketches we have available on our website. One is called, “€œThe Courageous Leaders Collection“€ and this collection includes people like Abigail Adams, Abraham Lincoln, Francis Scott Key, George Washington Carver, Susanna Wesley, even the Wright brothers.

There’s a second collection called, “€œHeroes of History“€ in this collection you read about people like Benjamin Franklin, Christopher Columbus, Daniel Boone, George Washington, Harriet Tubman, the list goes on and on.

This is a great collection for your young person to have and read. And it’s a providential view of American and Christian history. This is available at WallBuilders.com.

Rick:

Thanks for staying with us here on WallBuilders Live. Our guests today are the producers and directors of a new movie you can get right now online at IBelieveThe Movie.com. You can find out more about it there. You can get it at Amazon. It is killing right now in the rankings – it’s number one in faith and spirituality in new releases.

New Family Film Out!

Rick:

Number two in faith and spirituality of all releases. Now, folks, that’s right behind War Room is number one and it’s even beating Facing the Giants, one of my favorites out there. So doing incredibly well and thrilled to have you guys with us. Jurgen and Stacey Peretzki with us – thanks so much for coming on guys.

Jurgen Peretzki:

Thanks for having us, Rick.

Stacey Peretzki:

Hi Rick, thank you very much. Appreciate it.

Rick:

You bet. Now this is not your first foray into films. You guys have done documentaries and films. This particular one, I believe, what gave you the idea for the movie?

Jurgen Peretzki:

I don’t know. Do you know the story about the film? Maybe I should tell you about the story a little bit.

Rick:

Watched it with my family. Absolutely, yeah.

Jurgen Peretzki:

So, it”€™s about a nine year old boy–

Rick:

The kid you”€™ve got in this thing, by the way, I thought the kid was fantastic. I don’t know where you found this guy.

Jurgen Peretzki:

Yeah, he was a godsend. He’s just a natural actor. It”€™s his first feature film and he did so beautifully.

Stacey Peretzki:

We had just auditioned him. He came in as simple as that.

Rick:

No kidding.

Stacey Peretzki:

Yeah, yeah.

It”€™s About a Nine Year Old Boy

Jurgen Peretzki:

And that story really is about him. He’s a nine year old boy and he has a supernatural encounter with God. And that experience sends him on an adventure and he wants to find out more about what Christians believe. Then obviously, there’s going to be some conflict, he faces opposition from his parents and from the teacher who don’t believe in God.

So, basically how we came up with it. We wanted to share the gospel with people, and people that might not want to go to church, but might watch a good movie. But people that maybe don’t know about what the gospel means and what a better vehicle than a nine year old boy? That innocency that is engaged with God, and has a relationship with God, and finds out about God, and in his innocence, tells his parents about it.

Rick:

And initially asks the same questions that most people would ask and he asks those questions. He”€™s not afraid to ask those questions. I loved that at the beginning as well. And then of course the childlike faith, and the miracles, and Tom Sizemore – how did you get Tom Sizemore? That was pretty cool.

Jurgen Peretzki:

Well, yeah.

Stacey Peretzki:

Through a friend and it was at the very end of the casting. That was really– that was one of our hardest parts to cast.

Rick:

No kidding.

Stacey Peretzki:

It was really hard for some reason because we had a lot of people come in and read for it and we were like, “€œNo, that”€™s not right. No, that”€™s not right.”€ Because we wanted to top notch acting of course. Because we really, really, wanted to do that being actors ourselves.

So, a friend of mine says, “€œI know him.”€ And we were like, “€œAre you kidding me?!”€ We said, “€œWell, send him over the script.”€ And sent him the script, he loved the script, and he said, “€œI’m in. I’m going to do it.”€ I mean, it was just like that.

Rick:

That”€™s awesome.

Jurgen Peretzki:

You know people like Jeremy London, Wilford Brimley, they’re all liked the script and they all come on board which was great.

It”€™s Continuing to Grow

Rick:

That’s cool, that’s cool. Well, you guys are are doing incredibly well right now. And even not just Amazon – you’re number one in religion spirituality at Wal-Mart. The movie is growing and we were even talking off air about the fact that usually a movie like this will hit, you”€™ll have some decent numbers, and it falls off. But you guys are continuing to grow and the audience is continuing to grow with not a huge marketing budget.

This isn’t a big studio project, so you don’t have the 20 million dollars to go spend a bunch of money on advertising. Very little right there on Facebook and boom this thing has taken off.

Stacey Peretzki:

Exactly. And I want to emphasize very little marketing budget. That’s why I think it’s just God–

Jurgen Peretzki:

Word of mouth really.

Rick:

Yeah.

Stacey Peretzki:

Word of mouth, through the small Facebook campaign that we have. And it”€™s just like it– it’s kind of like it’s just rippling in a pond – it”€™s growing bigger and bigger. People are talking about it, writing about it, they see the trailer first, they love it, then they watch the film, then they comment on the film. And it’s just been– we really feel very blessed and really happy that it’s resonating with people so well.

Rick:

So, for you guys as filmmakers when people are interested in watching a movie, and just thinking kind of on the marketing side of things to make things grow like this, what is the best thing for people that want to support you in something like this? Is Amazon the place to go buy because of the algorithm and it produces more numbers? What do you recommend? Because our listeners are active, so they’re going to hear this and go, “€œOkay, yes. Great movie, great message. I want to help support it not just by buying it, but helping it go viral.

Where to Get It?!

Jurgen Peretzki:

Yeah, Amazon is great because it has both. You can get the DVD, the physical DVD, from them and also digital – digital download or rental.

Rick:

Gotcha, gotcha. Alright, now–

Stacey Peretzki:

Wal-Mart is great too because Wal-Mart is huge, and everybody goes there, and you can also get it online at Wal-Mart.

Rick:

So, let me ask you guys a little bit bigger picture here just in terms of film industry and the importance of getting a good message out into the culture and influencing the culture positively. We talk a lot here on WallBuilders about the need to influence every area of the culture. And the whole kind of Hollywood media entertainment thing we ignored for decades. After Cecil B. DeMille there wasn’t a whole lot of positivity coming out of Hollywood on good values.

But the last 10, 12, 15 years that’s really been turning around and we’re seeing more and more people, just like yourself, using this medium to get a good message out there. How hard was that for you to do? It’s not easy to do this kind of thing. How hard was that for you guys to break through and be able to make a film like this and then be able to have this kind of success?

Jurgen Peretzki:

Well, film making in general is not for the faint of heart, let me tell you. It takes a lot of hard work and many years to get a project going and get it done.

Rick:

Yeah.

Jurgen Peretzki:

But then thankfully there are platforms now that where you can– you don’t need a big studio behind it in order to distribute it, in order to make people aware. Like Facebook has helped us a lot. Doing a Facebook campaign, making people aware of it, social media, spreading the word among Christians – it helps a lot.

Exciting Things Ahead

Rick:

Yeah, yeah. What’s next for you guys? Speaking of that doing projects, what’s coming up? Do you have anything you can tell us about or is it all secret until you can release it?

Jurgen Peretzki:

Well, actually, we might do a sequel to this – I believe 2. We’re thinking about it, we’re working on it. God willing it’s going to happen. But right now we have to be focusing on this movie on I believe because it did so well, people are responding so well to it, we might put it in theaters. It’s a little bit unorthodox because normally you come out in theaters first, right. But we might actually do the opposite now that it’s gaining legs and people are hearing about it.

Stacey Peretzki:

Right, because the overwhelmingly positive response to the movie, it’s just so different. It didn’t come out in theaters, then the big bang, and then it kind of fizzles out. This is like the opposite. It’s kind of started out with not– just the small campaign we’re doing and it’s just growing bigger, and bigger, and bigger.

So we’re really just praying about doing I Believe 2 and probably will. And then we are also doing an apocalyptic movie after that.

Rick:

Whoa, an apocalyptic movie. Now you’re teasing us!

Stacey Peretzki:

Yeah, that”€™s what we”€™re doing, Rick.

Rick:

So you already have a script that you guys have in mind? Or are you just thinking genre there?

Jurgen Peretzki:

Well, we are thinking about it, but that”€™s something down the road.

Stacey Peretzki:

Yeah.

Rick:

Yeah, yeah.

Stacey Peretzki:

That’s kind of like what you said earlier, secretive.

Rick:

Yeah, I got you. I got you. Well, it’s exciting. Well, we wish you the best on the next one as well and continued success on I believe. We’re going to links today at WallBuildersLive.com, so the folks can get over to that Amazon link to see I believe as well. Jurgen and Stacy, God bless you guys. Keep up the great work.

Stacey Peretzki:

God bless you, Rick, and thank you so much. We really appreciate it.

Jurgen Peretzki:

Yeah. Thanks for having us. Have a good one.
