Rick:

Welcome to the intersection of faith and the culture.  This is WallBuilders Live! Where we talk about today”€™s hottest topics on policy, faith, and the culture. We always do that from a Biblical, historical, and Constitutional perspective.

Today we are doing that with David Barton, America’s premier historian and the founder of WallBuilders. Also, Tim Barton, national speaker, pastor, and president of WallBuilders. And my name is Rick Green, I’m a former Texas legislator.

Polls And Stats On Where Our Nation Is Headed

David:

I”€™ve got some stats here that indicate that we’re starting to see a restrengthening of what we used to call the nuclear family or the traditional American family, that is a man and a woman living together having kids.

Tim:

Why is it called the nuclear family?

David:

I’ve always wondered that and it took me a long time to figure out what that was. I kept looking it up and it said nuclear family is traditional family, man and woman. Maybe that’s the nucleus of society. Maybe that’s where it comes from. That is the nuclear family because family is the nucleus.

Tim:

It makes sense. That’s not what we learned in education growing up. But as far as nucleus the center, the central, the family, the strength, the structure I definitely can see that connection. But it’s interesting I’ve heard that before. I certainly don’t hear it very much now, but I’ve heard it before and never really knew where that came from.

David:

There was years that I heard the nuclear family and scratched my head said, “€œWhat is that?”€ So, I looked into it and that’s what I just consider a Biblical model of a family. What we got in stats-, we know from statistics- Rick I don’t know if you know this, our new book is now out. The book called This Precarious Moment and that’s the book that Jim Garlow and I did.

It deals with six issues that are in the news right now, big issues. It looks at them from historical, Biblical, and a statistical perspective. One of those issues that is that it covers is where we are with the family as it relates to, for example, racism.

The reason we look at that is because the stats are really clear that if you have a family with a man and a women having kids that married family does some much more on economic output. For example, the average median income of a married couple is about $72,000.  If you’re a single mother your average median income is about $33,000. That’s less than half.

So, when you get a man and woman together in a home the income goes through the roof. When children are raised in a home where there’s a mother and a father in the home their educational achievement goes through the roof. They’re delinquent behavior goes through the floor. All the right things happen all the wrong things don’t happen. I can’t say all, but statistically speaking, it moves in that direction very dramatically.

So, we know that having the traditional family, again, a man and woman married having kids in that married relationship it has a huge impact on society.

Now, it’s been going the wrong way for a number of years. In the 1940s only 5% of children were born outside of marriage. Then it just skyrocketed, by the time you get to the 90s it was 40% of all kids were born outside the marriage relationship.

Again, what that does is lower educational achievement, a higher drug use, higher gang involvement, higher misbehavior, higher juvenile delinquency problems, and all of that is correlated to that.

What we saw in the 2000″€™s was it leveled out. The nonmarital child birth rate leveled out and now for the last decade it has actually been declining. For the first time in nearly 70 years we are seeing consistent moves back towards more kids being born inside a marriage relationship of a man and a woman.

That’s really good news for the nation. It’s good news for the return to traditional values that even with the younger generation some of these values are starting to come back and again, which is not what we always hear on the news with millennials etc. Things are moving in a very positive direction and that’s really good because when it happens within the family, within the nuclear structure of a man and a woman having children in marriage, it affects every other aspect of society from economics, to criminal justice, to education, or whatever.

This Precarious Moment

Rick:

Now, that’s all very good news, but I’m going to pout on the program here a minute because like you said, I didn’t even know you had this book coming out with Jim Garlow.Tell me again the name of the book. This is one of the six issues in the book?

David:

The name of the book is This Precarious Moment. We look at six issues, racism and racial relations, we look at the issue of immigration, the issue of Israel, of millennials, we look at the issue of faith in America, and the issue of the condition of the church. Those are the six topics, if people want the book they can go to amazon.com or any of the regular distributors.

Tim:

Mentioning those six topics, it really is giving people a great understanding for where those things are. Also, you get a lot of very practical steps for what we can do as individuals to get involved and make a difference.

How can we do something to make a difference inside the church? What can we do to make a difference for faith in America? How can we reach millennials? Every topic you mention there are very practical how to”€™s.

So, it really is not just a book you read and go, “€œWe already know we have problems and now you’re outlining the problems. You’re just detailing them very well for us.”€ No, really, as we detail the issues you then highlight- Biblical position, right? We have this Biblical thought, Biblical worldview, but also highlight, “€œHere’s what you can do as an individual to make a difference. Here’s here’s how you can impact in effect this. And here’s why this really matters to American culture to American way of life for you and your family.”€

It is an incredibly relevant book. Very practical and something that I think every individual that reads it will will be grateful they spent the time to read it. They invested in purchasing. Whether it’s online or the physical copy, whatever it is, they’ll be very grateful they spent that time and money to gain the knowledge and content because it’s going to give them encouragement and also some great marching directives for what they can do to really make a difference.

Rick:

This Precarious Moment.

David:

Yes, it’s called, “€œThis precarious moment.”€ It’s been out now for just a couple of days. So it’s a brand new fresh book.

Rick:

Holy Land Tour

Church Under Attack By The State Of Illinois

Rick:

We’re back, thanks for staying with us here on WallBuilders Live! The next piece of good news on this Good News Friday comes from Tim Barton, Tim?

Tim:

All right, well, this is a piece of good news related to a bad court decision being overturned. This is really interesting. It’s coming out of out of Illinois. One of the bolded words says, “€œChicago”€ so I’m not sure if it originated in Chicago. This is one of the cases that Alliance Defending Freedom took up and they took care of.

It is a 5o1C3, it is a nonprofit organization. They were founded in 2001, it’s By the Hand Club for kids it’s a ministry of the Moody church. Since 2001 they’ve been a non for profit. They, as an organization or a ministry, out from under the church- and really what they’ve done is a lot of things for young people.

Well, Chicago, specifically Illinois came out- the state of Illinois said, “€œWait a second, we think you should be taxable because even though you’re doing these charitable things, we don’t think you’re doing it for religious reasons.”€

Let me back up and remind you that this was was part of the Moody church. This is where this organization was born from Moody church. This organization actually has normal religious activities which include chapel services, Bible studies, discipleship, prayer, and worship. Yet, they were told that we don’t really think you’re religious, you’re not operated primarily for religious purposes, is what they were told.

They also were told, “€œWhen you got your tax exempt status”€ -and this is a quote I’m reading, “€œThings were run a little bit differently around here.”€ So, they’re told that when you were granted that privilege of being tax exempt because you’re non for profit, your a ministry, you’re doing these charitable things, we’ve really kind of changed our position. We don’t really think even though you’re incredibly religious we don’t really think you’re run for religious purposes. Just ludicrous on so many levels.

Alliance Defending Freedom Wins Case Against Church

The good news is that Alliance Defending Freedom did win this, it was overturned, By The Hand Club for kids is able to once again be tax exempt. It really is kind of crazy Rick, the battles that we are seeing where you see sometimes these Christian organizations that get targeted.

The reason we have good news Friday is to highlight the fact that, “€œHey, we are winning the vast majority of these situations, of these cases.”€ When people are willing to stand up, when they have the courage and fortitude to fight, right?

The history of our nation, the precedent of our laws, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, it is all on our side, the side of religious liberty. It’s crazy we’re having to fight these battles. Again, great news is we’re winning these, but it’s just very interesting how often we are seeing governments. Whether it be a state or federal government, come out against religious organizations, religious institutions, or religious people in general. And how much we’re having to fight this tax.

The reason we have Good News Friday again is because we win so many of these. So, not to discourage people. Be courageous, stand up, be bold for your faith. But we certainly are seeing a culture and an environment where it’s not unusual to see these attacks come out against us even though if we have the courage to stand up and fight we win the vast majority of these.

Donations And Tax Exemptions Benefit The Government

Rick:

Yeah, just to address that from a from a policy perspective, if we step back and think about this for a minute, it just makes sense that you would want to give tax exempt status to encourage people to donate to an organization that is doing good work in the community and serving the needs of the community because that means you have to spend less tax dollars in government trying to step in and solve those problems.

As we’ve talked about program on the program many times, we know that when private organizations do these things they do them so much more effectively and for so much less money and actually change lives for the better and not just send a check.

We want to encourage philanthropy, we want to encourage nonprofit status for these private organizations to go meet these needs rather than government trying to do it and almost always doing it ineffectively.

So, from a policy perspective it just makes sense. Like you said, it’s crazy that these groups because of their hostility towards religion don’t want Non-Profit status for these religious organizations or private groups that have religious faith at the base of who they are. They’re actually hurting themselves. They’re shooting themselves in the foot by fighting nonprofit status for these groups because it means they’re going to end up spending more in taxes in the long run.

It just nonsensical but sometimes we’re blinded by our our our hatred of things and that’s the depravity of man. But in this case, thankfully like you said, we have these groups out there that stand up and fight for defending the rights of these individuals and groups to have that nonprofit status. So that means the people in those communities are going to benefit as a result of that. Stay with us folks, we are going to take a quick break, we’ll be right back with more good news. Interview With Jim Garlow

Rick:

Welcome back, that you for staying with us her on WallBuilders Live, this is Good News Friday I just now found out that David Barton just did a book with Jim Garlow so guess who we got on the phone during the break? Pastor Jim Garlow, good to have you back brother!

Pastor Garlow:

It is a joy to be with you my friend.

Rick:

I’m the last one to know around here. I just found out you guys got a new book coming out, This Precarious Moment, Six Urgent Steps That Will Save Your family and Our Country. How exciting man. I love all your stuff anyway, but now you’re teaming up with my buddy Barton, this is going to be good.

Pastor Garlow:

The book is great not because of me but that book is great because that David Barton, I can tell you that.

Rick:

What made you guys decide to collaborate on this one?

Pastor Garlow:

At the end of December and early January I sensed the Holy Spirit saying that our nation, specifically the church in the nation, has a limited amount of time to resolve four issues Scripturally.

This was end of December 2016. The first issue was racial healing, in the midst of racial strife. This won’t surprise anybody. The second on was that the immigration issue be resolved Biblically and scripturally. The third one was that we have a renewal or a revival among millennials of Biblical thinking. The fourth one was that we have a re-establishment of an appropriate relationship as a nation with Israel.

Since that time, the fourth one has been resolved a great deal with the current president, he has done so much to establish such wonderful relationships with Israel. But the other three are unresolved. The immigration issues, racial strife, thinking among millennials on a Biblical and scriptural issues as it pertains to our broader culture.

So, I went to a publisher, Regnery publisher. They’ve done my previous book and their located just three blocks from the U.S. Capitol. I was sitting there in their office with the president of the company talking about a another book title.

I just happened to share with her my concern of these four issues. I felt God said we have a limited time not only for the Trump administration, or for our nation to resolve it, but for the church to be involved. She just looked at me says, “€œWright on that instead.”€ So I said, “€œWell, can David Barton be my my co-author with me?”€ And she said, “€œYes.”€

Then David and I had two more things. The other two things are re-establishment understanding of the Judeo Christian foundations our nation, going back to the historical roots, and then the last one is let the church start acting like the church. Let the church be the church.

So those six issues all came together. Then David and I came together in that particular format. We were very excited to jump in and start riding together. I want to say, I had the idea for the original four, by virtue of bringing David on, I’m telling you, the book was improved 100 times over of what it would have been had I not had him.

It was a joy to write with him and he’s got such a great research team in the background working. It really was a glove on a hand that just fit so well as we put this book out together.

If We Stay On This Path Our Nation Is In Bad Shape

Rick:

Well, you guys have collaborated many times over the years on projects and conferences and different things. I love the fact you have this book coming out. It”€™s out this week actually, and of course we’re going to get you back next week when we get David and you able to talk together about it.

I”€™ve got to ask you about that, you say in the in the book, “€œAmerica is at a crisis point. We have a limited amount of time to get this right. The nation must get back on track or be forever derailed.”€ Reading straight from there. Jim, I think you’re 100 percent right. Some people will say, “€œAha, just scare tactics, blah, blah.”€ This the real deal man. You’re looking at what’s happening culturally and saying, “€œWe know from history if we stay on this path our nation is in bad shape.”€

Pastor Garlow:

Our church has a ministry in Washington D.C. Members of Congress and then some of the agencies there like the various departments-We have a ministry at the United Nations trying to make a difference there. We have a ministry in Jerusalem. And when you see what’s going on in our world, what”€™s going on in our nations, around the world, our world is on fire and so is our nation.

Anybody who knows intricately what is happening in the governmental arenas of our nation becomes aware that we are at a crisis moment. It is not an overstatement, it’s not hyperbole, it’s not spin, it’s not melodrama. We’re at a crisis moment.

David and I wanted to do whatever part we can in the release of this book together to try to educate and help people understand what they can do. A person can say, “€œI can”€™t I make a difference in racial healing issues.”€ Yes you can. We have some practical steps. “€œWell immigration, how we resolve that?”€ We give the steps that we think are right on. We get some steps on how to reach out to millennials. We give steps on the issue of Israel. All of these we try to give be very practical in the end of each section so people can know.

In addition we have a video version, by that I mean that  there’s 12 videos that David and I have done together on this book based upon this book, the content of the book and that’s available. Poll Shows Growing Support For President Trump

Rick:

We’re back on WallBuilders Live. Thanks for staying with us on this Good News Friday. Thanks to Jim Garlow for jumping on the phone telling us a little bit about the new book today as well. We will have him back a little later for a full interview but let’s get one more piece of good news for we close out today, David?

David:

Well, there’s several little pieces of good news related to what’s going on with the Trump administration. You can kind of group all together. What I find interesting about these pieces of good news is that this is stuff that just flat is not getting covered in mainstream media.  

They are still pretty phobic about Trump and hating them, just determined to take him down whatever. Ok, so that’s your position, fine but you shouldn’t ignore what is actually going on in the nation.

For example, after Trump had that call with the president of Mexico and when they announced that the new agreement on NAFTA, they changed provisions that made it much more favorable for America. The stocks went through the ceiling. They busted the 26,000 barrier and Dow Jones- just all sorts of immediate repercussions.

Dow Jones, we realize this is not a gold indicator or a gold standard in the sense that if it goes up on Dow that’s really good for the nation. But it’s just another one of the general trends were that the economy has been moving so far up and it is broken so many barriers now that Trump has announced various policies.

Here’s another one to throw out. We talked even just a week or two ago about how that African-Americans support for Trump had grown from like 9 percent up into the 20 percent and now I’ve got an article right here that says Trump at 36 percent approval among African-Americans, new poll finds.

His support among what would not be considered a traditional constituency for Trump. At least, the way the media reports it. Trump is doing very very well in those nontraditional constituencies. Now, does that translate to elections in the fall? Who knows? We know the Democrats are absolutely motivated in higher numbers than we’ve ever seen in an off year election to turn out. But nonetheless, there’s just a lot of interesting things happening in the nation now with a number of recent polls, a number of recent reports that are very favorable for Trump. That is just absolutely silenced the media. So it’s good for the nation. It’s good for the health of the nation that these things are happening it’s too bad the media ignores them.

Rick:
