Rick:

Welcome to the intersection of faith and the culture. It’s WallBuilders Live and we’re talking about today’s hottest topics on policy, faith and the culture, always looking at it from a biblical, historical and constitutional perspective. It’s Good News Friday, so we’re going to be bringing you some good news throughout the program.

Today, you can get more of that at our website, wallbuilderslive.com. Now, that’s our radio site, so that’s the place to go for archives of the program over the last few weeks. You can also learn a little bit about the constitution and quarantines right there at wallbuilderslive.com. Click on that video link and it’ll take you to a series of those. And that’ll also give you a chance at constitutioncoach.com to sign up as a host and start hosting classes to help save our Constitution. Folks, we’re not just defending the Constitution anymore, we’re not just educating about it, we’re literally fighting for the life of the Constitution right now.

Last weekend, I went up to Chicago and stood with those Romanian pastors that have been harassed by the mayor there in Chicago and the governor and just all these efforts to prevent them from gathering together. And it was just a great reminder that the First Amendment is no good if we’re not actually living it out. I mean, what good is the freedom of religion if we’re not living out our faith? We stood Monday, there in downtown Chicago, literally violating with some civil disobedience, violating the social distancing and the gathering of more than 10 to honor our fallen, to honor those who came before us, to honor those who paid the ultimate price, who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and to recommit ourselves to live out those freedoms as a way of honoring those who came before. So, be a part of that.

You can do that at constitutioncoach.com. You can do it at wallbuilderslive.com by making a contribution. That’s one way to help extend this message, to get it out to more people. Make that contribution at wallbuilderslive.com.

But let’s get into some good news. We’re here with David Barton. He’s America’s premier historian and our founder at WallBuilders. Tim Barton is a national speaker and pastor and president of WallBuilders. And my name is Rick Green, I’m a former Texas legislator and America’s Constitution coach. Looking forward to our Good News Friday today. Alright, David, what’s our first piece of good news for today?

David:

Okay, guys, we’re going to go to some, I guess, you would say these are famous personalities or maybe recognizable personalities. But I’m going to start with the Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. He was recently speaking at Hillsdale College at the dedication of the new chapter.

Tim:

And by the way, Clarence Thomas is the one that there is a new video about him and his biography and Rick has been telling us how much we have to see this, how incredible it is. And so, Clarence Thomas has a pretty interesting testimony in and of himself. And actually, so we had this interview on WallBuilders Live not too long ago covering some of that. Anyway, not to interrupt, but just remember Clarence Thomas.

David:

And that movie now, I guess, really documents his faith, but it was really on display when he was there speaking at Hillsdale. And again, they’re dedicated to Chapel Hill Stoke college and it was Christ chapel. And so, he started giving his testimony which is really pretty cool. Let me just read some of the things he said. He said, “Not long after I joined President Reagan’s administration, I was in the midst of one of the darkest periods of my life. I was in my 30s, running a federal agency under significant public scrutiny and criticism. I had little money. I was raising my young sons and I was grieving the loss of the two most important people in my life, my grandparents.”

He continues. He says, “I was able to elevate my thoughts beyond my circumstances and self-absorption and I set my mind on things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth as Paul wrote in the letter to the Colossians”. Which is Colossians 3:2, “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” He continued to say, “God use those times of prayer and meditation to rekindle the flame of faith in my life. I am a changed man today and God began that transformation in a holy place, a sanctuary much like this chapel, where I could temporarily leave behind the onslaught of life’s difficulties and bring my troubles before the Lord.” It’s interesting what he said about the chapel. After he gave his testimony, he then during the chapel, he said, “This new chapel affirms with the writer of Proverbs, that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” He said, “A correct understanding of the nature of God and of the human person is critical to preserving the liberty that we enjoy so much.”

That’s great. I mean, you got a Supreme Court Justice, outspoken about how the Lord transformed him. He’s openly quoting scriptures, quoting by memory Colossians and quoting by memory, Proverbs. And it’s just so good to see someone with that knowledge of the Bible on evidence and not ashamed to share that with students of the university.

Tim:

You know, our friend over it at First Liberty have had an opportunity on almost a yearly basis to be able to take some students to meet Justice Clarence Thomas and is something Keller Shackleford has talked about how incredible, hearing his testimony is and he talks about what God has done in his life. And so, certainly even now, being at Hillsdale which is a university that they’re very proud to say, they wouldn’t be constitutional.

And one of the things that sometimes Hillsdale doesn’t always promote as strongly is faith. You know, they sometimes have a little more libertarian bent to some of their teaching. That doesn’t mean there’s not great people or professors there. I don’t mean to imply that necessarily. But we certainly have known a lot of students up there. We know a lot of people around Hillsdale and this is something that you don’t always get a strong message of. And so, for Hillsdale to invite Justice Thomas in and for him to even get into some faith is pretty fun.

David:

It is and Justice Thomas, been privileged to know Justice Thomas and his wife, Jenny. And she came out of the New Age kind of stuff. And they really do have a ministry reaching people with a story of Jesus that are in New Age and other kinds of things. So, it’s interesting that his faith is not only so strong that he lives it and knows it, but they actually share it with others. And that’s really refreshing for public figures to do that.

As a matter of fact, I was struck with an article I saw on British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Now, I know more because of Brexit and he’s in the news because of Brexit. And, you know, they keep saying he’s Great Britain’s version of Donald Trump. He wants to make Great Britain great again, which Britain could sure use that they fall into so many areas what they have been in previous decades. So, he’s trying to get them back as an independent sovereign nation.

And it is interesting what he openly said about Christians. I thought, here’s another bold guy. He says, I want us to remember those Christians around the world who are facing persecution. He says, for many of them, it’s going to be marked in secret, even in a prison cell. He talked about Jesus Christ, the importance of that and he talked about how he is going to defend the Christian faith against whatever evil comes against it. He said, we stand with Christians everywhere in solidarity and we will defend your right to practice your faith.

And so, here’s a commitment of… And you don’t get many national leaders who pledged the selves to stand with persecuted Christians. I mean, that’s something you can’t expect from churches or pastors or Christians, but to find a national leader stand up and publicly talk about Jesus Christ and we’re going to stand with persecuted Christians across the world, that was really refreshing to see.

So, you got Justice Thomas and you got Prime Minister Yeltsin and there’s just several good examples of national leader starting to come out publicly with their faith and it’s a refreshing thing and this is good news to see.

Rick:

Alright, folks, we got to take a quick break. We’ll be right back with more good news in just a moment. You’re listening to WallBuilders Live.

BREAK

Many of you out there are under stay-at-home orders by your governor or your local health officials and maybe you’re looking for something to do during this time. One of the most important things you can do as a citizen is to make sure that you know your rights, you know when they’ve been violated and you’re the better prepared to defend and assert them. To do that, you’ve got to study the Constitution and the history behind it.

Constitution Alive with David Barton and Rick Green does exactly that. We take you into the WallBuilders library, we bring all those resources to life. And then we go out to Philadelphia, the Independence Hall and right there in the room where the Constitution and the Declaration were put together, we bring it to life, we relive it and we make sure that we as citizens know what our part is in preserving these freedoms for future generations.

At this time in our nation, it is so important to know the proper role of government and what we as citizens should be doing at this time. If you haven’t done Constitution Alive, check it out at wallbuilders.com. You can get the DVD set there, we’ll get it out in the mail to you as soon as we can. And you can study it at home or you can go to constitutioncoach.com and become a Constitution coach today. We’ve got a free license for you right now where you can sign up as a Constitution host and be the catalyst in your community to bring back these biblical and historical and constitutional values.

And what you do is you sign up as a host and then you get your friends and family together on Zoom. We coach you on how to do it and you’re able to create community and also study the Constitution at the same time. Do this and we will be able to pick up the pieces on the other side of this crisis and rebuild our nation even stronger than it was before. Check it out today at constitutioncoach.com.

Rick:

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live. It’s Good News Friday today, so we’re bringing you good news from around the nation, sometimes around the world. And Tim Barton has our next piece of good news. Tim?

Tim:

Alright, guys, this one is from Texas and it’s from the City of Lindale, which is not really a big city in Texas. But Lindale, earlier this year, I think was just a month or so ago, their city came out and they did a prolife, they approved a prolife resolution, declaring their city to be a Sanctuary City and protecting human life, saying that human life begins at conception.

Now, they are one of many Texas cities that have come out and said that they want to be a Sanctuary City for the unborn. Certainly, Sanctuary Cities reached notoriety several years ago, when you had cities, notably California, but then several other states have joined in this as well. And not even just States, but certain cities in certain States, where mayor said our city will be a sanctuary city and specifically referring to illegal immigrants, immigrants that have come into America for whatever reason, for whatever purpose for whatever ends, but illegally and many of them have committed crimes and they’re not allowed to be detained, they’re not allowed to be deported, at least the city will not help in that process and often hinders that process. Because they will arrest somebody that has done something wrong and instead of holding them until ICE comes or Homeland Security, whoever else comes to take them into custody and logically and probably largely deport them. Then some of these cities, they just release them back into the streets.

And so, you have some very violent offenders who have been released in the streets in these Sanctuary Cities. So, Sanctuary Cities have been very bad when it came to the Sanctuary Cities for illegal immigrants.

But there were some people who thought, you know what, if we’re going to Sanctuary Cities and protect something, let’s protect one of the most valuable and sacred things there is, let’s protect life. So, you had cities coming out saying we want to be Sanctuary Cities.  Well, in Lindale, which I believe is out by Tyler, somewhere in that region, East Texas.

David:

Yeah, it’s in East Texas and really, it used to be the home of YWAM, Youth With A Mission. And so, Lindale was really, there were a lot of Christian musicians back in the 70s and 80s. There was a huge Christian community.

Tim:

Well, so this is where YWAM was founded, is not surprising. There were a lot of very active and vocal citizens. And so, they had a City Council meeting and in the City Council meeting, they were all kinds of prolife, advocates who were there and members have different Rights to Life groups who were there, directors of Rights to Life groups and they were giving testimony. The reason was, the City Council was going to vote on an ordinance to say, abortion, we’re going to make it illegal; in our city, we’re a sanctuary city. And what happened is the city attorney said, Guys, I don’t think we can defend an ordinance, because ordinance means it’s a law.

David:

An ordinance is a city law. It is a law, but it’s a law for the State.

Tim:

Right. And so, he said, I don’t think we should do a law because that can be challenged, it might be rule is unconstitutional, that could cost us a lot of money. Let’s just do a resolution, because that says what we feel, what we think, what we want, but then we can’t really be sued for resolution. So, the people were not very happy that it was changed to a resolution.

There was a city councilman who was in favor of doing an ordinance, making it a city law, city policy. And there certainly were some things that some of the prolife advocates were supporting and championing that could have been a challenge in a legal standing. They wanted to retroactively be able to, if Roe versus Wade it’s ever returned, they wouldn’t be able to go back and find anybody was ever part of the abortion industry no matter how long ago it was. And so, you know, I could see the city attorney going, yeah, some of those are not, that’s not going to go very well.

David:

And by the way, in the Constitution, that’s called an ex post facto law: you can’t make something a crime after the fact. So that would be not only a problem, that would be absolutely unconstitutional to do.

Tim:

But one of the things I so appreciate about this article, it says the Lindale City Council passed the resolution after local residents urged them to pass stronger prolife ordinances declaring their city to be a sanctuary for the unborn. So, not only is it great that you have a city who is in this case, at least passing a resolution. There are other cities who have done ordinances. In fact, in this article, it lists cities such as [inaudible 13:22], also in East Texas, Big Springs, Rusk, Wasco, Naples, Waskom, Tenaha, Gilmer Westbrook, several cities in Texas who have done things, even pass ordinances.

But why I thought this was so cool is the reason the City Council did something, this article says, is local residents urge them to do something. And this is where I would encourage, right every listener, we say, hey, get involved locally where you are, you can make a difference. And it’s easier to solve things the local level than trying to get a state issue done or a national federal issue done. Right? It’s easier to deal with City Council, because generally, it’s only a couple hundred votes to get a state City Councilman elected or in some cases removed. And so, you can have a major influence on the local level. And this is local residents, local Christians, prolife advocates who said, hey, we want our city to go on record as being a prolife city. And so, this is to me, not only good news the city did something, but that local residents got involved and encouraged their city to do something significant and they did.

Rick:

Alright, David, Tim, quick break. We’re going to take a quick break, we’ll be right back. It is Good News Friday and I know we can never get to all the stories that you got in your stacks. Rick:

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live on this Good News Friday. You can find more good news on our website wallbuilderslive.com. But right now, our next piece of good news is coming from David.

David:

Okay guys, I’m going to go to a policy that’s been handed down by the Trump administration and it deals with whether you’re an able-bodied citizen. Now, able-bodied in this context refers to welfare, because food stamps are available for those who need it, who have poverty, who have trouble getting food and income, etc. Except under the Obama administration, they made food stamps universally accessible to anybody. We talked to principals of schools and now the school lunch program, anybody can be part of the school lunch program, you get a free lunch, even if your parents make $40 million a week, you still get free school lunch. I mean, it’s crazy, because those were all instituted, I think back under President Truman, maybe to help those who are really poor and really needy. And so, it’s always been this thing of those who really need the safety net, not everybody. But it’s been expanded and welfare has gone wider and wider.

And so, food stamps are out there and they now are available for tens of millions of people. And there used to be a requirement that said the only way you get food stamps is if you can show and demonstrate that you’ve been out applying for jobs and haven’t been able to get one. So, if you’re able-bodied and you can work and you’re not working but you’re able to work, we’re not going to give you welfare if you’re not even trying. I mean, this is not just a free ride. But that was changed under the Obama administration. Well, President Trump has now come out and said, no, no, we’re going back to able-bodied. And this is a biblical principle by the way, Second Thessalonians 3:10 says, if you won’t work, you don’t eat. And that’s just real simple. You got to give us some effort.

And so, they have now reinstituted the able-bodied requirement, that if you’re able-bodied and you’re not trying to get a job, you’re off food stamps. Now, this affects millions of folks who have been getting a free ride. It is saving the federal government about $5.5 billion, which is nice to start saving some money rather than spending money. We’re so far in debt. You have to make cuts at various places. But we’ve been given this money out without almost no strings attached and you just get all this this this free meal kind of stuff.

Now, here’s what really struck me. Because knowing how, I guess tender hearted America is, we want to help the needy, we want to help those who need help we, you know, we’re benevolent nation, we give to all sorts of stuff, our support of charities unrivaled when you look across the world, we really do well in emptying our pockets for those who have made. And by the way, if somebody across the world is in trouble, we’ll go to other nations and help those in trouble.

So, we have this real tender streak in our heart for those who really have needs. Here’s what struck me as interesting. Do you know what percentage of the nation supports this able-bodied requirement? Now, I would thought, you know, it’s more partisans kind of divide on Democrat, Republican…

Tim:

But you know, one of the things we’ve seen under Trump is that there’s a lot of blue collar Democrats who have kind of voted party lines but don’t always agree with those policies. So, it would not surprise me to see higher numbers. I would even guess probably in the 60 or 70%, maybe that would support this.

David:

Well, statistics are over 90% of the public agrees that able-bodied adults who receive cash, food, housing and medical assistance should be required to work or prepare for work as a condition of receiving governments.

Tim:

So, you’re saying I’m right, because I said over 60 or 70? So, I was totally right. 90+%

David:

90+%. I mean, that even means the people who believe in socialism. Because you got, you know, arguably 40% of the nation says they want socialism, that means that even three-fourths of the socialists or those who support socialism are wanting able-bodied people to work.

Tim:

Which is only explaining to us that they’re very confused about what socialism is.

David:

That’s right. That’s right.

Tim:

Right? Because if you think people should work for a living and you’re a socialist, you’ve confused socialists. That you don’t actually support socialism, you should look it up, do a little research. You’re not a socialist. You’re actually closer to a capitalist if you believe people should work for a living.

David:

Well, in maybe one of the greatest ironies of this whole story is Trump says you have to work to get welfare. Okay? So, Democrat Congresswoman, Marcia Fudge of Ohio, comes out attacking Trump for this new policy. Now, this is her quote. She calls it, “An unacceptable escalation of the administration’s war on working families.” Wait a minute. This is war against those who aren’t working. This is not a war of working families. Is turning you into a working family, to take away government benefits from those who are not working, she says it’s a war on working families. That is one of the greatest ironies I’ve heard in a long time. Only that could come out of Washington DC with people who she’s got to be clearly in that 10%. But to find 90% of the nation supports these positions that Trump has taken, that’s really good.

Rick:

Alright fellows, last break for the day. When we’ll come back, Tim is going to wrap us up with some good news. So, stay with us, you’re listening to WallBuilders Live.

BREAK

The Founding Fathers of America made a habit of reading through the Bible once a year. There’s no better source of wisdom and it is applicable to every issue in our lives. What a great time for us as American citizens to take this time. If you’ve got extra time at home now, if you’re quarantined at home and you’re looking for something to do, what better thing could there be to do than to read through the Bible, maybe for the first time in your life?

I tried to make this a habit several years ago and I had a new tool to start doing that with and it was called the Founders’ Bible. It gave me a chance not only to read through the Bible once a year, but also to learn history while I was doing that. And what I love about the Founders’ Bible is that as I’m reading that Scripture, then all of a sudden, there’ll be an article inserted right there by that Scripture about what the Founding Fathers learned from that specific verse or chapter and how they applied it to launch our new. It’s a really fun way to learn. It’s incredibly empowering and it has answers for today. The Bible is full of all the right answers for today, in fact, it’s the only source that has all the right answers.

So, if you haven’t read through the Founders’ Bible, I challenge you and encourage you, get a copy of the Founders’ Bible today, it’s available at wallbuilders.com. And we even have a digital version, so you can do this on your phone or iPad or computer. Check out the Founders’ Bible today, make it a part of your regular reading throughout the year. But right now is a great opportunity to redo the Founders’ Bible. Check it out today at WallBuilders.com.

Rick:

We’re back here on WallBuilders Live, thanks for staying with us for our final segment of good news on this Good News Friday. I know it’s not enough, so you want more good news, go to our website, wallbuilderslive.com. Tim, take us home with some more good news.

Tim:

Alright, guys. Last one, real quick. I’ve got two, I’m afraid I’m only going to get one in, but we’re going to try. So, the first one is the article, says President Trump announces advisory board to expose research using aborted baby parts. We’ve actually had people on the program before talking about how one of the things that has happened and there have been videos exposing some of this. Where members from Planned Parenthood and other abortion industry providers have sold baby parts to different research facilities. And so, one of the things that’s known is yes, research facilities do use parts from aborted babies from dismemberment abortions, partial birth abortions, etc. they take those parts and they use that human tissue for research.

And President Trump has now commissioned ethics board to look into the use of aborted baby body parts in government funded research. The National Institute of Health Human Fetal Tissue Research Ethics Advisory Board, that’s a really big mouthful. But they’re to look into ending the unethical practice of using aborted baby parts and taxpayer funded scientific research. The US Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar is overseeing the creation of the board. And so, there’s 15 non-governmental agencies that are going to be part of this. It’s going to include doctors, scientists, ethicists, attorneys, theologians, but they’re specifically looking into the practice of research being done using parts from aborted babies instead of recognizing that there’s other ways that are more ethical to conduct research.

So, they’re going to do research. They’re going to provide their recommendations based on what they find in their research. But it’s just really remarkable that as long as this research has been going on, we’ve not had a president step forward and say, hey, we should do something different, we should not allow this to continue. And now you have President Trump, who again, a lot of people can point to a lot of things and criticize President Trump for, there are some things he’s done a really good job on, religious liberty, the right to life, some things, his relationship, friendship with Israel, supporting Israel, he’s done a really good job at some issues.

And this is one that is so fascinating, that most Americans are not aware of what happens with the tissue and, right, really, it’s the body of this baby after this baby has been aborted. And there’s been cases where some abortion providers died and they have found all kinds of aborted babies in bags and freezers and these abortion providers houses and homes, I mean just graphic terrible things. And it’s time somebody started looking into this and saying, we need to be more ethical, this is not right, we shouldn’t be doing it. And so, lo and behold, thank you, God that President Trump is saying we’re going to do something, we’re going to look into this, we’re not going to let this continue. So now, there is a board created to investigate this, to make recommendations. So that’s really good news.

Rick:
