Faith And The Culture

Rick:

A New Movement

Rick:

Tim, later in the program Congressman, former Congressman, Randy Forbes, from Virginia will be with us to talk about Keep Faith in America. A new movement out there that’s actually got some great strategy behind it and a lot of activities that they’re going to be involved in. But first off, man, why does it even matter? Shouldn’t it kind of be an each to his own, everybody do what they want? Why does it matter if faith is a big deal in America anymore?

Tim:

Well, it’s what the Founding Fathers certainly collectively agreed on. The Founding Fathers had a lot of different faith backgrounds. Although predominantly outspoken Christians, there were a few, like your Franklins and some guys, that weren’t really outspoken Christians per se. Now Franklin was very pro Christian. He actually attended church much of his life.

He was very involved supporting Christian movements. Although on the outside looking in today we would say, “Well, we don’t really think he was a Christian.” However, with all that being said, the Founding Fathers, the reason they were able to collectively come together, was they recognized that America needed a system of morality. We needed a system of right and wrong. It’s the reason, Franklin, again being considered the least religious Founding Father in our era, Franklin is the guy who actually promoted church attendance.

When he was governor of Pennsylvania, he said, “We need to get everybody in our state going to church.” Now that’s not necessarily because Franklin believed that everybody needed to know Jesus. Although certainly, we would acknowledge that would be a good thing. Franklin said, “We need everybody going to church because if people go to church, then they’re less likely to commit crimes.” He says, “It’s not the faithful church attenders that are your thieves, and your murderers, and your crooks, and all these kinds of things.”

Benjamin Franklin: “If People Would Go to Church, it Would Help Our Nation”

Tim:

He said, “So if people would go to church, it would help our nation in a moral sense.” Or really, for him it was his state, it would help the state of Pennsylvania.

Rick:

Even if he didn’t buy into everything about a particular faith, he saw the results of people involved in faith and how much better society was.

Tim:

Yeah, he didn’t say people need to believe in Jesus necessarily. But he did believe people needed to follow the morals of Jesus.  You know, we live in a culture that is really considered like a postmodern culture where we embrace subjective morality.  We think everybody should determine right and wrong for themselves.  You can’t tell me what I can and can’t do.

And you can’t judge me because you have a different answer than I have.  Who are you to tell me what I can and can’t do with my body and my life?   Everything has become subjective. In culture, that ultimately won’t work. Because if it’s purely subjective morality, then nobody can ever be wrong in what they do because they thought it was right.

But in a culture that doesn’t work. There has to be a standard of right and wrong.   So then the question comes, “Where do we find that standard?  This is what faith has always done. It wasn’t just a faith of, “Well as long as you have faith, believe in whatever you want to believe in.”

It was really a, “What is the best standard of morality? What’s the best system of morality we can find?”  That’s where even the least religious founding fathers pointed to the Bible. Because there is no greater moral teachings than those of Jesus. It’s why Jefferson said that Jesus had the greatest moral teachings of everybody.

We Can’t Live Free in a Culture if There is No Standard of Morality

Tim:

And he steadied every religion, right, he studied every philosopher, he says there’s no greater moral teacher than Jesus.  This is really where the Founding Fathers came to.   So in a culture, in America, if we are going to live free, there has to be a standard of morality that everybody follows.  One cannot live free if people think that murder, if people think that stealing, if people think that dishonesty, if people think these things are acceptable, then we will not be able to live free in a culture. We will need more police officers, more citizens to arm themselves, defend themselves, from all these bad guys.

We can’t live in true freedom if there not a system of morality.   That’s what faith does. When you can point to say, the Bible, and you find the morality from the Bible. And the standards of what Jesus said, the way we love people, and treat people, and serve people, and put people before ourselves. When you follow those standards, there’s no higher standard of morality and there’s nothing better for a nation than having that high standard of morality.

Rick:

I remember seeing you say this, I think it may have been at Patriot Academy or somewhere else. And you were speaking and you pointed out, it’s very simple, you said, “Look, if you want liberty, you’ve got to have morality. If you want morality, you’ve got to have religion, you’ve got to have faith that teaches that morality and teaches that standard.” That’s why the French Revolution didn’t work – because it took out religion and morality. They wanted the libertos, they wanted liberty, but they couldn’t have it without the morality.

Faith is No Longer Seen As Important in the Culture

Rick:

And you couldn’t have the morality without the religion. And our Founders got that one right. But now we’re starting to just attack faith and attack religion. Not starting, man, it’s been five decades of that. And it’s taken its toll. Faith is really not, it’s no longer seen as important in the culture.

Tim:

Yeah, it’s one of the things that Franklin actually told Thomas Paine. When Thomas Paine wrote his piece Age of Reason that was really attacking Christianity, Benjamin Franklin said, “Look, you don’t need to be like–” and I’m going mispronounces, but it was like, “–the *Hottentots” he says, “where they have to beat their mother to prove they’re a man.” He says, “You do not need to abuse Christianity to prove that you are independent.” He says, “This is the very thing that nursed you, and grew you up, and gave you a culture.”

And that’s what Americans today have forgotten. The reason that we’ve enjoyed the freedom and stability in our nation has been because of Christianity. And now we are attacking the very thing, the mother if you will, that gave us life, that has allowed us to enjoy the life we have. We’re attacking that very foundation which is Christianity. But there are people out there who are making an effort to say, “Wait a second, we need to help restore faith and culture.”

And of course, what we try to do at WallBuilders is point to historically where the Founding Fathers believed and promoted this faith culture and faith system. But even today, there are people out there saying, “Wait a second, we need to get back to faith. We need to understand the importance and the role of faith.” And almost even like what happened over in England, where this famous antislavery guy, William Wilberforce, what he said as he’s in the midst of fighting against slavery in England he says, “We need to make manners fashionable again.”

Rick:

Yeah.

We Need to Make Being Good Fashionable Again

Tim:

He says, “We need to make being good fashionable again.” Well, we could use that in America. We could use more manners and more being good. But ultimately, there’s an effort to say, “Let’s make faith fashionable again.” Where if you are a business owner, and you are a person of faith, you’re not going to lose your business just because you have faith, right?

You’re not going be made fun of in college. You’re not going to be penalized by a professor because you’re a Christian. We need to make faith fashionable again. And there’s actually a movement going that direction.

Rick:

That’s so good, that’s so good. Keep faith in America is making faith fashionable again. I like the way you put that – making faith fashionable again. It’s exactly what these guys are doing. KeepFaithinAmerica.com is the website. Congressman Randy Forbes from Virginia, former Congressman Randy Forbes, big part of that and going to be with us to tell us about it.

There’s a big event happening just in a few days, next week. You can be a part of that and participate online. So, stay with us. Congressman Randy Forbes when we return on WallBuilders Live.

Biographical Sketches

Hi friends! This is Tim Barton of WallBuilders. This is a time when most Americans don’t know much about American history or even heroes of the faith. I know, oftentimes as parents, we’re trying to find good content for our kids to read.

If you remember back in the Bible, the Book of Hebrews it has the Faith Hall of Fame, where they outlined the leaders of faith that had gone before them. Well,, this is something that as Americans we really want to go back and outline some of these heroes not just of American history, but heroes of Christianity and our faith as well.

I wanted to let you know about some biographical sketches we have available on our website. One is called, “The Courageous Leaders Collection” and this collection includes people like Abigail Adams, Abraham Lincoln, Francis Scott Key, George Washington Carver, Susanna Wesley, even the Wright brothers.

There’s a second collection called, “Heroes of History” in this collection you read about people like Benjamin Franklin, Christopher Columbus, Daniel Boone, George Washington, Harriet Tubman, the list goes on and on.

This is a great collection for your young person to have and read. And it’s a providential view of American and Christian history. This is available at WallBuilders.com.

Moment From American History

This is Tim Barton from WallBuilders with another moment from American history.

The Reverend James Caldwell was a famous minister during the American War for Independence. His sermons taught liberty and God’s opposition to tyranny.

The British hated him and tried to kill him. So, for his own protection, he would actually take loaded pistols with him into the pulpit and lay them beside his Bible as he preached. In the 1780 Battle of Springfield, the Americans ran out of wadding for their guns which was like having no ammunition.

Pastor Caldwell ran inside a nearby church and returned with an armload of Watt Hymnals, the pages of which would provide the much needed wadding. He took this great Bible-based hymnal, raised in the air, and shouted to the troops,”Now put to watts into them, boys!”  This pastor’s ingenuity saved the day for the Americans.

Rick:

Welcome back and thanks for staying with us here on WallBuilders Live. Our good friend, former Congressman Randy Forbes, back with us. Randy, always good to have you, bro.

Former Congressman Randy Forbes:

Well, Rick, it’s great to be with you. And we just appreciate so much what you and WallBuilders do for the country.

Keep Faith in America Kickoff

Rick:

Well, right back at you. We’re excited about this Keep faith in America and the big kickoff happening next week. Tell us about this.

Former Congressman Randy Forbes:

Well, Rick, we’re excited about it as well. And as you know, right now the United States is facing enormous challenges, both foreign and domestic. All of your listeners, they just have to turn on their TV, or connect to the internet, or read their newspapers, and they understand that. But the thing that concerns many of us is that faith has historically been a thread that has tied us together as a nation. It helped right us when we got off course.

And it was the light that continued no matter how dark things seemed to be. And today, faith is just under tremendous attack all across America.  People of faith have normally not been very strategic and they haven’t been very united. And so there are a number of people across America that really wanted to turn this around. So, for months, some of the best strategists that I know have been meeting people committed to their faith to say, “How do we turn this around?”

Only 25% of the Colonists Supported the Revolutionary War

Former Congressman Randy Forbes:

And, David Barton, he told us something that was really important and he threw out a statistic that said this, that during the Revolutionary War, a lot of people don’t realize that only 25 percent of the people living in the colonies really supported that effort. About an equal number were against that and the rest were apathetic. But the real statistic, Rick, was that David mentioned that just 8 percent of the residents in the colonies actually ever did anything for the cause of freedom. That is either *, contributed money, wrote an article, did anything.

Rick:

So, even of the of the 25 percent of the colonies that supported the Revolution, you still had roughly 17 of that 25 percent sitting on the sidelines not doing anything.

Former Congressman Randy Forbes:

Well, it was 8 percent of the total hundred percent of people living in here that ever actually did anything, Rick,–

Rick:

Wow.

Former Congressman Randy Forbes:

For the cause of freedom. That’s kind of a negative when you first look at it, but it’s also positive.

Rick:

That’s right.

8% of People United With the Right Strategy Can Change Any Nation

Former Congressman Randy Forbes:

Because if you look across history, eight percent of people that had the right strategy and were united together could change the course of any nation anywhere in the world.  We realized that’s true here in America as well.  So, as I mentioned, for months we’ve had people who’ve come together. And the great thing, Rick, is they didn’t come together with any particular organization. They came together, not to lift themselves up, but to say, “How do we create 1) the right strategies to turn things around for faith in America?”

But then 2), “How do we unite that 8 percent?” And sometimes it comes down to simply which pronoun is the most important in your life? Are we going to use the pronoun “I” the pronoun “we” or the pronoun “they”?  And so many of us want to say “I” all the time. Because if it’s not our program, we don’t want to do it.

The other thing we like to do is sit back and say, “Why don’t they do something?” But what we’re looking for is that core of Americans that are willing to say, “We want to come together and do something.”

Rick:

Yeah.

Former Congressman Randy Forbes:

So, as you mentioned, we have this launch of what we think is a great strategy that’ll begin to turn the course of faith in America. And it’s called Keep Faith in America. And it really has two meanings. First of all, we’re just tired of everybody tearing down the country. We think it’s time that we start standing up for America and say, “We want to keep faith in America as a nation.”

We believe it was divinely inspired. It has a huge role in the world. And we think it’s time we start keeping faith in America. But secondly–

Rick:

And, Randy, just while we’re in the middle of a program here, let’s give out that website real quick so folks can go look at that as well. So, KeepFaith inAmerica.com is the main website.

Check Out the Website!

Former Congressman Randy Forbes:

That’s right. It’s www.KeepFaith inAmerica.com. They can go to it and get all of this information and join and be a part of it.

Rick:

Okay, go ahead. Sorry to interrupt you, but go ahead.

Former Congressman Randy Forbes:

So, no, no. It’s important. And the second part of that is that we think for America to do well, and survive, and reach its destiny, you’ve got to have faith as a part of America. And so we want to make sure we’re preserving faith in America. So, on January 16th, we will have the first of its kind launch across America with legislators standing up in states all across America. There will be 31 states represented.

They’ll be doing it in the United States Capitol. And they’ll be saying, “We want to stand for faith in America.” And they’ll be sending out a call to all of us to join with them and begin to do the same thing. And so that will be a live Facebook launch. Never happened before.

You’ll see people of faith all across America coming together and saying, as with one voice, “We want to keep faith in America.” In February there’ll be a huge launch in churches across America to do the same thing. In March we take it to college campuses.  April, state and local governments.  May, we come around enjoying all the great groups that want to restore prayer in the nation.

What We’ve Got to Do

Former Congressman Randy Forbes:

And in June, we start creating groups across America that will help continue this effort. Rick, we think it comes down to really three things. We’ve got to, if we want to turn things around in America, first of all, be willing to stand. And that’s what these legislators are going to say.

They’re going to say, “We’re standing. We want you to stand with us.” The second thing is, we believe in the power of prayer. And we’ve got to get people to come together and pray for the country. But the third thing is, we’ve got to move. We’ve got to move forward.

Because the great thing about faith in America is, we need to play a role in building the tomorrow of America. Not just talking about the past.

Rick:

Yeah.

Former Congressman Randy Forbes:

So, what we’re going to encourage your viewers to do is just what you said. Go to that website – KeepFaithinAmerica.com. But here’s what they can do. They can stand up and call their legislators and say, “Are you a part of this effort and are you going to be joining this on January 16th?” Second thing is, they can join us on that website.

But the third thing is, we want people all across America, millions of people, to say, “I stand for faith.” We’ve got a little pin for them, it may sound small, but I’ll tell you, just the fact that we will stand up and put a pin on our lapels that say, “I stand for faith” sends a huge message across this country. The fourth thing they can do is allow one of these events to come into their churches. And then the fifth thing is to go in there and tell their stories of faith. Which they can literally go on this website and tell the story of their faith.

Huge Reach Already

And, Rick, just as kind of a wrap-up, let me just tell you how wonderful this thing is. Because it’s no one group because it’s no one person getting the attention and the recognition, the network of people already coming together to support this is over 1200 elected legislators across America–

Rick:

Wow.

Former Congressman Randy Forbes:

–over 100,000 churches, 1900 college campus groups, and literally millions on social media. We’re excited. This is an opportunity to begin to turn the tide and push back on this anti-faith effort. And we just would love it if your viewers would join with us to do that.

Rick:

Man, so many things to get excited about here. And most of all, to me, is just the strategy. Just the fact this isn’t just having one event to bring people together for one day. This is a long-term strategy. It’s getting all the right groups, all the different things that are going to happen in the coming months.

Call Your Legislators This Week

Rick:

The big kickoff next week on the 16th. Legislators all over the country are going to be gathering in their state capitals and some in Congress as well. And folks can be a part of that by calling their legislators this week and saying, “Hey, are you a part of this? We want to make sure you know about it.” And the great opportunity to be a part of this next week.

Former Congressman Randy Forbes:

That’s exactly right. And then they can join us on that facebook event on the 16th. They’re going to be encouraged because they’re going to see not just elected leaders, but they’re going to see this in so many different states. As I mentioned, it’s over 31 states. But also they’re going to see elected leaders and individuals from the faith community from all across America coming on that Facebook event. Saying, “Look, this is an opportunity for us to do what people of faith have been talking about for years.” One, who actually have a real strategy.  Number two, that everybody can unite together and join. And, Rick, we’re just excited because we know what the Lord can do–

Rick:

Yeah.

Former Congressman Randy Forbes:

–if we’ll just do our part.

Rick:

And, Randy, you said something so important at the beginning about, basically, the numbers. Because I think sometimes our folks get frustrated or discouraged because they think that we’re losing the country because there are so many against faith now. And those numbers are so important. So remember, if 25 percent of the folks in the colonial period were for the Revolution, and 25 percent were against, and 50 percent didn’t care and weren’t involved. That means three out of four were either against or just not paying attention.

Don’t Get Discouraged, Move On to the Next Person

Rick:

And that’s kind of what you face today. So, when you have somebody that you know or you love in your family or whatever that’s not on board and not excited about this, don’t get discouraged. Just say, okay, fine, who’s next, who else can I go to? You’re looking for that 8 percent, the doers, the ones that will get out. And like you said, I loved your pronoun example as well, Randy, the ones that will say, “We are the ones that have to do this. We have to take action.”

Not constantly say, “Well somebody ought to do this.” Or, “They ought to do this.” But actually, we together can make a difference.

Former Congressman Randy Forbes:

And, Rick, that’s one of the things we’ve all made a mistake about. We’ve been focusing so much on, how do we change all the people who disagree with us and who perhaps have no faith at all? The Lord said the harvest is great, and it is. That 8 percent is already out there, we just have to bring them together. We have to unite and then we have to have strategies and we can turn it around.

Most of your viewers remember the great success of William Wilberforce and his great stand for faith in England. And one of the things that he said in his greatest book, which I think was Real Christianity that he wrote, was he said, “I want to start off and say I’m not writing to the skeptics or the people that doubt. I’m writing to the people who actually believe–”

Rick:

Yeah.

There is 8% of People Out There if We Bring Them Together

Former Congressman Randy Forbes:

“–Who believe in the Lord and believe the Bible is the word of God.” And there’s eight percent of people out there if we bring them together. And the result we’re going to see from that for tomorrow in this country is going to be incredible.

Rick:

I love it. I love it, Randy. It’s like a clarion call, it really is. You’re raising a banner that people can rally around. And it’s just like Elijah thought he was the only one, so God said, “7,000 haven’t bowed their knee to Baal.”

I feel that way in America right now sometimes. As faith believers, we sometimes think we’re the only one. Well, we’re not – there are millions of Americans that will join us. So, Randy, let’s real quick just run down this list of five things. So, call your legislator.

Ask them if they’re going to be a part of this next week, you can send them a link to the website – KeepFaithinAmerica.com. You can join there at the website so that you can keep up with what’s going on and be a part of that. Randy mentioned several things over the next four or five months that are going to be happening with this that you can be part of. And, Randy, you mentioned the pin and some people, like you said, may think that’s a small thing. But promotion is so important to let other people know that this is happening, and that the movement is happening, and that they can be a part of it.

So, get that pin, folks. Wear it. Go ahead, Randy.

Are You Part of the 8%?

Former Congressman Randy Forbes:

You know, Rick, I was just going to say how crucial that is. If you take that pin, and it’s a very small pin, it just says, “I stand for change.” But if you– ask yourself, “If I won’t even put this pin on my lapel because I’m afraid somebody is going to be offended by it, or I’m going to embarrass somebody, then are you really part of that 8 percent?” And I think it’s huge when you just put something like that on and we send a symbol out saying, “We stand for faith.”

And then the last thing, Rick, too, is on this website, we want these individuals to tell their stories of faith. We’ve let the media describe what Christians are like. We have not taken that task on ourselves.

Rick:

Yeah.

Former Congressman Randy Forbes:

We need to tell the incredible stories of faith that are going on in America. Because they’ll encourage people and they’ll encourage one another as we come together to turn this country around.

Rick:

That’s such a great point. You’re exactly right. And the way that faith has been depicted in movies, and television, and the media, has obviously been very negative. So telling that story is huge. And then, of course, the fourth one that you mentioned earlier was the churches getting involved as well.

Get Your Church Involved

Rick:

A lot of our listeners, pastors, are leaders their church. It doesn’t matter if you’re a leader, go tell the leaders of your particular church you want them to participate in this. Get more churches involved as well.

Congressman Randy Forbes, bless you, brother. Thank you for this and thank you for letting our listeners know about it. And just so excited about next week and kicking this thing off on the 16th.

Former Congressman Randy Forbes:

Thanks, Rick. It’s always great to be with you.

Rick:

It’s KeepFaithinAmerica.com. That’s the website, KeepFaithinAmerica.com. We’ll be right back with Tim Barton. Stay with us. You’re listening to WallBuilders Live.

Pastors Only Briefing Trip

Tim:

Hi, this is Tim Barton with WallBuilders and I want to encourage all the pastors out there with a unique opportunity that we’re presenting it WallBuilders. We’re doing a special tour just for pastors that you can come and learn more about the spiritual heritage of our nation. Not just seeing the sights but understanding the significance of what they are and what they represent.

We get to go to the Capitol at night.  And we get to see the spiritual heritage of our Founding Fathers, of who we are as a nation, where we came from. We bring in congressman that will tell you about current legislation, about our religious liberties and freedom, and what’s going on in Washington, D.C.

If you’re a pastor or if you want to recommend your pastor for this trip, you can go to our website at www.WallBuilders.com. And there’s a link that’s for scheduling.  If you click on that link there’s a section for pastor’s briefing. There’s more information about the dates, when it’s going, and how it’s going to happen. If you want to know more about our nation, our religious liberties, our freedom, our spiritual heritage, this is a trip you want to be a part of.

Rick:

Welcome back. Thanks for staying with us here on WallBuilders Live. Special thanks to Congressman Randy Forbes for joining us today as well. The website again, KeepFaithinAmerica.com.

We’re back with Tim Barton now. Tim, pretty good list here of things for us to do. Call the legislators, let them know about this deal next week, get on the website. That’s the way you’re going to find out about each of those activities coming up in the coming months. Get your church involved, wear that pin, and tell your story of faith.

So, plenty of things we can each do as individuals to be part of Keeping Faith in America.

Find Out What’s Happening in Your State

Tim:

There really is. One of the things, in addition to calling your state legislator, encourage them to be a part of this, encourage them to get involved. But then find out what’s happening in your state. I know here in Texas, there is going to be a news release deal going on at the Texas State Capitol. And so I’m actually driving down.

I’m going to be down there in Austin as it happens.  So I’m going to go participate in what’s happening on the 16th on that Tuesday. And so you ought to call, talk to your state legislators, make sure they’re involved, encourage them to be a part of this.   Uf they already are, if you’re in one of those 31 states that are doing something, find out, “Well, hey, how can I go? How can I support?” I want to show up where this is going on.

I want to stand in solidarity and show support for this. And then certainly, as Randy said, the second thing you can follow them, get on the website, see what’s going on. Because this is not just a January 16 deal. Randy is a brilliant strategist. He’s actually teaching at the war college right now.

Really what he’s doing is a military strategy. So, he really is a great strategy guy. But one of the things that he is explaining is, this is something that is going to have a multiple month rollout. And each month there’s going to be a different emphasis. And so in February, he’s going to challenge and encourage churches to do things to promote faith.

You would think, “Wait a second, churches already promote faith.” Well, yes, but strategically some things to try to get the church as a whole in the nation on the same page. I think in March it’s going to be colleges and moving on colleges. And there are things each month that’s happening. So, really neat stuff. Certainly, you can, number three, he said you can buy one of those pins, wear one of those pins, show support.

Just all these things going through the list. It really is just an effort to kind of bring faith back. And the last thing he said was, “Make sure you share your faith story.”

Rick:

Yeah.

We All Have to Do Our Part to Keep Faith In America

Tim:

And if we’re going to make an effort to make faith fashionable in America again, or to keep faith in America, we as individuals have to go, “You know what, I’m going to do my part. I will share my story. I want faith to be fashionable again.” So, these are things we can do to go that direction.

Rick:

Alright, folks, plenty of action items from today’s program. Check it out at KeepFaithinAmerica.com. We appreciate you listening today to WallBuilders Live.
