Faith And The Culture
Rick:
You”ve found your way to the intersection of faith and the culture. Â This is WallBuilders Live! Where we”re talking about today”s hottest topics on policy, faith, and the culture, always from a Biblical, historical, and Constitutional perspective.
We’re here today with David Barton, he”s America’s premier historian and our founder here at WallBuilders. Also, Tim Barton, national speaker, pastor, and president of WallBuilders. And my name is Rick Green, I’m a former Texas state legislator.
Visit our websites today at WallBuildersLive.com and also WallBuilders.com.
Most of our programs deal directly with the U.S. and what’s happening with us in our nation Constitutionally and culturally and all that. But often we also go outside the U.S. and look at what’s happening in the world. David, Tim, Christians are persecuted across the world in many places and times we feel like it’s persecution here, but it’s usually legal or not so much physical. But, in other places around the world it’s true persecution. We have done some programs on that in the last couple of years. Today we want to highlight some of that and what can be done about it.
Slavery is the Biggest it Has Ever Been
David:
We really do live in a kind of a weird time quite frankly. If you look at where we are with technology, and you look at where we are, we would say, with education and with scientific advance,s and with so many other things. I think most people would say this is the most civilized time in world history. We’ve never had a time like this. It”s got to be like a renaissance, all the stuff, and yet there’s two things that stand out that I find very intriguing. Despite all the technology, we have we have more people enslaved today than at any time in the history of the world. So, slavery is the biggest it has ever been. You think, “Surely we’re past slavery now.” No, it’s the biggest has ever been.
Rick:
No kidding. That’s shocking.
Tim:
That seems so odd to any kind of comprehension to be able to take that in because we don’t see slavery around us. In America, certainly, we hear back to civil rights and the Civil War and before that. And people say the founding fathers and we have a past of slavery, but we certainly feel like we’re so far beyond that.
This is where, so often, our reality is only what our eyes can see or what we feel and sense. And because we have never been over to Africa or the Middle East and seen, “Oh my gosh, there are people literally enslaved – that person is literally a slave right now.” It’s such a foreign concept. We can’t wrap our minds around it because we don’t see it and experience it here anymore.
Rick:
Exactly.
Tim:
We think the entire world has just extinguished this and it doesn’t exist anymore. When in reality, it’s happening all over the world around us. It’s just not in America.
David:
And it really is ironic with the way this is happening. Because there are so many people who are protesting, for example, what the police are doing. Which, okay, if the police are doing something bad, that’s wrong. Bu,t we’re going to argue that not many police do what’s bad.
Corruption in Guatemala
Tim:
And let me also point out, it’s always in the context of what you know. And if your standard is perfect, then certainly every police officer falls short of perfect. I was on a mission trip not too long ago in Guatemala. In Guatemala we were working at a orphanage at a ministry down there and we actually were building an extension on.  So they said, “Hey, Tim, there’s another guy with me, you guys run down to the hardware store we need you to pick up some of these plumbing pieces, and valves, some pipe.”
And he says, “Now, when you go,” he said, “here’s the money to buy what you need. Put this in your sock.” He said, “Then here’s a five dollar bill. Put this in your pocket.” He says, “”When you are robbed, give them the five dollars from your pocket.”
I said, “Wait a second, whoa, whoa, whoa. You didn’t say  if I’m robbed, you said when I’m robbed.” He said, “No, no, no.” He said, “The military, the police, are walking around, they’re going to see you, they’re going recognize you’re not from Guatemala, they’re going to hold you up at gunpoint.” And I’m going, “Wait a second, they’re going to hold me up at gunpoint?!”
And he said, “Oh yeah, they’re going to hold you up at gunpoint. When they hold you up, they’re going to say they’re going to put you in prison, but they will allow you to pay to get out of prison. And so they’re going to ask for whatever you have in your pocket.
So just make sure you don’t have very much in your pocket or they’re going to take all your money to let you go. So keep the majority of your money in the sock, but make sure you always have something in your pocket you can give them.”
Not the Norm for American Police
Tim:
But he’s explaining this as a normal way of life that this is just what happens down here, you embrace it, you learn to live with it, and you give them five dollars and you go on your way. That is such a foreign concept to an American because we don’t tolerate that level of corruption from our police force, from our military. And so when we look at something a police officer does — now a police officer can do something grotesque and absolutely should be punished. The strictest penalty, yes, use it against them if they’ve done something grotesque. They should be penalized accordingly. However, that’s not the norm for American police.
David:
It really is fairly rare percentage wise. For example, black lives matter, they’re protesting what police are doing. And you’re talking about one one hundredth of 1 percent of black deaths. hen yoWu look at black deaths, 90 percent of blacks who die of violent death as a homicide, or a murder, or whatever. Over 90 percent of those occur in the inner city.
It’s a problem with gangs and what’s going on there. So, let’s focus on the 90 percent that are being killed not the 1 100th or 1,000th of one percent. We want to protect that life too, but my gosh, let’s go after the 90 percent.
Tim:
And you’re not even talking about the 50 percent of black babies that are aborted.
David:
Right.
Tim:
Or maybe even higher than 50 percent, I don”t remember that number. But, it’s over 50 percent that are aborted.
Rick:
Well, even just thinking about police actions, right. How many police interactions happen every hour of every day all across the country? So, these incidents that we see are probably one one-thousandth of one percent of the actual–
David:
Incidents.
Rick:
— accidental interactions with police officers.
A Distorted Focus?
David:
But what we don’t see — we see that, and it gets highlighted in the news, and they make an issue of it, and they blow it up bigger. And so, yes, we don’t want a single life to be lost for wrong purposes. We just don’t want that. But maybe that’s one life here when we’re talking millions outside of the United States. Again it”s the highest rate of slavery in the history of the world.
The highest number of slaves we’ve ever had and we’re talking about one life. Which one life is important, no question about it, but our focus is so distorted because we just don’t know. And it’s the same — you mentioned even the Christian persecution. We have a higher number of Christians being killed every year now than at any time in the history of the world. One hundred thousand Christians a year are martyred for their faith and we’re wining about been discriminated — somebody said something mean to us on Facebook or something. Â Â
Rick:
Right.
Tim:
And if you really are someone that cares about injustice, right, if you really — I am a social justice warrior, I want equality. If those statements were actually true, you would look not just at somebody that hurt your feelings or said something rude to you,
you would go, “No, no, no.” Forget protesting Ben Shapiro speaking at University of Berkeley out in California. No, let’s actually look over to places where they’re beheading Christians, right.
Rick:
Yeah.
Tim:
Where they’re taking parents and killing them in front of their kids and then giving the kids an option and if they don’t convert then they’re going to kill the kids. And they’re throwing homosexuals off rooftops. Or there’s slavery happening. If you really care about justice, then you would have a much bigger field of view than just what your emotions tell you about what’s happening right around you.
We Need People to Help Open the Lens for Us
Rick:
And we need people to help open the lens for us, right. We are usually self-focused and we only see what the media is feeding us here. So, I’ve even caught myself, like when we had Johnny Moore on a couple of years ago, it was an eye-opener for me about this persecution issue around the world because we just are so centrally focused on ourselves.
Got to take a quick break. Let’s get some of that wake-up call today. Stay with us folks. You’re listening to WallBuilders Live.
Moment From American History
This is Tim Barton with another moment from American History. The year after the American War for Independence ended we begin addressing the issue of Muslim terrorists in North Africa, who were attacking American ships, killing, and enslaving American seamen.
Congress dispatched John Adams and Thomas Jefferson to negotiate peace. When they asked the Muslim ambassador the reason for the unprovoked attacks he told them that it was written in their Qur’an, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them whenever they could be found.
Sixteen years of negotiations failed and in 1801 America send its military to crush the terrorists. When that war ended in 1805 the first American edition of the Qur’an was published, urging Americans to read the Qur’an to see for themselves that its teachings were incompatible with the safety and peace of non-Muslims. To see the first American Qur’an and to get more information about America’s first war on Islamic terror, go to WallBuilders.com.
The Nazarene Fund
Rick:
Welcome back to WallBuilders Live. Thanks for staying with us today. We’re talking about Christian persecution around the world today and the need for all of us to really wake up to that.
And, Tim, as you were saying before the break, if we really want justice, we need to open our eyes to what’s happening all around the world. You guys have been very involved in this in the last few years with something called the Nazarene Fund. Catch us up on what’s been happening there. And I guess, remind us too because we’ve got a lot of new listeners since we did the program about the Nazarene Fund a few months ago.
David:
The Nazarene Fund — the word is taken “Nazarene” from the mark that ISIS puts on the House of believers. As they go into a village, as they go into a town, the scouts go in first and they start searching to see who are the true believers, who are the Muslims, and who are the infidels, the Christians. And wherever they find a Christian home they will put the mark of the Nazarene on that home. And that’s what we call the Nazarene Fund.
So, what we’ve done, is over the last two years raised 18 million dollars and gone in and we’ve become probably the biggest player in the Middle East in terms of rescuing Christians.
We have been able to take about 8,300 of them out of country to safe homes in Canada, and in Australia, and Brazil, and Slovakia. We’ve been able to give assistance to about 53,000 of them. Some through helping rebuild their churches and schools that ISIS has destroyed, some through moving them to safer locations for the time being till ISIS gets driven out of town.
ISIS and Sex Slavery
David:
And we’ve also been directly involved in extractions – literally going and where there are sex slaves. ISIS has sex slaves. And the Kurds over in the Middle East, they are the most reasonable of all the groups there are probably and the Kurds hate ISIS.
So the Kurds partner with us and they’re willing to go and save these girls from ISIS and it’s not an easy thing. We’ve had two of the Kurdish soldiers killed in these extractions.
And they work very closely with intelligence and know exactly when to go in and get them, how to get them, how to get out, and they have all the escape routes and it”s still really dangerous.
So, two these guys have lost their lives saving these sex slaves over there. But we get the girls out, we get them moved to different places. We’ve sent, oh my gosh, I don”t know how many thousand of these sex slaves we’ve been able to send to Australia. And so it’s a big deal.
By the way, we were talking about slavery in the first segment – we actually own the bill of sale for one of these girls – a slave bill of sale. She was sold for 1,500 dollars. We have that bill of sale. We were able to rescue her. But, slavery is a big deal.
This is big stuff that’s happening over there. It’s not a small thing. And so we’ve been able to work with intelligence. We find intelligence that needs to be known elsewhere and we can sometimes identify were key ISIS leaders are and then the intelligence community passes that on and they go in and take them out. And ISIS is pretty much now moved out of the Middle East.
They have moved into other places, they’ve moved in Africa. The concerted effort against them the last few months has pretty much made it too hot for them to stay there. So, they’re popping up in other nations now.
Operation Underground Rescue
David:
So it’s time for us at the Nazarene Fund to kind of partner and hand this off. And we’ve been partnering with someone who has the same objectives and goals. That’s Operation Underground Rescue. They’ve been doing this internationally in other places for a good while. Going in and saving sex slaves, and getting them out of there, and other forms of slavery.
And so now that ISIS is moving into Africa, and now that they’re moving in bigger numbers into the Americas, they’re moving in other places. Operation Underground Rescue — they already have assets on the ground there. So, we’ve got great assets on the ground in the Middle East. We’re handing them off to Operation Underground Rescue  – a great group.
They’re headed by Tim Ballard. Â Tim, I think, was a former SEAL and a former CIA. And his intelligence assets and military skills are unbelievable. And what these guys do is quite incredible.
So now, Glenn Beck, and I’ve been running the Nazarene Fund for Glenn Beck, this is his charity arm and so we”ve been running that. Now, we’re just passing that off to Tim Ballard who will take it to level 2.0.
And now we’re expanding across the world and we’re working right now to raise another 25 million dollars to keep these rescues going. And, quite frankly, to save the lives of Christians and others across the world. Christians and religious minorities, get them out of the hands of ISIS, get the slaves gone. So Tim Ballard is our guest. Great, great, guy. Great history. And he’s the new CEO of the Nazarene Fund 2.0.
Rick:
The underground that you mentioned already doing just amazing work around the planet as you said. So this is really a match made in heaven no kidding. And no pun intended there for this to come together is going to make it even that much more effective.
Stay with us folks. Tim Ballard, our special guest. You’re listening to WallBuilders Live!

Merging Similar Missions
Rick:
Welcome back. Thanks for staying with us here on WallBuilders Live. Tim Ballard is with us. Thanks so much for being with us, Tim. Thanks for your good work in Operation Underground Railroad as well.
Tim Ballard:
Thank you, Rick. It’s a pleasure to be on with you.
Rick:
Hey, man, you guys have done just incredible work at underground. And now you’re teaming up once again with Glenn Beck and now with the Nazarene Fund to kind of spread to some other areas and taking your expertise into what they had been doing. Tell us a little bit about this merging of the two and what you’re going to be doing.
Tim Ballard:
Well, it’s interesting that the Nazarene Fund has been doing something similar kind of similar operations, but the mission has been different. It has been focused and in the Middle East helping persecuted Christians and other persecuted minorities with relocating. But, what Glenn found was that the deeper they got into those operations, they found that there’s, even more, kind of overlap with OUR. For example, a lot of these ISIS elements, and ISIS themselves, have been taking these kids. The ones that didn’t get out, they’ve been kidnapped, they’ve been trafficked, are being used for organ harvesting, are being used for sex slavery.
Helping Kids Around the World
Tim Ballard:
And so as we kind of looked at what we could do to help those kids, it makes sense to have Glenn have me be named as the CEO of the as Nazarene Fund so that we can kind of have a better coordination between the two organizations and leverage each other’s expertise. And really with both organizations, now we can attack slavery in all its forms everywhere around the world. Still focusing on the work in the Middle East, but also getting into other areas and really just bolstering the entire effort and the entire movement to end slavery.
Rick:
You guys started, I think the first time I saw you on Beck talking about Operation Underground and what you guys were doing maybe four or five years ago. How long have you all been doing this?
Tim Ballard:
It’s been about four years.
Incredible Rescue Stories
Rick:
Okay. Four years and you’re — you’ve been really all over the country and a lot of the stuff you do you don’t talk about and people don’t see it in the news stories. But incredible rescue missions really attacking the sex slave industry right in the heart. And a lot of kids have been rescued because of what you all do.
So just, first of all, thank you for what you’ve already done and all of the guys that are part of what you all do. Just — a lot of people hear stories maybe, they don’t realize it’s also happening in our backyard right here in the U.S. But just so important that people get involved.
And so they can give, they can be a part of this, by funding the operations that you guys are doing. And so we want to give out both websites for Operation Underground and Nazarene Fund. First give us Operation Underground.
Tim Ballard:
It”s Ourrescue.org.
Rick:
Ourrescue.org. And the movie you guys did. Â what, a year ago, year and a half ago? That’s available on the website as well?
Tim Ballard:
That’s available at theabolitionistmovie.com and that’s called The Abolitionist. And kind of is a documentary of our first rescue missions. So, it’s been exciting.
What Does Our Giving Do?
Rick:
And it actually takes viewers on the road with you and into into the belly of the beast. Really cool and well done the way you did it. I think wakes up people a lot to what’s going on.
Okay, the Nazarene Fund, so that people can go there as well. Is TheNazareneFund.org. And when people give to that, what does that help to do? I mean, there’s a lot of things that have to take place behind the scenes where you guys can even do a rescue mission. But those dollars, if people are going to donate today, what can you tell them a little bit about how that’s going to help?
Tim Ballard:
I can tell you that all the funds coming into the Nazarene Fund go directly to projects and services. The admin are taken care of in other ways, so that’s an exciting thing that we”re able to offer. But the Nazarene Fund really, again, the emphasis is still the persecuted Christians in the Middle East. They’re always being attacked. You can push ISIS out, but now they’re stuck in other elements.
A Global Effort Against Slavery
Tim Ballard:
So ISIS grabbed them and took them with them to other places. It’s a constant effort, always changing, always dynamic, and so our focus is there. But, with the announcement of me coming on as CEO, we”ve been working for months to expand that mission and find other persecuted Christians and other religious minorities in other places, for example, in Africa. And then also these funds will go to support joint operations with Operation Underground Railroad in places that OUR already exists, but bolstering those efforts. So, that’s what’s so neat about the Nazarene Fund – it truly is a global effort against slavery.
Rick:
And, Tim, a lot of people, when they do see some of those things that are happening out there they’re saying, “Man, you know, I’m not a special forces guy, I don’t have the experience of these guys, I can’t go in and do that sort of thing.” But here’s a way they can come alongside you guys and help to equip you. And money matters – that”s just the bottom line. It takes money to fight this war and to battle what’s going on out there. In fact, at the heart of it, it’s money is the reason that the enemy and the evil folks at the heart of this are doing it.
So, we have to combat it that way. And it is important for people to partner with y’all and come alongside and help you do this. So TheNazareneFund.org is the place to go. TheNazareneFund.org. We”ll have links today at WallBuildersLive.com to make it easy.
Tim, really looking forward to some updates from you as we get into 2018, other ways folks can help, maybe even be able to report for us on some of the successful missions. We really appreciate you, bro, keep up the great work out there.
Tim Ballard:
Hey, Rick, thank you so much. We’ll be back to report for sure. Thank you, guys. Appreciate your support.
Rick:
That’s Tim Ballard. The website is TheNazareneFund.org. We’ll be right back with David and Tim Barton.

Biographical Sketches
Hi friends! This is Tim Barton of WallBuilders. This is a time when most Americans don’t know much about American history or even heroes of the faith. I know, oftentimes as parents, we”re trying to find good content for our kids to read.
If you remember back in the Bible, the Book of Hebrews it has the Faith Hall of Fame, where they outlined the leaders of faith that had gone before them. Well, this is something that as Americans we really want to go back and outline some of these heroes not just of American history, but heroes of Christianity and our faith as well.
I wanted to let you know about some biographical sketches we have available on our website. One is called, “The Courageous Leaders Collection“ and this collection includes people like Abigail Adams, Abraham Lincoln, Francis Scott Key, George Washington Carver, Susanna Wesley, even the Wright brothers.
There’s a second collection called, “Heroes of History“ in this collection you read about people like Benjamin Franklin, Christopher Columbus, Daniel Boone, George Washington, Harriet Tubman, the list goes on and on.
This is a great collection for your young person to have and read. And it’s a providential view of American and Christian history. This is available at WallBuilders.com.
Moment From American History
This is David Barton with another moment from America’s history. Although education has remained an emphasis in America for nearly 200 years. What has changed the most over that period of time is the philosophy of education. For example, while religion finds no place of refuge in our schools today, such was not the case at the time of our founding fathers.
In fact, when the Delaware Indian chiefs brought their youth to be trained in America schools on June the 12th 1779, George Washington told them, “You do well to wish to learn our arts and our way of life and above all the religion of Jesus Christ. These will make you a greater and happier people than you are. Congress will do everything they can to assist you in this wise intention.”
According to George Washington, what students learned above all in American education at the time of the Founding Fathers was the religion of Jesus Christ. For more information on God’s hand in American history contact WallBuilders at 1-800-8-REBUILD.
Rick:
Thanks for staying with us here on WallBuilders Live. Thanks to Tim Ballard for taking time to join us as well. Back with David and Tim Barton now. And, guys, very excited about this teaming up between Underground and Nazarene. And, of course, David, you’ve talked in the past on our program about the types of missions that have to take place here. This is actually going to work really well for these two groups to be working together.
Give a Lincoln to End Slavery
David:
Yeah, it will be really good. And there are new aspects that are coming out as well. We know that organ harvesting is going on. Not only are they taking these kids now as sex slaves, they are also taking them, and killing them. They’re harvesting their organs and selling them on the black market.
So that word is out now and we’ve got to be able save those kids too. And so, this is something that we’re going to be working on in new ways. Quite frankly, for the last two years, the 18 million that have come in it has not been major, super mega-donors to do it – it’s been small donors. And one of the things we’ve started saying is, “Give a Lincoln to end slavery.”
Abraham Lincoln ended slavery. Lincoln’s on the five dollar bill. Just give a Lincoln a month to end slavery. That’s 60 bucks a year, but we’ve had about 220,000 donors as well. And so, when you look at those numbers, that’s a good way to do something outside of the United States.
It’s not a big bite in your pocket, but man, is that a huge, huge, huge, deal for those who are Christians, who are brothers, and those who are in slavery, and those who are being persecuted by ISIS and killed by ISIS. And by the way, to show you something about these folks – as these ISIS Scouts went into one of these towns, they found one of these guys and they sent him a letter back and said, “Okay, here’s the deal. We know you’re a Christian, we know you and your family are Christians. We’re going to be in town at this particular time, on this particular day. We will give you a chance to renounce your faith and if you don’t, we will crucify you.”
“We”re Not Worthy to Die the Same Way Our Savior Did”
David:
And so the father got the family together and said, “Here’s the deal. What are we to do?” And they said, “Well, we’re not renouncing our faith.” So grab this – the father wrote ISIS a letter back and said, “We will be in our home on that day when you arrive and we will not renounce our faith. So we’re happy to give our lives. There’s only one request we have – we beg you, please don’t crucify us. We’re not worthy to die the same death our Savior died. Kill us any other way you want to, but don’t crucify us because we’re just not worthy to die the same way He did.”
Tim:
Wow.
David:
And so that’s a father and his family who sent that message to ISIS. And here we are–
Tim:
Which, by the way, that’s certainly following some of the early apostles–
Rick:
Yeah.
Tim:
–the idea that Peter said, “Hey, crucify me upside down. I’m not worthy to die like my Lord.” This is certainly people that seem dedicated to the Christian faith on levels that, as an American comfort level of Christianity, it’s hard to even imagine. But I’m curious, so, did ISIS just show up and end up killing them? What happened to them?
David:
Well, ISIS showed up and ended up not killing them. They were left alone so far. Now, this is ISIS, who knows when they show back up–
Tim:
Sure.
David:
— and they come through. But at that point — but just the courage of being able to do that–
Tim:
Yeah.
David:
–“I’m willing to give my life, our family, all the daughters, we all voted and none of us are backing down.”
Tim:
Wow.
It Makes a Big, Big, Difference in Ending Slavery
David:
And that’s the kind of people we’re saving. So, MercuryOne.org. Give a Lincoln to end slavery is kind of what we’re saying and it’s an opportunity to be able to give some money. But go to MercuryOne.org and you’ll see the Nazarene Fund there and you can give a single gift or sign up and give five bucks a month. But this is something every Christian can do and it makes a big, big, difference.
Rick:
And, Tim, you used exactly the right word. In the comfort of our Christian life here in America, this is such an easy thing to do and it should be our burden. We’re supposed to bear one another’s burdens. So, becoming a part of this is a very important thing.
Special thanks to Tim Ballard for joining us today and for the good work they’ve already done at Operation Underground. And so excited about what’s going to happen with Nazarene Fund to continue that good work there as well.
We”ll have easy links for you today at WallBuildersLive.com to make that donation over at Mercury One. Thanks for listening today to WallBuilders Live.
