Welcome

Rick:

You found your way to the intersection of faith and the culture, welcome to WallBuilders Live! You can find out more about us at our websites WallBuildersLive.com and also WallBuilders.com.

We’re looking at the hottest topics of the day in terms of policy, and faith, and the culture. But all of it from a Biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective. We’re here with David Barton, America’s premier historian and the founder of WallBuilders. Also Tim Barton, national speaker, and pastor, and the president of WallBuilders. And my name is Rick Green.  I’m a former Texas state rep and a national speaker and author.

Again, visit those websites, WallBuildersLive.com and WallBuilders.com.

David, Tim, we’re always talking about youth leadership and actually, we love to highlight great programs out there that are actually getting results. We often talk about Patriot Academy, and High Point, and Summit. Later in the program, we’ve got a guest Gary Newell, he’s going to be talking about Outreach America and other great Youth Leadership Programs out there.

It is so needed. And of course, we get the benefit. We get to see the Joshua and Caleb’s of this next generation. Tim, you work with him at High Point with the in-turn program and at Patriot Academy, we get to see them and actually see that hope coming from the next generation.

Training Up The Next Generation

Tim:

Yeah, there really are a lot of great groups doing some great things. Even in the summer, WallBuilders, we partner with M1 in Dallas and we do leadership training for college students.

There’s such a need for it in this generation and in this culture where, unfortunately, the church has just not done a good job of discipling,  I was going to say, the next generation, we could even argue they haven’t done a good job discipling any generation for the last several decades. But there is a need for leadership.

What’s fun is that young people are so open. This next generation, more so than any generation in the last couple of decades, at least this is what people are indicating. I don’t have a lot of experience from generations past but it’s certainly what you see and what you hear people saying.

This generation is a generation who definitely wants to make a difference in culture. You could argue every generation wants to be significant. Every individual wants to make an impact. They want to accomplish something great in their life.

With this generation, they want to impact the culture around them. They have a heart for people, they want to help people around them, and they want to do something significant.

This is where you have an opportunity when you do some of these leadership trainings, whether it be through Patriot Academy, or High Point Leadership Camp, or Summit, or all these different groups that are doing things, you have young people that are coming and they genuinely want to learn they want to grow.

You have a chance to do something transformative. Which is why you know for us Rick, it’s so fun being able to work in these places where you have kids who want to grow, who want to get better, and just open themselves up and let you pour into them. At the end of the week, or two weeks, or longer with these young people, it’s remarkable the transformation takes place. This is what we know we have to do if we’re going to impact culture around us.

Rick:

And the good thing is we know that it works too, right? We see the results. Whenever these young people get together and sharpen each other’s countenance but have people sowing into them and giving them the skills and the knowledge and challenging them to really be used of Christ in whatever area God has called them to.

We get to not only see them for a week or two in the summer, we actually get to see them over a course of years as they implement those things that they’re taught.

Training Leaders To Train Leaders

David:

In the case of me, Rick. I get to be part of several of these leadership things. Because the M1 and WallBuilders leadership will take up to 50 college kids at a time 18 to 25. Take them for two weeks and it’s very intense and rigorous.

I get to do things with you in Patriot Academy. Get to be with various different leadership training groups. And I’ll tell you, just a matter of a couple of days ago we finished our most recent leadership training for WallBuilders and M1.

The days were long, and they were rigorous, and there are eight to nine hours of actual intense hands on training for two weeks. And you go home tired, but man, I go home jazzed. They are so engaged and ready to get and in, and want to be equipped, and don’t know what to do, but once you show them it’s like if you turn these guys loose like the energizer bunny kind of a feeling.

Preparing Youth For Leadership

They are rigorous. I mean, the kinds of questions they pummel us with during the day, the kinds of discussions, conversations you have, the way that they want to engage, you cannot come out of those days with any kind of pessimism toward the future of America. You come out of those days say, “My gosh, look what’s on the horizon. Look at these guys. They’re going to be killer leaders here in a matter of some years.”

This is so good for the future of America. And it is really refreshing and invigorating to be part of that and see those kids. Yeah, that’s not the whole generation. You know what, it doesn’t take the whole generation. It takes leaders and we’re training leaders and we’re training them with the right worldview, and with history, and with Bible, and with government, and with politics, and all these different things.

For anyone who is discouraged, or depressed, or pessimistic, you just need to show up and sit in the back of the room and watch what happens in these leadership trainings. How these kids respond and how they step up to the challenge. It is just unbelievably positive.

Rick:

Yeah, that’s a great poin, David, for them to go observe some of these things. Most of these programs have some way for you to do that. Actually, go check it out at Patriot Academy, we have a what we call, “Citizen Track” where you can come and participate in that way and actually observe the students on the House floor. Every program has something like that.

But, yes, instead of just sitting back and complaining about the next generation, realize there are some great leaders being raised up. Tim, you nailed that at the beginning when you talked about how they’re cause oriented, they’re passionate, they want to do something that makes a difference.

Gary Newell our mutual friend who speaks at Patriot Academy and we’ve all been involved with him in various aspects also has a great program called Outreach America, where they’re doing the same kind of age range. They’re targeting those college age students and just have some really cool programs.

Outreach America

David:

And by the way Rick, let me throw in. Not only are they training but, you’re talking about the fact that they’re engaged. Ty, Gary Newell’s son’s name is Ty who is around the same age as Tim and he’s right in the middle of one of the two largest anti-sex trafficking organizations in the world.

Ty is in there- we were with him recently and they just rescued 172 girls out of Peru and they just exposed this ring. And he’s 32, 35, whatever, working with world governments bringing change to these girls.

Millennials Who Are Impacting The World

And then after they get done through Gary and Ty what they do is once these girls- Because if you’ve been in the sex trafficking and been a sex slave for a number of years that becomes your life and you get used to it, just like slavery.

So many blacks when they were freed it was hard for them to leave slavery because that’s all they ever known. They’d never known freedom. And so you turned these girls back into real life and all they’ve been as a sex slave and all they know is sex trade. How do you do anything?

Sex Trafficking Rescues

And what they do is they now have these things, “All right, every one of these girls wants to get rescued.” They go through some rehab training, rethinking, and re-programming kind of stuff, and they have to turn in a business plan.

And once they turn in the business plan that business plan gets funded. And they become the owner of a small business, whether it’s a dress shop, or whatever it is, and that gives them a whole new life, and a whole new purpose.

Who’s ever heard of Breaking Chains? That’s not on the national news. But here somebody at the age of a young millennial who is out doing fantastic stuff across the world. And he and his dad have this Outreach America which is also training young people right now to go out and do fantastic things not only in the world but also in America. So there is so much cool stuff that comes from these guys.

Rick:

They are making a great difference. Gary Newell will be with us when we return. Stay with us here, on WallBuilders Live.

A Moment From American History

This is Tim Barton from WallBuilders with another moment from American history. Too often today history education excludes great black heroes from the American founding, such as Lemuel Haynes.

Haynes, though abandoned as a baby, pioneer churches across upper New England. He became the first black American to pastor a white congregation, to receive an honorary master’s degree, and to be ordained by a mainstream Christian denomination, The Congregationalist.

He was a soldier during the American Revolution and in his churches on George Washington’s birthday he regularly preached sermons honoring George Washington. Even late in his life he expressed his willingness to go back to battle if necessary to protect America, which he called, “a sacred ark.”

American history is filled with numerous examples of black heroes who are largely ignored by mainstream education today. For more information about Pastor Lemuel Haynes and other colonial Patriots go to WallBuilders.com.

Developing Leaders To Have A Strong Biblical Mindset

Rick:

Welcome back to WalBuilders Live! Thanks for staying with us today! Our good friend Gary Newell is with us from Outreach America. Gary, love working with you on all the different things from Patriot Academy to you name it. We’ve both got a heart for the youth. I just appreciate you coming on today!

Mr. Newell:

I’m glad to be on, Rick. It’s just an honor to spend some time with you. And you’re right, brother. We’ve had some fun, haven’t we? It’s been all over the country. But anyways, great to hear you. I’ll be with you in a few weeks.

Rick:

Absolutely, and been at Independence Hall together signing the Declaration of Independence and all kinds of cool stuff. But I think you and I converge best on this idea of raising up a new generation of leaders.

You’re doing it without Outreach America, also helping us do it at Patriot Academy, and you’ve been speaking there for years. You’ve kind of taken your success in athletics, and being a professional football player, to business, to now saying to these young people, “Hey, what are you doing with your life that really matters? Are you making a difference?” Because they want that, but they don’t know where to turn for that right now.

Mr. Newell:

You’re right, Rick. And you know obviously we’ve got a leadership gap in America, there’s no question about that. So that’s been our focus, obviously, high school and college and and really leadership mentality. That’s the process, it’s to develop leaders with a strong Biblical worldview that understand what leadership looks like, how to operate in it, and how to keep that as a Biblical model.

Rick:

And that doesn’t happen by accident. Sometimes we think just because you’re raised in America you’re going to be a go getter. Not all.

Mr. Newell:

Not at all.

Rick:

You’ve got to instill that stuff.

Mr. Newell:

In fact, society today is wanting everybody to be the same. If you rise up they show you that you that whole mentality. So we’ve got to break some things and get people understand that it’s ok to win.

Outreach America Is Raising Up Strong Leaders

Rick:

Yeah, no doubt about it. Now, tell us about Outreach America, the vision there, and the types of programs that you guys do. I’ve yet to be able to shoot you with a paintball gun at one of your weekends, I’m looking for that at some point.

Mr. Newell:

You’re right. You know, it’s funny we started this paintball thing years ago and it’s become kind of our trademark. We have done some of the most creative things with paintball I think anybody can do.

But here’s the key, we use it in an arena to develop our leadership retreats, our leadership weekends. I think one of the most effective things are what we do with college students. We take leaders out of the universities, really the ones that are running the campus ministries. We love to have anywhere from 12 to 16 of us.

So the best scenario is we’ll use four different universities, take their leaders from the four different universities. Then we put them together. We compete with some paint ball, we have some fun there, but we use each thing, each scenario is designed to teach a lesson in leadership. That’s something they’re not really getting or understanding. And it makes them learn how to deal with people, make decisions, and think through things at that level.

Then everything we do we want to use a real strong Biblical base model, meaning that we are really word driven. I am big on these guys instilling the Word of God in them, making scripture memory and making time with Scripture is very important priority in their life. We’ve got to make sure that we are equipping young people with God’s Word and the truth of God’s word and so that they can stand on that word. So that’s kind of the base.

Now, the summers are filled with camps. As you know, I’m running like you’re running. We just finished up a lot of hours, it was another another incredible year.

Reaching Out To More Of The World

Rick:

And tell us, the camp is in North Carolina?

Mr. Newell:

Yeah, well, we’re all over.

Rick:

Oh, you do them all over?

Mr. Newell:

Yeah we do. We spend a lot of time coming to the people. More than half of the people come to us.

Rick:

No kidding.

Mr. Newell:

So we can be more geographic. We can load our equipment be there and set it up. So it gives the university, the guys that are running campus ministries, it gives them a little something where they don’t have to travel all across the country.

Pastors or youth ministers or some settings where we can come in and set something up for them and do some things from training at that level. So we’ve been mostly in North Carolina this summer so far. Obviously, I’ll be with you in Texas so we hop across. We were in Kansas as you know, we just kind of move across in those settings. And a lot of the campus stuff is done obviously very close to there.

Rick:

Stay with us Folks, we’re going to take a quick break. We’ll be right back with Gary Newell our special guest today here on WallBuilders Live,

Constitution Alive

Have you ever wanted to learn more about the United States Constitution but just felt like, man, the classes are boring or it’s just that old language from 200 years ago or I don’t know where to start? People want to know. But it gets frustrating because you don’t know where to look for truth about the Constitution either.

Well, we’ve got a special program for you available now called Constitution Alive with David Barton and Rick Green. It’s actually a teaching done on the Constitution at Independence Hall in the very room where the Constitution was framed. We take you both to Philadelphia, the Cradle of Liberty and Independence Hall and to the WallBuilders’ Library where David Barton brings the history to life to teach the original intent of our Founding Fathers.

We call it the QuickStart guide to the Constitution because in just a few hours through these videos you will learn the Citizen’s Guide to America’s Constitution.  You’ll learn what you need to do to help save our Constitutional Republic. It’s fun! It’s entertaining! And it’s going to inspire you to do your part to preserve freedom for future generations. It’s called Constitution Alive with David Barton and Rick Green. You can find out more information on our website now at WallBuilders.com.

The Way To Connect With This Generation

Rick:

Welcome back, thanks for staying with us here on WallBuilders Live! Gary Newell, our special guest today. We’ve been talking about the average American making a difference with the next generation. So Gary, if someone is listening now, let’s say one of these campus leaders, or maybe it’s a pastor, or youth pastor, that’s working with youth and says, “Man, I need some outlets like that. Some hands on leadership training and fun experience where they’re going to get those life lessons.”

How do they get a hold of you and can they just reach out to you and say, “Hey, we want to try to do something locally here. Or bring our team out to your place.” And how do they make that happen?

Mr. Newell:

Absolutely. The best probably, Rick, is for go to OutreachAmerica.org, you’d go there. Or They need to just send an email the best email is Ty. You know Ty, my son.

Rick:

Who’s also helped train at Patriot Academy, a great speaker, and obviously shares the Word of God in a fun way too.

Mr. Newell:

He does. It’s fun to watch the second generation come up. You’re a parent, you’re going through the same process. But just watch our kids now step in, and they do it better than we do it.

Rick:

No doubt, man.

Mr. Newell:

And that’s what’s so fun.

Rick:

Yeah, and definitely watching that with Tim Barton. When David and Tim are back on in a few minutes I’ll pretend I didn’t say that.

Mr. Newell:

There you go. You know how much we love Tim and David. And we love spending time with them. But you’re right, David was down with us. David and I and our two boys and we were both kind of look at each other and and go, “We’re kind of irrelevant, aren’t we?”

Rick:

It’s great to see that torch being passed and then coming alongside. I mean, nothing better than, like you said, seeing them catching the vision. But then even going out there, and execute, and do it better than we did.

Mr. Newell:

I’m telling you. Because they’re so connected to this generation and that’s the key. And I’ll say this. The best way to contact us, if somebody just will email [email protected].  All they need to do is say, “Hey, I listen to your dad on your show and we’re interested in this.” And then we set up, our staff would go, they do a lot of the wilderness stuff. As you know, we do a lot of that, the set up where it’s oriented towards guys and guys, men stuff. I don’t mind saying that. There are a lot of people that don’t do that any more-

Rick:

But we need more of it.

Mr. Newell:

We do. Where guys are being guys.

Rick:

I was following your Twitter page, the rock climbing, and the whole nine yards. It looks fantastic.

Mr. Newell:

That’s the stuff, put them in Adventures. Put them in, create an adventure. Put them in settings like that. But that’s the best thing to do. And the best scenario is to email Ty because.  He will immediately put something back to David and know that, “Okay, here’s what we can do.”

This Next Generation Is Going To Make A Huge Impact

Rick:

Well tell me Gary, what you’re seeing. Tim, David, and I talked about this a lot just in this millennial generation. When that light bulb comes on, when they do get a glimpse of hope and a purpose, how much more passionate and purposeful they are?

In fact, I think you even say this in one of our Patriot Academy videos. They want to know that their life matters, they want to know what they’re doing is going to make a difference. And when you see that light bulb come on and you see that passion suddenly start in them, how much hope does that give you? As you’re watching this generation that, frankly, too many people are writing off and saying, “All millennials are bad.” I don’t believe that at all. Tell me what you see.

Mr. Newell:

I don’t either. In fact, I am jacked about this next generation. Where are we at? Gen Z?

Rick:

Yeah, what’s the next generation?

Mr. Newell:

We are in Gen Z which is from 1996 to 2010. So these are the oldest are in their early 20’s. All right, that generation is a different demographic than we’ve ever seen in this country. And I’m telling you, I’m convinced that that is our generation for you, me, and the other ministries in this arena to reach a great revival in America.

I am absolutely convinced of that. I’ve never seen a generation- number one, these young people do want truth. They’ve had enough of not getting it. Does it make sense?

Rick:

They’re tired of the shifting sand.

Mr. Newell:

When you come and really deliver truth. See, what bothers me is we have the truth, why are so many believers not bold, and not coming out, and saying, “Hey, this is truth.” We don’t have to apologize for anything. We’ve got the power, we’ve got the truth, we need to be the lead, is  what we need to be.

So we’re trying to break those stereotypes and come in and say, “Hey guys, here’s truth.” And when they get it, you’re right, they’re passionate, and they make a difference. And their hope- this generation, you and I grew up in a generation that wanted to do a lot of different things. This generation is really passionate about making a difference in the world. They really want to do that.

Rick:

They just need the tools and they need the coaching in their life. They need people to show them it can be done. As you said, give them the truth so they’ve got something they can be passionate about, and feel good about, and know that it’s going to really matter.

Mr. Newell:

That’s right. And you’ve got to equip them and you’ve got to put them in a setting where they can associate an iron sharpens. Yeah. I don’t care how else you put it, it just always does. So we’re about equipping, we’re about the cycle, we’re about raising up. That’s the whole vision behind what we do and how we do it.

Rick:

I know it’s pricking hearts out there right now even as they’re listening. Parents, some of the young people that listen our program, and certainly some of those campus leaders out there, encourage them- you gave us the e-mail, it’s [email protected]

Folks, I encourage you go there, find out what you can do to create one of these programs, you need that hands on training. Gary, can’t wait see you at Patriot Academy, brother. I just appreciate all that you’re doing.

Mr. Newell:

I can’t wait, we’re going to have a lot of fun!

Rick:

Thanks for coming on! Appreciate your time of the day.

Mr. Newell:

You’ve got it, take care!

Rick:

Stay with us folks, we’ll be right back with David and Tim Barton.

If You Rise Up You’ll Get Shot At

Rick:

Welcome back, thanks for staying with us here on WallBuilders Live. We’re back now with David and Tim Barton. Thanks to Gary Newell for joining us today. Be sure and check out Outreach America and see how you can get folks on college campuses near you involved in that as well.

So David, Tim, just another great example, and we talked earlier about how we get to see the results of these things. This is literally thinking long term and saying, “Hey, it’s not enough to fight the battles of the day. We’ve also got to fight for the next generation so that we’re winning battles 10 to 20 years from now.

David:

A couple of things Gary said I found real significant, because they go to why we don’t see more of this kind of training in some way and why we don’t see more leadership stepping up.

Gary made the comment, “If you rise up they’ll shoot at you.” And that’s true. I don’t know of anyone who likes getting shot at. Even the guys who love being deployed and love the military, they don’t like getting shot at.

They’ll respond right when it happens. But I was reminded of the Bible verse in 2 Timothy 3:12 where it says, “Everyone who wants to live a Godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” You know what, in America we’ve been immune to that for so many years, now that it is starting to happen we feel like we’re weird somehow.

Jesus Said We Would Be Persecuted

No, this is what Jesus told us would happen. If you start to make a difference, if you rise up, they will shoot at you. And if you’re not having people shoot at you, you’re not rising up. So part of the solution for this is we’re going to have people say, “I hate being shot at but I don’t mind getting shot at if I need to. That just means I got my head above ground where I can make some significant difference.” That’s a big thing.

No one Likes Getting Shot At

Tim:

And I’ll point out, too, it’s significant in this day and age in culture that we recognize the difference between being shot at and being attacked for values.

David:

Yeah.

Tim:

You know one of the things that I think it was Peter who talked about writing in the Bible that if you’re persecuted for doing good then rejoice. But if you’re persecuted because you did something wrong, then that’s your bad. And I think a lot of times as Christians it’s easy to come across in a bad manner where we can be jerks and we’re confrontational and we’re not loving and then people don’t like us and we say we are always being persecuted for Jesus.

No it’s because you’re a jerk. It’s not because you love Jesus.  It’s because you’re not a nice person but when you take a stand for values and you say,  “Look you know I love you. But but marriage is one man and one woman.”

“Oh you are bigoted; you are hateful.”

When you stand for a value and you do it in love and then you are attacked. You can know.  You know what? This is what Jesus talked about. He said that a servant is not greater than his master. They persecuted him they’re going to persecute us too. And you’re right.

If if there is not some area in our life where we receive flack then you have to question. Am I really standing for Godly values? Because in this culture it’s pretty easy to get recognized standing for Godly values. Real Quick.

David:

That’s Right.

Have Backbone To Make A Change

Tim:

But for sure if we stand up for Godly values and principles then we can’t be surprised when we’re shot at because that’s what this culture is doing right now.

David:

And it takes backbone to make changes. I mean if you want to see the culture go in a different direction you have to have some backbone.  Someone has got to stand up and change it. We saw that in the American Revolution we had Patriots who had backbones and said I don’t care what pressure Great Britain throws at us. I’m not backing down I’m standing for the right things. They lead in a different direction and by the way, a lot of those guys who did that, Founding Fathers,  were quite young at the time.  They would be the Millennials of their day.

And so training young people to have backbone to have the apologetics to know you’re going to get shot at by your peers, by your professors, by others. But that’s OK.  You stand, you’ll be the winner at the end of this thing, because these are the values that always win.

And that’s the kind of leadership training that started to happen across the nation whether it be what we do at WallBuilders with our leadership training program or Rick, what you do with Patriot Academy or what they do with High Point in Hot Springs or whether it’s what Jeff Meyers does or what Gary Newell does with Outreach America. I mean these are all training programs that will make a difference in America.  But we can all train someone we can all be a mentor to someone else just have some backbone and stand up and teach the right things so that we can see a turnaround.

Rick:

Well, it’s great news to see that it is happening.  We need even more people involved as well.

Rick:

We’ll have lots of links for you today at WallBuildersLive.come these various organizations and ways that you can get involved as well. Thanks so much for listening. You’ve been listening to WallBuildersLive.
