Welcome to the intersection of faith and the culture. This is WallBuilders Live! Where we”€™re talking about today”€™s hottest topics on policy, faith, and the culture. Always doing that from a biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective.

We’re here with David Barton, America’s premier historian and the founder of WallBuilders. Also, Tim Barton is with us, national speaker and pastor, and president of WallBuilders. My name is Rick Green, I’m a former Texas legislator, national speaker.

Later in the program we”€™ve got Mat Staver with us from Liberty Counsel. Going to be talking today about what is, frankly guys, a very hot topic and that is education and the things that are being done in our schools to indoctrinate young people to a leftist philosophy. Specifically today with sexuality. I think people are going to be a little bit shocked at what’s actually being taught by the schools. Not just some-cover an article of maybe what’s in the news. The schools are actually pushing this information and this philosophy on our kids and parents have got to stand up and pay attention.

David:

Well, we’re going to get into that issue, but there’s a bigger issue here. And it has started to take shape in a way that kind of surprises a lot of folks. And the issue is – who’s responsible for your children? Who’s in charge of your children? Now, I think most of our listeners would say, “€œWell, parents. That’s a stupid question.”€ Well, it’s a stupid question to that group. But there is a growing group in America that says, “€œNo, no, no, no. Parents don’t know what these kids need. We know. We”€™re the educators, we”€™re the political leaders, we”€™re the ones who know what they need.”€

Becoming More Like Europe

David:

We”€™re becoming, in that sense, more and more like Europe. And if people don’t really understand what that is I’ll point out to you that just a couple of years ago in Europe, few years ago, however long it was, they had this big fiasco over a family there who wanted to homeschool their children because they didn’t like what the schools were teaching. And the government said, “€œThere’s no way.”€ And the parents went to jail for trying to homeschool the children because the children belong to the state. The children– the state”€™s responsible for what they get.

We’ve had people in the program who told us that over in Scotland that from the time a child is born in Scotland the government officials come to the hospital, and sign that child up, and the government officials then make the major decisions for that child because the child belongs to the state.

So, it’s– in America, we’ve always had this traditional position that, no, children belong to the parents. And so we have something called parental rights. But the more sec– and that, by the way, is a very biblical concept. But the more secular we have become, the more progressive we”€™ve become, the more like Europe we’re trying to become, the less rights parents have. And that is now manifesting itself in education in such a way that it shocks parents, but it shouldn’t.

This has been growing for a number of years. It”€™s now manifesting itself in a way that seems reprehensible to many, but it shouldn’t be a surprise. But it should be a wakeup call that just because we in our little groups tell each other that parents are in charge the kids, that doesn’t mean that’s what a whole lot of Americans believe. Especially those who have a lot of power and a lot ability to shape our kids. And so that really is the question that needs to be asked.

Mat Staver is going to give us a great example. But ask yourself – this stuff Mat”€™s talking about, why is it going on? And the answer is because the school believes that they are in charge that the kids, they’re in charge of making sure they get information that parents won’t give them. So, that’s the school’s role and task. And when the parents want to see the information they’re not going to let the parents see it because that’s not the business of the parents – that”€™s the business of the schools to teach the kids.

This Should Be a Wake Up Call

David:

So, that’s the idea to keep under thinking, undermine, as Mat goes through this. And, of course, we have Mat on fairly regularly. He was the founding dean of Liberty Law School and now runs Liberty Council which is such a terrific legal group. He just has so many examples of what’s starting to happen in America. This should be a wake up call to everybody.

Rick:

Well, it’s important what you”€™ve laid out there, David, because that basic philosophy, that elitist philosophy, that the state should raise the kids, not the parents. It’s actually a Marxist philosophy. And some people when you say it’s Marxist they think you’re just trying to rattle cages and shock people. But no, that’s literally what Marx wanted. It was a big part of the whole communist idea was to make sure that the state made the decisions – not parents. Because parents weren’t smart enough to make those decisions.

That’s what’s at play here and it’s not an isolated incident. We’re going to hear a couple of examples from Mat. It’s happening all over the country. We need to be paying attention and we need to be pushing back on it. Stay with us. Mat Staver, our special guest today on WallBuilders Live.

Moment From American History

This is Tim Barton from WallBuilders with another moment from American history.

The Reverend James Caldwell was a famous minister during the American War for Independence. His sermons taught liberty and God’s opposition to tyranny.

The British hated him and tried to kill him. So for his own protection he would actually take loaded pistols with him into the pulpit and lay them beside his Bible as he preached. In the 1780 Battle of Springfield, the Americans ran out of wadding for their guns which was like having no ammunition.

Pastor Caldwell ran inside a nearby church and returned with an armload of Watt Hymnals, the pages of which would provide the much needed wadding. He took this great Bible based hymnal, raised in the air, and shouted to the troops,”€Now put to watts into them, boys!”€  This pastor’s ingenuity saved the day for the Americans.

LC.org. And folks, get on that email list, make sure you’re following these cases and supporting financially. These guys do fantastic work. Mat, we”€™ve got we got one out of Fairfax Virginia. I guess, biology just doesn’t matter anymore.

Biology Doesn”€™t Mater Anymore?

Mat:

It’s unbelievable, they’re no longer going to teach biological sex. And they’re going to suggest that your gender “€œassigned at birth”€ may not be your gender. You can choose whether you’re male, female, a combination of both, or neither, believe it or not. That’s what they’re going to teach in the Fairfax County School District in Northern Virginia. Plus so many other shocking things that are part of this new curriculum.

Rick:

And this is not even– it’s not a kid coming and saying, “€œHey, I’m thinking weird things or whatever.”€ This is they’re actually indoctrinating them from the beginning, they’re planting the seeds in the kids.

Mat Staver:

Yeah, they’re planting the seeds in the kids. And a matter of fact, they’re also going to teach high schoolers about the homosexual daily pill – called PREP that is supposedly recommended for a high risk behavior of condomless sex with multiple partners of unknown HIV status. There’s a 10 percent failure rate. Even the AIDS organizations are saying, they are warning against it. They’re saying that because of the failure rate, don’t do this.

And yet, the school is going to teach these kids you can take this drug, you can do it on a daily basis, and you can have sex with multiple partners without any protection, and don’t worry about it because you need to do this. It’s not only dealing with people who have confusion, it’s causing confusion. It’s initiating, it’s indoctrinating it, it’s encouraging these kids to engage in very risky and, frankly, sometimes deadly activity.

Rick:

And, Mat, this is not an isolated event, right? This is happening with other school districts. In fact, you guys have a demand letter out to a school district dealing with a somewhat similar where they”€™re, again, indoctrinating with a radical agenda.

Not Only Indoctrination

Mat Staver:

Yeah, this is over in Pennsylvania. And it’s the East Penn school district there where the high school, * high school, had five days of indoctrination. And in fact, in this particular school what they did was every morning Monday through Thursday on the closed circuit TV for about almost 3000 children, they had these videos. The first day on Monday was nine questions gay people have about straight people – and it is derogatory. Day two – a CBS News story promoting clips of gender fluidity, day three – promoting same sex marriage, day four – promoting pride in coming out as homosexual. And then day five, the principal gets on the closed circuit communication and begins the LGBT indoctrination. They have become an arm of the LGBT agenda. Particularly of GLSEN that is attempting to indoctrinate children as young as kindergarten.

Rick:

And these are– they’re showing these videos to what age kids?

Mat Staver:

These are age kids throughout the high school. They’re showing them on a daily basis. It’s part of this so-called day of silence. In fact, GLSEN, the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network, promotes all over the country in these public schools. But this school turned it into a week propaganda where these young people were forced to watch these videos. And then when they came home telling their parents that they were disturbed, they felt that they were bullied by the school, indoctrinated by the school, the parents asked for the links to these videos that they showed and the school now is saying, “€œNo, you have no right to know what we showed your children. We”€™re involved. We’re going to make sure that they get this information.”€ But it is, frankly, shocking and it’s disturbing in so many fronts.

Rick:

Wait, so they”€™re not only– not only are they doing this indoctrination, when the parents want to know what they’re putting in front of their kids they’re not even giving the parents the information.

Attacking At a Vulnerable Age

Mat Staver:

That’s right. They’re saying, “€œWell, it’s part of the organization the Gay Straight Alliance Students and, therefore, we can’t give it out to you.”€ Well, no, this was a YouTube that they put links on and they showed them. And even their own policies, number one, say that they have to have prior permission from the parents whenever they show something like this. And number two, even if it was created by a student group, which it wasn’t. These were professionally done. Even if it was, however, created by a student group, whenever you use the school resources it becomes the property of everybody. Public records requests require public entities give information when requested, they’re refusing to give the parents the information that they indoctrinated the children with. We’re going to make sure that they get this information and not only get it, stop this indoctrination in the future.

Rick:

And, Mat, just to put this in context for, especially for parents out there. To put this kind of information in front of 14, 15, 16, year olds when they”€™re, man, really trying to figure out life, and figure out biology, and all of those things, at a very vulnerable age, let”€™s put it that way. And unfortunately, in a lot of homes and families at an age where they’re not willing to talk to mom and dad about this. So, they’re getting indoctrinated with this stuff and that’s why the left is picking off so many kids and moving them into this lifestyle. This is a major–

Mat Staver:

That”€™s why the Center for Disease Control in this annual survey of youth shows that there’s an increase in homosexuality and bisexuality among our nation’s youth. It’s not because of genetics, it’s because of the public school indoctrination. It’s because of this pressure that they’re undergoing. And in fact, in one of these videos it shows people so-called coming out and their parents just being so happy and so proud of them. It’s encouraging people to engage in the homosexual lifestyle.

Your Rights As a Citizen – Not Just For Parents

Rick:

Action steps, Mat. For folks maybe not in these school districts, but– and frankly, the more of this stuff the more I wonder if some folks had it right a few years ago- we need an exodus from the public school. I can’t imagine put my kid in this situation at this point. But for those that are in that situation and either didn’t know this was going on, or are they just don’t have another choice, or whatever. What are some things they can do? Can they go to the school and say, “€œHey, I want to know about any curriculum you’re teaching on sexuality.”€?

Mat Staver:

Yeah. First I think we do need an exodus from the public school. But there are always going to be the public schools, so find out, even if you don’t have children in the public schools, what they’re teaching. You’re a taxpayer you have a right to be able to know. Find out from their curriculum, ask questions, do letters asking for public records. You have a right as a citizen to know what’s going on. Don’t assume that your school is not involved. I can tell you this is widespread. It’s in both the urban areas as well as the rural areas. It will shock you, probably surprise you, it will anger you when you find out. But when you find out, make a difference, get involved, and tell your schoolboard to stop indoctrinating the children.

Rick:

That is a great point – you don’t have to have kids in the school district, you”€™re taxpayer. There’s another whole other program – we’re paying for this stuff. This isn’t just happening, it’s not just bad for the culture, we’re paying for it. So even–

Mat Staver:

Yeah, that”€™s taxpayer dollars that are paying the salaries, and the buildings, and everything, the operation of these schools. So, you have just as much a right to find out what’s going on in these schools, what is being taught to the children, as anyone who has children in those schools. Find out what’s going on. Don’t assume all is good and all is oaky. Many times it’s not. You’ll be surprised when you do some research.

How This Effects Everyone

Rick:

Is it fair to say we’d be short sighted and maybe even foolish to say, This wouldn’t affect me.”€? If I’m a homeschool or a private school parent, I don’t have to worry about this kind of thing. If 80 percent of the kids are still being taught in public school this is going to impact me. This is going to impact my family, my church, my community, my backyard, right?

Mat Staver:

Hey, it does affect everyone. For example, even if you’re homeschooling I certainly applaud you and hope more people do that. Guess who your children are communicating with when they’re * school? They’re communicating with, their socializing with, other people, oftentimes from the secular schools that are being indoctrinated by this.

And even if they weren’t, these are our future leaders and we need to be concerned about how these schools are literally brainwashing our youth and attempting to take them and capture the future with a very radical, frankly, dangerous, anti-God agenda. So, be involved, make sure you know what’s going on, and act on it.

Rick:

We’re back with David and Tim Barton. And, guys, these are extreme examples one might think, but they’re actually average examples. It’s the exact same thing happening in school district after school district where these groups have been given carte blanche to teach these things to our kids.

David:

Well, we’ve seen a number of articles on this in recent months. And the thing that strikes me about these articles is this is not coming from the Bronx in New York City, it’s not coming from Marin County, California, it’s not coming out of San Francisco. It’s coming– the articles are coming out of Tennessee, out of Texas, the ones that Mat talked about we’re talking about Virginia, suburban Virginia. These are not states you think of as being radical leftist progressive states. But the point is that education has become radical and progressive even in red states, even in purple states, even the states that are that are not heavy blue.

Not Just a Couple of Extreme Examples

David:

And so that’s the striking part that stands out about this is we’re not looking at wackiness that comes out of wacky left states. We’re looking at wackiness that comes out of red states, and out of suburban areas, and areas where you’d never expect this. Which tells you how pervasive this is. This is not just, “€œWell, you got a couple of extreme examples.”€ Well, even if that were true look at the states they came out of, that to get your attention. But that’s not true in that there are dozens, and dozens, and dozens, of examples.

Just google some of this stuff over the last 24 months and see how many of these pop up. This is a national trend, a national movement, and people really need to pay attention to this.

Tim:

Well, guys, let me jump in too and point out – who was it that said the parents didn’t have access to this information? Who told them that?

Rick:

The school district.

David:

Yeah, that was the school superintendent.

Tim:

Oh, the school superintendent. And is that an elected position or is that an appointed position?

David:

Oh no, are you kidding? That’s an elitist position, you get hired to that position. And I know you’re headed, Tim, but I’m going to throw an old school idiom in here. When this stuff used to happen we used to say you’ve been educated beyond your intelligence. No intelligent people would think about this, but you’ve been educated to the point where your intelligence no longer works. And, Tim, the point you’re making this is not an elected official, this is not an accountable official. This is someone who has the higher degrees that go with being a superintendent and they’ve been educated beyond their intelligence.

Where”€™s the School Board?

Tim:

I would love to know where the school board is on this. Why don’t you have people– obviously you have parents that are upset, but where’s the school board saying, “€œWait a second, no, no, no, no.”€ There has to be some people somewhere in the district who are working there– this is where you almost feel like that somebody would leak out these links to these videos, right. Where on some level of ridiculous somebody’s got to have enough common sense to go, no, parents ought to see this.

But the fact that at this point there’s so much cover up also makes me think they know exactly what they’re doing. This is incredibly intentional. And, dad, as you mentioned, this isn’t in necessarily even the most liberal places either. The problem is though that a lot of times the people that are in charge, even in seemingly conservative states, or Christian places and districts, a lot of times, as you’re mentioning, they”€™re educated beyond the level of common sense and basic knowledge. This is the battle we are dealing with.

Rick, you mentioned why in the world what would parents be still thinking that public schools are a good idea. Obviously, there are parents who are in situations that this is what we can do, this is what we have. But I bet there’s a lot of parents out there that are still thinking, “€œWell, this doesn’t happen in high school. We don’t–“€ You would be shocked the things that are taught in the public schools in your area. Especially when it comes to things like human sexuality, when it comes to things like evolution, when it comes to things– You can go down a laundry list of items and in your public school kids are being taught subjective morality, that every student should determine for themselves what’s right and wrong.

There are basic things that are anti the fundamental values that the parents who listen to this program, that your values are not being reinforced in public school. And so, and again, not to be condemning a parent, maybe you’re in a situation where you don’t have a lot of options. I get that. But if we’re not careful, if we’re not intentional, in talking with kids about these problems then we can’t be surprised or or even disappointed if our kids end up believing crazy things and we’re going, “€œOh my gosh, I had no idea.”€ No, you can just know right now – public schools are not promoting the same values that you’re promoting at home. And so you are in a constant battle right now if your kids are in public school.

Rick:

Welcome back. Thanks for staying with us on WallBuilders Live. And just following up, as we went to break, Tim, you were pointing out this is not in just your inner city school districts or you’re more liberally controlled school districts. This is happening in small town America. I’m fighting it right here in Dripping Springs, the big city of Dripping Springs, Texas. My little rural town, exact same things are being– Planned Parenthood programs, and all kinds of left wing philosophy.

David:

Rick, let me jump in on that.

Rick:

Yeah.

David:

We were gonna talk action items and something Tim said really set me off on this because I think Tim”€™s exactly right. If I were going to put some kind of ranking on this I would say the odds are 9 out of 10 that somebody in your school district– and I don’t care where you’re from. If you’re from the panhandle of Oklahoma, or if you”€™re from the cornfields of Indiana, somebody in your school district is teaching this. Now, we have seen occasions where that when it gets brought out by parents the superintendent will step up and tell the teacher, “€œStop that”€. But there is somebody in your school that’s teaching that – whether it’s the superintendent defending it or stopping it, somebody is teaching it. So, what do you do?

What Do You Do?

David:

And in looking at school boards– and you asked the question, Tim, where’s the school board on this stuff? That is one of the easiest places to which you can get elected to is a school board. And one of the things that– Tim and I help people when they run for school board and one of the things that we tell them is, “€œWhen you get there, you remember that you do not defer to the experts. You’re elected by the people to keep this thing on track.”€ And what you will get inundated with at the schools is, “€œOh, now, we have all the degrees and what you need to do is support us because you’re the interface between the school and the community. And you need to help us put a good face on.”€

No, you’re there to hold them accountable. And so if you go on that board, you need to ignore what a lot of the school attorneys say at times when it comes to religious liberty. Because a school will say, “€œOh, don’t let that kid pray at graduation because you can have a lawsuit.”€ Well, you can have a lawsuit because your hair is red and your boots are brown. So, you need to be the one to stand up and we need more people just stepping up and saying, “€œYou know what? I’m going to go into that board just so I can hold them accountable over the silliness that often goes on.”€

Like, Rick, you said Planned Parenthood curriculum is coming in so many schools. It is flooding the nation right now all over. And that is an action item – everybody can start recruiting or helping find people to run for school board who will go in with common sense and not be snowed with this thing that, “€œWell, we’re the experts and you’re just here to support us.”€ “€œNo, I represent the people and I”€™m here to make sure that education is what it’s supposed to be – that it”€™s not indoctrination.”€

Rick:

So, even just, I mean, action items, David. Let’s think about what people in their home areas can do. Because some people will often say, “€œI can’t run for school board.”€ But hey, your phone call, your letter, your showing up at the school board meeting can make a difference. And I promise you – these school board meetings, most of the time there’s a handful of people out there.

David:

That”€™s right.

This Will Get Their Attention

Rick:

Very few people show up and let their voice be heard at these things.

David:

That”€™s right.

Rick:

So, they’re going to pay attention. You get 10 people from your church and go out there together, they’re going to go, “€œOh, wait a minute, we better think twice about this.”€

David:

Yeah, you’re exactly right, Rick, because they do not get many people to show up. It’s usually an empty chamber except with them just meeting there. And so if you take several people, or if you actually make actual phone calls to them, that is something they do not get, they’re not used to that. And sunlight is the best disinfectant and when they know people are watching that does have an impact, it definitely does.

Rick:

And we’ve seen it even takeovers of school boards. Obviously, we’ve talked about it on the program a lot churches that have gotten involved in and run candidates, and shown up in force. And as few people that vote in these races it’s very doable to do. You’ve just got to get people motivated and get them involved. That’s the only thing in the long run that’s going to stop these crazy programs from coming in. Because it’s– these leftist organizations have funding from these billionaires that are helping to back them. They have funding trying to change our culture and they”€™ve, frankly, been very successful at it in the public school system.

So, the only thing that”€™s going to change that is if we take over those local school boards as conservatives and as churchgoing folks and say, “€œHey, look, we’re not going to shy away from this and just exit. We may not send our kids in there, but we’re going to make sure we’re still having a voice in what happens in our local community.”€

Sex Education Out of Control In Public Schools And What We Can Do About It

Rick:
