Faith and the Culture
You found your way to the intersection of faith and the culture. This is WallBuilders Live. We sure appreciate you joining us today. You can learn more about us at our website wallbuilderslive.com.
My name is Rick Green. I’m a former Texas legislator and America’s Constitution coach. And normally, I’m right here with David Barton, America’s premier historian and our founder at WallBuilders; usually Tim Barton’s, with US National speaker and pastor and president of WallBuilders. But today is a little different, kind of like most of this week, we’re bringing you some special programming from Patriot Academy’s speakers this summer.
We had our virtual academies, and so we were able to have some phenomenal speakers like Dennis Prager yesterday. If you were listening on this program yesterday, you heard Dennis Prager of Prager University and the Fireside Chats and his radio program, ‘The Rational Bible’, phenomenal speaker, and we had a great time with him. So if you missed that, visit, our website wallbuilderslive.com, you can get that right there in the archive section.
We’ve also had Ben Shapiro, Michael Knowles, Andrew Klavan, Allie Stuckey. Dinesh D’souza will be with us next Monday. I mean, phenomenal, phenomenal speakers. Really important folks, and important voices in the culture war of today, and you know, WallBuilders is all about that. We are the intersection of faith and the culture. We look at things from a biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective.
And so any issue of the day, no matter what it is, if you will take that biblical, historical and constitutional perspective, you’ll find the right position on that issue, and you’ll also be motivated to do your part as a citizen. You cannot help but look at the issues of the day from a biblical, historical and constitutional perspective, and actually be encouraged and realize we have the answers for the culture today.
Our Instruction Manuel
We have the instruction manual, God’s word gives us exactly what our position should be on these issues. And when we look at history, we see where it’s been applied, and gotten good results. We see where it’s been ignored, and cultures have fallen apart.
And then of course, that constitutional perspective, we look at how our particular system in America works, and how blessed we are to be the citizens that are in charge. Think about that. We, the people, we are Caesar in America. So when we’re told to render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and unto God, what is God’s, with that comes a great responsibility to influence the culture positively, to influence the culture with the good news.
I think sometimes we forget the Great Commission, was to make disciples. It’s not just to preach the message of salvation, it’s to make disciples. It’s to actually teach them to obey all His commands. And that includes how we live out our freedom, how we live out our citizenship, how we influence our government when we have the right and the power to do so. It’s the parable of the talents.
We’ve been given this great talent of freedom. Let’s not bury it. Let’s not be the wicked and slothful servant that did not participate. Let’s be like the other two that invested, that grew that talent. Well, we have the talent of freedom in America, let’s be a part of it.
You can learn more about us at wallbuilderslive.com. You can listen to the archives of these great guests that we’ve had on our Foundations of Freedom Thursday programs, where we are typically taking your questions and addressing those major questions of the day and how to address these things from that biblical, historical and constitutional perspective. This is actually a Thursday so we’re obviously not doing a Foundations of Freedom Thursday on this particular Thursday, instead, we have special guests for you today, Jeremy Boreing.
Welcome Jeremy Boreing
Now listen, this is I think one of the most important voices in America. Jeremy has been a great friend to Patriot Academy and WallBuilders for years. He’s been speaking at our Patriot Academy at the Austin, Texas capitol for years coming in person to do that. This year with COVID crackdowns, we had our national Patriot Academy as a virtual academy and he came in and shared virtually with us this year.
But Jeremy is, is somewhat sarcastically known as the “god king” of the Daily Wire, and that’s because he’s the one that helped make that happen and bring that together and bring together great minds and voices of today, from Ben Shapiro to Michael Knowles, to Andrew Klavan to Matt Walsh.
What they’re doing at the Daily Wire, I think, is essential. They are one of the most important outlets in the country right now. Certainly, they do the best in terms of bringing you the news of the day, and then their podcast with these incredible minds, sharp individuals and entertaining I might say. I really enjoy listening to all of those guys.
At any way, Jeremy has just been a great friend of Patriot Academy and we appreciate him very much. When we come back from the break, we’re going to be diving into his time at Patriot Academy this summer and sharing that with you today. It’s going to take two programs to do this. So make sure you tune in tomorrow for the conclusion.
Today, we’ll get the first half of Jeremy Boreing at Patriot Academy and tomorrow, we’ll get the second half. And again, if you missed Dennis Prager yesterday and the day before, that’s available at wallbuilderslive.com right now.
Quick break, we’ll be right back with Jeremy Boreing at Patriot Academy. You’re listening to WallBuilders Live.
Moment From American History
This is Tim Barton from WallBuilders with another moment from American history. After the final victory at Yorktown, the Continental Army awaited the outcome of peace negotiations with the Great Britain. Pastor Israel Evans, a chaplain in the army proposed to George Washington that they build a structure where church services can be held during the months of waiting. Washington approved the plan, and urges officers to ensure that the soldiers attended service.
Pastor Evans further knew, if we were to secure the liberties they had fought for, sound education would be crucial. He declared, “Every parent and every friend of the freedom of his country ought to be attentive to the improvement of our youth in the principles of freedom and good government, and then the people will stand fast in their liberty for a long time.” Our schools today need to return to teaching the principles of freedom and good government in order for America to survive and prosper.
For more information about pastor Israel Evans and other colonial patriots, go to wallbuilders.com.
Welcome back WallBuilders live. Thanks for staying with us today. As I mentioned before the break, we got a special program lined up for you. We’re actually going to take you to Patriot Academy and give you the chance to hear from Jeremy Boreing as he speaks to the students there.
Now remember, Patriot Academy is 16 to 25 year olds from all across the nation that is our national Patriot Academy that happens in Texas normally at the state capitol. We also have a military Patriot Academy that normally happens over on the Senate floor while the students are on the House floor, but we didn’t get a chance to have that this year because of the COVID crackdowns.
The Citizen Track
And then we also have a citizen track, it’s a constitution coach conference. So be thinking ahead to next summer, Lord willing, we will be back in the Texas capitol, and you can join us to be a part of that, all of that available at patriotacademy.com. Let’s jump into Jeremy Boreing at Patriot Academy.
And, I forgot to hit record on the very beginning of our time with Jeremy, so I apologize for you listeners, you’ll miss just the first, I don’t know, it was 30 or 45 seconds, and so we’re going to jump into his thought. We were talking about the elections and what’s coming up and the efforts at voter fraud and some of those things.
So we’re kind of jumping into the middle of a thought, but trust me, it’ll be worth it the rest of the presentation, fantastic. Here’s Jeremy Boreing at Patriot Academy.
I can assure you right now that if we were to find out in mid-November, that we still haven’t been able to count all the new mail in ballots that are going to be happening during this presidential election, really, for the first time in the kind of mass we’re going to see them. By the way, if you don’t know, the state of New York still hasn’t counted all of the mail-in ballots from their mid-June special primary election.
So we could be in the middle of November still not know who won the presidential election, have it turned out that we just find suitcases full of forged ballots. It goes to the Supreme Court, I assure you, John Roberts will vote on behalf of Joe Biden assuming the presidency, it doesn’t actually matter what the facts are, he 100% will side with putting Biden in the presidency because he’ll see it as a way of writing the 2020 debacle, not writing it because it was decided incorrectly, but writing it because he wants to bring balance to the perception of the court in the public.
No Longer the Dominant Culture
So we live in a post-constitutional country; we live in a post-Bill of Rights country; we live in a post-originalist Supreme Court country. We live in a country where we are no longer the dominant culture. That’s the bad news.
The good news is we’re now the counterculture, and this is truly good news. And here’s why. When you’re in the dominant culture, you can be lazy, and when you’re lazy, you lose over time. When you’re in the counterculture, you can’t afford to be lazy.
We have to stop seeing ourselves as conserving a way of life that no longer exists. And listen, many of you grew up in religious households, many of you grew up in rural settings, many of you were homeschooled, many of you have exceptional families, and I say exceptional in the literal sense. They are today the exception.
The nuclear family is becoming the exception. The Left has had open war with the idea of the nuclear family. Black Lives Matters, the organization openly calls for the end of the nuclear family.
So many of you have exceptional families, and because you’re very young, your exposure to the world is very limited. That’s not a knock on you. That’s just something that happens, with time, you get more exposure to the world around you.
If you have good parents, you are exposed to the world around you, but you’re also shielded a little bit from the world around you as you grow up. And I suspect that that’s the case, or not all, but for perhaps most of the people who find themselves at Patriot Academy.
And so from where you sit, it may still seem like those values are very real and very alive and can be conserved. But when you come into more and more contact with the culture around you, you’ll find they were on the retreat 50 years ago, and they have been defeated today. But in the counterculture, you can’t afford complacency, you can’t afford the hubris of thinking that you win as long as you don’t lose.
We all love an underdog story, we all like movies about the underdog who rises up and wins from Frodo in the ring to Rudy and the Notre Dame football team. America loves an underdog story. The counterculture isn’t fundamentally an underdog story. You’re going to have to play harder than everyone else. You’re going to have to play smarter than everyone else. You’re going to have to play better than everyone else.
And the truth is our parents and our grandparents, that generation, particularly the boomer generation, they failed us. Their idea didn’t work. The idea of the sort of Moral Majority conservative Christian 1980s approach to our national politics failed, and it failed because it deserved to fail. It failed because it was based on fear. It failed because it sought not to actually win in the cultural battle space, it sought to isolate itself from the cultural battle space.
The idea of things like Christian Rock, which was a big thing that happened in the 80s and 90s, Christian rock is a loser idea. It’s an idea for losers, people who lose; people who cannot win. It’s the idea that they have, the culture has rock music. And we actually kind of liked the way it sounds, but we’re afraid of it.
So rather than engage with the culture and try to bring our values to bear in that culture, we’re going to take the things that we like, totally isolate ourselves from the culture, and people will quote the Bible command to be in the world but not of the world as some sort of justification for our failure. But anybody trying to justify failure, it’s a failure, right? That’s by definition, that’s what you are when you attempt to justify your failure.
Have you noticed the vacuum of leadership in America? We’re looking around for leaders of principle to step up and too often, no one is there. God is raising up a generation of young leaders with a passion for impacting the world around them. They’re crying out for the mentorship and leadership training they need. Patriot Academy was created to meet that need.
Patriot Academy graduates now serve in state capitals around America, in the halls of Congress and business, in the film industry, in the pulpit and every area of the culture. They’re leading effectively and impacting the world around them. Patriot Academy is now expanding across the nation and now’s your chance to experience this life changing week that trains champions to change the world. Visit patriot academy.com for dates and locations.
Our core program is still for young leaders 16 to 25 years old, but we also now have a citizen track for adult, so visit the website today to learn more. Help us fill the void of leadership in America. Join us in training champions to change the world at patriotacademy.com
What you’ll find is in life, the way to be successful as an individual, and ultimately the way that we can be successful as a movement is never to justify any failure, not a personal failure, not a failure of character, and not a failure in your business, not a failure in your sport, and not a failure in our national politics. You have to take a hard look at yourself. You have to take always every day be introspective, always every day, be trying to figure out what you can do better.
Take on Responsibility
Guys, this is going to be probably the best advice you get from me for the day, so I’m going to linger here for a moment, because it applies to so much more than our politics, but it applies so much to our politics. Seek out responsibility as much responsibility as you can find as quickly as you can find it. Because responsibility, a lot of people have the idea of well, I can’t get married until I can afford it. Or oh, we can’t have a kid until we can afford a house. That’s actually not how the world works most of the time.
The way the world works is you take on the responsibility, and then because of the responsibility itself, you create the solution. So if you wait to have a kid until you can afford to have a kid, you may never have one because no one can afford one. If you have a kid, you will figure out how to afford it. You will improve and better yourself because of that responsibility, and you’ll rise to the occasion. Put yourself in a position to always rise to the occasion.
If you want to know how to be a good husband, how to be a good wife, how to be a good parent, how to be a good employee, how to be a good employer, how to be good in politics, take on responsibility, and always in every moment of conflict or loss, ask yourself what you could have done better, not what someone else could have done better. You have no control over what anyone else does. You only have control over what you do.
And so ultimately, your responsibility in any situation is for what you bring to bear. You’ll hear this with married couples all the time. They’ll get into a large fight and you’ll ask them, you know what happened? Isolate them, ask each one of them what happened. Each one will tell you what the other person did wrong. Very rarely will either of them tell you what they did wrong.
But of course, if all of your problems are only because of the other guy, then what can you do about it? Then you’re a victim of circumstance, and that’s not a Christian view, that’s not a conservative view, and it’s not a successful view, to see yourself as a victim of circumstance. You have power to shape the world around you, not to control it, but to shape the world around you only to the extent that you have the ability to make changes to yourself.
We Must Behave Better
So for us to all sit here and talk about oh, the Left did that, the Left did this, you know, Ronald Reagan should have done that, and then Bill Clinton shouldn’t have done this, and Barack Obama shouldn’t have done that, and George Bush should have done this, a lot of people out there we can blame instead of taking that good, hard look at ourselves. And the unfortunate truth is, those of us who have the values on which the country was founded now find ourselves in a minority, because of what we did, not because of what they did.
The Left is supposed to behave like the left. The world is supposed to behave like the world. We’re supposed to behave better. We have winning ideas, and we’re supposed to be winners in the application of those ideas, not to isolate ourselves from the things that we fear, but to fear not, to go boldly, not to tread lightly into the battle space.
You know, the great heroes of the Bible didn’t isolate themselves on ranches in eastern Tennessee, and homeschool their kids and only expose them to the things that they wanted to expose themselves to expose them to, and hold them really tight, and pretend that it was all going to work out once they came into contact with reality. No, they were people who were in the world, they were active in the world.
Abraham was moving through the world, engaging in the Battle of his time; David was engaging in the world, engaging in the battle of his time, and we must do the same. We have to get rid of this 80s Moral Majority nonsense of hiding with our heads in the sand and then looking up every four years in sort of disbelief that the country is changing.
We Must Engage
Why isn’t it the way that we want it to be? But why would it be the way that we want it to be if we’re not engaging in it? If we don’t do it, if we don’t make the world what we want it to be, who will? The guys who don’t agree with us, of course, they won’t.
So I see all of this as a great opportunity, and it’s a greater opportunity for you than it is for me because I got a bunch of white hair and my beard now and you don’t. It’s your world, and you get to help shape it into what it’s going to be.
And you have the great luxury, which I didn’t have of if you take a good look around you, you will see that we all lost, and therefore that you have the real opportunity now to do something that the generations before you haven’t had the opportunity to do. And that’s to act as insurgents. That’s to act as rebels. That’s to actually live out a sort of Star Wars ethos; to live out the underdog ethos. And the tools available to the underdog are amazing. In fact, I’ll give you a great example of how successfully they can be used.
The Left, the Left in the 1960s began to perceive themselves as the counterculture. And because of that attitude, and because of the tools of the counterculture, they now look up 50 years later, and they are the dominant culture. This will make your parents or grandparents happy, they want easy answers and fast answers to the problems that are happening in the country, and they don’t want to acknowledge how they failed to preserve the country for you.
But they did, they failed to preserve the country for you. And the answers are not easy, and the solution will not happen quickly. Republicans have always been good at winning elections while losing the country, and now we’re going to get worse and worse probably even at winning elections. But elections aren’t going to save the culture.
Become a Constitution Coach!
Many of you out there are under stay-at-home orders by your governor or your local health officials and maybe you’re looking for something to do during this time. One of the most important things you can do as a citizen is to make sure that you know your rights, you know when they’ve been violated and you’re the better prepared to defend and assert them. To do that, you’ve got to study the Constitution and the history behind it.
Constitution Alive with David Barton and Rick Green does exactly that. We take you into the WallBuilders library, we bring all those resources to life. And then we go out to Philadelphia, the Independence Hall and right there in the room where the Constitution and the Declaration were put together, we bring it to life, we relive it and we make sure that we as citizens know what our part is in preserving these freedoms for future generations.
At this time in our nation, it is so important to know the proper role of government and what we as citizens should be doing at this time. If you haven’t done Constitution Alive, check it out at wallbuilders.com. You can get the DVD set there, we’ll get it out in the mail to you as soon as we can.
And you can study it at home or you can go to constitutioncoach.com and become a Constitution coach today. We’ve got a free license for you right now where you can sign up as a Constitution host and be the catalyst in your community to bring back these biblical and historical and constitutional values.
And what you do is you sign up as a host and then you get your friends and family together on Zoom. We coach you on how to do it and you’re able to create community and also study the Constitution at the same time. Do this and we will be able to pick up the pieces on the other side of this crisis and rebuild our nation even stronger than it was before. Check it out today at constitutioncoach.com.
Elections Don’t Save the Country
The culture saves the country, elections don’t save the country. The culture presents the Overton window in which politicians must operate. The great example of that, of course, in 2008, Barack Obama could not be elected as a Democrat if he did not oppose same sex marriage.
Four short years later, Barack Obama could not be elected as a Democrat unless he supported same sex marriage. So what happened? Did the Barack Obama change? No, Barack Obama didn’t change, the rules of the game changed and those rules were created by the culture by the people who are unafraid to engage in the culture and people who…
Listen, as believers, we’re supposed to take a very long view. You know, our home is in eternity, our home isn’t in this world. And yet, when it comes to politics, when it comes to the culture, we get very fearful, and we want cheap, easy victories. And any idea that sounds like it will work tomorrow, we jump behind. And any idea that requires planting, intending and not harvesting for a long time, we’re afraid of.
But those are exactly the kinds of solutions that are going to be required. It will be 50 years, at best, best case scenario, it will be 50 years before there is that majority again in the country of people who see the world the way that we want the world to be seen. That means you’ve got your work cut out for you, and you need to start thinking about the game as a very long game indeed. The Left did it very successfully. If they can do it successfully, I guarantee you, we can do it successfully.
And this brings me to my theological thought for you for the day. That is that God demands from his people, optimism. He does not promise us tomorrow. He does not promise us a good result in this world. In fact, he assures us that in this world, we will have our problems, but he has overcome the world.
The answer to our problems in this world isn’t that we’ll get all the things that we want. The answer to us having problems in this world is that he has had victory over the world. Because of that, we can have a kind of liberation from being overly concerned with how dire circumstances seem.
And for that reason, God calls us to an optimism, that’s an optimism of faith, that’s an optimism that’s almost disconnected from the realities of our circumstance. And this is so baked into the fabric of the Bible. You find it on like page three, God says “Be fruitful and multiply”. He says it before sin even enters the world, “Be fruitful and multiply”, which is a fundamentally optimistic command.
Most of the reasons that people are afraid to have children in our time are because of pessimism, is because of insecurities because of fear. God doesn’t call us to have those fears. From the very beginning, He wants you to see the future as a potentially good place and to be operating as though it will be a good place. Otherwise, no one would be fruitful, no one would multiply, no one would have children if you don’t have optimism about the future.
Where to Focus
He also commands as people all through the Old Testament, lift up now thine eyes. He wants you to look up from your circumstances, looking at the very optimistic gesture to something above how difficult our circumstances are to Him. He wants us not to be focused on the problems we will have in this world, but on the victory that he has had in Christ. And so God, isn’t afraid of the future, right?
For God, the future is already right now, there isn’t time. He’s not afraid of what might be, He already is with whatever might be. He knows the future, not because he’s clairvoyant, he knows the future because he’s in the future. Because for him, all time, as CS Lewis points out, all time is now for the eternal God.
So God doesn’t have fear of the future, and he doesn’t want you to live as though you have fear of the future. People who, if you’re afraid to engage with the world, if you’re afraid to stick your head up, if you want to bury your head in the sand and close ranks and circle the wagons, and we just have this little remnant of people, and we…
Listen, I understand that impulse, but impulse lost us the country. And the funny thing is, if we don’t get the country back, you won’t even have the right to live that life that the 80s Moral Majority wanted us all to live.
And so what do we do? We look ahead. We don’t get too worried about where we are. We start thinking about playing the long game. We have optimism for the future. Not because we’re guaranteed that the future is something to be all that optimistic about, but because we know that a spirit of optimism is connected to a spirit of faith, and it’s an in faith that we’re saved, right?
We’re saved because we have hope, as Paul says, and the things that we don’t know for sure, the things that are unseen, as the author of Hebrews says, we have faith, the substance of things hoped for, the things not seen. Our hope isn’t in this world, but because our hope is in something that isn’t in our circumstances, we can be optimistic about our circumstances. Because really, what can they take from us? What can they do to us? Nothing.
Patriot Academy Interview With Jeremy Boreing – Part One
So why should we fear? Why should we lead these lives of fear we shouldn’t? Get out there, do some hard work, plant long seeds, know that you’re not going to get easy wins, easy victories, take on as much responsibility as you can, hold yourself to account.
Always look in when something doesn’t go well. Always look in when something does go well and figure out how it could go even better. Focus on fixing the things that you can fix, and let’s have a fun counterculture.
Alright, friends, we are out of time for today we’re going to jump back in with Jeremy Boreing tomorrow. We’ll get the second half of his presentation to the Patriot Academy students including their questions. So don’t want to miss that, it’ll all be available at our website wallbuilderslive.com.
