Faith And The CultureÂ
Rick:
Welcome to the intersection of faith and the culture. This is WallBuilders Live! Where we”re talking about today”s hottest topics on policy, faith, and the culture, always doing that from a Biblical, historical, and Constitutional perspective.
We’re here with David Barton, America’s premier historian and the founder of WallBuilders. Also, Tim Barton, national speaker and President of WallBuilders, and my name is Rick Green, I’m a former Texas state legislator, national speaker, and author. We’re looking forward to some good news today. Guys, let’s jump into some of that good news. David Barton is going to start us with good news, and then we’ll have Tim Barton next. I’m ready.
David:
Rick, I”m going to give some stats that relate to immigration and refugees, particularly the refugee part of immigration. We know there’s illegal immigration, there’s legal immigration, and there’s refugees. Refugees are those that need asylum in some way, shape, fashion, or form.Â
So what has happened in the last two or so years has been a radical numerical shift in what”s occurring in the nature of refugees. We’ve talked about in the program before how that we have what’s called the Nazarene Fund saving persecuted Christians, and throughout the years of the Obama administration we really were not able to bring refugee Christians to the United States, which is why we sent them to Australia, and Brazil, and Slovakia, and Canada, and etc.Â
But things are now changing.Â
Good News About Refugees
By the way, under that years the Obama administration, when you look at the refugees coming, and think of ISIS moving all across the Middle East, and who are they targeting? Well, they’re particularly targeting Christians. They’re going after a lot of others as well, but, for example, when you look at fiscal year 2014, of all the refugees that came in, Muslims and Christians were about even. 1.6%Â more Christians than Muslims, the next year, in 2015, it was 4% more Christians than Muslims, and 2016 it was 1.7% more Muslims than Christians.Â
So they’ve been kinda even, kind of balanced, about the same number of Muslims and Christians. But now, under Trump, it’s been real different. He told us specifically when he came in, “I’m going to make sure that we protect Christians because they’re the ones being targeted. They’re the ones being killed at a higher rate and a higher percentage.” So now we have numbers from the last two years. We’re looking back on a fiscal year, but and fiscal year 2018 it was 55% more Christians than Muslims, and fiscal year of 2019, which is just ending right now, is 63% more Christians than Muslims. So what we’re seeing is really significant protection of Christians coming in as refugees, which was also significant.Â
Actually, that was a significant concern on security as well because Christians are not the ones coming in with terrorist links.Â
Tim:
And especially considering that Christians are one of the groups that is so heavily targeted and persecuted. We don’t oppose anybody who wants to come to America, and embrace American values and ideals, and assimilate to America, and live the American dream. We would cheer anybody who wants to do that.Â
Christian Immigrants Granted Asylum
But one of the things that we saw under President Obama is they were very restrictive, as you mentioned, some of these Christian groups. Now we’re not seeing the same level of restriction. And when you consider that the greatest persecution in the world is targeting Christians, that we are not only allowing Christians, but we are actually bringing in more Christians, also speaks the fact not just that we are promoting Christianity.Â
We want to embrace people in need, but that even as you mentioned, there are certain demographics that tend to embrace and assimilate to American values a little better, and some that tend to have more terrorist ties than others. This is why even President Trump identified certain nations that we probably shouldn’t bring in immigrants from this time, because we know how many terrorists have come from those nations. There are certain things that make sense. Nonetheless, it is good news that our nation is now in a place that we are embracing these Christian immigrants.
David:
One more piece of good news, also on an international front, jumps to Brazil. You may recall Brazil had an election in which they elected a very conservative president. He was kind of called the Trump of Brazil. It was a surprise election. Brazil has been a very socialist, very Marxist country, and we talked about how that he has said, “We’re putting the socialism behind us. We’re getting away from that.”Â
Brazil turns Away from Socialism
Well he has now made news again, and he has instructed the Ministry of Education in Brazil to prohibit gender ideology in Brazil schools. He met at the White House with President Trump, and then has joint statement. He said was one of the goals is to get Brazil out of the worst positions in international education rankings, and to combat the Marxist rubbish that is spread in our educational institutions.Â
So he considers gender ideology part of the Marxist rubbish that he doesn’t want in the institutions. He wants to see high educational scores. So this is what he said about the country.Â
He said, “We’re going to unite the people, rescue the family, respect religions and our Judeo Christian tradition, combat gender ideology, and conserve our values.”Â
So that’s from the new serving president of Brazil. He is definitely taking that country in a different direction, and is very openly pro Christian, pro Bible, and pro free market, which is a new step in Brazil’s history.Â
Rick:
Very good news. I love getting good news, even outside the U.S., because it’s good trends all the way around. We’re gonna take a quick break, we’ll be right back. Tim Barton”s got the next piece of good news, so don’t go anywhere. You”re listening to WallBuilders Live.

Trump Stands Against the U.N to Block Abortions
Rick:
Welcome back. Thanks for staying with us on WallBuilders Live. It”s Good News Friday today. If you’re enjoying all this good news we’re gonna share with you, then you should know there is more on the website! Be sure and visit WallBuildersLive.com and check out the archives section. You can go to some of those past Friday programs there.Â
Tim Barton, give us some more good news!
Tim:
All right guys. There has been a lot of talk over the last few days and weeks about President Trump and the U.N. speech, and what he talked about, and what he got into. One of the things that stuck out as being so significant was when he talked about unborn life, and he defended that every child, born and unborn, as a sacred gift from God. He then went on to attack how the U.N. had what he called, essentially, these global bureaucrats. They’ve attempted to assert global right to taxpayer funded abortion on demand right up until the moment of delivery.
The U.N. has agencies that have really attacked some of these various nations who—I think the the list right now is there’s 121 nations or countries—are members of the U.N., who currently limit abortion or prohibit abortion on demand, whether it’s for a social or economic reasons, they’re subjected to criticism and pressure from U.N. entities. So the U.N. is against one 121Â nations—which the majority of the U.N. nations, because the U.N. right is not even over 200 nations, and one hundred and twenty one of them are against abortions.
“Every Child is a Gift from God”
The majority of the U.N. is against abortion, but the U.N. has not held positions that are pro-life positions. But President Trump came out and slammed the U.N., and defended that every child is a gift from God. Just absolutely incredible. This is one of those things that, when President Trump was running for president, we weren’t really sure where he was going to stand on this issue because he had no track record.
He was saying pro-life things, but we weren’t really sure.
Never would we have imagined that not only would he promote life, but he would stand up to the entire world at the U.N. and say, “Nope, we believe every child is a gift from God.”Â
He actually tells the U.N., “You have no business attacking the sovereignty of nations that wish to protect innocent life.”Â
He said that’s what we’re going to do in America. When he said that I thought, “Oh, God, help us really do that in America, because we’re one of the few nations that still allow third trimester abortions.”Â
Obviously there’s problems we want to be fixed in our nation. But the fact that we have a leader standing up to do that is a really good piece of good news.Â
The other pieces of good news I have is from Ohio, and it says, “Planned Parenthood closes two centers after President Trump defunds abortion business.”Â
ABC News reported that there were two Planned Parenthood facilities in Springdale and Western Hills, kind of around the Cincinnati area that were closing down.Â
Ultimately, they’re closing down because they don’t have enough business. Women are not showing up.Â
Planned Parenthood Defunded
But one of the things President Trump has also done is, with a title 10 funding, he said, “We’re not going to fund organizations that either provide abortions or are referring women to get abortions. That’s not what we’re funding.”Â
So Planned Parenthood has lost millions upon millions of dollars, and that the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood for the Southwest region, which is Kersh Deeble, blames the Title 10 rule and the pro-life laws being passed in Ohio as the reason they were having to close these two facilities.Â
So whether it’s just that women in Ohio are now not wanting as many abortions, or if it really is President Trump and the Title 10—which is what this Planned Parenthood individual says—either way, this is amazing that you have the president of our nation, who is standing up to other nations, who in our own nation saying, “We’re not funding this anymore. We’re not going to fund organizations that promote this.”Â
This is such incredible news! We have prayed as Christians for so long that God would deliver us from this evil of abortion in our nation, and we never would have guessed that President Trump was going to be part of that instrument that God is using to make a difference. Nonetheless, really good news both from the U.N. and from right back here in the States with what President Trump has done helping to change some of those abortion policies in America.
Standing Up Against Bullies
Rick:
And like you said, to do this on an international level, to stand up to, frankly, the bullies out there that want to silence the pro-life voice. He has become a megaphone for these issues. We’ve always we’ve complained, “Where’s the backbone. Where are the people that will speak up for the most innocent?”Â
This president certainly is very, very good news. Stay with us folks. We’ve got more good news for you here on WallBuilders Live.

Defending Free Speech in College
Rick:
Welcome back! Thanks for staying with us here on WallBuilders Live. It”s Good News Friday today, and the next piece of good news comes from David Barton.
David:
I’m going to Wisconsin, and I’m going to a college in Wisconsin, and there is an interesting thing that happened to this college in Wisconsin. There was a 29 year old student at the college who was giving out Valentine’s cards, and here’s some of the things that were on the cards.
“You are special.” “You are loved and cared for.” “Jesus loves you.” “God is love.”Â
These are all Valentine’s cards.
Tim:
That sounds pretty offensive so far. I can sense there is going to be a problem coming that if Jesus loves you, that’s probably not accepted on college campus.
David:
Yeah. That’s right. And they shut her down because they said her handing out those cards with things like you’re special and God is love. They said that was the displaying and the mass distribution of literature that had offensive content, and that was likely or intended to cause a disruption.Â
Well, what kind of disruption are you gonna get from handing out your special, your loved and cared for etc.? Sure sounds like hateful literature.
It was so offensive. I just can’t believe she even did something like that. Well, fortunately when they shut her down, her comment was, “I wanted to stand up for my constitutional rights and those of others.”Â
Bias Response Teams
So she stood up, but the school wouldn’t back down. She got an attorney. They went to court, and a federal judge has spanked the college and says, “You can’t do this. What are you thinking? There is a constitution. There is a right to free speech. This certainly was not disruptive and it was not offensive.”Â
Well, it could have been offensive content to somebody because everything is probably offensive to somebody, but it’s a great victory.Â
And bless her heart. Just trying to hand out wholesome stuff, and they shut her down because it has a biblical, religious, uplifting, inspiring kind of message. But she wins the case, and so that’s really good.
If I jump over to a close state there, into Michigan, there is a lawsuit in Michigan that was won, and it also deals with a campus in Michigan and—wait a minute, before I do this.
If I tell you guys natural disaster response team, what do you think of?Â
Tim:
FEMAÂ
David:
FEMA. You think of something that moves pretty quickly and—
Tim:
Unless I was thinking of FEMA. That’s right. But no,you’re right. If you were talking about, for example, a military emergency response, I would think an emergency response team has been much quicker. Siren goes off, call comes in, and you grab bags and you run. You are moving quick.
David:
So, in that model, in colleges, many of them have a bias response team. So if a report of bias comes in they arm everybody. They rush to say that, they do all the triage and all the stuff is necessary.
Tim:
That also sounds slightly subjective, because who determines bias?Â
A Threat to Free Speech
Rick:
I”m just laughing at the triage statement, and just in visiting this like psychological warfare is like.Â
“How are your feelings? Put them on the table!! Get out the bandages! Quick! Their emotions are wounded!”Â
David:
Well it literally is that, because the University of Michigan had a bias response team.
Tim:
I want to know, do they show up with puppies?
Rick:
Do they bring a portable safe room? Is it padded?
David:
Anyway, if there is a report of bias response, they mobilize immediately to provide treatment or whatever it is. Here are the subjects on which they mobilize. These are the topics. There were more than 150 expressions that will cause mobilizations.Â
Grab this: gun rights. They had to mobilize because somebody talked about the right to keep and bear arms.
They mobilized over illegal immigration, over abortion, over the welfare system, over gender identity, over affirmative action, and over Title 9, which is men’s and women’s sports.
So this is the stuff that the University of Michigan says, “If you hear some of this going on, if you hear someone talk about this, let us know. We’ll get that biased response team on in a hurry and we’ll take care of all the damage that’s occurred.”Â
Well, a federal judge actually upheld this, would not enjoined this, and of the federal appeals court said, basically, “Lower court judge, you got a dead wrong.”Â
They said, “Having a biased response team implies the threat of punishment and it’s intimidation to quell the speech on campus.”Â
So this team, just by its very existence, is a threat to free speech. If you can have a biased response team that moves in whenever you have some kind of conservative topic come up, that’s a threat to free speech.Â
“You Cannot Have a Bias Response Team”
This court of appeals has said, “You cannot, in a state university, have a bias response team.”Â
That is a huge victory for free speech. They probably need a lot of triage for professors now who are really upset that they can’t limit free speech on campus. But that’s another great ruling dealing with colleges, universities, and wins, that we’re having in colleges.Â
Rick:
That’s super good news! It’s what we’ve been saying all along, that when you have these kind of things, it chills free speech. It causes people to be afraid to simply speak what they believe.Â
Quick break guys. We’ll be back with one more segment of good news. Stay with us, You’re listening to WallBuilders Live.Â
Moment From American History
This is Tim Barton with another moment from American history. As the American War for Independence began, the president of Yale was the Reverend Naphtali Daggett. When New Haven, the home of Yale, came under attack about a hundred citizens rushed out to meet the British.Â
The Reverend Daggett galloped by them on horseback, his clearable robes flowing behind him in the wind. He took up a solitary position atop a hill. The 2,500 British soon put the townsfolk to flight but the Reverend Daggett continued to stand alone firing down on the advancing troops.Â
A British officer confronted him, “What are you doing there you old fool? If I let you go, will you ever fire again on the troops of his majesty?” Nothing more likely was the preacher’s reply. America’s early pastors personally confronted danger and courageously led their communities.

Church Funds Weddings for Cohabitating Couples
Rick:
Welcome back to WallBuilders Live! Thanks for staying with us for this Good News Friday! One more segment of good news, and Tim’s got the last piece of good news with him.
Tim:
Alright guys, we have actually had a guy who’s a pastor of Concord Church in Dallas, his name is Brian Clark. He was the one if you guys remember who was challenging all the people in his church who were cohabiting, living with someone they weren”t married to. He said, “Look, you got to do something different. This isn’t what God wants from you. You need to either tie the knot or move out. Either get married or break this off, but you shouldn’t just be living together.”Â
We talked about how awesome it was and we interviewed him, and he said that the church was going to pay for weddings for everybody.
They were gonna buy the wedding dresses, and tuxedos, and the rings, and just, for a church to do this, is absolutely incredible.
I think initially they had roughly 30 couples sign up.Â
I have an article that talks about the ceremony that actually took place. They actually had 24 couples walk down the aisle, and in order for them to walk down the aisle, they had to go through 90 days of counseling—marriage counseling—from the church.Â
So now you not only are we promoting marriage, we’re going to make sure that you understand what it means to be in a biblical, committed, marriage relationship. How do you do that? What is it like?Â
An Increase in Cohabitation
Just reading some of the testimony is an example, it’s so incredible, and get some of that a minute. But one of the things that this article points out is one of the reasons that Pastor Carter thought this was so important is, when you look at the Census Bureau, and it has data for the last many, many years, but it even keeps track of people that are cohabiting, and the numbers are increasing by the millions almost every year. So this is becoming much more the norm, the standard, the acceptable way of life.Â
One of the things that’s interesting about this so often we look at at millennials and how the new generation is GenZ, and we target them as being people with problems, and certainly they do have problems there’s no doubt, but one of the growing numbers where baby boomers choosing to cohabitate. Whether they had broken marriages, it didn’t work, they”re not getting married again, they”re going to live with somebody. This is a growing trend not just among young people, but among a culture in general, which is why it’s even more significant that churches are standing up and saying, “Hey guys, let’s talk about how marriage should be what it should look like.”Â
And one of the things we know culturally, the data is there, it backs it up, that all this scientific data has been done, the evidence it’s completely confirming the best thing for individuals snf for societies is strong marriages. Strong families to strong societies. So if you want to have a strong nation, you need strong marriages.Â
How Are Marriages Built?
How are those built? Well, churches are really arguably the best place to do that. So the fact that you have a pastor standing up to do this is really incredible. The article closes out with him saying that his vision and mission is not just to get people married.Â
He says, “I hope it connects them to the heart of God, that they know that God loves them and God has a plan for them. I pray they’ll become witnesses to their and families, to their friends, and I just pray that it really ignites something in them.”Â
That’s what God has called us to do. So this pastor standing up doing something really incredible.
David:
And by the way, your little comment on baby boomers and how they’re moving in cohabitation, one of the incentives that contributes to that is actually the government tax code is if you are if you’re not married you get more government benefits. You get more opportunities tax wise than if you are married. So we have a tax code that actually disincentives marriage, which is not a good position. What is really cool is then, when you come back, you have these couples who are getting away from cohabitation and going to marriage because the Bible’s going to make the rewards greater than anything the government can give them. So the benefit of being married is so much higher.
Rick:
And that’s really cool to see to see, these cohabiting couples come together in marriage.
That”s all the time we’ve got for good news today, folks. Thanks so much for tuning in to Good News Friday here on WallBuilders Live.Â
