Faith and the Culture

Rick:

This is the intersection of faith and the culture. It’s WallBuilders Live, where we talk about the hottest topics of the day on policy, faith, and the culture, all of it from a biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective.

Well, it’s the first day of the year. Normally, on Friday, it would be Good News Friday, but this time, we’re actually finishing out a program that we started day before yesterday. So Wednesday, and Thursday, and now today, Friday, three part series, Charlie Duke, one of the few people to walk on the moon, phenomenal testimony, and a great presentation that he gave at the ProFamily Legislators Conference a few weeks back, and we wanted to bring that to you here, our WallBuilders listeners.

So normally, we’d be here with David Barton, America’s premier historian, and our founder of WallBuilders, and Tim Barton, national speaker and pastor and president of WallBuilders. And myself, Rick Green, I’m a former Texas legislator and America’s Constitution coach. Normally, the three of us would be talking about these issues, the hot topics of the day from that biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective.

Charlie:

I went into the Air Force Reserve so that I could have enough time to retire when I got to 20. This was like 18.5 years service for me. And so I made a lot of money, but I didn’t have any peace. After about a year and a half, Dorothy saw this and things were really getting nice at home, she was really a sweet, sweet wife. 

Praying About the Beer Business

And so she said, why don’t you pray and ask God if He wants you in a beer business? And so I said, you know, I was a prayer book prayer, all these printed prayers, but nothing wrong with that. Oh, by the way, there’s some powerful prayers in a prayer book in now the Anglican Church where we go.

And so well, I said, why don’t you pray? And her prayer was very simple. “Lord, if you want Charlie to beer business, give him peace; if you don’t want him into beer business, make it so miserable, that he sells out.” A big one liner. And so over the next six months, it got more and more miserable, but the money got better and better and better. What do I do?

Finally, I gave up I said, I’m selling out. This was in March of 78. And in the next month, a doctor friend of ours in New Braunfels, Texas where we live said let’s go to a Bible study. And I went to this Bible study at T Bar M Conference Center, Tennis Ranch. And it was Friday night, all day, Saturday, and Sunday. And the thought occurred to me, how do you study the Bible all week long? But he was so nice, and he enticed us to go as a couple. So it was probably 20 couples there.

And when I sat down, it was the study of Jesus from Genesis to revelations, as God exposed His Son, and His plan of redemption through the Scriptures. And there was a lot of scriptures, but I’m on just two of them. And we all know these two, was actually in the book of John. And it was “For God so loved the world that he gave his only son that if you believe in him, you’ll not perish but have everlasting life.” And the thought occurred to me, is that true or is that a lie? And I get to the side. You do too.

Moment from American History

This is Tim Barton from WallBuilders with another moment from American history. Many today assert that religion is something private, that it has no place in the public square, and that it is incompatible. But government for the Founding Fathers believed exactly the opposite. They held that religion was absolutely necessary in order to maintain our free system of government.

For example, John Adams declared, “We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion.” And signer of the Declaration, Benjamin Rush, similarly affirmed “Without religion, there can be no virtue and without virtue, there can be no liberty; and liberty is the object and life of all republican governments.”

Charlie:

Is Jesus the Son of God, or he’s a big liar? Make up your mind. Today’s decision time. Jesus says, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to God except through me. That’s either true, or the biggest lie ever perpetrated on humanity. And we get to decide, because God’s given us freewill.

To Walk With God or Walk Away?

You can choose to believe and walk with God forever, or you can choose to walk away. It grieves God when we walk away, he still loves us. But we have a free will. I didn’t even know CS Lewis’s name back in those days. But that’s his argument and mere Christianity. It’s either true or it isn’t. Jesus is not just a good guy. He’s either God or a liar. Make up your mind.

And so sitting in my automobile, and the whole weekend, God was just convicting me. Make up your mind! Make up your mind! You’re playing church. And so in my automobile at Sunday afternoon, I looked over at Dorothy and I said, darling, there is no doubt in my mind that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. I said, Lord, I give you my life.

No sinner’s prayer. Nothing like that. Just says, Lord, I give you my life. And I experienced the peace of God that I’ve been searching for all my life in the front seat of my automobile. Hallelujah!

I sold this business, made a lot of money, so I didn’t have any job. So I started reading the Bible. And the more I read the Bible, the more convicted I became. You know, Scripture says, some sins go before us and some sins follow after us. I didn’t feel like a sinner. I didn’t murder anybody. I didn’t really steal anything much, maybe bag of pencils from the government every once in a while, you know, but everybody does that.

But God began to convict me from his word. This is the truth, the Word of God. And as we see the truth, do we react to the truth or to reject the truth? And God spoke to my heart, and says in Ephesians, husbands love your wives as Christ loved the church. God spoke to my heart said, you don’t love your wife that way. Repent. And I repented and asked God, forgive me. He did. He is faithful and just and forgive us of our sins if we just ask him and admit them.

Building a Marriage on the Rock

Dorothy had already forgiven me and so we begin to build our marriage on the solid foundation of Jesus, the Rock. And the closer we get to Jesus, the closer we get to one another. We’ve had a lot of problems. This is 1978 now, so it’s 42 years ago. And let me tell you, our lives had not been a bed of roses.

It’s not been Lottie die. It’s been a tough road in many respects, but not one promise of God has failed us. We get in arguments, and we don’t let the sun go down on our argument. We solve the problem and solve what’s dividing us before we go to sleep. It’s amazing as you humbled yourself, and ask for forgiveness and seek His face, God’s peace comes and it comes.

I remember one time, we would drive into Corpus Christi through San Antonio down to 37. And we’re going to this marriage seminar to tell everybody how wonderful our marriage is. And we’re in a knockdown, drag out fight, 70 miles an hour down the interstate. And the argument was over theology. And I’m right. I’ve never heard the voice of God, but at this moment, the closest I’ve ever heard with the voice of God was shut up! And apologize. And I pulled off to the side and we had a forgiveness session.

Finding Truth

Let’s pick up where we left off before the break. Here’s Charlie Duke at the ProFamily Legislators Conference.

Charlie:

God healed and brought us together. At that point, we realized we got an enemy, and he doesn’t want us in peace, loving our spouses. He wants contention and fight. Our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the powers and principalities of this dark world that wants to divide us. And so the scripture in Ephesians, put on the full armor of God and take our stand. We stand.

I get over to Proverbs in my reading, and my first thought was, “How did this get in the Bible?” All these little one liners, you know. But the one liners are piercing. And one of them was, I don’t know where it is, I love the God that says somewhere it is written. Well, somewhere in Proverbs that says, you have the power of life and death in your tongue. That’s a powerful statement.

And God spoke to my heart says you have cursed your own children. Lord, I love these guys. You have cursed your own children, not with profanity, that’s not what Bible is talking about. Tom, you are stupid. I’ve put a curse on my son with that statement. Watch what you say. You can speak curses, or you can speak life.

And I love these kids. When a God showed me, I was in tears. And I went to them and I said, boys, forgive me. I was a military drill instructor dad. I was pounding them into perfection like I was, or so I thought. And so I was hard on them, always on them.

And God says, you love you, boys, you bless your boys. And when we started doing that, the peace came in our family and the peace came into their lives and they started blossoming like spring flowers. I think, they were 11 and 13 at the time.

Living Under God

And I mean, it was a change. It took them a year, but they came to the Lord. And we’d raised them in the church, they said, we want to know Jesus like you all know Jesus.

And so we led our family to the Lord and we walk in today as a family. They’ve given us nine grandchildren. And we are blessing the socks of our grandchildren. They don’t live like we want them to sometimes, but the outcome is up to them. We just pray for them, Lord, lead them in the right direction, lead them in the right direction. So we take our stand. Put on a full armor of God, and stand for truth.

I am under God. Sometimes I don’t obey instantly, but God is faithful, He doesn’t leave us. We are never alone, as you said last night, Pastor. We’re never alone. We can make our stand for truth, and we walk in love. Those people out there that are rioting are not our enemy.

It’s the spiritual forces of evil that are pushing them behind, that’s our enemy, the enemy of America, the prince of the power of the air that’s over our country. And we as Christians need to unite in spiritual warfare. We have the full armor of God. We have the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, He that is in us is greater than he is in the world.

The American Story

Charlie:

We live for Jesus. Our citizenship is in the United States, but it’s in the heavenly city also. And that’s where we focus on. We pray for our land. We pray for our nation. We are the hope, I believe, of this great republic. So we need to take our stand and be really under God. As a great general in the Bible, he’s not called a general, with a statement, I’ll conclude.

Taking a Stand in Love

His name is Joshua. And he challenged Israelites as they were going into the Promised Land, choose this day whom you shall serve. As for me and from my house, we’re going to serve the Lord.

In spite of what the government says, I served the government, I’m a private citizen now, but I respect our government when it stands for truth. But when it stands against what God is, I’m going to be against it. I voted my values at this election, and not on a person. What do they stand for? And so I made my vote on the values of the two flat forms.

And so, but I love my enemy. We have relatives that are on the other side and we love them. We want to be good relatives, if you put it that way. We want to have a family that is in love.

And we can disagree, but love one another. So our love is a weapon that our enemies don’t have. And so we need to stand. As Joshua says, “For me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” So I stand here today, taking my stand, I’m going to serve the Lord, whatever comes. God bless you. Thank you very much.

We Must Know the Founding Principles

It’s really important for all of us to know the Constitution, to know what our state laws are, to follow those state legislative sessions, to testify, to let our state reps and senators know where we stand on the issues. That’s important for all of us to do. If we’re going to have a true constitutional republic, where we the people are ultimately in charge, then we the people have to be informed.

And we have to learn about these principles that produce liberty. And we have to learn about good laws that will allow us to enjoy our religious liberty and our parental rights. I mean, all of these things that we say we’re for, we’ve got to know how those things work.

And so it’s not just for the legislators that we do these conferences. They’re the ones that come together and are there in-person. But then we like to bring the presentations to you our listeners at WallBuilders Live! because all of us can learn something from it. So we do encourage you, not only to listen to these programs, but to share them with your friends and family. Use that social media, email, Facebook, if you’re still on there, Twitter, of course, we’re hoping to move in the Parler and MeWe and these other outlets out there like Rumble.

But wherever you are on social media, please take our programs and share them with your friends and family. It’s how we get the truth out there. I think that’s probably the most important thing we could do this year as we move into 2021. We’ve got to have the courage to speak truth. We got to seek truth, we got to find that truth, but then we got to fight for that truth. We got to make sure that they were sharing it with our friends and family, that we’re standing up for, not allowing the canceled culture to keep us from speaking that truth.

We must Stand Strong

Sometimes we’re in fear. You know, I mean, you stand up for truth right now, and believe me, people are going to take shots at you. And so it’s important to have the courage to do so, otherwise, we’re going to lose the ability to speak up at all and we’re going to lose these principles that we hold dear. So I challenge you to be a part of the solution. There’s a lot of ways that you can do that.

As we move into this year, you know, one of the most important things you can do, as I’ve said already, is just get educated yourself, be a good citizen, understand where these freedoms come from and how they’re preserved. And we give you a lot of options on how to do that. Pro-Family Legislators Conference With Charlie Duke, Part 3 – Finding True Life

We have a free license there that gives you the ability to share the videos, to get people educated in your circle of friends and family. First, for you to get educated, but them as well. And you don’t have to go through the course before you host a course. You can become a coach and invite your friends and family over and say, hey, I’m learning this with you guys. You don’t have to be the guru. You don’t have to have all the answers.

You know, even now, as America’s Constitution coach, when I host a class, first thing I say at the beginning of the classes, I’m not a guru, I’m learning with you. I might be a lawyer and all that, but listen, I’m constantly learning new stuff about the Constitution. It’s part of why I love WallBuilders Live and get the hostess program with David and Tim, just getting to listen to these guys, I’m always learning something new.

And that’s the attitude we all need to have. So that can be you. You be the one that puts people in a room together, invite them over and says, hey, listen, we’re here to learn together.
