Faith And The Culture
Rick:
Welcome to the intersection of faith and the culture. This is WallBuilders Live! Where we”re talking about today”s hottest topics on policy, faith, and the culture. But every topic, we look at it from a biblical perspective, a constitutional perspective, and an historical perspective. That way we know we”re going to get the right perspective on that issue, and know what our position should be, and know how to influence the culture around us.
We’re here with David Barton, America’s premier historian and the founder of WallBuilders. Tim Barton is with us, national speaker and pastor, and president of WallBuilders. And then my name is Rick Green, I’m a former Texas legislator.
Check us out at WallBuildersLive.com for more information or go to WallBuilders.com. Now, that’s two different websites. WallBuilders Live, that’s the radio site, that gives you a chance to look back in the archives over the last few weeks and catch up on some of the programming you might have missed.
WallBuilders.com gives you the chance to get some fantastic tools to equip and inspire your family to be better citizens, to simply understand how our system works, and what you can do to help restore it, and protect it. All of that available at WallBuilders.com. And that’s also the place to go if you’d like to come alongside us and make a contribution. We’re live listener supported program, so it’s your support that makes it possible. So, we appreciate you considering us as one of those organizations that you support on a regular basis.
Well, guys, later in the program we”ve got a special guest. This is a little bit of a different program for us. It’s actually an incredible testimony and it’s somebody that most people listening right now may or may not recognize his name when we say his name, but, man, they’ll recognize his voice and they’ve probably seen him on an infomercial. His name is Mike Lindell. You guys know what his product is.
Making Faith Part Of Everyday Life
Tim:
Yeah, My Pillow, and actually, for listeners that listen to conservative radio in general, he advertises with, seems like, every conservative radio talk show out there. So, My Pillow was what at least I know him for and I don’t know if he does other infomercials for other things as well. But My Pillow I’m definitely familiar with. Although, recently we saw him giving a testimony. And obviously, we’re a Christian program and we’re trying to help faith be a part of everyday life. So, whether it’s government, or politics, or education, or business, we kind of try to help make things very practical.
But looking at it from this constitutional, biblical, perspective, because we are people of faith, seeing someone who certainly is very successful in business right now, has been very blessed, he’s been in meetings with President Trump. When Trump has done announcements on different TV and social media, you’ve seen Mike Lindell with Trump, around Trump. So, certainly a face that possibly you would recognize if you’ve seen or watched some of these these things that Trump has done with different business leaders.
But his testimony of where he was just into all kinds of things that were destroying his life and then how God got a hold of him is so remarkable.
Obviously, as Christians  hearing this testimony and what God can do in a life. And then how God restored, and what God is doing now, it’s something that we absolutely are in favor of encouraging and reminding people of God’s grace, and forgiveness, and mercy, and how God can restore and promote. And Mike is just a great example of that.
Rick:
Well, and maybe most. I don’t know if his story is well-known by most people. I did not know it – I certainly didn’t know this is now 10 years celebrating, really this week celebrating, being clean from crack cocaine. You talk about sobriety for 10 years from something that in the past I have often heard is one of, if not the toughest, to kick. And here’s a guy that, man, his– he cried out to the Lord and his prayers were answered.
Now he is reaching out and, frankly, saving lives all over the country because of what he’s doing with the money that he made on My Pillow to try to spread the gospel and try to get people to have the same sobriety that he’s got. So, it”s a really cool story, really neat story, and just awesome how God’s using him with a very big platform at this point.
Breaking Free
David:
Well, Rick, what you were saying even in the sense of how he overcame crack cocaine, that, as you acknowledged, that’s one of the hardest drugs to overcome. What I’ve been told is even if you kick the habit you’re likely to go back to it because it is such a gripping addiction it is so– And yet when you look at the Scriptures, you look at what happened in Revelation 12:11 it says that they overcame by the blood of the Lamb, but it says “by the word of their testimony.”
And he’s been really good about being out front with what the Lord has done for him and he’s done it in a very public setting. He’s not been coy about trying to just hint that the Lord– He’s been really bold about what the Lord did for him. And that’s one of the ways also to overcome something in your life is be very public about what God has done to help you. And that certainly appears to be one of the things that has worked in Mike’s favor to help him really break free from an addiction that’s considered one of the strongest addictions out there.
Rick:
Well, that”s going to be a powerful interview today. I’m looking forward to get to talk to him. I”ve never had the chance to meet him or talk to him. We’ve seen him on the campaign trail with President Trump and involved in a lot of different things in the country. And, again, using that platform in a great way. So, looking forward to visiting with him. Stay with us, folks. Mike Lindell, our special guest. You’re listening to WallBuilders Live.

Welcome back. Thanks for staying with us here on WallBuilders Live. Excited to have Mike Lindell with us. You’ve seen him on television. If you hadn’t seen him, I’m sure you’ve seen the My Pillow infomercial. Most of our audience will know Mike from his support of Donald Trump, but even seeing him on the campaign trail some and we’re thrilled to have him. Mike, good to have you on, man.
Mike Lindell:
It’s great to be here.
Rick:
You’ve got quite a story. Most folks that are listening to our program across the country know you from the infomercial, of course, and the success of My Pillow. David and Tim Barton and myself were all blown away by your testimony when you shared it with Hannity, and seeing it other places, and just amazing what God’s done in your life.
A Platform For Something Much Bigger
Mike Lindell:
Yeah. I was a crack cocaine addict. I was a cocaine addict for 20 years and a crack cocaine addict for about 10. And January 16th, I invented My Pillow in 2005. On January 16, 2009 that was the day that I quit crack and everything overnight. I prayed to God, I said, “I want to be freed of the desires for all these addictions.” And if I”d have waited one more day my calling, my purpose– because I knew My Pillow was just a platform for something a lot bigger.
And then two months later I actually went to my church to a faith based treatment center, it was outpatient, and I learned where my addictions came from in the first place. It wasn’t like other treatment centers I had been in where, “Oh, yeah, you”ve hurt your family, you’ve hurt your kids, and you’ve spent all your money.” Well, addicts already know that. Now we just feel even worse than we did when we went in–
Rick:
Right.
Mike Lindell:
–and then now when we come out we don’t even have our drugs. But I was freed of the addictions then. And in 2011 we did my first– one of our first infomercials and we went from five employees to five hundred and it just exploded. But–
Rick:
And that was in a really short period time, right? That was like 60 days you went from–
Mike Lindell:
Yeah, 40 days. We went from five to five hundred employees.
Rick:
Wow. Wow.
“This Will Never Work”
Mike Lindell:
Interesting fact – when we did that infomercial I told my friends and family, “Let’s all pull our money and we’ll– we’re going to be the biggest company ever.” And we went to do this infomercial, I wanted to do it with a real audience, and just a friend of mine, and all these producers said, “This will never work.” Even the night before, I was doing my reads and the guy texts– the one producer texted the other guy and said, “This is the worst guy I’ve ever seen. He will never make it.” And when–
Rick:
But the Lord had other plans.
Mike Lindell:
Yeah, absolutely. The next– well, I was so afraid of– I had a spirit of unworthiness and of being rejected. You can’t be rejected if you don’t talk to people. My family divorced when I was seven, and I was the oldest child, and I was put into a new school, and I became– either I would show off or be very shy. But that day of the infomercial when we did the first line, it took nine takes. And they said, “You”ve just got to take away the teleprompter.” And we put a table out in front of me like I had done shows for years, like pillow shows, and I was able to do this naturally.
Rick:
Show’s meaning like conventions or whatever not TV shows.
Mike Lindell:
Yeah, home shows and fairs where if I had a table in front of me I didn’t need any * or anything. I could talk to people because they would come up to me and tell me how I– my heart was to help people and people would come up and tell me, “Wow, this pillow changed my life and all this.” And it would make me feel good inside. So, it’s never been about the money for me. It’s been helping people.
Relationship Is Totally Different
Rick:
Yeah. And it comes across, man, in everything I’ve seen you on. So, this is– you just past ten years of being clean. So, ten years – quite a celebration.
Mike Lindell:
Absolutely. And, for me, I didn’t do a full surrender to Jesus until February 18, 2017. So, Â I met a gal in 2014, the summer, and she had this relationship with Jesus that I didn’t, I”m going “Wow”. I wore my cross on TV and stuff and prayed every time something would go wrong, but I didn’t have that relationship. And–
Rick:
Totally different.
Mike Lindell:
Totally Different. Things started happening to me that doesn’t happen to anybody. I was invited to the National Prayer Breakfast in 2016, picked out of 12 people, I was one of them picked with Ben Carson who then was still running for president. And that summer, Donald Trump reached out to me in a private meeting talking about Made in America and the first thing he said when I walked in, he goes, “Mike, you always wear your cross. Are you a Christian?” I said, “Yes, Mr. Trump, and this is a divine appointment.”
Rick:
Wow.
Mike Lindell:
I went all in, but what that did to me was even my friends saying, “Here’s a crack addict and now he’s sitting–“– I got into the White House, we had a manufacturer round table and I said, “Who’s sitting there?” They said, “The president is. He went to sit by you.” And I’m going– For me, it was surreal and it is still. It’s like living inside a movie and I can only *–
Rick:
And, Mike, I’ve seen I’ve seen that video. And I think President Trump turns to you and says, “What do you think, Mike?” I don’t know, a dozen times. He keeps referring back.
A Big Platform For Evangelism
Mike Lindell:
Yeah. I’ve just thought– it still is like living inside a movie. And now I”ve become very good friends with Ben Carson, and Candy, and all these people. I’ve been put into this big platform now for evangelism. I spoke to 50,000 millennials at U.S. * stadium, told my story–
Rick:
Oh, wow.
Mike Lindell:
Prayed, prayed, prayed with them all. And then three weeks later I was at– my niece and nephew and my granddaughter– we were at this amusement park in Minnesota here. This is after I spoke to those 50,000 millennials, and told my story, and prayed. All these millennials kept coming up to me going, “Wow, your story of hope has changed my life.” Â I know Jesus, I surrendered, and all this. Finally my granddaughter, she goes, “He”s my grandpa and we need to go on rides.” But it was just amazing. And all the fruition of what God”s put me in–
Rick:
Yeah.
Mike Lindell:
–this big platform of hope. And now–
Rick:
Now, Mike, take me back to that night on January 16th, 2009 – when you prayed that prayer and asked God to take away this addiction, what happened?
Mike Lindell:
I woke up the next day– and by the way, that day– they say, “Was that your bottom?” Everybody talks about bottoms. I didn’t have any money or anything left, but money was never my driver. But I knew that everyone’s got a calling and I knew my– this platform, this calling, it was going to be gone. It was like an old fashioned TV where you turned it off, the black and white, and it would go down to this little blue dot. And I knew one more day and that dot was going out forever. Well, I woke up– I prayed that prayer and–
Rick:
And this was– I’m sorry to interrupt you, Mike, but I forgot to ask you about what had happened right before that. Because I your story’s amazing. You had three dealers actually be the ones to intervene.
Mike Lindell:
Right. Well, early in– a bunch of things happened in 2008. Now, you realize in 2007 I had lost a 20 year marriage, people were taking my company, what little I had left, everything. These people that I broke bread with and they, all of a sudden, they’re taking my company and there’s all these adversities kept happening.
Well, then in the spring of 2008, you’re right, I was up 14 days and I was downtown Minneapolis, the worst part of Minneapolis. And three of the biggest drug dealers, they all knew of each other, but didn’t know each other personally. I come out of a * down there and they go– I go, “What’s going on they go?” And they go this intervention where they go, “Mike”s been up 14 days and I want your guys to cut him off, and I cut them off.” And I’m arguing with them.
Well, two of them left and then it’s down to the one guy and he finally went to sleep. And I went down to the streets of Minneapolis and said– tried to buy crack, couldn’t buy it anywhere, came back up at 02:30 in the morning and he’s sitting up for me waiting, and he goes, “Man,” he said, “Get over here. I’m going to take a picture with your phone.” He said, “You’re going to need this for that book you’ve been telling us about.” He said, “You’ve been telling us for years that this pillow, this My Pillow thing, is just a platform for God and you’re going to come back and help us all someday.” And he goes, “But we’re not going to let you die on us.”
Rick:
Wow.
Sent By God
Mike Lindell:
And I would always tell these guys– because I would see in dreams that someday I would quit and I would come back and help them all out of addiction and all this stuff that goes on. And then later that year in December, a friend of mine came to me and he had been clean for three years. He had found Jesus and three years that he had– he was my equal. He had started cocaine about the same time, about the same age, we had both switched to crack cocaine at the same time, and I hadn’t seen him in a year.
And here he came in, I was all by myself out at this old house, and had lost everything I got. And now this is December of  2008 and he comes in and I go, “Dick, what are you doing?” He goes, “Well, the Lord let me here.” He goes, “What’s going on?” And I said, “Well, as long as you’re here”, I said, “Is it boring?” And he goes, “No, man, it ain”t boring.” And I had all these questions for him that only he could answer because I trusted him because he was like my equal.
Rick:
Yeah.
Mike Lindell:
So, now, this Recovery Network I started, this Lindell Recovery Network that I’m going to be launching in a month or so, I’m going to take– it”s a website where I’m going to take addicts. If an addict comes there and I’ll be like their tour guide. They’ll put in their age and their addiction and all these stories of hope will come down their age and what they’re addicted to. Like a 22 year old opiate addict might not relate to a 50 year old meth addict. So, the closer you get to a match, “That guy made it through.” That’s your hope.
Rick:
Wow.
Help and Hope
Mike Lindell:
And I’m going to say then over here, all these treatment centers I have vetted that are all faith based. Best ones in the world – Union Gospel, Salvation Army, Teen Challenge – all these I”ve vetted. We’ve– I’ve been vetting them for over a year now. I tell the addict, “You guys go in here. This is going to work. It’s an amazing success rate. Here’s where you got the hope.
Now, here’s the help. “And when they get out I’m going to say, “You guys, I’m going to be there for you. I’m going to have paid mentors all over the country that are full time that’s all they do is mentor these guys coming out. There’s going to be jobs, 100 percent employment where they come out. It’s going to be amazing.
Rick:
Wow. Wow.
Mike Lindell:
Any addict that’s out there, one of the biggest things that people don’t realize is addiction is so much work. People say to me all the time, “Mike, how do you– you work all the time.” I go, “No, number one, I love my job. And number two, I’ll tell you what work is. Work is addiction.” Try to be an addict and how much work it is. And every day the work that goes into being an addict is horrific.
Rick:
So, you’re addressing, in your case, God miraculously took that away from you. I remember hearing you talk about–
Mike Lindell:
Right.
Rick:
–that the next day it was gone.
Mike Lindell:
Right.
Rick:
That doesn’t happen to most people.
Why Was I Here In The First Place?
Mike Lindell:
Right.
Rick:
So, you’re you’re saying, “Hey, give them the full treatment for the long term to really help them overcome this.”
Mike Lindell:
Well, there’s two fold there. Now, when I said before earlier I was freed of the desire overnight, okay.
Rick:
But the physical addiction was still there.
Mike Lindell:
No, no, no, I was free. The physical addiction wasn’t there. The physical addiction was gone.
Rick:
Oh, it was gone. Okay.
Mike Lindell:
But what I did two months later is I went to that faith based outpatient center because I wanted to find out why was I an addict in the first place. And I wanted to be proactive so whatever I had got healed.
Rick:
Yeah.
Mike Lindell:
Whatever that– because addiction is just a mask for pain.
Rick:
That”s right.
Mike Lindell:
Most addictions come from childhood. It can be divorced, it can be fatherlessness, it can be trauma. If you’re veterans, obviously, that’s the worst trauma, you can get traumatized in battle or whatever. But that’s where addictions– people aren”t born addicts. They’re there to mask pain which is–
Rick:
That’s right.
It”s A Miracle
Mike Lindell:
–in my case, my case was unworthiness. I had a fear of rejection, that I wasn’t good enough, and I would– I lived in Las Vegas once for two months and never talked to a soul because I would not want to talk to people because– If you”d have told me I’d be speaking someday I would have said, *laughter*–
Rick:
Wow. Wow.
Mike Lindell:
Because I couldn’t talk. I absolutely could not talk .
Rick:
So, God– you must think today God must have a sense of humor if he took you from that to what you’re doing now talking.
Mike Lindell:
Yeah.
Rick:
That’s what you do now. That’s amazing.
Mike Lindell:
Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, it is. It’s a miracle.
Rick:
That’s incredible. Well, when you launch the treatment website, please come back on, and tell us about it again, and let us get people, lead people, to it.
Mike Lindell:
Absolutely.
No Matter What It Is
Rick:
What you’re saying is so right. Every addiction – I don’t care what it is – drugs, pornography, drinking, whatever it is–
Mike Lindell:
Right.
–it’s medicating that pain deep down. And, unfortunately, the church, we don’t do a great job of of getting to that, and being willing to have those conversations, and getting down to that. So, I love what you’re doing–
Mike Lindell:
Yeah.
Rick:
–I really want to share it. And we just appreciate you coming on. What a great story. What a great testimony. God bless you, brother. Look forward to getting you back when you’re ready to launch that website.
Mike Lindell:
Absolutely. It’s going to be amazing. God bless you. And we”ll– it”ll be soon. We’ll get ahold of you.
Rick:
That sounds great. That was Mike Lindell. You can get his entire story, it”s actually a one hour show about his story. It”s called “The Mike Lindell Story An American Dream” that’s available at MichaelJLindell.com. We’ll have a link today so you can easily get over there or you can just go to MyPillow.com and follow those links as well. Amazing story. We’ll be right back with David and Tim Barton.
This Precarious Moment Book
David:
This is David Barton. I want to let about a brand new book we have called This Precarious Moment: Six Urgent Steps That Will Save You, Your family, and Our Country. Jim Garlow and I have co-authored this book and we take six issues that are hot in the culture right now.
Issues that we’re dealing with, issues such as immigration, race relations, our relationship with Israel, the rising generation Millennials, and the absence of the church in the culture wars, and where American heritage is, our godly heritage. We look at all six of those issues right now that are under attack and we give you both Biblical and historical perspective on those issues that provide solutions on what each of us can do right now to make a difference.
These are all problems that are solvable if we’ll get involved. So you can grab the book This Precarious Moment and find out what you can do to make a difference. This Precarious Moment is available at WallBuilders.com.
Just Awesome To See God Work
Rick:
Thanks for staying with us here on WallBuilders Live. We’re back now with David and Tim Barton. Special thanks to Mike Lindell for joining us today as well.
David, Tim, great, great, testimony of course. I think something that everyone listening right now – regardless of whether you’ve ever been– had a problem with drugs, or whatever else out there, just awesome to hear how God worked in him in a miraculous way. Some of it even almost comical. He talked about his three dealers actually came together and had an intervention. God can use anybody, right? You don’t expect a drug dealer to say, “I’m not going to give you any more drugs.”
Tim:
And apparently to get the word out on the street. Because when you go out at night looking for it and you can’t find anybody on the street–
Rick:
Right.
Tim:
–apparently the dealers like, “Hey, stay away from this dude. He’s no good.” But it made me think how strong must the calling of God been on his life that it’s evidence even the drug dealers.
Rick:
Amen.
Tim:
Where, as weird as it would be, right, for him to be on drugs and telling the drug dealers, “Hey, guys, one day I’m going to change this and I’m going to come back and I’m going help you out.” And for them to go this isn’t just some crazy guy saying ridiculous things because he’s on drugs. For them to go, “No, man, we believe you, absolutely. And therefore we’re going to cut you off.” This is just– it seems almost far fetched in my mind. And yet the way that God was able to work in this situation, and how God delivered him out of that, is such an incredible testimony.
It Should Be An Encouragement For All Of Us
Tim:
Rick, as you mentioned, it should be encouragement for all of us. Wherever we are in our life, whatever we’re dealing with in our life, there is nothing so big that God can’t help us overcome, that God can’t redeem us from that, that God can’t love us through that. So, just incredible to hear that. Obviously, the doors that God has opened to him now that– how many other people out there would you think, “No, these guys are much more stable, are much better.”
David:
Let me jump in – more specifically, I was absolutely thrilled that he’s speaking to a stadium of 50,000 millennials – that age group. Not a stadium of 50,000, but 50,000 of the next generation. And all the bad stats that millennials have, and all the stereotypes they have. And here’s this guy who is both– which proved to me again what we already know is millennials are into relationships. They want genuine people and here’s a genuine guy. So, I’m thrilled to see that that was a stadium of 50,000 millennials.
Tim:
Well, yeah, what we’ve said before with especially with the next generation is they don’t want to see someone who’s perfect, they won’t see someone who’s genuine.
Rick:
That’s right.
God Can Work Through This
Tim:
And when you can be open and say, “Hey, guys, look, this is where I came from, this is what I dealt with, here’s how God helped me overcome.” When they see somebody being genuine, there’s something that resonates in our spirits, in our hearts, and goes, “Wow, I appreciate that person for being genuine, for not being fake.” We live in a world full of fake. And this guy – you could hear the interview, right. He’s so genuine and how God has used that now to where as he was mentioning– And, Rick, you commented on it to0 where Trump saying, “Hey, so, Mike, what do you think? Good deal? Mike, what you think?”
Rick:
Right.
Tim:
Are you kidding? You create a pillow and the president wants your advice for…a pillow. You are a crack, and now your pillow, and now the president’s adviser. This is crazy.
Rick:
Yeah.
Tim:
And yet how God can use these situations, and what God can work through this. So, cool to see where he was and yet how God redeemed him from that.
Rick:
And I love the fact that he’s using what God did for him to impact the world around him. He’s not, like you said, shying away, he’s not shying away from the political thing. He’s saying, “Hey, here’s the right thing to do.” Both for business, and for the culture, and morality. It’s just cool to see some somebody actually implementing what they believe even after all he’s been through.
So, what a great testimony and what a privilege for us to have him here on the program at WallBuilders Live. I really thank Mike for taking time to be on the program with us. And we want to thank you, the listeners. We wouldn’t get the chance to interview people like Mike, and to bring that information to you, if it wasn’t for our audience.
Mike Lindell’s Story On How God Completely Transformed His Life
Rick:
So, thank you for listening and thank you to all of you out there that contribute to us on a regular basis. That’s what makes it possible. We are a listener supported program, so when you make that contribution it’s allowing WallBuilders Live to add a station, or to do our youth leadership programs, or take legislators and bring them in for legislators training, or take pastors to Washington D.C.. Your contributions go a long way when you make them to WallBuilders Live.
So, thank you for your support of our ministry. Thank you for coming alongside us in what we’re doing. God’s doing amazing things in our nation and it is our duty and responsibility to do all we can to pass the torch of freedom intact to the next generation. And you are helping to make that happen. Thanks for listening to WallBuilders Live.
