Faith and the Culture

Rick:

Welcome to the intersection of faith and the culture. It’s WallBuilders Live, David Barton and Tim Barton are normally with us, they’re not going to be here today. I’m Rick Green, I’m not going to be here for much longer, because today’s program is actually a special presentation from the ProFamily Legislators Conference and we’re headed straight back there to pick up where we left off with yesterday’s radio program.

Now if you missed WallBuilders Live yesterday, it’s available right now at our website, wallbuilderslive.com. You can hear yesterday’s program which was the beginning of this presentation from George Barna, prolific author and probably the best, not probably, he’s the most quoted and the best pollster and surveyoist if that’s a word out there on the planet today and we love him because he’s got good biblical worldview and he helps give us perspective on what’s happening in the culture and how to address these issues.

It’s an eyes wide open situation, he identifies the problems, but then helps to give us the solutions as well. We’re picking up right where we left off yesterday. If you missed it yesterday, get it on the website today. Here’s George Barna at the Profamily Legislators Conference.

George:

The more that we can have intact families, the more likely we are to have young minds that are capable of embracing a biblical worldview. Thirdly, that we also have to keep track of what’s going on with our kids during the days and to a large extent that means they’re in some kind of educational process, some kind of formal schooling environment.

Secular Worldview Pushed in Schools

And what we know is that most of our schools are educating our children to have anything but a biblical worldview. Now on the one hand, we know that most Americans are dissatisfied with the public schools. We know that 6 out of 10 of them don’t like the values and the views that are being taught. We know that 6 out of 10 of them say the quality is substandard. We know that more than 8 out of 10 of them say they’d like us to see both the quality and the content of what’s being provided to young people in the public schools.

There’s only one problem with that and that’s that 6 out of 10 young people in America today are in public schools. And so they are being fed things, they’re being indoctrinated in ways that continue to move them away from rather than closer to a biblical worldview. We’ve got about 1 out of every 8 students in America, 12% who are not in public schools. They’re either in an alleged schools, they’re in private non-religious schools or they’re engaged in homeschooling. When we look at that 12% and break it out, only one quarter of that 12%, just 3% of the total population of school children in America today is in a schooling environment where they are consistently exposed to biblical worldview thinking and training.

Now you think about that, only 3%. Remember, earlier we looked at the generations, we went 99, 74, looks to me like we’re headed toward 2 or 3 unless we step in and say no, we got to do something significantly different there. That’s family, those are something.

Most Americans Want Limited Government

By the way, this is part of a much longer presentation where I had about ten things you can do in each of these areas. I’ve only got a limited scope of time here, so I’m trying to give you some highlights just a few things. So that’s it for family, three things you can do there. Let’s look at government, four things you can do here.

One is to recognize and be a champion of government budding out of the system. Okay. Why would I suggest that in a day and age such as this? Because when you dig down, you find out that’s actually what Americans want. 7 out of 10 Americans and we phrase it in all kinds of ways, there are some very simplistic ways you can phrase it where it looks like people want more government. But when you dig beneath what people have said in response to those kinds of indicators, you find that’s not really what they were thinking.

What we find is that people are saying they want to be happy for better or worse, but they recognize at least that happiness requires personal liberty which requires limited government. They know that history shows that the larger the government, the worse off you are. They know that government is best when it’s simple and gets out of the way. They know that the government as, I believe it was President Reagan said, a government big enough to give you everything you want it’s also big enough to take away everything you have. 7 out of 10 Americans understand that. People are not stupid. Sometimes they act it, but they are not stupid.

Socialism

We know that by a five to two margin, they say they would prefer to have limited government to a bigger larger more powerful government. Interestingly, this whole issue about socialism, I think maybe it was two years ago I came here and talked about our research about the rising number of people who want America to turn socialist and we were up in the 40s at that point. I’ve seen in the last 18 months or so it’s begun to die down. Do you know why? Because God gave us a gift. God gave us AOC, God gave us Elizabeth Warren and God wouldn’t let Bernie Sanders die. Okay. Heart attack or no heart attack, he’s still talking.

And what’s happening now is Americans who two years ago heard this idea of wow everything can be free, I could get all this stuff, why wouldn’t I want that? I work hard, I’ve made a lot of taxes, I deserve it. That’s part of the worldview: I deserve everything, entitlement mentality.

And what we’re finding now is as Senator Warren comes out with her $52 trillion boondoggle and that’s just the first of many that I’m sure she’s got up her sleeve and AOC talks utter nonsense and Bernie Sanders is all befuddled about the fact that not only are people trying to steal his thunder but he’s not sure what the thunder is, I mean you know we look at all that and people are saying, yeah, I don’t think that’s the right deal for us. And, of course, as I showed you two years ago, again when you dig down beneath just some of the catch words and you get at what people are actually looking for in their life, how they want government to serve them, they’re not looking for socialism.

The Wrong Morality

It turns out that’s the last thing they want. Right now by a 2:1 margin, Americans are veering back to capitalism. So we’ve got all of this, we need government to butt out. You have to be a defender of that position.

You know a lot of times Republicans, excuse me but a lot of times Republicans will get into office, suddenly the budgets go up, the programs expand and they’re great ideas maybe but it’s not the way to do it. So you’ve got to defend this idea of ridding us of government interference. Secondly, recognize that the government and you know this better than anybody, all you do every day is legislate morality. And the problem that we’ve got is, it’s the wrong morality. When you look at what government tells us, is morality, it’s wrong, wrong, wrong and wrong time after time. You say well that doesn’t really matter, we got parents. No, remember we really don’t. Well, we got the schools. No, we really don’t. Okay, well we’ve got churches. No, we really don’t and I’m going to show you that in a minute.

But the reason why this is so important is because kids who are the ones who are developing their worldview are looking for cues, they’re looking for clues to what’s right and what’s wrong. And so they’ll get lessons in the classroom, they’ll get spanked by their parents, different things will happen around them that give them some of those clues. But you know what, when they’re told to obey the law, if they’re one of those old-fashioned homes, you know, this is the law that they’re told to obey. And so this slight of how to live sends more clues to our kids. So it impacts their worldview.

George:

You as legislators are impacting the worldview of millions and millions of people. We’ve got to be real careful about the messages that we’re sending to people about what is right or wrong, that’s all morality is and that’s all you do is try to determine through the laws that you put through, what is right or wrong.

Third thing I’d suggest is that as a legislator, not only are you bound to do it, but it’s in the best interest of everybody if you actually follow the US Constitution and therein lies a problem or right now I just got back the data tables, the marginals for the data tables last night with a national study that we’ve done with state legislators, looking at their views of the Constitution. So I don’t have the data crosstab, I don’t have the data, you know, really prepared to present but I couldn’t help myself, so I looked at some of it. And if you heard a party last night up in room 829, that’s what that was, okay, there was new data to be had.

Legislators Do Not Know the Constitution

So these are some of the things that we found among the state legislators across the country. 4 out of 10 of them do not believe or know that the Constitution is the supreme law of the land that it’s the absolute legal standard and that it cannot be violated or overruled by other government leaders. They think that power resides in their hands and minds.

Now, there are some other things here, there’s another fascinating one that I found also, which is that 1 out of 4 current legislators, state legislators do not realize that constitutional amendments can be proposed by either the Congress or by the States. They don’t know that. I mean it blows my mind that there are only two groups of people that can actually propose the amendments, State legislators are one of them and they don’t know it. Wow! Just imagine all the other less obvious things that they don’t know or understand about the Constitution.

So I’m encouraging you if you haven’t read through the Constitution in a while, do it, go away for a weekend, read, it’s not that long. You know, you could probably even fit it in commercial breaks between the sporting event, you know, but I mean get to it.

Next thing I’d say is that it’s helpful for you because you people are educators through your campaigns and all the advertising and PR stuff you do through your work as legislators, all the information you get out to people, through your newsletters, through your public appearances, through the media, I mean you’ve got a lot of interaction with the public.

God’s Call

And I’m asking you to encourage Americans to have a higher standards for who they elect, not higher than you, but higher than the people who voters at bet aren’t really leaders because they don’t have a compelling vision for the future of America.

Americans, 7 out of 10 Americans will say that most government leaders do not have a compelling vision for the future of America. I’ve worked with developing a lot of leaders over the years and we always start for well, first of all, we start with God’s calling. But once we’ve identified that God has actually called you to this and it’s not just a job, an occupation, an open seat, you know something that will give you publicity, but it’s really God’s calling and purpose for your life, what’s the first thing you have to demonstrate as a leader? That God has given you a unique and compelling vision for the people that he’s called you to lead.

Now if you come up here and tell me your vision for what you want to do for God, I don’t really give a rip. If you want to come up here and tell me your vision for how you can use your skills, your education, your contacts and your resources to make great things happen, I don’t really give a rip. What I want to know is that you’ve spent enough time on your knees before God begging him to divulge to you why are you giving me this opportunity and then taking what God has given to you as his unique vision for that group of people, in your case your district. Why does he want you there?

What Can Churches Do?

Americans are not deeply spiritual people. They don’t know what this means. Let me tell you what it means. It means that they sense that these people are not there because God put them there and because God did not put them there, he has not wasted his vision on those people. So we need his people in place, you’re probably among them. I’m asking you to try to see if we get others there. You see and in order to do that, we know that people don’t like the people who are there because they said they’re not leaders, they don’t have vision, then why to the tune of about 9 out of 10 times do we put them back in office? We’ve got to help them rethink the process and rather than take the easy route, do what’s right. Let’s talk about churches, five things churches can do. I’ve only got a couple minutes, I am going to fly through this.

Okay, number one, very much like our political scene, people in our churches must insist that their pastors are leaders. And you say, well of course, they are not. Why would you say that, George? Because I asked them. They told me.

Do you know that most senior pastors in America will just tell you, no, God didn’t make me to be a leader, he made me be a teacher. God made me to be a preacher. God made me to be a counselor. God made me to be or whatever. And there’s no reason to put that down, that’s a great and wonderful thing.

Pastors Masquerading as Leaders

Whatever God made you and called you to be, do it, that’s why you’re on the planet. We need it in the kingdom. But what we don’t need are teachers and leaders and counselors pretending to be leaders so that they can get the platform to do what they think they’ve been called to do.

So, you know, we know that because we have pastors masquerading as leaders through no fault of their own in many cases, because it’s the only way that they get the opportunity to use their calling to teach or preach or counsel or whatever it may be, we have a model that doesn’t allow them to do that otherwise. Much larger discussion.

But secondly, we know that less than 1 out of every 4 senior pastors tell us that by calling and by gifting, they are actually leaders. And we can verify that by the fact that less than half of those people actually have God’s vision for the ministry of the church that they’ve been called to lead. Where they lead them, they’re leading for their vision. Who gives them rip what their vision is? Same thing as with a public official, it’s got to be God’s vision. We’ve got to be focused on him and his ways.

Secondly, our churches have to teach the full counsel of God. Love to spend a lot of time on this, don’t have the time. But the reality is that when we interviewed theologically conservative pastors across the country and by that I mean these are people who believe the Bible is God’s Word, it is trustworthy, it is their job to make sure that people buy into it.

The Bible Speaks to Today’s Issues

With that particular group of people, more than 9 out of 10 of them say that when we gave them a list of 13 public issues that the Bible speaks to all 13 issues. When we asked them are you going to help your people understand what the Bible says about those 13 issues? The answer by and large was no, no.

See and that’s in spite of the fact that as it says up there 2 out of 3 people in their congregations were saying I’m dying for my pastor to tell me what the Bible teaches on these issues. I don’t care who he or she is voting for, what I care about is what did God say about immigration, about poverty, about crime, about housing, about whatever the issues may be, they want to know. And so you know we’ve got that problem at the same time that we’ve got pastors who are saying, oh and by the way, we’re doing an excellent job of developing people’s worldview. More than 4 out of 5 of them believe that they’re doing a super job of developing people’s worldview. Most of those pastors say a majority of the people in my congregation have a biblical worldview. Great. Couldn’t wait to get there and check it out.

We went to these places, checked it out, we found that less than 1 out of 5 people in those congregations had a biblical worldview. Is that better than the average across the country? Yeah, so…

Bring A Speaker To Your Area

Tim:

Hey, this is Tim Barton with WallBuilders.  And, as you’ve had the opportunity to listen to WallBuilders Live, you’ve probably heard a wealth of information about our nation, about our spiritual heritage, about the religious liberties, and about all the things that make America exceptional.

And, you might be thinking, “As incredible as this information is, I wish there was a way that I could get one of the WallBuilders guys to come to my area and share with my group.”

Whether it be a church, whether it be a Christian school, or public school, or some political event, or activity, if you’re interested in having a WallBuilders speaker come to your area, you can get on our website at www.WallBuilders.com and there’s a tab for scheduling. If you’ll click on that tab, you’ll notice there’s a list of information from speakers bio’s, to events that are already going on. And, there’s a section where you can request an event, to bring this information about who we are, where we came from, our religious liberties, and freedoms. Go to the WallBuilders website and bring a speaker to your area.

Worldview Development And Children

George:

The problem that we’ve got is that not only aren’t we adequately focused on worldview development, we’re not focused on children. Remember, I said before it’s before the age of 13 that your worldview develops. Why isn’t it then that our churches are putting all or at least most of their resources into ministering to children? I tell this to pastors all the time, I know there are a few pastors in here, forgive me but you’re wasting your time with adults. You want to make a difference in lives, minister to children, get adults to minister to children. Do something in the community with children. This is where you’re going to have your impact and so that when they’re adults, you don’t have to worry about them anymore.

We need to focus on the whole idea of transformation and transformation being that journey that leads us to die to sin and self and society in order to more fully and profoundly love God and people. And again a lot of information there, the bottom line is that most Christians don’t know what transformation is, don’t know that call, who that God has called them to be transformed people. They’ve never had the kind of training, disciplining, education that they need to become real disciples or real transform lives.

Why Does The Church lack Influence?

They don’t know what it means to cooperate with God in that process. And so consequently, when we look at the profile of where Americans are at on that 10 stop journey to wholeness, what we find is only 3% of Americans have reached the place where they’re either broken of sin and/or they’ve surrendered their life to God and/or they’re submitting to his agenda rather their own and/or they love God in a profound deep intimate way that less than 1% of Americans do today and love people in that same way.

Why doesn’t the church have power in America? Because we haven’t been broken of sin, self and society. 3% of us have. The rest of us put on a really good face. We try hard, we do a lot of stuff, but we haven’t really done what Christ asked us to do in order to become more like him. So when we look at all of this, I want you to realize we do not have political crisis in America, we do not have an economic crisis in America, we don’t have an immigration or a health care crisis in America, what we have is a spiritual transformation crisis. And the way of addressing that spiritual transformation crisis is by developing people’s worldview so that they embrace a biblical worldview. And of course, in order to do that we’re going to have to make children are number one ministry priority.

How Churches Measure Success

Why don’t churches deal with biblical worldview stuff? Why don’t churches get the job of discipling people done? Why aren’t churches raising up transform disciples? Because of their measure of success. Much larger talk, I’m going to go in, just give me 30 seconds. And the issue is you get what you measure, you get what you measure. And so what I found in our research is that this is what churches measure across the country. How many people show up? How much money they raise? How many staff they’ve hired? How many programs they offer in the square footage they built out? And there’s an expression they use, we are a, quote/unquote, growing and healthy church. When these numbers are bigger today than they were 53 weeks ago and so they think they’re doing just well.

But here’s the deal about measurement, you get what you measure. When you measure attendance, what do you get? A megachurch because what you’re saying is size is what matters, all that matters is that we get bigger. When you measure dollars, what you get? Solvency but you don’t necessarily get anything about ministry impact. When you measure the number of staff you’ve hired, what do you get? Coverage. But you don’t get effectiveness. When you measure the number of programs, what you’re doing is you’re giving people choices and options that helps with your size because people today want choices and options. I can see how this works. Unfortunately, it’s all wrong because you’re not actually looking at spiritual maturity, which is why the churches they are in the first place.

The True Standard

You know, when you measure square footage, what you’re doing is you’re checking out how much capacities did you have. Do we have to do more stuff? And that’s great except it has nothing to do with changed lives. See, these are wonderful measures on the measurement, I love measuring stuff, it’s fun, but you get what you measure. You got to measure the right stuff. Jesus didn’t die for any of these things.

And so if he didn’t die for it, we ought not be measuring it and thinking that it’s significant. What we might want to consider is looking at what he tells us matters a person’s worldview which is then going to infiltrate every part of their life, their behavior, their thought life, their relationships, their outreach, everything. Whether or not they’ve been broken of sin, self and society, what are they surrendering and submitted? Do they have a sense of joyful obedience in the face of persecution and hardship? Because he promised us that if we do the real deal, that’s what we’re going to face. You know aren’t we bearing spiritual truth because back in John 15:8, he said, you are my disciples, when, you come to church every week? No. When you bear fruit. So why don’t we measure the fruit that’s coming out of these broken lives who’ve surrendered themselves to the purposes and ways of Christ?

So I’m done. You can’t do everything. I put a lot up there and I’ve got a lot more I could have given you. There’s so much that needs to be done.

You can’t do everything, but you can do something and I know you’re trying, you’re trying your best. I’m asking to go home and rethink are you doing what really matters knowing that typically what we’re doing through all of our work, your work, my work for years, I mean we missed the boat. It’s all about getting people to adopt a biblical worldview as that operating unit in their life. And I’m praying that you will do that. Thank you so much for listening. Thanks for your patience.
