We’re here with David now. Later in the program, Kirk Cameron will be with us – we’ll be talking about a special night coming up where you can join Kirk from all over the country as part of a Revive Us event.
Revive Us Event
David, let’s just dive in talking about what WallBuilders is about and what being salt and light is about. This name, WallBuilders, arise and rebuild the walls that we may no longer be a reproach that in and of itself says that as Christians, as believers, we have to be engaged in the culture, we have to be salt and light not hiding what we believe, but actually applying it to the culture.
Nehemiah 2:17
David:
Yeah, and as you noted, Rick, WallBuilders comes from Nehemiah 2:17 — that verse — and it is the concept of the people getting involved to rebuild that around them that has been torn down. And what you see with the book of Nehemiah is they didn’t go in to rebuild the entire nation. They just rebuilt the city where they were going to live. That happened to be Jerusalem.
And I think that’s one of the biggest problems we have today as Christians is, we like to be informed. We like to watch cable news (whatever that is), we like to get on the internet and get the news there, whatever our favorites are. But you’ve got to notice that news is really driven by national stories.
And so if you’re a cable junkie or if you’re a — you got your list of places you go for news 24/7/365, you’re going to hear national stories. You’re going to pick up some local stories. But what happens is it’s very easy to get frustrated because, I guarantee you, I cannot get the U.S. Supreme Court to rule the way I want them to on any case simply by calling them or lobbying them or anything else. All I can do is hope.Â
And I know justices of the Supreme Court, and I dined with them, and talked with them. We’ve discussed all sorts of stuff – that doesn’t matter. I can’t call them and get them to change their vote. And I have not figured out a way, yet, as many friends I have in the U.S. Senate, I can’t get Mitch McConnell to get stuff up for a vote. And we talked before, 700 measures passed in the U.S. House the Senate won’t even pick up.
When Something Passes In The House But Dies In The Senate
Rick:
It’s a lot of good stuff that passed in the House —
David:
A lot of good stuff, man, —
Rick:
— and just died over in the Senate.
David:
And as many as my contacts are in D.C., I can’t get Mitch McConnell do this thing and I can’t call the president and say, “Hey, do this.” It’s just — and so what do I do? And I’m really well-connected or at least most people would think so.Â
How Does The Average Person Get Something Done?
So what happens with average people that aren’t connected and there’s nothing they can do. And so, as a result, we listen in the news and we get frustrated. We get depressed, or we get excited, we get happy, and then we get mad because they’re not following through on these — whatever it is that”s there.
And I’ve got to go back to the American Revolution. When it came time to start winning the war, you look at the first four battles in the American Revolution: the Battle of Lexington, the Battle of Concord, The Battle of the Road to Boston, and the Battle of Bunker Hill. In those four big battles, nobody contacted the commander in chief and said, “George Washington, what do you want us to hear?” They all said, “Don’t worry about it, our community will take care of it.” And so Jonas Clark leads his 70 guys out and that”s Lexington, and Reverend William and Emerson leads his 300 guys out and that”s Concord. And we just go through the rest of it.
Everybody Takes Care of Their Own Local Area
And what you find is, that when everybody takes care of their own local area, then the whole nation gets healed. What happens is we win local battles, and that wins national battles. And that wins independence. But it’s not that we had this great strategic national plan – it’s that guys locally stood up.
And so that’s what you”ve got with the book of Nehemiah and that’s why we, like that story and that model, is all of you get involved in rebuilding right here right where you live. Do this stuff. Let”s get school boards, let’s get — let”s recruit people for school boards. Let’s get the mayor that understands stuff, lets —
National Day of Prayer
Rick:
Host a National Day of Prayer —
David:
That”s right.
Rick:
— there”s so much you can do.
David:
Yeah, that’s right – all these things. Let’s look at our local school, let’s start good news clubs in our schools. And by the way, let’s start Bible clubs in our schools, and while we’re at it, let’s get a release time program in our schools, and let’s also teach the Bible’s curriculum published.Â
Legal Actions We Can Take
All these things are completely legal to be done across the nation for the communities that decide they want to do them. And so that really is the key to this whole thing of turning it around. That’s why we like again the name WallBuilders of the book of Nehemiah is it is the story of the greatest, largest, grassroots effort in the Bible and it was successful because everybody got involved in doing something right where they lived. And that’s really the key to WallBuilders and what we try to get people to do.
Rick:
And it’s the key to culture change. It”s the key to actually winning the culture back in and turning the tide. So that also means that everybody listening right now, there’s something they can do. They don’t have to feel like it’s too big or there’s nothing I can do, I can’t make a difference.Â
If you ever catch that vision that it’s done at the local level and it’s the small things that add up. So many of us across the country, I believe we’re still the majority. Most people do still have the right, at least desire for God and country and the things that we believe in. But it’s got to start at that local level and people have got to be willing to take action.
Nehemiah And The People Built A Wall
David:
If you go back to the model of Nehemiah again what they needed most in Jerusalem to rebuild the walls were stonemasons. There’s no indication they had a single stonemason in all those that went back. Now they had perfume makers, and they had jewelers, and they had fine art craftsmen, and they had soldiers, and they had a man with a bunch of daughters, and they had a bunch of priests. Yeah, but what we need is masons. We don’t have masons, so let’s all do what we can do.
And so the story of the book of Nehemiah is a bunch of non-experts got in and did what they could and completely rebuilt the entire city in only 52 days when they all individually, and collectively, said, “This is an impossible task, we can’t do it. We don’t have the resources, we don’t have what we need. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let’s try anyway.”Â
No Need To Be Qualified
And that’s the other cool part about this is you don’t have to be qualified. You don’t have to have a huge following, you don’t have to have a great position of influence. All you gotta do is go. Do something.
You may not be a stonemason as they needed Jerusalem. That’s all right. You take what skill set you’ve got – a man and a bunch of daughters, go you guys, go out and lay stones. So we’ll just hope it looks good when you get done. And you’re a jeweler and you do silver and gold – you don’t do rock – no worries. You just do what you can.
And that’s really the kind of mentality that we need is, “I’m not an expert in this and I don’t have a fan page with 23 million or however many the presidents got now. I don’t have anything like that, but I’ve got a fan page with six friends and I can work with my six friends so we can get something done.”
Everybody’s Got a Realm of Influence
Rick:
Everybody’s got a realm of influence —
David:
Everybody.
Rick:
–no matter how big or small.
David:
That”s right – everybody does. Everybody does.
Rick:
Alright, quick break – we’ll be right back.
Again, Kirk Cameron joining us later in the program. By the way, you can get involved in your local community, actually join some other people in your community on a very special night, October 24th. Stay with us. We’ll be right back on WallBuilders Live.
Moment From American History
This is Tim Barton from WallBuilders with another moment from American history. Founding Fathers John Adams and Thomas Jefferson originally worked closely together but later became ardent opponents.
This troubled Dr. Benjamin Rush, a signer of the declaration, who knew both of them very well. In the Bible, Second Corinthians 5:18 tells us that God has given each of us the ministry of reconciliation. Dr. Rush believed this and set out to bring the two back together.
It took a while, but Adams and Jefferson once again became close friends. Looking back on his role in helping bring about this reconciliation Dr. Rush stated, “It will give me pleasure as long as I live to reflect that. I have been in any degree instrumental in effecting this reunion of two souls destined to be dear to each other and motivated with the same dispositions to serve their country, though in different ways.”
For more information about Dr. Benjamin Rush and his other remarkable achievements go to WallBuilders.com.
Grassroots Movements
Rick:
Welcome back! Thanks for staying with us here on Wall Builders Live. David, as we go to the break, you were saying everybody has a realm of influence and can do something and people might be listening and saying, “Yeah, but, my realm is too small, or whatever. It’s not going to make a difference.”
I don’t know how many times we’ve had stories on Good News Fridays where a small local church goes and takes over an entire school board, or somebody makes a difference in an election – a homeschool family gets involved in a campaign and helps get a state rep elected. I mean, it’s just story, after story, after story, where people made a difference with very little in terms of a realm of influence or even financial resources.
David:
You know, even that concept of, “Well, I can’t make a difference.”
How do you know? How can you pre-judge what’s going to happen? God didn’t ask you to make a difference, anyway. He just asked you to get out and do something.
Rick:
Yeah, do your duty regardless of whether you get the results.
Occupy Till I Come
David:
That’s right. His thing was, “Occupy till I come.” Â
He didn’t say, “Go turn 43 fold increase or go get two hundred eighty-four people led to the Lord.” He just said, “Occupy.  Go out and do business till I get there.”
And so all we’re responsible for is not whether we can make a vast difference. It”s whether we’re engaged, whether we’re involved, doing what we can do. Even if it’s just — you know, the priests, when they were building the walls of Jerusalem, they said the priest only rebuilt their own homes.
Well, the priest actually did the least of anyone there, but you know what?  That means – every one of those homes on the wall got rebuilt, which means a part of the wall got rebuilt. So even if you don’t think you have much influence, that”s alright. You take care of what you got, and you get involved, and you do what you can do. And don”t say, “Well, I can’t have an in–“ How do you know you can’t have an influence?
Rick:
Yeah.
1 Samuel 30 verse 6
David:
Even if you just influence yourself and you may have to do like David did in 1 Samuel 30 verse 6. David was out fighting the enemy, and while they were out the enemy came and ravaged his city and the city of all of his troops. And when they got back their wives and children were gone and their homes had been ravaged, and now everybody turns on David and they want to kill David.Â
Well, he’s the leader who’s led them to victory– how many times? They want to kill him. And he said there being no one to encourage him, David encouraged himself in the Lord. So all he took care of was just one. That’s all he did was just one. But then that got him jazzed and he went out and got the rest of them jazzed and led them to victory. And who knows what you can do —
Rick:
That”s right.
David:
And who knows who will respond to you. So don’t pre-judge what you can do. And Kirk’s a guy that when he went to Hollywood, I’ll just about guarantee he wasn’t thinking about changing the culture like he’s doing now whether it be from movies like Monumental to TV series, to the other movies he’s been in. To even now, just doing these one night events designed to really motivate people and get them back engaged again.
Rick:
And encourage – you used the word encourage —
David:
That”s right.
Rick:
That’s really what it’s about. It is encouraging each other in the Lord.
David:
And I don’t think that 15 years ago he was thinking this is what he’s going to do. But lo and behold, look at the influence he’s had. And not that we’re all Kirk Camerons, or want to be, nor are going to be. It doesn’t matter. He’s doing what he can do and that’s what every one of us need to do is what we can do.
Rick:
Yeah, it’s a great opportunity to be encouraged to actually be a part of this with Kirk. It’s called “Revive 2.” They did this last year. He’s going to tell us about it when we come back from the break.
Stay with us. Kirk Cameron – our special guest today on Wall Builders Live.
Avalon Project
Tim:
Hey, guys, this is Tim Barton with WallBuilders. I know you hear my dad and Rick talk a lot about our Founding Fathers about the original intent of our nation, a constitutional heritage that we have. And really we’ve seen how far we slipped away from that. And I know a lot of us as we hear my dad and Rick talk think, “I wish there was a place that I could go where I could see these documents and I could read and learn about the Founding Fathers firsthand. Â See the things they did.” Â
I want to give you some websites today that can help you accomplish that very thing. If you get online you can go to places like Library of Congress and you can look under their century of lawmaking or historical documents. You can go to the Avalon Project, to the Founders Constitution, Google Books, or even the internet archives. Â
Or you can just go to WallBuilders.com. We have a section for our WallBuilders Library. And under that section, we have different subgroups for historical documents, historical writings, even a place where you can get helpful links to find out more information about other websites. Â Where you can do research for yourself and find the truth for yourself. Friends, this is the time that we need to know who we are and where we came from. WallBuilders.com is a great place to go.
Revive Us 2
Rick:
Welcome back. Thanks for staying with us here on WallBuilders Live. Great to have Kirk Cameron back with us for Revive Us 2, second time around here. Kirk, good to have you back.
Kirk Cameron:
Hey, it’s great to talk to you again. And you know what, I just I keep working on talking faster so that I can keep up with your rhythm and your pace, but I can’t do it.
Rick:
You just expect me to come on as a Texan goin”, “Howdy, Kirk, glad to have you on the show,” and take a long time to get that out don’t you.
Kirk Cameron:
That”s — there you go. That”s I’m used to in the south.
Rick:
That’s right. Hey! Super excited that you’re doing another movie and it’s coming out here October 24th. Going to be in theaters all over the country. So you’ve really, I mean, you’ve taken this to heart. I mean, you want to revive the country and bring back these values that made our country great in the first place and just find ways to bring us together. Tell us about last time and then we’ll talk about what’s going to happen this time.
Bring The Country Back Together
Kirk Cameron:
Yes. You remember how you felt just before the presidential election. I mean we”re thinking, really? Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton -this is the choice that we have to make – how did we get here? And, you know, we held a national family meeting for the family of faith and said, “Church, what do we do? We need revival. We need God to tear open the heavens and do something.” And most Christians were feeling so discouraged that they weren”t even going to vote.
Rick:
Yeah.
Kirk Cameron:
And by the end of the night, after Ben Carson, Francis Channon, Eric Metaxas, and others spoke to us, millions of evangelicals and pro-life Catholics changed their mind and they went out to the voting booth and got involved because they felt, “If we don”t select our leaders, someone else will.” And we were just thrilled that so many believers put feet to their faith and decided to express their faith by going to the voting booth.
Christians Got Out To Vote
Rick:
That’s right.
Kirk Cameron:
It was awesome.
Rick:
And it has huge repercussions we’re still feeling that today. A great Supreme Court justice that we got, Neal Gorsuch, all kinds of additional appointments down the line. Mike Pence and some other godly men in great positions. So no question, I mean, it was huge. When we work the system, and we let our voice be heard, and use our — and our values be counted, it makes a big difference.
Kirk Cameron:
It really does, Rick. That’s why I appreciate you and the hard work that you’re doing. You’re not salt that stays in the salt shaker. You get out and you get into the culture to stop the corruption. That”s what salt does. Not to mention makes everything taste better.
Rick:
That’s good.
Kirk Cameron:
So, we as Christians need to keep doing that and that’s why I’m doing Revive Us 2. After the election, things didn”t really settle down. In fact, they seemed to get even more anxious —
Rick:
Yes, certainly more confrontational.
Kirk Cameron:
Man, it seems like we”re divided over everything – race, religion, politics, gender choice, family, money. And we need unity and a path to get there.
Rick:
Yeah.
Nation Divided
Kirk Cameron:
Especially within the church so that we can provide the ministry that America needs. We’re the ones who need to bring the nation together and begin solving the problems that we’re talking about on the news.
I mean come on, we have mass shootings, natural disasters, the NFL, and the flag – do I kneel, do I stand? Statues coming down, the threat of war with North Korea. How do we work together while we still have time?
That’s what Revive 2 is all about. Dr. Ben Carson is coming back this time, Ravi Zacharias, Joni Erickson Tada, filmmakers Alex and Stephen Kendrick. And we’re going to be live from the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C.
Rick:
Oh, wow.
Bring Healing And Hope To Our Nation
Kirk Cameron:
Broadcast to the nation at local theaters all over the country. And we’re going to worship and pray together and talk about bringing healing and hope to our divided nation.
Rick:
The group you’ve got — that you’re bringing together here we’re talking government officials, we’re talking theologians, movie makers, artists. These are people that are influencing the culture just like you said truly being salt, truly being light, in all these different areas of the culture. I’m assuming that’s what you were thinking when you put this group together that had to be some kind of design. You’re covering every area of the culture here.
Kirk Cameron:
I’m trying to. You know, Ravi Zacharias travels the world speaking to dignitaries on the subject of religion and philosophy of government. So he’s going to tackle religious divisions. We’ve got Ben Carson talking about the economy and poverty in our nation. We’ve got ** talking about racial reconciliation, and Alex and Stephen Kendrick talking about how to keep the family together. Because the strength of a nation comes from the strength in the home. And so we’re going to be worshipping with Zach Williams -he sings that great song, Chainbreaker and **–
Rick:
Oh yeah.
Kirk Cameron:
We”ve got a live Question and Answer session, so the audience gets to ask a panel of us questions that are on their mind. We’re going to give you more hope and more courage for the future in America than you ever thought possible.
Rick:
That’s great. That’s great. And this is — and people can participate by going and they can actually not just watch it online, they go to the theater – they can actually see this in theaters.
ReviveUs.com
Kirk Cameron:
Oh, man. This is not online. It’s in your movie theater. This is the same way you saw Revive Us 1  or a — it’s a live one night only event October 24. You got to get tickets. Take your church. Take your small group, your family, your friends, go to reviveus.com and get your tickets. That”s reviveus.com. You put in your zip code and your theater will show up on the screen.
Rick:
And this is not — I was just scrolling through, Kirk, while we’re talking. This is not like you got five choices around the country. There’s a ton of theaters in here all over the country that you’re participating.
Kirk Cameron:
800 – and most of them are in Texas.
*laughter*
Rick:
Oh, that will just cover Dallas/Fort Worth. What are you talking about?! No, 800 — so you’re in 800 theaters — man, that’s significant — all over the country.
Kirk Cameron:
Yes.
Rick:
Anybody listening right now can get on the website – reviveus.com. You click on the ticket button. It will list all that. You just type in your zip code like Kirk said or just scroll down find your state, but they’re all over the country. So I mean, this — were you able to measure in any way how many people participated with you last year.
160,000 Believers
Kirk Cameron:
Yes. A hundred and sixty thousand believers gathered for Revive Us last year.
Rick:
Wow.
Old Time Tent Revival In Theaters
Kirk Cameron:
We anticipate more this year. So what’s really cool about it. It’s like a giant tent revival and just like those old-time revivals. The community would come together and they”d worship and pray and call on the name the Lord together. Well, we’re doing that in 800 tents and they’re called movie theaters all over the country. It’s come together, and we’re going to have words on the screen, stand up, raise your hands, worship God and turn your theater into your church.
Rick:
That’s great. I love it. Fantastic. Alright, and you’ve got–once people get their tickets so they can buy those online, but then they show up at the theater just like you normally would. Then show your tickets at the door and go in.
Kirk Cameron:
Right. You’re going to buy your ticket throuFandangongo through Ticketmaster and you just go to reviveus.com. And you can click on the link right there and it will take you to Fandango and you going to buy a ticket, just like you do a movie. You’re going to show up, get your popcorn, and get ready to, you know, foot stomping and hand raisin,” prayer worship, and revive the nation meeting.
Rick:
It sounds, too, like a joyful approach. I mean, Kirk, you’re not a doomsday guy. You’re not one of these guys who runs around going, “It’s all over, forget it. We can’t do anything.”
You say, “Look, there are real challenges. No doubt about it. We’re facing some tough things in our country, but we’ve got such a great foundation and God is still moving, and there is a way for us as a country to come together.”
That’s what I like – it’s an optimistic approach.
Optimistic About America
Kirk Cameron:
Amen. Look, what we got Rick Green and WallBuilders, we’ve got Dr. Ben Carson in there. We’ve got Supreme Court justices. We’ve got good people and good things happening not just in America, but all around the world.Â
And I am so optimistic about the future because the gospel has history written all over it. I think all that needs to happen is people need to take this religion that they got in their head, let it move to the heart, and catch them on fire and start changing the world around them. That”s what Revive Us 2 is striving to do. So get the tickets and come on.
Rick:
Reviveus.com. Go to the website right now today, folks. Get your tickets it’s October 24th. One evening only so make sure you go. October 24th that evening. Get your tickets at reviveus.com. Kirk Cameron, always good to have you brother. Thanks for coming on.
Kirk Cameron:
Thank you, Rick. God bless you. Keep up the great work!
Rick:
Okay, we’re going to take a quick break. We’ll be right back on WallBuilders Live.
Bring A Speaker To Your Area
Tim:
Hey, this is Tim Barton with WallBuilders. Â And as you’ve had the opportunity to listen to WallBuilders Live, you’ve probably heard a wealth of information about our nation, about our spiritual heritage, about the religious liberties, and about all the things that make America exceptional.
And you might be thinking, “As incredible as this information is, I wish there was a way that I could get one of the WallBuilders guys to come to my area and share with my group.”
Whether it be a church, whether it be a Christian school, or public school, or some political event, or activity, if you’re interested in having a WallBuilders speaker come to your area, you can get on our website at www.WallBuilders.com and there’s a tab for scheduling. If you”ll click on that tab, you’ll notice there’s a list of information from speakers bio’s, to events that are already going on. And there’s a section where you can request an event, to bring this information about who we are, where we came from, our religious liberties, and freedoms. Go to the WallBuilders website and Bring a speaker to your area.
Taking An Optimistic Approach
Rick:
Welcome back Thanks for saying with us on WallBuilders Live. Thanks to Kirk for joining us today as well. Encourage everybody to check out that website as well. We have a link to that website at our website today and you get tickets and join Kirk on October 24th. From all over the country – it”ll be a great night of encouragement. Hoping to take my family to a local theater here in Austin, Texas and I hope you’ll do the same.
Rebuild One Bite At A Time
Looking around the country, David, what a great chance to be encouragers of others and that optimistic approach, man. I told Kirk I liked that about him and the way he was doing it. That’s what drew me to you as well it wasn’t a — when you would cover things in history or in the country it wasn’t a doomsday approach of, “Look at all the bad,” it was, “Hey, we’ve got challenges, but God has given us the land.” Even that Nehemiah approach that you were talking about – let’s go rebuild, we can do this thing if we take it one bite at a time.
David:
We can. And the other thing is, it”s always good as the Bible says, to encourage one another. And that’s what events like this do because you’re going to get a dose of encouragement. You’re going to hear from people who have been in the fight, who are still in the fight, who are going to be in the fight, and be encouraged. And then you can share that encouragement with others. You”ll look around the theater and you’ll see people you didn’t know and people you do know and it is just a good way to be encouraged and to encourage one another.
And that really is what it’s all about, because if you ever get down and depressed, you’ll find that you stop doing things and when you stop doing things, then that is the problem.
Rick:
Absolutely. It’s a whole — I love the Bible verse in Isaiah where God says, “As you go, you will hear a voice behind you saying this is the way walk you in it.” He”s not talking to you when you’re standing still. When you’re moving, and when you’re going, and when you’re doing something is when God can lead you and direct you.
David:
You know, I’m a cowboy. I can’t guide a horse that won’t move, but if I can get that horse moving, I can guide it. I can turn it in circles, I can back it up, I can turn left, right, I can do all sorts of stuff. But not until it’s doing something.
And that really is what God needs out of all of us and that’s why this kind of encouragement is so good because it will keep us from coming to a dead halt and saying, “I can’t do anything. I can’t make a difference.” No, you can and it doesn’t matter whether you think you can or not. God still told you to be involved till He gets back and that’s the thing every one of us needs to do. But it’s a whole lot easier when you get encouraged over things as well.
Revive Us 2Â – Go See It
Rick:
