Faith And The Culture

Rick:

You’ve found your way to the intersection of faith and the culture. This is WallBuilders Live! Where we’re talking about today’s hottest topics on policy, faith, and the culture. We always do that from a biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective.

My name is Rick Green, I’m a former Texas legislator. Normally, David Barton is with us, America’s premier historian. And Tim Barton, national speaker and pastor. But today we’re doing something a little bit different. Those guys are out today and we’ve got Nicole Hudgens coming in with us. She’s actually on the frontlines in Texas with Texas Values, fighting for our liberty on a daily basis. Literally, a citizen lobbyist, if you will, on family issues and on those major issues of the day. Working hard to make sure that our biblical, constitutional, and historical perspective is defended on the frontline. She’s going to be with us when we come back from the break.

I want to encourage you to check out two websites. WallBuildersLive.com is our main website. That’s where you can get a list of our stations across the country. You can get archives of our programs over the last few weeks. Lots of other great information there as well.

I want to personally invite you to come spend the weekend with our family as we get expert handgun defense training from Front Sight Firearms Training Institute during the day and then provide a constitution crash course in the evening. The Barton’s and the Green’s had an amazing time doing this with many of you back in April, so we’re headed back in the fall.

Nicole Hudgens From Texas Values

Rick:

Welcome back. Thanks for staying with us here on WallBuilders Live. Nicole Hudgens is with us from Texas Values, great organization here in Texas that lobbies for family values and just does a fantastic job. Nicole, thanks for coming on.

Nicole Hudgens:

Thank you so much for having me.

Rick:

Well, hey, you did an outstanding, outstanding, job at Patriot Academy last week speaking to the students. It was passionate, it was engaging, it was informing, it inspired them. It also made them realize, hey, I can go do this, I can be involved in the arena, I don’t have to be 60 years old to make a difference. So, thank you first of all for coming and speaking.

Nicole Hudgens:

Well, thank you so much for the opportunity. Really, I feel like Patriot Academy is an encouragement to me to see the next generation standing up and taking the time– a whole we out of their summer– to learn how to stand up and be leaders in their culture.

What Do You Have to Fight About in Texas?

Rick:

Yeah, it’s kind of every year a week where I get rejuvenated. Because you see that and you go, okay, I can go fight for another year because I know that we’re sowing into these young people. And you obviously fight day in and day out for the values we talk about here at WallBuilders Live. And care very, very, much about. And some people think  Buckle of the Bible Belt is Texas, what does she got to fight about in Texas? Surely they’re all conservative in Texas. Not so, right? This is an ongoing battle for us here as well.

Nicole Hudgens:

Exactly. Actually I– after Patriot Academy, when I did it, I went to Washington D.C. afterwards–

Rick:

And I forgot to mention that, by the way, you are also a Patriot Academy grad. We should actually tell some of your story and how you got started. Kind of what got you interested in politics and then let’s come back to you going to Washington after PA. Yeah, let’s just back up in the story. What got you into this?

Nicole Hudgens:

That’s a great question. So, I actually thought I was going to be a nurse and a missionary for a long time.

Rick:

You’re still a missionary, let me tell you.

Nicole Hudgens:

It does feel like that on some days. But yeah, I just have some incredible parents. My dad was a pilot in the United States Air Force for 24 years. And my mom is an incredible intercessor. That woman knows how to pray. So, growing up in this amazing home I understood not just what I believed as an American, but why I believed what I believed. From a biblical perspective. So, my parents always taught, when God talks about Himself in the Bible, He identified Himself many times as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and that God operates with the very generational mentality.

Whether You Want to Or Not

Nicole Hudgens:

So, I grew up with that understanding not really involved in politics, I was very pro-life. But ended up doing a very last minute speech competition my senior year of high school. I had never done anything like that before and ended up getting fourth place, which was a big deal for me. When I went to school I asked, “Do you have anything–” their nursing program wasn’t what I wanted, so I said, “Well, do you have anything kind of like public speaking.” They said, “Yeah.” Well, next thing I know the debate coach is calling me saying, “Well, in order for your degree in speech to be valid you need to be on the debate team.”

Rick:

Whether you want to be or not.

Nicole Hudgens:

Right. Right. So, I’m not personally very confrontational, which is hilarious considering–

Rick:

Yeah, considering what you do now, yes.

Nicole Hudgens:

–which is very confrontational sometimes. But I got my degree in speech communications, was on the debate team, graduated, really was praying about what was next. And went on a trip to Washington D.C. a little bit last minute, again, and got on the trip and there was a girl there that said she had just gotten back from this incredible program called Patriot Academy. And there was just something inside of me, I really believe it was the Holy Spirit, that said, “Look that up right now.”

Rick:

Wow.

LIFT Principles

Nicole Hudgens:

So, I did. I was Googling it on my iPhone on the bus and thought, “Wow, I really think I need to do this.” And sure enough, was able to come, was so thankful for the opportunity to be able to see what the legislative process looks like. But also to be taught things like that– I’m sure you talk about it on the radio– the LIFT principles. Understanding when you’re looking at public policy you need to be asking the questions – does this government, does it allow individual freedom, does it protect freedom, traditional family values? Asking those questions–

Rick:

Yeah.

Nicole Hudgens:

–when you’re looking at public policy can really answer questions whether or not this is a good or bad piece of legislation. So, took that–

Rick:

And that kind of takes what is kind of a murky world of politics, like where does all this stuff fit in, and what’s good, what’s bad, and it just sort of puts some paradigms on it, and some perspective, so that it starts to make sense. It’s like easier to put legislation in into buckets, if that makes sense.

Nicole Hudgens:

Absolutely. It’s so helpful and, really, I carry those principles with me as a policy analyst everyday.

Rick:

As do I. Even as I look at stuff for the radio program, or whatever it might be, I think about that. Does this help with limited government, the jurisdiction’s of government, and keep those lines in place? Does this policy support individual liberties? Who decides, if this policy goes into motion, who gets to make decisions – the individual or government? Free enterprise – does it protect those policies of free enterprise and  support an economic engine that thrives best, as Jefferson said, “when we’re left to our individual decisions.” And then last those traditional values, those truths, that we know don’t change over time.

That’s what we call the LIFT principles – limited government, individual liberties, free enterprise, and timeless truths.

That’s a good place to take a break. We’ll be right back. Nicole Hudgens, our special guest today. Stay with us. You’re listening to what others like.

Rick:

Welcome back. Thanks for staying with the here on WallBuilders Live. Nicole Hudgens with us. She’s at Texas Values, she’s constantly in the fight on the frontlines lobbying for our family values at the Texas legislature. But a great example of what all of us can do across the country.

Nicole, before we went to the break we were talking about the LIFT principles which is what you learned at Patriot Academy. It’s what I learned back when I was a legislator from our conservative organization there. And it’s Limited government, Individual liberties, Free enterprise, and Timeless truths. And it just helps you quickly identify whether a policy is good or bad, what the results will likely be from that policy.

So, you were telling us a little bit before we went to break about how you use that in what you’re doing on a daily basis. Jump back into how you developed from Patriot Academy into what you’re doing now and kind of what’s on the horizon.

Nicole Hudgens:

Leader’s Edge

Nicole Hudgens:

Really, I carry those principles with me as a policy analyst everyday. So, I took what I learned at Patriot Academy, ended up getting to intern with Family Research Council and the Heritage Foundation. Came back and did a little bit of television and radio. Which, by the way, shout out for your Leader’s Edge workshop that you do at Patriot Academy, has been, was super helpful. I was a speech communications major, but what you taught to the students about public speaking has been very helpful for me–

Rick:

Cool.

Nicole Hudgens:

–as I continue to do the work that I’m doing.

Rick:

I appreciate that shameless plug. I’ll send you a little tip in the mail. No, not really, but yeah.

Nicole Hudgens:

It really was just so hopeful. And I have to let our listeners know – you did that– you did your Leader’s Edge workshop right before I spoke. So, I was not intimidated at all.

Rick:

Oh, you’re talking about this year?

Nicole Hudgens:

Yes.

Rick:

Well, no, the bad part was your presentation was far better than my workshop was. But it was a great way for the students to see how effective someone can be if they’re passionate about what they’re saying, but yet they take the time to plan their presentation in terms of  just the skills. It’s obvious you’ve– either you’ve worked on it or you’re a total natural. You really did. You connected with that whole group and that was– even the room was a hard room to speak in. It wasn’t like– it’s a difficult situation, but yet you connected and you had those students eating out of the palm of your hand.

And I know, I had several students afterwards talking about that by you doing what you did they were like, “I can do this. I can make a difference, I can go out there and engage in this.” I think that’s kind of what you left Patriot Academy with and then obviously did it. You’ve been doing this now, what, five years?

The Public Policy Arena

Nicole Hudgens:

Yes, I’ve been working in the public policy arena for five, maybe even going on close to six years. Which is, I can’t believe the time has flown by. But I think what’s been so encouraging over– what I’ve learned a Patriot Academy and the things that God’s continued to teach me as I continue to do the work is really understanding 1) that everything we do should be founded on a faith.

And one of the things that I told the students at Patriot Academy, there was a summer where I was getting to do television and radio, but really wanted to get back in public policy. And it was actually during that season where I didn’t know what to do that I had to learn how to spend one on one time with the Lord. I had done that growing up, but really when you’re making those decisions, God, where do you want me to be? Show me what Your will is for my life. It was those moments where I had to learn how to go into the secret place with the Lord and spend that one on one time with Him. And it was from that place that I feel like God with able to launch me into the next season which was hands on–

Rick:

Yeah.

Nicole Hudgens:

–going to the front lines, and being prepared to handle these battles. And at Texas Values, we’re working on life, marriage, religious freedom, human sexuality, issues. And these are not– it sounds like they would be easy issues, but unfortunately, even in Texas there’s some major fights.

Baptism By Fire

Rick:

Well, in fact, you kind of got baptism by fire. You came in – before you were working for Texas Values – you came in for one of our big rallies when it was a nasty, nasty fight at the Texas Capitol on the life issue. And the left was chanting, they had people marching around the capitol chanting, “Hail Satan”, it was a nasty situation and you came in just to be a part of that. I remember that.

Nicole Hudgens:

I did. At the time I was living in Louisiana and actually, I think it had been maybe a few weeks after Patriot Academy. So, I was still connected with everybody on social media and started seeing all these posts. And there was just something in me that knew it was critical that Texas passed the HB2 law. Again, at the time living in Louisiana, what happens in Texas impacts the rest of the nation.

Rick:

That’s right.

Nicole Hudgens:

And we’ve actually– I’ve been working at a conference at our church and there was a group of us that was– we were exhausted. It was a three day conference, all day long. But when we found out that the rallies were happening, and that they needed people on the ground there to represent and to pray, there were five of us that just said, I think, decided that day, we’re going to jump in the church van and drive the six hour drive to Texas to be there. Because it is so important that Texas continues to stand for this issue.

Rick:

Yeah. How do you– even at that moment, but definitely in what you’re doing now, what do you say to young people that are thinking – you can’t make a difference, it’s too big. Or even in the church – it’s too nasty and I need to– kind of like what you said earlier– I’m just going to go be a missionary somewhere in some foreign country and that will be good and holy. But politics, oh no, no, no, that’s a nasty business. How do you combat that when you’re out there in the arena and when you run into young people that you’re  telling about this?

To Young People: Your Voice Matters More Than Ever

Nicole Hudgens:

Well, I would say to young people your voice matters now more than ever. Look at what’s happening on the media right now when a young person speaks out on the issue. And you can talk to any legislator too – when they have young people speaking out on these issues, they really listen.

Rick:

They do. Yeah.

Nicole Hudgens:

And it’s so important for this upcoming generation to realize not just what they believe, but why they believe it.

Rick:

Yeah.

Nicole Hudgens:

Because when you realize that the decisions that governments are making are going to determine whether or not that state or that nation aligns with God’s plan, with what God’s word says about those issues, that can bring either a blessing or a curse.

Rick:

Yeah.

Nicole Hudgens:

And I know that sounds really direct and forward, but biblically it’s true. Not only that – we know that when we align with protecting our traditional family values, of making sure our policies protect the idea that marriage is between a man and a woman, when we endorse marriage between a man and a woman, that’s creating, helping to create, a stable environment for families.

Rick:

Yeah.

As Texas Goes

Nicole Hudgens:

When you see stable families you’re going to watch the economy flourish, you’re going to see the education system prosper, you’re going to see– really, families being together is really a core foundational principle of our nation.

Rick:

No doubt.

Nicole Hudgens:

And you see the ripple effects of that. When a nation prospers in those areas you’ll see the other areas of society continue to prosper. And really, Texas being such an important part of where those values are. I remember being in D.C. and sitting around with congressional staff members talking about life, marriage, religious freedom issues, and they would constantly ask, “Where is Texas on this issue?” Because as Texas goes, so goes the rest of the nation. And even in Washington D.C. they know that.

So, that’s why even before I left for Texas I had a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force Look at me and say, “You’re going to the front lines–”

Rick:

Amen.

Nicole Hudgens:

“–because that’s where these issues are fought.” And really, it’s Texas, I believe, in the direction we’re going, we can actually advance those issues – not just for our state, but for the rest of the nation.

Rick:

No doubt, no doubt. One more question for you. Okay, so you also, I think, especially in our Christian circles sometimes, I think the ladies are intimidated to be active, be citizen activists. And sometimes we have discouraged them and said, “That’s not your role.” Which, I think, is a huge mistake. You found something different on that when you came to Patriot Academy. And tell me a little bit about that and how you also inspire the ladies to be involved in this.

We Need Women Speaking Out on the Life Issue

Rick:

Because we need female voices on, especially on the life issue. I can’t stand that when Republican men– you’ll have a press conference and it’s all guys on a life issue. And I’m thinking, “You fools. This is horrible marketing. Where are the female voices?” Because we have strong, strong, awesome women speaking out on the life issue and these guys just– Anyway, it’s a huge mistake. But I love seeing you out front on these issues and I know you’ve seen other women in this movement that inspired you in that as well. Kind of walk us through that as well.

Nicole Hudgens:

I think that’s a great point that we need to be encouraging young women to speak up on these issues. And for me, it helped seeing other women do that. Cathy Dolan was a huge inspiration for me seeing how she wasn’t afraid to get involved. And that girl has done a number of things.

Rick:

No doubt. She was Governor of Patrick Academy– and she might have been Governor when you came, I can’t remember the timeline there. But very involved, and marching in Washington, and going and speaking on the Supreme Court steps.

Nicole Hudgens:

Yes. She was a huge inspiration to me. So, I think finding those women who are speaking up and asking them, “How are you doing what you’re doing?” She was, in a way, a mentor, and now a very dear friend of mine.

But also, I think that we we want to encourage these young women. Think of Deborah in the Bible. Barack wouldn’t even go to war without her because of how strong of a leader she was. So, I think it’s so important that these young girls are told that they can speak up and that they need to speak up. The left, unfortunately, has this false narrative that they are the ones who can speak on the women’s issues. But we need these young women to be encouraged to continue to speak up.

And even thinking about the privacy issue, people call it “the bathroom” issue. That’s a women’s issue right there.

Rick:

Yeah.

The Time Is Now

Nicole Hudgens:

We don’t want men to come into the showers, locker rooms, and bathrooms. And it was a young girl named Shiloh who wasn’t afraid to go– she’s 10 years old and wasn’t afraid to go in front of an entire Senate committee, state Senate committee, and talk about her concerns. And I’m telling you, because she was a young woman her voice carried more weight. Young people need to realize it’s right now that you have the ability to make a difference because people are listening to the young people.

Rick:

So powerful. so powerful. And I got to tell you, that’s one of the things that– because I know some of our listeners might say, “Well, yes, but we don’t want to fall into the feminist trap of now women neglecting their families, or whatever, and going off, and it’s their own career separate from their husband, and they’re not a team anymore.” That’s not what we’re saying at all. In fact, that these women that you’re talking about, you as– family is still first and you still are family oriented. You still encourage the family and you still encourage the role of the male a female being different. All those things are still there, but every single one of us has a voice. And as citizens – male, female, young, old. Every single one of us has a duty to be involved in this. Do you agree with that?

Nicole Hudgens:

I totally agree. I’ll never forget when my dad told me, as the United States Air Force pilot, he said, “I signed my name on a dotted line that no matter what the cost, even if it cost me my life, I would give it for for my nation. And I’ll never forget that moment because it was so powerful. And I really felt the weight of what he was telling me. I also remember being at Arlington Cemetery and seeing the headstones of those who were my age, or younger, who had given their life, so that I could walk in freedom.

We Have A Responsibility

Nicole Hudgens:

And it’s incumbent upon this next generation to realize some of us may go out to a physical war and some of us may not. But we have a responsibility to make sure that those freedoms that were fought for in the previous generations are able to be passed on to the next. And if we don’t stand up, those freedoms– it’s like Reagan talked about. We can’t take this for granted. We have to stand up.

And I will tell you that there is an all out assault on this generation on core issues of what family, what faith is, and what freedom is.

Rick:

Yeah.

And it’s critical, now more than ever, that we not be afraid to stand up to what culture might be telling us and saying, “No, we know for a fact that that promoting life, marriage being between a man and a woman, religious freedom, core family values, are going to be of benefit to our nation.”

Rick:

Amen. So good, Nicole, so good. So, thankful that you’re there on the frontlines, that you’re representing family values, biblical values, and winning battles. That’s the thing people need to realize that this is not a lost cause. There is– the system works if we work it. And you see that every day by going and meeting with legislators, and doing the things you’re doing, and you moving the ball in the right direction. And we’re just thankful for you, you’re just such a great example of the new remnant that God’s raising up.

So, keep up the great work. Keep up the good work at Texas Values. You keep up what you’re doing and we’ll be praying for you to be protected, and bold, and for God to just continue to use your voice in a mighty way.

Faith Family and Freedom Forum

Nicole Hudgens:

Thank you so much, Rick. I really appreciate it. And quick plug– if our listeners are wanting– if your listeners are wanting to go to our website it’s TXValues.org. And we’re actually about to have an awesome Policy Conference here in Austin. We’ve invited Senator Ted Cruz, Allie Beth Stucky, Tim Barton from WallBuilders is going to be speaking as well. We’ve got a number of people who are coming. We would love for everyone to go to TXValues.org, find out more about the Faith Family and Freedom Forum, and check out the work we’re doing. Sign up for our e-mails.

And, Rick, I just so appreciate what you’ve done and taking the time and the effort to invest in the next generation. It truly is making a difference.

Rick:

Well, we’re blessed watching what you guys are doing. And that, by the way, folks, it’s easy to do. When you get to TXValues.org, the conference is right there on the home page. There’s also a box in the top of the page you can just put your e-mail address in there and they’ll keep you updated on what’s going on. I know, obviously, most of our listeners are outside of Texas, but all of you will be informed in a good way. In fact, some of the articles there are cases at the Supreme Court and things that affect everyone in our listening audience. Nicole Hudgins, thank you so much for joining us today on WallBuilders Live.

Nicole Hudgens:

Thank you so much. Have a great day.

Rick:

That was Nicole Hudgens from Texas Values, that’s TXValues.org for more information. I hope you’ve been encouraged by today’s program, I know I have. I just I love talking to these young people that are on the frontlines, out there engaging, not sitting back, not saying, “Somebody else will do it.” Not saying, “It’s too late, it’s too far gone.” But actually saying, “Lord, send me! How can I be of use? What can I do to help restore America’s Constitution? To help restore the biblical foundations upon which our nation was built?”

Lives, Fortune, and Sacred Honor

Rick:

Nicole is such a great example of that. So, many young people that have been through the programs that we recommend to you here on WallBuilders Live. Either Patriot Academy, or the WallBuilders leaders training in the summer, or going out to High Point in Hot Springs, Arkansas, all these different programs that really do help to train up a remnant that truly gets it. That understands these values and then knows how to effectively go out and influence the culture around them.

If you enjoy that, if you enjoy the idea of actually helping others to impact our nation in a positive way, and frankly, the entire world, I encourage to come alongside WallBuilders Live. Help us continue to do this ministry, continue to do this program.  We’re a listener supported program, so every dollar you donate to this program helps us continue to bring you these positive messages and bring you the equipping information that we do on a daily basis. And it also allows us to train legislators and young leaders, just like Nicole and others, at Patriot Academy and through our summer leaders program.

Those donations actually make a difference. It’s a way for you to pledge your life, fortune, and sacred honor. Your life is your time. So, listening to this program, acting on the things we talk about on a daily basis, being a good citizen activist just like Nicole. That’s your life – your time. Your fortune is, obviously, your money. Investing in freedom, investing in young people, investing in this program, investing in an expansion of this information across the country.

Lobbying For Conservative Family Values With Nicole Hudgens

Rick:

You can do all of that at WallBuilders.com. You can do a one time donation or become a monthly contributor as well. That helps us to plan for the next year in terms of adding stations, in terms of new leader training, and other programs that we’re doing.

So, we sure appreciate you coming alongside us. Hope that you’ve enjoyed this encouraging program today. We really appreciate you listening to WallBuilders Live.
