Faith and the Culture

Rick:

Welcome to WallBuilders Live. This is the intersection of faith and the culture. And we’re glad you’re here with us. This is a place where we take on the hot topics of the day, from a biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective.

And we get to have that conversation with David Barton. Man, this guy is the premier historian in America. I’m telling you, he’s read more of the Founding Fathers than anybody alive, I’m talking original documents. He’s really been inside the head, inside the minds of the people that started this nation, which allows us to really dive into those original documents.

But also get his perspective on what they would have thought about some of the things happening today and how to apply the principles that they put in place and where they got those principles. That is an incredibly valuable discussion, and you get to be along for the ride.

As do I’m Rick Green. I’m a former Texas legislator and America’s Constitution coach. So it, truly, is an honor for me to get to be here with David Barton, and learn these things. And with Tim Barton, he’s a national speaker and pastor, and president of WallBuilders. You really ought to have him come speak at your church or at your dinner banquet, wherever you can get him in, powerful, powerful speaker. I believe a great voice for America and restoring our Constitutional Republic today. You can do that at wallbuilder.com is where you can book Tim to speak or David as well.

Wallbuilderslive.com that’s where you go if you want archives of this program. In other words, if you missed some shows earlier this week, or last week, or whenever, last couple of months, actually is available there at our website wallbuilderslive.com. So check that out there today. Today is actually Good News Friday. So we always on Friday bring good news.

And I’m telling you, there’s a lot of good things happening. I realized there’s bad, I get it. There’s things that happen every day, and I go, whoa, how do we survive that? And yet we do. And there’s a lot of good stuff happening as well.

And we want to use our Fridays to dive into that good news so that you know these principles work. As Bob McEwen says, the only problem with these founding principles is they only work every time they’re tried. So if we try them, if we put them in place, we get good results. And so we’re going to talk about good results today, and some of the things that are happening out there in the culture here on this Good News Friday.

Alright, guys, let’s jump into some of that good news to see how much we can squeeze into today’s program. David, first piece of good news for today?

David:

I want to go back to a few weeks ago we had elections. We had them in Virginia, New Jersey, we had them across the nation in school board level, and we talked a little bit about some of the outcome. But there’s a lot more that goes with that. But what I want to focus on is a number of school board races that were run because they just don’t get covered nationally. I think we’ve mentioned at the time the 1776 project had endorsed candidates, in 58 school board races, they won 44 of the 58. In Colorado, we were involved in 138 school board candidates there with a number of races, about 55% of them won in Colorado. So we’re seeing that across the nation.

I’ve got this headline here. And it comes out of New Jersey, a senior in New Jersey, High School senior New Jersey, New Jersey took the really rabid blue approach to COVID, and just locked everything down, shut it down, told the kids no school and you can do hybrid learning and you can learn online or whatever. And so the senior it really disrupted his school year, it just disrupted everything that was going on. So he ends up turning around and running for school board against the members who shut down the school. And one of the members, the one he took on, this 19-year-old beat the sitting School Board member by 17 point margin, New Jersey. I love it. A 19-year-old just graduated from high school said you guys really goofed things up at school, we need new blood at school. And so now you got a 19-year-old School Board member.

Rick:

17 points, did you say 17 points?

David:

17 point.

Rick:

That’s a landslide. That’s huge.

David:

That is a slam, bro. That is a knocked out. I mean, we’re seeing this. There’s a community repudiation of what school boards are doing, whether it’s Loudoun County, or whether it’s Fairfax County or whatever that made all the news, yeah, it’s all over the country, people are standing up saying this is wrong. I mean we’ve seen this in just state after state after state. Here’s another one that says “Candidates Opposing Critical Race Theory COVID-19 Mandates Win Minnesota School Board Races”. So even in Minnesota, a very, very, very deep blue state, if you were doing COVID-19 mandates at schools, and if you were teaching critical race theory, which is part of that blue state up there, I mean, they lost a lot of school board seats.

A Healthy Thing

So it really is a healthy thing across America that we’re seeing in state after state, not just red states, but even the blue states people are saying we’ve had enough of this. And this is where the nation starts getting healthy. You get healthy from the bottom up, not the top down. And when people are getting involved in their local school boards and school board races and mayor’s races in City Council, man, this is where it starts getting healthy for America. So this is some of the best news I’ve seen in years, is what’s happening right now at school boards across the country.

Rick:

Man, I don’t think that’s going to end anytime soon, right? I mean, like I remember you saying back, I don’t know, a year or two into the Tea Party, you were like, hey, this thing hasn’t even crested yet, this thing’s going to continue to grow, which it did for several more years. We’re just starting, I think. We’re going to have so much good news to share over the next year or two with the victories just like what you just shared. So this is really good stuff.

David:

When Japan hit Pearl Harbor, there’s a movie that came out in 1970 called Tora! Tora! Tora!, an interesting thing about the World War II movies that came out in the 50s, 60s, 70s, so many of them had the actual lines right out of what happened in that event, whether it was the longest day or the Battle of bulge or patent or anything else…

Tim:

And sometimes even some of the actual people who are from those battles, some from those moments in history who were actually actors in these movies, which sometimes you find out after the fact like that’s who this person was, and you’re like, wait a second, that’s crazy, so that realigns and actually some of the actual real people in these movies as well.

David:

And so in Tora! Tora! Tora! right after they hit Pearl Harbor, one of the Japanese admirals looked at the others and says, I fear that we’ve awakened the sleeping giant. You know, this was meant to demoralize America, but I think it’s going to have the opposite effect on us. And he was right, it awakened a sleeping giant. And I think that’s what’s happening with school boards. They have finally kicked the giant enough to wake him up and now parents have said not anymore. And I don’t think this is going to stop soon. I think it’ll keep going for several cycles, and you’re going to see a lot of changes, a lot of systemic changes all the way down to the state level because this is going to trickle up to state boards of education, which will go into state legislatures, will go into state governors, which are going to trickle up to congressional to federal, everything else. I think this is a really healthy movement.

Rick:

Alright. Well, that’s our first piece of good news. Tim, what’s our next piece of good news?

Tim:

Well, guys, this one is something coming from Democrat mayors across the US. If we look back to November where there were some elections in early November, among those elections, there were several mayoral seats. We’ve already talked, dad, about school board seats, some of the city council races that happened.

But what’s interesting is there were some information that came out regarding some of these mayors in these races. And again, we’re talking about Democrat mayors. And obviously, we remember probably everybody listening remembers, over the last couple of years, you have had leading voices from the Democrat Party, Democrat politicians who have been calling for the defunding of police, and for multiple reasons because police were racist, and the institution was systemically racist, and there’s a lot of crazy bogus claims being made about police.

What’s interesting, is what they saw as in the data of the polling coming up into that November election was that most Democrat mayors and we’re talking about major cities from Atlanta to Minneapolis, these mayors shifted their tone in position to where they were no longer saying we need to defund the police, they were saying we need more police, we need police on the streets to keep us safe. All of a sudden, police were the good guys, police were the heroes. And there’s a couple reasons for this.

This article outlines, the title is “Democratic Cries to ‘defund Police’ Fade in U.S. Mayoral Races as Crime Surges”. So the title identifies, part of the reason they changed their tone was because crime is surging. Among crime surging, the FBI reports that in 2020, there was a 30% increase in murders. And actually, many of those murders, largely big cities is where these murder rates are increasing the most, where most of these murders are happening.

And so you have these cities where they were saying defund the police, whether it be Atlanta or Minneapolis, we can go down the list of some of these major cities that were crying for removal of police force, whatever else, the American people do not buy into that. Which is why coming into these elections, you see that the tone has shifted. And one of the things, dad, one of the comments you made is experience often fixes bad theology or bad positions.

You can hold a bad position, and you can get away with it until that bad idea meets reality, and then when it meets reality, you are confronted with was this really a bad idea, and is this kind of a hill I want to die on?

And right now, a lot of Democrat mayors and Democrat leaders are rethinking that position, actually changing positions. And the article even points out, some people speculate that this could be a more politically motivated move than people realize because maybe these Democrats were seeing the polling numbers from Americans to realizing that that is not where American people are going and we need to change position.

Changing Policies

David:

But by the way, the way you just said that I’m going to throw an old axiom in. And the average politician, not statesman, politician often says, I want to see where the people are going so I can get in front of them and be their leader. And that’s exactly what it sounds like is happening here.

Tim:

Well, one of the things that unfortunately we know is true is so many politicians, they are more concerned about their next election, they’re more concerned about being reelected than anything else. And then this is why when you go back to President Trump talking about the swamp in Washington, DC, and we can look now, at Republicans and Democrats in Congress, when you see that 13 Republicans sign up with all of the Democrats to pass this infrastructure package that was 1.2 trillion, which reality people are estimating it’s going to be more like 4 trillion in realized dollars.

David:

The government has told us it’s not going to add anything to the debt, we can spend nearly 2 trillion and it will not increase the debt. Please tell me how that’s possible?

Tim:

Well, because they’re going to take it out of taxes. That’s how. That’s literally what they said. We’re going to tax you for this, therefore, we will not increase the debt. Now, again, all of this is nonsense. We know it’s not true. But the point is that you had 13 Republicans joining with these Democrats. And actually, you had some Democrats who didn’t vote for the infrastructure package because it wasn’t woke enough for them, it wasn’t progressive enough, but had it not been for Republicans joining the Democrats, they wouldn’t have had the votes they needed to get this thing done.

All that being said, we know there’s a swamp in DC and it doesn’t necessarily always matter what political party you’re talking about. There are swampy creatures on both sides of that political aisle. With it being said, when we are looking at polling right now, 47% of Americans say they want police spending increased. And that’s up from last year, there was only about 31% who said we need more funding for police. So we’re seeing an increase in that. Last year, there was 25% of Americans that said we should decrease funding for police, right now that number is only 15%. So more people are saying we need more funding for police, fewer people are saying we need less funding.

And here’s the good news, is that right now both sides are realizing this. And even if it is a political ploy for some people on whatever side of the aisle they’re on, the good news is we do you know that when you have more police officers, it does help reduce crime, it does help bring safety to individuals on some level. So this is a good thing, even though there’s a lot of political conversation that can be had in the midst of it. It is good that both sides of the aisle are now finally acknowledging that police are not evil, that it’s not a systemically racist institution, and that having more police officers in our cities does help our cities be safer.

Rick:

Very good news. Guys, we’re going to take a quick break. Chad Hennings, former NFL football player from, of course, the Dallas Cowboys is going to be with us when we come back from the break. And it has to do with a Supreme Court case. So what is a former Dallas Cowboy have to do with the Supreme Court, guys?

David:

But what happened was in Bremerton, Washington, you had a coach there, Coach Kennedy, that after the football game, and he was a military guy, he was a veteran, coach loved him, the city loved and people loved him. But after the game, as his kids, if they won or lost, didn’t matter, he would go and kneel in the middle of field by himself just off the side and offer a prayer of thanks to God for protecting the kids, and helping whatever. And they file suit against that. Said, you can’t do that, you’re a coach; as a coach, you cannot pray in public, period.

And so the lower courts have held that up said, yeah, coach can’t pray in public, that can’t be done. Even if it’s private, even if no kids are there with them, even if it’s not officially part of anything going on, even himself, he can’t go over because he’s a public figure and can’t pray in public. So what’s happened, it’s worked its way to the US Supreme Court to ask the US Supreme Court to pick up the case and decide this issue. We think they’re going to pick it up. But to help do that, a number of pro football players and other famous football players and coaches signed on to a brief to the Supreme Court saying, hey, you really need to clear this up. Are you really saying somebody in public I can’t pray, even individually, even privately?

And so Chad Hennings is one of those who signed on to the Supreme Court brief asking the Supreme Court to pick up this case and decide that it is okay for coaches, and others to be able to pray in public if they want to.

Rick:

Former NFL great to Super Bowl champion, Chad Hennings, our special guests when we return a WallBuilders Live.

WORLD WAR II VETERANS

Hey, friends, if you’ve been listening to WallBuilders Live for very long at all, you know how much we respect our veterans and how appreciative we are of the sacrifice they make to make our freedoms possible. One of the ways that we love to honor those veterans is to tell their stories here on WallBuilders Live. Once in a while we get an opportunity to interview veterans that have served on those front lines that have made incredible sacrifices have amazing stories that we want to share with the American people.

One of the very special things we get to do is interview World War II veterans. You’ve heard those interviews here on WallBuilders Live from folks that were in the Band of Brothers to folks like Edgar Harrell that survived being Indianapolis, there’s so many other great stories you’ve heard on WallBuilders Live. You have friends and family that also serve.

If you have World War II veterans in your family that you would like to have their story shared here on WallBuilders Live, please email us at radio@wallbuilders.com, radio@wallbuilders.com. Give us a brief summary of the story and we’ll set up an interview. Thanks so much for sharing here on WallBuilders Live.

Rick:

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live. Thanks for staying with us. Chad Hennings back with us, Super Bowl champ, fighter pilot, successful businessman, and best of all great ministry reaching out and discipling young men. Chad, good to have you back, man. Thanks for coming on WallBuilders Live.

Chad:

My pleasure.

Rick:

Hey, excited to see you’re involved in this case defending the coach Kennedy. This case been going on for years and just the basic right of a coach to be able to pray. What got you involved with this case with our buddy Kelly Shackleford over at First Liberty?

Chad:

Well, initially, I was interested when I heard about a football coach that just benignly taking a knee just to give honor and glory to God and a coach that happened to be a former Marine too by the way, and that he was fired because of that. I mean, I made national news. And then when Kelly Shackleford had asked if I’d be willing to write an amicus brief along with Steve Largent Hall of Fame wide receiver from Tulsa, Oklahoma that played for Seattle Seahawks? You know, of course, I would because this just has ramifications throughout our whole country regarding our religious freedoms and liberties, and primarily because it entails what they call a Smith Clause that has just been bad precedent and bad law for the last several decades.

Welcome Chad Hennings

Rick:

Chad, when you talk to people, are you getting the same feeling I am that they’re just fed up with this stuff, they’re tired of the government telling us what we can and can’t do, especially when it comes to living out our faith among our friends and family and our teammates and that sort of thing? It just seems like people are kind of reaching a tipping point on this?

Chad:

I think so. And I think they’ve woken a sleeping giant, let me use the phrase from World War II, that people have been apathetic, I think, because we have never had to have our faith challenged in the past. And now people are realizing that, our freedoms are not free, that we do have to take a stand. And it’s not just our elected officials, it’s each and every one of us in our own capacity under our own influence. And that’s why, to your point, I do see a lot of people standing up, if not me, then who, and putting my stick in the ground and say, enough.

Rick:

Yes, it seems like to the last couple years, with churches shutting down and all the government mandates and everything else, like you said, an awakening is occurring. So, people that hadn’t thought about this before, so if you hadn’t served in the military and thought about what you’re sacrificing for, you hadn’t served in public office and dealt with a lot of these issues, you just kind of coast through life and enjoy the freedom that other people are paying the price for.

But now all of a sudden, everybody’s going wait a minute, this is hitting my business, it’s hitting my backyard, it’s hitting my kid. And that has a lot to do, I think, with a wake-up call.

So that’s why these cases are so important right now because when you do these amicus brief like this and these cases go to the Supreme Court, people get educated, they start hearing about this issue for the first time, and they have to start thinking about where is the line, what can we do and what can’t we do?

So, very thankful that you guys are doing this and bringing that attention to the issue. I can’t let you go without getting an update just on how things are going with your ministry and other activities that you’re involved in?

Chad:

Well, well, thank you for asking. My ministry, Wingmen has been going phenomenal. It’s, I think, again, just like with our religious liberties, men in general have been beaten up so much with regards to what is biblical masculinity? You know, a lot of young men today don’t know what that is.

Rick:

Yeah, man, I think we missed the mark on passing that father to son and so the ministry that you’re doing is filling that gap and for young men, especially. But frankly, I mean, you know, guys in our generation that never had that are also discovering what it means to be a godly man at this point. It’s not too late. I mean, even for people in their 40s, 50s, 60s, what a great opportunity to start studying manhood and then pass it on to the young men in their lives.

Chad:

Exactly. And for men to be able to be transparent, to be open to other relationships, to admit fallibility, to admit sin, to reach out to other guys and repent, that’s what it’s all about. And we’re stronger together as the body of Christ than we are as lone wolves.

Rick:

Powerful. Powerful. Wingmen.org is the website. Wingmen.org. Go there to find out more. Chad, God bless you, brother. Appreciate all that you’re doing. Appreciate you giving our listeners sometime today.

Chad:

Thank you very much.

Rick:

Stay with us, you’re listening to WallBuilders Live.

AMERICAN HISTORY

This is Tim Barton from WallBuilders with another moment from American history. After the final victory at Yorktown, the Continental Army awaited the outcome of peace negotiations with the Great Britain. Pastor Israel Evans, a chaplain in the army proposed to George Washington that they build a structure where church services could be held during the month of waiting. Washington approved the plan and urges officers to ensure that the soldiers attended service.

Pastor Evans further knew, if we were to secure the liberties they had fought for, sound education would be crucial. He declared, “Every parent and every friend of the freedom of his country ought to be attentive to the improvement of our youth in the principles of freedom and good government, and then the people will stand fast in their liberty for a long time.” Our schools today need to return to teaching the principles of freedom and good government in order for America to survive and prosper.

For more information about Pastor Israel Evans and other colonial patriots, go to wallbuilders.com.

Rick:

We’re back with David and Tim now to get some more good news on our Good News Friday. Special thanks to Chad Hennings for joining us today for some good news. And David, I think you got the next piece of good news.

David:

Yeah, the next one I’ve got is a repeat of what we’ve done for the last two or three weeks. And I’ve said over that period of time because every week I say here’s some more federal courts who struck down the Biden vaccine mandate. And I’ve speculated that he’s getting more mileage out of this just announcing as forcefully as he did that no court is going to really hold this up. And if they do, there’s all these state attorney generals getting ready to follow suit as soon as that order comes out. And I’m not convinced that order is going to come out. It may. But when it does, it’s going to get enjoined.

But here’s two more headlines. Since last week and we cover this, “Breaking: Federal Court Stops Biden Administration’s National Vaccine Mandate”. Here’s another, different Judge, “Biden Administration cannot discipline or fire unvaccinated employees, a DC judge rules”. And this covered military. This covered employees. One of these cover hospital workers. I mean, again, we just have case after case after case. Every week, it seems like there’s 2, 3, 4 more new cases, so that’s two more. And that’s good news that the court continues to say Biden cannot do what he threatened everybody to do three or four months ago, however long it’s been.

And all these companies keep doing it by themselves without any federal impetus behind it. We’ve seen the airlines and others do it. So I think this thing will eventually fall apart.

But another story I want to cover that, it says “Texas Woman Spots Tiny Feet in Lake, Leaps in to Save Drowning Toddler”. So what happened was at a city park here in the north Texas area, Fort Worth area, there was a woman who heard another woman screaming, and she looked out and she saw a little toddlers feet upside down sticking out of the water, the toddler gone in the water, and was drowning. Apparently, the other woman couldn’t swim, and couldn’t go in after the toddler.

So this lady goes in and grabs a toddler and brings the toddler out and starts doing CPR at least trying to remember how her mother apparently did CPR and was a nurse, and she’s trying to remember how to do this. And so she contacts all the right people, they get the CPR down, it saves the toddler, which is a great story that it saved the life of this toddler. But I want to make a little point here, if I can.

I’m just going to encourage every single parent anywhere. If you’ve got kids, teach them how to swim, even infants when they’re just newborns, because kids for whatever reason love to go to water. And we just had an incident in the town where our ranches just in the last couple of weeks, where a mom just turned her back for a minute and a kid went over and crawled into the pool and drown as a result, very tragic.

Prepare Your Children

And so this kind of tragedy stuff, if you can get into classes with your infant kids or your toddler kids, these kids learn how to roll over on their back and keep their head above water, keep their mouth pointed up so they can breathe, and it’ll save so many lives. It’s the same thing we say with guns. We support the right of everyone to own guns, to have guns. But we also encourage and really as strongly as we can insist that you get good gun training because you don’t want gun accidents.

And accidents happen when you really don’t know how to use a gun. So if you own a gun and have a gun, you have the Second Amendment to do that. But you really have a responsibility also to learn how to use that gun safely. And I would encourage that this is a great story save the toddler’s life, but at the same time parents, grandparents, whoever, let me encourage you to have those young kids learn how to swim, learn how to save their life.

Rick:

Alright, Tim Barton, what’s our next piece of good news?

Tim:

Alright, guys, let’s do something trending on social media a couple of weeks ago. Chris Pratt initially was criticized, he had a post about his wife, Catherine, and they have a daughter and he was saying how wonderful his wife was, and excited to have this healthy daughter. And a seemingly like benign post, no big deal, he was criticized like crazy and in the midst of wokeness and cancel culture. This kind of stuff does unfortunately happen from time to time.

One of the things he was criticized for was he was married prior to the marriage and now and he and his previous wife had a child who was born prematurely, and had some medical issues. In the midst having medical issues, he was criticized that he was praising this wife for helping him have a healthy daughter, and his former wife, they didn’t have a healthy child. I mean, just the dumb stuff that people are going to say instead of being able to recognize and acknowledge he was just grateful to God for this gift of what he and his wife were able to have this daughter and she’s healthy and great.

Anyway, all that being said, he put on his social media that he had gone to bed very depressed, very sad. He woke up and just didn’t feel like working out just felt overwhelmed. But here’s what’s interesting, he said, I knew that if I put on my Christian playlist, and I got out in the woods and ran that I’d feel better. And sure enough, he put on a Christian playlist, he went out in the woods, he ran, he came back and he said all glory to God, and gave God credit for helping him get out of the depression from the criticism he received from the woke mob, etc.

But guys, here’s what’s interesting. I mean, beyond the fact that we’re not getting into his past, his background, and his parenting whatever else. When you have someone who is a noted Hollywood star, the level of Chris Pratt, and he’s acknowledging that in hard times you turn to God and you do something that builds your faith, you go get out in nature and you listen to Christian music and just get your head right and all glory to God that God’s helped him through this, giving God credit, this is something that is very unique, unfortunately, in Hollywood.

Local Races, Funding Police, Chad Hennings, And More – On Good News Friday

I mean, dad, we’ve talked about the fact if you go back to that 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, Hollywood look very, very different with a lot of the movies, a lot of the wholesome mentality of things that were there, and we don’t see that very much today. But it is unique and it’s special when you do see someone again, the star level of a Chris Pratt, who on his social media is talking about his faith, and he’s pretty open about his faith. For people who have paid attention in the last couple years, he’s posted a lot of things related to faith. And definitely, I mean, he and his wife are faithful church attenders. He definitely seems to be someone who is devout and sincere in his Christian belief.

But it was just cool to see him post on social media where the headline was “All glory to God”, and he tells the story. But he’s acknowledging first, we’re just giving God glory for God helping them overcome this difficult time in his life. So, just cool to see from Chris Pratt.

Rick:

Alright, guys, we are not going to get anywhere near through the stack of good news that you’ve piled up in the last few weeks. So we’ll dive into more of that next week on Good News Friday. But for folks that want more right now, right this minute, go to wallbuilderslive.com. You can get some more good news thereby going into the archive section and listening to previous Friday programs.

And frankly, a lot of our interview programs also are packed full of good news as well. Now we’re not Pollyanna, we’re not just waving the flag and saying oh, hope everything works out. I mean, we’re diving into the issues of the day. We’re looking at everything from a biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective.

But not only do we look at that issue and what’s actually happening, we talk about solutions for how to turn this culture around, how to be true salt and light. So thank you for listening, share the program with your friends and family, and join us in being salt and light in the community. Biblical values, that’s where all the answers are right there in God’s word. And you can be the one to apply that in your community. Thanks so much for listening today. You’ve been listening to WallBuilders Live.
