Faith And The Culture

Rick:

Welcome to the intersection of faith and the culture. This is WallBuilders Live! Where we’re talking about today’s hottest topics on policy, faith, and the culture, always doing that from a Biblical, historical, and Constitutional perspective.

We’re here with David Barton, America’s premier historian and the founder of WallBuilders. Also, Tim Barton, national speaker and President of WallBuilders, and my name is Rick Green, I’m a former Texas state legislator, national speaker, and author.  We are thrilled that you’re joining us on a Friday, because it’s Good News Friday. We’re gonna dive into a lot of the good things that have been happening around the country. David and Tim compiled these stories that the major media just ignores, and on Fridays we get a chance to fire through a ton of them we’re going to get to as many as we possibly can today.

Alright, David, Tim, let’s jump into that good news. David has got our first piece of good news.

David:

I’m going to go to Colorado and in Colorado they have passed what’s called a red flag law.

Red Flag Law allows a judge to look at you and say, “You know, Rick, you look like you’re really angry. I’m wanting to issue an order to take all your guns away in case you do something stupid in your house, or in the community, or in a theater somewhere, or in a church.”

So red flag law allows a judge or some other official to issue an order to take your guns away.

Colorado Sheriffs Stand Against Unconstitutional Law

Tim:

And by the way guys, this is one of those laws that seems like a really good hearted law. We want to be able to stop crazy people from having guns and doing crazy things, this seems like a really good hearted law. It just is so subjective when it comes to how we determine who is crazy and who is not crazy.

If you have several liberal family members and they think you’re crazy because you supported Donald Trump, the judge says, “Oh yeah. Have you supported Trump? You’re definitely crazy you shouldn’t have guns.”

How we determine crazy has now become very subjective, and that’s one of the reasons this is so dangerous. So even though the heart of this law could be good, we don’t want crazy people mentally unstable people having guns doing bad things. I agree with that notion too. But the follow through and the execution is very very bad.

David:

You’ve got a constitutional amendment that guarantees your right to keep and bear arms, and you have to really violate that to do it, and you can’t violate that.

I mean, that’s why if you’re tried by a jury of your peers and you’re found to be guilty, you lose all sorts of rights, the right to vote among other things as well. There is a process by which that can be done.

Kentucky Becomes 16th State to Allow Firearms Carry Without a Permit

As Tim said, that’s no longer subjective. It’s not what one judge thinks, or what you think when you ask a judge, or what a prosecutor asked a judge to do. But what’s really cool is, in Colorado, more than half the sheriffs representing the counties there have said, “We’re not going to enforce that law. That goes way past what the Constitution permits, and we as sheriffs are not going to enforce that.”

And I’ve got to tell you I am really, really, really pleased with the direction of so many sheriffs going in America. They’re becoming the great advocates for the Constitution, not only in this, but in other areas.

If there were ever a situation where the government got crazy and came after the people, I think the sheriffs would be the first line of defense that people have, because you can go after people, and your leaders told you, “They’re crazy. Take them down.”

But when you start being a military guy and you’re being told to go after the sheriffs, I know that that’s a whole different thing.

Right now there are several areas in which sheriffs have stood up very strongly across the nation, and I think they’ll be a first line of constitutional defense, which is really really cool.

And by the way, go in an opposite direction of Colorado.

We have that Kentucky becomes the 16th state to have permit less gun carry. In other words, you don’t have to have a permit to carry a gun. So that’s what some people call “constitutional carry”.

The Constitution says you can, nobody has to license you do that, but that’s 16 states now headed the other section.

Don’t Just Get a Gun, Learn How to Use It as Well

Tim:

Well let me point out also, as we are encouraged to see states promoting the constitutional right of people being able to carry guns, all of us also would strongly advocate that anybody that has a gun, go get training for how to use your weapon. This is not just, “We want everybody to have a gun all the time when they don’t know how to properly use the firearm, and they don’t know proper safety and discipline.”

This is something that you and your family, throughout the year, are going out to train. We even invite people to come with us at times.

But you go and do firearms training throughout the year. My dad and I try to make it out when we can and do this as well.

We have several former military special ops guys that we go and do training and shooting with, we are constantly trying to get even better and have more discipline when it comes to the use of firearms. But as much as we celebrate these constitutional wins when it comes to the Second Amendment, we also strongly advocate for anybody that has a firearm, or even if you don’t have a firearm, go take some gun instruction classes. Learn how it works, and maybe then it won’t be scary and you might think, “Hey, I know how to use this. I don’t mind getting one.”

We love for people to be able to have firearms to protect themselves and their family, to enjoy the sport of shooting, but definitely we encourage training.

“If You Get Robbed in Your Home, It’s Your Own Fault”

Rick:

You know Tim, you hit such a good point. A lot of the folks on the left that do not like constitutional carry, or even permitted carry in states, it’s because of a fear that people that don’t know how to use weapons will just be carrying them around to feel tough, or whatever, and then you have a shootout and people that shouldn’t have been shooting are shooting.

I have to say, that’s a legitimate concern they have. They have that fear for a good reason, not that it happens a lot, but that theoretically it could happen a lot. So you’re 100 percent right. While we absolutely advocate for the freedom of people to carry, we strongly advocate that you should get training, and not only are we on this program, advocates of the right to carry, we also bring out the founders quotes where they said you have a responsibility to defend your family.

So if you, as James Wilson said, “If you get robbed in your home, it’s your own fault for negligence.”

So this is a responsibility. We do challenge people to get that training. I’m so glad you raised this, because while we are strong champions of the Second Amendment, and we also want people to be responsible, so we get that training.

And by the way, if you’re a WallBuilders Live supporter, if you donate in any way to support WallBuilders Live, we want to give you a chance to go with us for free as a thank you for supporting this program, because when you support us and you donate to WallBuilders Live, you’re actually advocating for the entire Constitution, because that’s what we do all day around here and all throughout the week.

Moment From American History

This is Tim Barton from WallBuilders with another moment from American history. Founding Fathers John Adams and Thomas Jefferson originally worked closely together but later became ardent opponents.

This troubled Dr. Benjamin Rush, a signer of the declaration, who knew both of them very well. In the Bible, second Corinthians 5:18 tells us that God has given each of us the ministry of reconciliation. Dr Rush believed this and set out to bring the two back together.

It took a while, but Adams and Jefferson once again became close friends. Looking back on his role in helping bring about this reconciliation Dr. Rush stated, “It will give me pleasure as long as I live to reflect that. I have been in any degree instrumental in effecting this reunion of two souls destined to be dear to each other and motivated with the same dispositions to serve their country, though in different ways.”

Good News from Illinois

Rick:

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live! It is Good News Friday! We’re looking forward to more good news throughout the program. Tim’s up next.

Tim:

This one is from Illinois, and actually deals with guns. Now, this is Good News Friday, so I mean it’s good news coming out of Illinois. Generally Illinois is a super blue state. So generally we think of Chicago, and we don’t think of positive gun things from Illinois because of Chicago.

Well one of the weird things that some individuals in Illinois decided would be a good idea, is that they wanted to ban stun guns because they said, “This is another one of those safety concern issues. We can’t trust people with stun guns.”

So already there’s crazy restrictions on guns in Illinois on a lot of levels. Chicago is a prime example. And for anybody listening in Illinois, we understand not everybody in Illinois is as crazy as some of the people in Chicago.

There are some great people—we actually have many friends in Illinois, and many of them that are carrying guns probably even as they’re listening, they’ve been trained. They’ve gone through some of this process. Anyway, Illinois decided it’—

Rick:

Do not forget we got we got President Reagan from Dixon, Illinois, right?

So yeah, we got we’ve got to give Illinois its props.

Tim:

So some positive things, like Lincoln, there have been some good people from Illinois. So the Illinois Supreme Court ruled, unanimously, that the state ban on carrying stun guns in public, or in a vehicle, violates the Second Amendment. They struck down the ban on stun guns.

Supreme Court of Illinois Repeals Stun Gun Ban

Now, it certainly to me that is a very positive thing that the Supreme Court of Illinois is recognizing that there are limitations. You just can’t ban everything. There is a Second Amendment, and we’re going to we’re going to uphold and defend that.

It just even strikes me, how crazy is this that we’re saying, “Anywhere in the states you can’t have a stun gun. You can’t have one in your car.”

When you’re already telling people in many places this day that you cannot have a firearm. So you have these single women, or you have moms, or whatever the situation is, maybe even dads with a family, and you can’t have a firearm, but now you could even have a stun gun? So how are you supposed to protect and defend yourself against the bad guys?

This is where some of some of the arguments, and what would seem to be the, quote, “logic” of the left is not very logical in the reality of life situations. This is why guys, we talked about a little bit in the first segment, we are advocates of the Second Amendment because we understand the benefit when people, who have been properly trained as we talked about, are responsible with firearms, the benefit that produces, and how—Rick, even as you mentioned, the James Wilson quote, where James Wilson said, “You’re you’re the king of your castle you’re responsible for protecting your own home,” or maybe family in this situation. The Second Amendment really is what enables us to be able to legally do that in America.

Why Stun Guns?

David:

And it’s amazing that what you’re looking at with the law was you take essentially what is a very non-lethal form of self-defense. I’ve heard of one or 2 occasions in 30 years where that with a stun gun it initiate a heart attack or something.

Tim:

And there’s probably been more than two, in fairness. But right. This is not this is not that common or that prevalent. At least, certainly not compared to other means of self-defense. This certainly is a less lethal way of trying to stop a bad person wanting to do you harm, and to say that you can’t defend yourself even with this almost non-lethal way.

David:

That’s that’s craziness. But man I would not have expected a unanimous decision out of the Illinois Supreme Court. That’s really great. That really is good news.

Rick:

And guys, just also following up on our last segment, we want to make sure we say all the responsible gun owners out there, and most of them do get training—or want to get training and want to be responsible—a lot of people who get licenses don’t carry because they know they’re not ready, and they wait until they get the training to be ready.

So I didn’t want people to think we were disparaging those folks that really do want to want to be responsible in the last segment, that’s a big part of what we do, is to help get them prepared.

So, good news out of Illinois, so much good news from across the country. We’ve got more for you when we come back from break. Stay with us. You’re listening to WalllBuilders Live.

Share a veteran’s story

We Want To Hear Your Vet Story

Rick:

Hey friends! If you have been listening to WallBuilders Live for very long at all, you know how much we respect our veterans and how appreciative we are of the sacrifice they make to make our freedoms possible. One of the ways that we love to honor those veterans is to tell their stories here on WallBuilders Live.  Once in awhile, we get an opportunity to interview veterans that have served on those front lines that have made incredible sacrifices have amazing stories that we want to share with the American people.

One of the very special things we get to do is interview World War II veterans. You’ve heard those interviews here on WallBuilders Live, from folks that were in the Band of Brothers, to folks like Edgar Harrell that survived the Indianapolis to so many other great stories you heard on WallBuilders Live.

You have friends and family that also served.  If you have World War II veterans in your family that you would like to have their story shared here on WallBuilders Live, please e-mail us at [email protected]  Give us a brief summary of the story and we’ll set up an interview. Thanks so much for sharing here on WallBuilders Live!

Americans Want More Religion in Public Life

Rick:

We’re back here with WallBuilders Live. Good News Friday today, and David Barton’s got the next piece of good news.

David:

Well, with what we’ve seen on polling and the state of religion in America over recent years, we know that faith has been declining, we know that church attendance is going down, we know the number of professing Christians is going down, we know that things are falling very, very rapidly.

Twelve years ago the percentage of Americans who said they were born again Christians was at 45%. Today it’s at 34%.

So essentially, in just a dozen years, you’ve seen fourteen point drop. The loss of religion in America’s definitely increasing. So the question becomes, since the nation is moving in a more secular direction, are they happy or not happy with this more secular direction the nation is moving?

And surprisingly, the answer is they’re not happy with a more secular nation. This is not a poll I thought I would see anytime soon. It says, “Half of Americans want religion to play a more important role in the U.S.”

Stand Up Even if You Are Attacked

That, by itself, is massive. This doesn’t mean it’s religious people saying this, it’s a lot of non-religious people saying they want to see a bigger role for religion in America. Now, I will say that, for a lot of religious faith, we’ve kind of just because of the way social media is and the way our friends are and the way that people pop off with their mouth and comments we’ve kind of gotten good at hiding our light under a basket, which actually Jesus told us not to do that, and Matthew that we shouldn’t do that. But the culture is kind of beat us and submission, and this silence, and so we don’t speak out on a lot of issues that the Bible speaks out on.

And we just kind of. And in many ways statistically we’ve kind of disappeared in America. That voice is there.

Good news, everybody, people want more of your voice. Now, if you speak out you’ll probably get attacked, and they’re going to beat on you. But that’s the loud mouths, and just get used to that. Jesus had that, everybody’s had that, every generation, if you were against racism, you’ve been beat up. Didn’t matter.

If you stand for something, you’re going to get beat up. But the nation really wants more of that, which I think is a really good deal. It was interesting that they took this poll, and they extended it across global areas.

“What do other nations think about religion?”

Of the 27 nations they investigated, there were only five nations of the 27 that did not want more religion in public life.

Any idea what those nations would be?

Of 27 Nations, Only 5 Don’t Want More Religion

Rick:

That did not want more religion in public life?

David:

Five nations.

Tim:

Now, are we talking about like the nations from the U.N.?

Rick:

I would think maybe an Arab nation.

David:

They were U.N. nations.

Tim:

Okay, so maybe North Korea?

David:

No. They didn’t check communist nations. They did not go to the high persecution nations, didn’t go to China, didn’t go to Korea, didn’t go to Vietnam.

Rick:

What about Middle East nations where Islam is prevelent?

David:

Mainly the industrial nations of the world.

tim:

So I would think, then, European nations.

David:

Right.

Tim:

UK?

David:

Not UK. UK actually wanted more religion.

Tim:

Well, they’re struggling, so it would make sense because they need help. They’re hiding it so.

So, Germany, France, Italy, many places where you see secularism on the rise and it doesn’t seem like they’re looking for something.

David:

You take Sweden, you take France, you take the Netherlands, you take Spain, and you take Germany. That’s where they want less religion. But if you go to Great Britain, if you go to Poland, if you go to Italy, to Greece, to Hungary, you go to Russia, if you go to Australia, they go to South Korea, if you go to all these other nations on the list, it’s 27 nations, they overwhelmingly want more religion in public life.

America’s got one of the biggest margins that wants more Religion in public life. So that’s really good.

By the way, maybe that goes with another story I saw. This looks like a state of giving in 2018.

A Call for the Church to Arise

So we’re in 2019 now, they’re looking back to the state of giving in 2018, and they found that the increase in contributions to evangelical churches soared in this most recent state giving people, or giving more to evangelical churches over the recent decade or so. It’s been about 3.5 % average increase per year and it’s up to 6%.

So that’s a pretty significant jump, statistically. That’s about a 75 or 80 percent jump increase in giving last year. And so that’s significant. So there is another indication that maybe people are wanting evangelicals to get out there, and exert a little more influence, and bring the culture back in a good direction, which again, we’ve kind of abandoned in recent years. So maybe this is a call to action to get us back into motion and get faith back in public life?

Rick:

Hey guys, just to ask you this question, I know we go to break, but I mean isn’t that what Salt and Light is? It’s not just sharing the Gospel, it’s actually influencing the culture, bringing out the flavor, preserving the culture. So really what people are saying is, “Please, church, be the salt and light you’re called to be!”

David:

Well yeah. I think that they’re really saying, “Hey guys, we see the nation going more secular, and we’re secular, but we don’t like the direction is going. We need you guys to get back in this thing. We really like it better the way it was before all this stuff happened,” and I think that that’s a pretty good, clear call now on our part.

No Excuse to Not Share our Faith

There was no excuse for it first off, not being strong and sharing our faith. Right now we know that nearly 70 percent of Americans do not share their faith with others. That’s inexcusable from a biblical perspective, because we’re told to share our faith regardless of what the cost is.

So in some ways I think the church has put convenience out, and when I say church, I mean individual believers. Those who would profess to be Christians. I think they put their own comfort and convenience—and I don’t like being criticized, I don’t like people yelling at me, and I don’t like people getting angry at me. I think they put that above the mandate they have from the Lord to share the faith. Even the secular world is saying, “Hey, we really did like culture better when you guys were around doing stuff. I know we may have been part of beating you up, but we really liked the results we got.”

And I think that’s a great call for us to be salt and light, which is what Jesus told us to be, and now the world is saying, “Hey guys, we need you to be salt and light.”

I think that that really is good news.

Rick:

Yeah absolutely. Quick break guys. We got one more piece of good news when we come back. Stay with us folks, you’re listening to WallBuilders Live.

Moment From American History

This is Tim Barton from WallBuilders with another moment from American history.

The Reverend James Caldwell was a famous minister during the American War for Independence. His sermons taught liberty and God’s opposition to tyranny.

The British hated him and tried to kill him. So, for his own protection he would actually take loaded pistols with him into the pulpit and lay them beside his Bible as he preached. In the 1780 Battle of Springfield, the Americans ran out of wadding for their guns which was like having no ammunition.

Pastor Caldwell ran inside a nearby church and returned with an armload of Watt Hymnals, the pages of which would provide the much needed wadding. He took this great Bible based hymnal, raised in the air, and shouted to the troops,”Now put to watts into them, boys!”  This pastor’s ingenuity saved the day for the Americans.

Good News from California

Rick:

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live. One segment left here. Tim Barton’s got our last piece of good news.

Tim:

There’s some unexpected pro-life-victory good news coming out of California. If you remember back in 2015, there was a guy who did some undercover videos about Planned Parenthood, and his name was David.
I don’t know how to pronounce his last name. I apologize if you’re friend of David, David, if you’re listening, I apologize. Maybe call in to talk to us. Tell us how to pronounce your last name. I apologize.

But it’s David.

So David was a guy who did the undercover video of Planned Parenthood. And in this video, he was talking to them in Planned Parenthood in this video. So people that worked for Planned Parenthood, the leaders, acknowledged that they were harvesting baby parts, baby organs, and they were selling those outside to research labs and facilities. So literally they’re taking parts from the babies they have just killed, and they are selling those parts.

David:

Which violates federal law, by the way. That is illegal.

Tim:

Totally illegal. They’re on camera saying they’re doing this.

So they’re doing the illegal, bad stuff.

Rick:

And he’s the one that the government goes after because he’s exposing them?

Tim:

Yeah. Well, planned Parenthood sued him, and actually 15 felony counts were brought against him. Among those were things like nonconsensual eavesdropping, which I don’t even understand how, when you admitted on camera to harvesting baby parts, and selling baby parts, which is absolutely a felony, criminal activity, that he is the one getting sued.

Well he actually, in California, had lost at the lower level courts. It goes up to the Supreme Court of California.

America Wants an Increase in Religion and More Good News on WallBuilders Live

And really good news, unexpectedly for him, the Thomas More Society were the ones representing him, and their expectation was, “This is gonna go to the U.S. Supreme Court.”

Well, it didn’t have to, because the California Supreme Court reversed the lower court decisions, and they acknowledged—or they said—that you cannot bring any more charges against him. This case is dropped and he gets off the hook.

So really, what should have happened, right? He’s exposing the evil that Planned Parenthood was doing, that many Christians conservatives many, on the other side of the abortion issue suspected some of this was going on. He exposed it from their own mouth. They said they were doing this. He was the one getting in trouble, not Planned Parenthood.

Well, the good news is somebody in California on that Supreme Court recognized that this is ridiculous, and the charges against David were dropped. So it’s really good news for David, and for the pro-life community.
