Faith And The Culture

Rick:

Welcome to the intersection of faith and the culture, this is WallBuilders Live! Where we”€™re talking about today”€™s hottest topics on policy, faith, and the culture, all of it from a Biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective.

That conversation today with David Barton, America’s premier historian and our founder here at WallBuilders. Also, Tim Barton, national speaker, pastor, and president of WallBuilders. And my name is Rick Green, I’m a former Texas state rep, national speaker, and author.

Later in the program, I’ll have Pastor Matthew Hagee with us. By the way folks, the Web site is WallBuilders.com, our main website, lots of great information there. Then also WallBuildersLive.com, it has a list of our stations across the country that carry the program. You can also go into the archives section there and check out some of the past programs over the last few weeks.

Occupying Until He Comes

David, Tim, Matt is going to talk to us later about his new book. I”€™ve got to ask you guys, we have seen an exodus of Christians that left the arena of cultural influence, whether that’s politics, or media, or whatever it might be 25-30 years ago because they believed Jesus was coming back tomorrow.

So, when we talk later in the program about prophecy and about the things that are coming to pass in the world right now, right before our eyes, I think we should probably preempt that conversation with the idea that even when you look at this stuff, you never have an excuse to check out of the process and say, “€œOh well, I guess I don’t need to worry about what’s going on in my backyard right now, today.”€

David:

I was just writing a university professor a note, I was telling him some of the plans we have. Some of his plans go decades in the future, and I put a little note in there saying, “€œListen, you need to understand right up front I’m a huge believer in the second coming of Christ because the Bible says that. But the Bible also says that Jesus doesn’t know when that’s going to happen. I sure don’t know when that’s going to happen. So what I’m going to do is I’m going to live with the belief that it will happen but I’m going to keep acting on what I’m supposed to do.”€

I continued, “€œJesus said, “€˜Occupy until I come.”€™ I’m not going to change anything that I’m going to do except I’m going to make sure that I’m prepared for him. I don’t want to get surprised if he comes back and I’m not ready for him. I’m going to be prepared for him. So I’m telling you my plans for the next several decades on the contingency that if he comes back, he’ll screw it all up and we’re all going to be happy with that. But I’m not going to let the second coming affect anything I do different or pushed downstream what I’m doing.”€

Tim:

So often Jesus talked about in his parables the kingdom of God, the kingdom of heaven, is just like this. One of the parables from Matthew 25 was of the wise and the fools of virgins. There were five who were prepared, they were ready because they had that oil and the lamp. The bridegroom comes in, “€œWe’re here, we”€™re rejoicing.”€

Of course, we want to live our lives to be ready, but because no man knows the day or the hour, then you have to live every day being ready. This is one of those practical realities of life.

If you are waiting in your basement on your prayer rug for the return of Christ then you’re not actually living ready because for the next 40 years that’s all you do, well then you can’t pay your bills, you can’t put food in your belly, or take care of your kids-

David:

You can’t occupy until he comes.

Tim:

Right, there’s a whole lot left off that list. This is where, just practically speaking, we want to be prepared for when the bridegroom comes. But part of being prepared is, you know what, I’m going to make sure that my family, my wife and I, were in the process. We’re trying to expand our family, in the sense of we were trying to have kids. So, if this is what it is, you know what, I want to make sure that when I bring kids in this world that I can actually have a roof over their head, that I can give food to their belly.

David:

And have a better culture than what we”€™ve got right now.

Tim:

Absolutely. I’m going to live my life training and preparing the next generation, trying to give them a better life than even I was blessed with, trying to help them have a better culture, a better community, than what I grew up in. I’m going to do everything I can for the next generation.

In the midst of it, I’m going to try to make sure that I’m ready when Christ does return. Rick, you’re right, so often when we think about Bible prophecy, the return of Christ, we just think of it so differently than the early church did then really theologically we should have thought about it, at least over the last 30-40 years.

Hopefully, now people are starting to come back around in a different perspective. But you’re right, for the last 20-40 years or whatever it’s been, we’ve had a pretty poor idea in our theological perspective of the return of Christ.

David:

Anything that makes you check out of the culture, anything that causes you to be less salt and less light, anything that causes you to be less involved, is violating exactly what God told us to do.

So there’s no way he’s going to have prophecies out there that cause us to want to get out and check out and not do something. That is contradictory to his word. So when you hear prophecies and hear things that come along that give you that tendency, “€œIt”€™s coming soon, I”€™ve got to put aside all this world. this stuff.”€ No, that’s not Biblical. That is not the way it works.

Tim:

To say that he’s coming soon, obviously, that’s what we can support, “€œHey, he’s coming soon.”€ He is, we’re obviously closer to it now than we were 2,000 years ago. So, relatively speaking, it is soon, we don’t know when. But you’re right, we don’t sit back and wait for it to happen. We’re going to be salt and light in the midst of everything we do in the midst of waiting for it.

That’s something that certainly, we understand prophecy. In the context of the Bible, Biblical principles, Biblical truth, we should think of prophecy in a very different way than perhaps we do.

David:

It’s interesting that you’ve got Matt Hagee here who is the second generation Hagees, if you will. Because John Hagee is a well-known national guy. Now Matt is running the church and I don’t know, it’s 12-15000 people there in the church. Matt is extremely relevant, extremely checked into the culture, extremely on what’s going on, and he has a daily TV news program that looks at the issues of the day right then. So this is not a check out culture, and that’s good news because that’s the younger generation getting it right.

Rick:

Yeah, and frankly both Hagee’s have always been very involved in what is going on in the culture and around the world and actually applying Scripture to that. So even as we approach Matts new book that he’s come out with that is basically saying, “€œLook, a lot of these prophecies are coming true, you need to be thinking about what that means in your life and in the world around us.”€

They’ve still got that approach or stay involved in the culture, it”€™s really an interesting thing, interesting things in the book. Matthew Hagee when we come back. stay with us, you’re listening to WallBuilders Live.

Moment From American History

This is Tim Barton from WallBuilders with another moment from American history. The year after the American War for independence ended we began addressing the issue of Muslim terrorists in North Africa who were attacking American ships, killing, and enslaving American seamen.

Congress dispatched John Adams and Thomas Jefferson to negotiate peace. And when they asked the Muslim ambassador the reason for the unprovoked attacks. He told them that it was written in their Qur’an. That it was their right and duty to make war upon them whenever they could be found.

Sixteen years of negotiations failed and in 1801 America sent its military to crush the terrorists. When that war ended in 1805 the first American edition of the Qur’an was published, urging Americans to read the Qur’an to see for themselves that its teachings were incompatible with the safety and peace of non-Muslims.

To see the first American Qur’an and to get more information about America’s first war on Islamic terror go to WallBuilders.com.

The Purpose Of Prophecy

Rick:

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live, thanks for staying with us today. Matt Hagee is with us, pastor their Cornerstone Church in San Antonio. New book out, also author of several other great books that you need to check out, go to Amazon right now and check them out. Shaken Not Shattered also Responsible. But the new one, Your Guide to the Apocalypse, What You Should Know Before the World Comes to An End.“€  Matt, good to have you brother.

Matt:

Great to be with you guys. How are you doing today?

Rick:

Hey, man, doing well. I”€™m excited about your new book. I think a great source, first of all, just to start to understand. A lot of people in the church, I put myself in this category, get confused by a lot of the prophecies in the Bible.

“€œHow does it apply to me today? Is this stuff that doesn’t matter for another hundred years? Or is it happening right before our eyes?”€ So thanks for putting some of it in a form where I can understand it.

Matt:

I’m glad you brought that up because that’s exactly why I wrote the book. I’ve grown up in a family and in a church where- you know, my father has committed so much time to studying, and teaching, and informing people about what Bible prophecy has to say. And sometimes people get lost in the details.

The second that starts to happen they either get confused or frustrated and just say, “€œWell, it’s just too deep and now I guess I’ll just wait and see what happens, when it happens.”€

The truth is that Bible prophecy is not written for confusion, Bible prophecy is written to do two things. One, to encourage the believers, as the Bible tells us in first Corinthians 15, that our work is not in vain, that what we’re striving for and the things that we do to you know share the gospel and continue to spread truth is indeed something that God recognizes and will reward. It’s also to bring just a word of understanding and warning to individuals that don’t believe and need to understand the days and times in which we live.

God Has Purposed Everything

Rick:

Let me get you back up to the encouraging part. Most of the time when we start talking prophecy everybody thinks, “€œOh, they’re just trying to scare me.”€ What you’re saying is, “€œNo, this is actually an encouragement to believers. First of all, there is truth, God has a plan, and this helps you see where you fit in the plan.”€

Matt:

Exactly. I tell people, “€œThe Bible is supernatural. It’s not spooky natural.”€ There’s a lot of people that have used the concept of the end times, as we call it the apocalypse, to really kind of be a scare tactic. But the truth of the matter is, is that the story remains that God is in perfect control and he’s using the affairs of man on earth to bring about what he has established from the beginning of time.

Now, if you’re walking in his word if you’re doing the things that he requires of you, that’s an encouragement because it means that he is still in charge even when it looks like the world around us is in total chaos.

You don’t have to look very far these days to see that there’s a lot of situations and circumstances that are beyond our natural ability to control, whether it’s a riot in the streets or it’s a natural disaster like we’ve seen unfold here in the Texas region. But the truth is is that God Himself is someone who will take all of these things we see as chaos and use them to progress his plan that began in the beginning of time.

Israel Prophecies Coming True

Rick:

So good. I love the approach and the attitude. One of the things that you address, in fact, I had your dad on a month or two ago, we were talking about Israel. You talk about that in the book as well. What do we see happening with Israel right now that points towards some of these prophecies?

Matt:

Well, it begins with Israel in 1948. Really, the most modern prophetic miracle in our time was the birth of Israel in 1948. In Isaiah chapter 66 the Prophet asked a question 2,500 hundred years before the fact. The question he asked Is, “€œShall a nation be born in a day?”€ And in 1948 the United Nations recognized Israel as a state.

Now, some people call that the birth of Israel. But the truth is that Israel was born in the Old Testament when God established it with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The rebirth of Israel took place in 1948.

Just a few minutes ago we were talking about how God uses the situations of earth. When you consider the history of how Harry Truman became the president of the United States, it was a very unlikely circumstance.

He was the president that took 11 minutes to recognize Israel as a state. Many people say, “€œWhy did he do it?”€ He did it primarily because he had a mother who filled his childhood with the truth of God’s word and he understood the Biblical significance of Israel.

You can’t deny the fact that when a president only takes 11 minutes to make a decision, it’s gotta be supernatural. It takes months just to figure out which office they’re going to use.

The truth of the matter is that God had him there at that time to fulfill his word. So Israel in 1948 became a very modern day miracle. Jerusalem coming under the control of the Israeli government and the Jewish people in 1967 during the Six-Day War was another major prosthetic sign.

Jesus spoke about this in the New Testament. He very clearly said that there would be a day in which Jerusalem would be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles. That day came to an end in 1967. So we have those two very significant things that are Biblical prophecies having been fulfilled in recent years that we can point to and say, “€œYou know what, his words are coming to pass.”€

I often tell people that when the Bible was written it was 98 percent prophecy and 2 percent history. Now the reverse is true. It’s 98 percent history and 2 percent prophecy. And with a track record like that, I wonder why we argue about what’s going to happen next instead of just preparing for it.

Rick:

What It Means To Have A True Apocalypse

Rick:

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live, thanks for staying with us. Pastor Matt Magee is with us, the new book, Your Guide to the Apocalypse, What You Should Know Before the World Comes to An End.“€  You can get it at JHM.org.

We’re back with Matt now. Matt, we talked a little bit about Israel, you covered a lot of other factors in the book. Tell me what you”€™re praying people will take away from the book when they read it?

Matt:

I think it’s a book that gives people the opportunity to examine where they are in their faith. Whenever you start to talk about the apocalypse, the first thing that people need to know is that the apocalypse does not really mean the end of the world.

The word apocalypse means to pull back a curtain and reveal. It’s kind of like sitting in a theater and seeing a curtain being drawn back so that the audience can see what’s on the stage. Now, so many people believe that the word, “€œapocalypse”€ regards the end of the world because in Bible prophecy when God pulled back the curtain and showed people what would happen, he showed them things would happen according to His return and the establishment of his kingdom.

So, whenever you read these things in Scripture, the thing that I think is important for people to take away is, “€œWhere am I in my walk with Christ? Am I ready to meet him when he comes? Or do I need to get ready?”€

I didn’t write this book to tell people how big the locust are going to be in the book of Revelation whenever they get to come and wreak havoc and put judgment on non-believers. I wrote this book to get as many people ready to meet the Lord as possible so we could skip out on all that.

Why We Are In The End Times

Rick:

Aman. You also cover modern day details like the price of oil, identity theft, and the world’s obsession with the environment right now. Can you give us just a couple of minutes on why those things helped to point us in the right direction?

Matt:

Certainly, let’s look at the trends of our culture. Right now we have a culture that is more self-absorbed than the culture that has ever existed at any time. Just one thing to point to it is the very fact that we’ve actually got something called a selfie. We used to take pictures of things that we wanted to remember. Now we take pictures of what we look like in the parking lot, and what we look like in the lobby, and what we look like in the chair, and what we look like back in the car.

People say, “€œWell, what’s that got to do with the end times?”€ Simply this, the Bible says, Paul, speaking to Timothy, that in the end times men will be lovers of themselves. My grandparents, they went through the Great Depression. They were part of that greatest generation that history has recorded as having to face such great challenges as World War II, and rebuilding the country in the 50″€™s, and just really a lot of wonderful accolades have been bestowed upon them because they were willing to take responsibility over whatever circumstance they came into knowing that they had to do what needed to be done to press on.

If the Biblical prophecies regarding the anti-Christ, a global dictator, who would have required people to take a mark in order to buy or sell would have come about in the time of my grandparents, they wouldn’t have taken it. They had a garden in their backyard, they had a cow for milk, they had a freezer full of stuff that they had caught, and hunted, and fished for. There wasn’t anybody who could control them because they had enough self-discipline, self-sacrifice, and personal responsibility to take care of themselves.

Now every time we see something happen in the world we see individuals willing to give up individual liberties so that they have the feeling of security. They’ll give up their rights if they feel like the government can keep them safe.

Whenever we have a society like that they are primed as individuals to have one individual walk into the middle of a catastrophe and say, “€œListen, I know how we can solve all this. I know how you can get right back to Starbucks and not worry about the things that are happening in the world today. All you need you to do is take a microchip, stick it in your hand, and you’ll be able to buy sell and trade. No one will be able to falsify your identity, everything will go back to like it was, and you won’t be bothered more.”€

That’s the kind of culture we live in today and they’ll be glad to do it. The stage is set. All of the pieces are in place, and we’ve never been at this time in our history. We’ve always had certain aspects of it that you know were present. But we’ve never been in a moment where every individual that is described, every piece of the puzzle is in place, all of the players are on the field so to speak, and it’s time to really take this matter seriously. The Bible for many centuries has said it was coming to pass.

Rick:

The books available at JHM.org, that stands for John Hagee ministries. It’s called Your Guide to the Apocalypse, What You Should Know Before the World Comes to An End,“€  by Matt Hagee.

Matt, before I let you go, what’s your word to Christians that sometimes will hear any of these things about prophecies and they think that means to check out of the culture and don’t worry about it, just sit in a prayer closet 24/7 and don’t be salt and light in the community anymore, how do you keep them from doing that?

Matt:

I always say that God didn’t put you on the face of the earth to be rescued. He put you here, as the Bible says, to occupy until he comes. If you used the analogy of a relay race, always the anchor leg of the race are the individuals that are depending to bring the victory. It’s not that God put His Church and his people on the face of the earth this season of Bible prophecy in history just to sit and watch. It’s our time to really do all that we can to let our light shine, to let truth be heard, and to impact this culture, preparing people for what the disciples of Jesus Christ expected to happen right after his resurrection. He will return and when he does he’s going to reward those who have been faithful and He is going to require those who have not to submit to his authority.

Rick:

Pastor Matthew Hagee, appreciate you, brother. Thanks for coming on, let”€™s get you back again soon.

Matt:

Always enjoy! Look forward to the next time.

Rick:

Stay with us folks, we”€™ll be right back with David and Tim Barton.

Biographical Sketches

Hi, friends! This is Tim Barton of WallBuilders. This is a time when most Americans don’t know much about American history or even heroes of the faith. I know, oftentimes as parents, we”€™re trying to find good content for our kids to read.

If you remember back in the Bible, the Book of Hebrews it has the Faith Hall of Fame, where they outlined the leaders of faith that had gone before them. Well, this is something that as Americans we really want to go back and outline some of these heroes not just of American history, but heroes of Christianity and our faith as well.

I wanted to let you know about some biographical sketches we have available on our website. One is called, “€œThe Courageous Leaders Collection“€ and this collection includes people like Abigail Adams, Abraham Lincoln, Francis Scott Key, George Washington Carver, Susanna Wesley, even the Wright brothers.

There’s a second collection called, “€œHeroes of History“€ in this collection you read about people like Benjamin Franklin, Christopher Columbus, Daniel Boone, George Washington, Harriet Tubman, the list goes on and on.

This is a great collection for your young person to have and read. And it’s a providential view of American and Christian history. This is available at WallBuilders.com.

Preparing For Christ’s Return

Rick:

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live, thanks for staying with us. Thanks to Pastor Matthew Hagee for joining us today on WallBuilders Live. Back with David and Tim Barton now. Guys, basically, Matt summed it up towards the end, what you guys were saying at the beginning of the program, this doesn’t mean you ignore what’s going on in your life, It actually should be a wake-up call to reassure you.

I love the fact that he talked even at the beginning of the interview about how this as an encouragement to Christians to say, “€œLook what God’s doing.”€ It shows that the Bible is true and that the things he said would happen are happening.

Tim:

I love that he said it, as you mention, is encouraging. But he said that this is something that as you read Revelation you’re preparing for Christ’s return, this is not fear driven and motivated. This is, “€œHey, it’s getting close, get excited, so many things are happening.”€

But I love even as he explained how we know some of these things are happening, even comparing it with the greatest generation when He said, “€œLook, you know my grandparents, they went through World War II, they went through the Great Depression. They had a freezer full of food, they had a garden, they knew how to live off things.”€

So if somebody rose up to power and said, “€œHey, we’re going to make you all do this.”€ No, nobody from that generation would have done that. “€œNo, I have a freezer of food. I’ve got a garden. I know how to hunt. I’m going to survive.”€

It was so interesting as he pointed out even in today’s culture. Anytime a crisis happens they do tend to look to government. They do say, “€œHey, we need your help.”€ As he points out, it makes it so easy then for somebody to come to that position and say, “€œHey John, crisis happened, here’s a solution, here’s how we solve this.”€

So you can see that we’re in a position where some of these things have come true but where some of them you could see how at any minute some of these things are on the verge of coming true where the Antichrist could arise. “€œHey, put this chip in your arm and that”€™s how you’re going to buy food, nobody can take your identity anymore, and now it’s secure.”€

David:

The state right now is that if America got hit with an MP which wiping out all the electronics, the experts estimate that 90 percent of America would be dead within one year because they do not know how to live on their own.

If they had to go out and farm, and hunt, and make beef jerky, or make deer jerky, or whatever, if they had the garden ninety percent of Americans who would be dead within a year if we got hit by an MP because we just don’t know how to live like that generation. You’re exactly right, it sets up a scenario where that if government comes in as a savior, you can really see things change.

Prophecies Being Fulfilled

Tim:

I love too from a very limited government perspective how he said, “€œSo often when something happens people look to government. But every time government gets involved you lose more and more of your liberties.”€ I was going, “€œYes, absolutely. That resonates with us because of our position.

Where we fall to then, is that government is not the solution in the midst of our problems and chaos. But in the midst of these fulfilled prophecies and more and more prophecies coming true, this is the time we should be turning to Jesus and getting excited because we’re getting closer to the return of Christ, not living in fear, but knowing these prophecies, because it does bring good news.

David:

And we don’t get less involved with the culture, we get more involved with the culture.
