Faith And The Culture

Rick:

Welcome to the intersection of faith and the culture. This is WallBuilders Live and it’s Good News Friday! That means we’re going to get some great news today. We’re going to inspire and equip you.

We’re here with David Barton looking at things from a biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective. David’s America’s premier historian. And Tim Barton is with us as well, national speaker and pastor and president of WallBuilders. My name’s Rick Green, I’m a former Texas state legislator.

I always look forward to these Friday programs because this good news lets me know, hey, the system works if we work the system. If we’re engaged, if we’re out there living out our citizenship, if we’re actually applying biblical principles in the culture, we can get some great results – no doubt about it. And yes we want to have the John Quincy Adams attitude of, “Duty is ours, results are God.” So, we do our duty regardless of the results. But, man, I love hearing some of the positive results we’re going to hear today.

You can get more of this at our website, WallBuildersLive.com where you can go into the archive section and listen to some of those previous Friday programs and more good news. Or you can listen to Foundations of Freedom Thursday programs where we dive into those foundational principles. Or Monday through Wednesday we have some fantastic guests, so check those out as well.

Also go to WallBuilders.com to get the tools you can use to educate, inspire, and equip, your family. Lots of great DVD programs, articles you can download, all kinds of great things there at the website, WallBuilders.com. And actually, I always say DVD programs – you can download MP3s. Yeah, we’re actually a little more advanced than just DVDs, so you can download MP3s, you can listen on your phone, all kinds of cool stuff there.

David, Tim, we’ve got a lot of good news to share with folks and I think, David, you’re going to be first up to share the good news. What do you got?

4000 Schedule C Appointments

David:

Well, I’m going to start with some things going on and the Trump administration. One of these is an issue that we talked about a few weeks ago, but I’m liking the direction that it’s heading right now. And that is the really firm position that Trump has been taking– and when I say Trump I mean the Trump administration, all those officials in it. While we say Trump, you need to understand that there are 4000 Schedule C appointees that Trump has appointed in his ministration or that he is appointing. So, when you say Trump that means the whole big machine of all the people he’s appointed.

We’ve talked about Mike Pompeo and how he was confirmed as the secretary of state. And by the way, I made a mistake when we were talking about that in the program. Because the hearings were going on then and I talked about how this U.S. Senator Cory Gardner of Colorado was opposing that. It was actually Cory Booker who is a New England senator opposing it. Cory Gardner is a Republican from Colorado, he was not. So, I misquoted the last name- got the first name right Corey. But nonetheless, Pompeo was confirmed, he is now in place.

And so he has taken very strong positions – not provocative positions, but he’s just drawn some lines in the sand. And the most recent is with Iran saying, “Look, the deal that Obama made unilaterally with Iran, we’re sitting aside.” Iran never signed a treaty, never signed any kind of compact. They didn’t do anything except receive 150 billion dollars. And what that did was that bailed Iran out of all the problems they were having.

If you recall, at the time that a hundred and fifty billion dollars went in from Obama Iran was starting to see internal revolution. The people were so discontent, the situation in the country was so bad that there was actually starting to be a rebellion, and insurrection, a coup, if you will, against that radical regime. And–

Rick:

The sanctions were working, in other words.

Trade and Sanctions

David:

The sanctions were working, the people were so impoverished that they were throwing their leaders out. And so we bailed them out, or we, Obama bail them out with 150 billion dollars and said this was part of the Iran agreement. Well, there was no agreement. It was simply unilaterally.

So, what has happened is Pompeo has come back in and said, “Hey, we’re not only reimposing the sanctions, we’re making them even stronger than they were. And by the way, if you’re a U.S. trading partner and you violate these sanctions then you have just given up your right to trade with the United States.” And the reason this is significant is here’s some of the deals that are on the outside working with Iran.

For example, France. There’s an energy giant named Total in France and they’ve got this deal working with Iran worth five billion dollars to help develop Iran’s largest gas field. Now, the problem is if you develop their gas fields Iran already makes a lot of money in selling us oil. But if you develop their gas fields they’re going to produce more oil, sell more oil. You’re going to keep them from having pressure because they will be upping their economic output. So, France, if you want to do this with Iran you’re just not going to be able to trade with America anymore.

Norway, same way. Norway has a group called Saga Energy. They have a 3 billion dollar deal with Iran to build solar power plants in Iran. Again, that helps take the pressure off Iran, it keeps her administration in position. So, Norway, you want to do that? Great. You’re just not going to be able to trade with  the U.S. anymore. And then Airbus was planning to sell 100 jets to Iran. And of course that helps Airbus, but that helps Iran big time.

So, all of these things now with the sanctions going back in place, it’s really put the economic pressure back on Iran. And in putting that pressure back on Iran it’s going to be so much harder for them to have the resources to continue furthering terrorism across the Middle East. I think every intelligence expert agrees that right now nearly all the unrest out of the Middle East is coming through Iran. Whether it’s what they’re doing in Syria, what they’re doing directly attacking into Israel through Syria. Whether it’s funding groups- Hamas, and Hezbollah, etc. It’s Iran.

And so President Obama took the pressure off Iran, terrorism goes up, we’re putting it back on, and we’ll see how these other nations respond. But I think it’s a really, really, really, good deal that we’re taking a firm stand to really bring some peace to the Middle East by, if you will, decapitating the number one serpent over there that’s really feeding the turmoil in the Middle East – and that’s Iran.

Rick:

What a difference it makes to have courageous leadership, leadership with moral clarity that act can actually tell who the good guys the bad guys are. What a difference it makes not just for our nation, but for the whole world.

Quick break. We’ll come back with more good news Tim Barton up next with good news. You’re listening to WallBuilders Live.

Leadership Training Program

Rick:

Hey, friends! We’ve got a great program to share with you today. It’s the WallBuilders Leadership Training Program and it’s an opportunity for 18 to 25 year olds to come spend two weeks diving into the original documents we’re always talking about here on WallBuilders Live.

Tim, you’ve already been doing this a couple of summers and seen the results of young people coming to this program. We’re going to see more of them coming this year.

Tim:

Yeah, Rick, it’s something that’s been cool to see the transformation with young people coming in. The emphasis, for us, largely is a pursuit of truth. We have a culture that doesn’t know what truth is. We don’t know what biblical truth is, or constitutional truth, or the American heritage that we have. And so we really dive into original documents and say, “Well, what did they actually write? What did they actually do? Not just what did somebody say, what is actually true, and the truth is what’s transformational.

David:

Yeah, guys. This really is a remarkable opportunity. And for those who want to spend time with us and spend time in the original documents, this is a great program. So, if you’re from 18 to 25, or you know someone who’s 18 to 25, send them to sign up for one of our three sessions this summer at WallBuilders.com/leadershiptraining.

Rick:

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live. Good News Friday today. We appreciate you stay with us. Tim Barton has the next piece of good news for us – Tim?

You Can’t Reference God in a Graduation Speech?

Tim:

Alright, guys, the one on top of my stack comes out of Colorado and it is from Colorado Mesa University. Which I had not heard about until I read the article. But in Colorado Mesa University, recently in May at their graduation, there was a nursing student who was set to give a speech to other graduates, other nursing majors. Her name was Carissa Erickson. And in this speech she was going to give there were some Bible verses, there was a reference to God, to Jesus Christ, and the University looked at her speech and said, “Wait a second, you cannot have religious content in your graduation speech. That is unacceptable.” They said, “It might offend someone.”

And so fortunately, Alliance Defending Freedom got involved and said, “Wait a second, you cannot censor her free speech etc., etc.” The school came back, apologized, said, “We are so sorry. The faculty that advised her to remove it was trying to do the good job and protect the separation of church and state, just didn’t realize that was not within the legal bounds to restrict her free speech.” So, she was allowed to give her speech with all of the God, Jesus, and Bible references that were in there.

What’s interesting is the verse they point out in this article that was noted by the school administrative person who saw problems with it. The verse was John 16:33 where Jesus said, “Take courage. I have overcome in the world.” What she wanted to encourage them was take courage that God was in control etc.” And they were afraid that might be offensive to someone.

Anyway, the good news is the school as has gone a different direction. It was also interesting in this article that the reason the school– and the school pointed out to ADF, the reason the school kind of went this direction was back in 2015 they received complaints from the Freedom From Religion Foundation because there were Gideons who were giving out Bibles at the pinning ceremony. And so they said, “Wait a second, there cannot be Gideons giving out that offensive New Testament.” And so the Freedom From Religion Foundation wrote the school, the school goes, “Oh, we can’t have religion, that’s bad.” So, that was why this unfolded again.

Yay for Alliance Defending Freedom

Tim:

Fortunately, the Alliance Defending Freedom gets involved. Carissa is able to deliver her speech uncensored including God, and Jesus, and the Bible. So, ultimately, very good news as the school is learning not just what the Freedom From Religion Foundation wants them to do, but what actually is legal.

And actually, speaking of Alliance Defending Freedom, the next one on my list if I can throw this one in real quick before we need to go to the next break. Alliance Defending Freedom put out an update because also in May, Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin signed a piece of legislation. This was actually helping keep kids first was kind of the idea of the bill. But one of the trends and movements that’s been happening nationally is with adoption agencies.

If adoption agencies of faith who believe that marriage is one man and one woman, who believe genders are boys and girls, the very basic things that humanity has believed for thousands of years. If you still believe those things, if you believe what the Bible says, then for many locations there’s a lot of groups that think you should not have a state license to be able to oversee adoptions because it’s restrictive, it’s abusive, etc. etc., if you believe in traditional marriage and genders, then you are a problem.

Fortunately, in Oklahoma, Governor Fallin signed a piece of legislation that says, “Nope, faith based organizations can continue to perform adoptions and can continue to keep their faith at the center of what they do.” And ultimately one of the things that is recognized even in these comments coming from Alliance Defending Freedom is that the most beneficial thing is that you have the most agencies possible helping to get the most kids in need placed as possible. And so the idea that people want to restrict who actually can help children get adopted, or to shut down some of these agencies who are helping get children placed in homes, is kind of ridiculous.

But this is good news that Governor Fallin said, “Nope, organizations of faith can operate, can do adoptions, can do placements, and can still keep their convictions and their faith.” So, it again is good news coming out of Oklahoma.

Rick:

Alright, several pieces of good news there. We’re going take a quick break. David Barton next with some good news. Stay with us, folks. You’re listening to WallBuilders Live.

Rick:

Welcome back. Thanks for staying with us on WallBuilders Live on this Good News Friday. David Barton’s got our next piece of good news – David?

David:

What I’ve got is a report on the coverage concerning the Trump administration by mainstream media. This report covers January the 1st through April the 30th. It’s on the evening news as it appears on ABC, CBS, and NBC. So, the three big primetime news broadcasts in the evening, their coverage of the Trump administration. In that period of time there is, oh my goodness, it looks like they put 684 broadcast minutes into coverage scandals, controversies, and 807 minutes into covering the policy issues related to Trump.

Media Report on the Trump Administration

David:

So, all of that put together, that’s a whole lot of airtime. We’re talking hours, and hours, and hours, and hours, and hours, when all that’s put together. And by the way, on covering the policy issues it’s looking at issues like immigration, what’s happening with the economy, North Korea, what’s going on in Syria, Middle East, gun rights, etc. So, when you take those issues and take all the stuff with the Trump administration, Rick, Tim, what percentage do you think was positive and negative?

Rick:

Man, I’m going to– obviously mostly negative, but how bad? Seventy five/twenty five.

Tim:

Now, does this include e-mail, does it include media outlets online?

David:

No, this is only ABC, CBS, NBC, the night time news broadcast – just those three.

Tim:

So, if it’s just those and just what was aired on TV, I’m going to say it’s like ninety six percent negative.

David:

Well, close. It is, overall, 90 percent negative. And the top three scandals that were covered, obviously, would be the Russia investigation, collusion investigation.

Tim:

I already want to pause and say, wait a second, what was that 10 percent positive they covered?

David:

Yeah.

Tim:

Because I really– not that I watch that much nightly news and TV, but I just can’t imagine there were things they went, “Wow, President Trump well done. Good job, sir.”

What Was the Positive Coverage?

David:

Well, actually, one third of the coverage on North Korea was positive. Because you’ve got North Korea now blowing up some of their nuclear facilities.

Tim:

Wait a second, only one third of North Korea.

David:

That’s right.

Tim:

Okay, that is already ridiculous.

David:

You get North Korea and South Korea to the table for the first time since 1948 and only one third of the coverage is good.

Tim:

What are you reporting negatively on that? I can’t even imagine. North and South Korea are reaching peace agreements. North Korea is giving up their nuclear weapons program. What is the negative? Oh yeah, I don’t even understand.

Rick:

Trump was rude somehow in the way he brought that together I’m sure.

Tim:

Right. And by the way, not that there’s not things that we could point to with Trump and his personality, his character, his tweets. We can find negative things to talk about. So, I’m not pretending that there’s not something negative you could cover. But in North Korea, in this headline story, this is where I don’t– there’s no way that 60 whatever percent is negative from this story. That is ridiculous.

David:

Well, you take the economy and the federal government now has the largest income at any point in our history, the largest income its had. We had the tax cuts, it’s now affecting people’s income. So, the personal income is up, the government’s income is up even with the tax cuts. The unemployment rate is down. Huge growth in economic output. And with all of the economic news 71 percent of it was still negative.

Finding a Storm Where There is No Storm

David:

So, they managed to find a storm where there is no storm. And speaking of storm, Stormy Daniels was obviously a lot of the coverage as well. So, they’ve got all this negative coverage. Now, so, and by the way, it was also throughout the entire year of 2017, the coverage was 90 percent negative for the entire year. And so now in the first four months of 2018 it is still 90 percent negative coverage. So, what’s the good news?

Tim:

That they’re not doing well as a network?

David:

Well, that’s true, they’re not.

Rick:

And it’s not working on the American people.

David:

The support for Trump is now the highest that it’s been in his administration. So, 90 percent of news is negative and the support for Trump is going up. So, people are clearly either seeing through or tuning out whatever it is. But that’s amazing that with a 90 percent barrage of negative stuff the numbers are going up.

Tim:

Yeah, there’s a reason that fake news becomes a trending hashtag because of some of this ridiculous stuff. And obviously, we appreciate the news media, right? We arguably are part of that system, we are reporting things, we are trying to keep people informed. But in the midst of it, the fact that we cannot look and have moral clarity to go, hey, even though we might not like this individual this is a really good thing. There’s just so much bias in the media it is so ridiculous. But it’s interesting, and I guess in this case good news, the media is not having the impact they desire to have on some of these situations. So, I guess that is good news.

David:

Well, and with that framework, where is the highest support for Trump coming from? Of those who support Trump, what demographic, what segment, has the highest support?

The Most Supportive Group?

Rick:

Meaning like age, or part of the country?

Tim:

Yeah, are we talking like blue collar workers–

David:

You name it.

Tim:

–or independents, moderates.

David:

What do you think is the group that supports him most?

Rick:

Yes.

Tim:

Yeah, well, so I would guess it’s not the far right, it’s not the far left, it’s generally people that are kind of the softer middle.

Rick:

Yeah.

Tim:

Because you still have those on the right, the really conservatives, that see some what he does and goes, “We don’t like it.” Obviously, the far left, they don’t like anything he does no matter what he does. And so I would think it’s probably going to be a lot of those in the middle that show strong support. Because they see the economy turning around, because they see trade, because they see things that actually impact their pocketbooks.

Christian Support for Trump at an All Time High

David:

And part of that is the middle on the pro-life issue. He has high support for all pro-life people – Democrat, Republican, whatever. He’s very clearly the most pro-life president in our lifetime. So, he has huge support for pro-life. The other group where he has really high support is among Christians. The Christian support for Trump is at an all time high. It’s never been as high as it is now. Seventy five percent of all Christians support Trump. And that’s amazing because Stormy Daniels and all the other stuff that goes with it. They’ve kept alive the scandal, scandal, scandal, and yet Christian support for him has been increasing.

So, they’re seeing things like the pro-life, they’re seeing things what he’s doing with judges, with Israel, what he’s doing with the military, so many things. And so those two groups – pro-life people and Christian folks – highest support that Trump has.

Rick:

Alright, guys, quick break. We’ll come back with some more good news. Stay with us. You’re listening to WallBuilders Live.

If you want to know more about our nation, our religious liberties, our freedom, our spiritual heritage, this is a trip you want to be a part of.

Moment From American History

This is Tim Barton with another moment from American history. The Second Amendment to the Constitution, which guarantees to every individual the right to keep and bear arms, has been targeted for years now by those who are determined to dismantle the individual right to self protection.

Opponents argue that, “Only the militia, the military, and law enforcement are to have and use firearms.” But those who wrote the Second Amendment strenuously disagreed, including Founding Father Richard Henry Lee, a signer of the declaration, a president of the Continental Congress, and one of those who actually framed the Second Amendment.

He declared, “To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them.”

For more information about Richard Henry Lee and the history of the Second Amendment go to WallBuilders.com.

Rick:

We’re back on WallBuilders Live on Good News Friday. Thanks for staying with us. Tim Barton up next with some good news – Tim?

Tim:

Alright, guys, this one’s coming out of California. This is from a homeowner’s association situation that came from a retirement community. And it was a community known as Solera at Kern Canyon in Bakersfield. And what happened is, at this– now again, this is a retirement community. So, presumably you have more elderly people that are there.

And it was related to there was a Bible study that was told they could not continue to meet and have these Christian meetings, have any kind of services, have Bible studies at the centers because there was one atheist who complained and said, wait a second, people of faith should not be allowed to use a community center even though if you’re at a retirement community, right, you’re paying to utilize the facilities. Obviously, these are elderly people. No one is coercing them to go and be a part, right. No– it’s just it’s kind of ridiculous this idea, but the homeowners association decided, okay, we just won’t let people use it, you can’t utilize that facility.

One Person

Tim:

And so the Pacific Justice Institute got involved and the short of it is that now faith organizations are able to use the community center again. So, it’s good news coming out of California. But a couple of interesting thoughts on this as I read it. First of all, they do highlight it was a single complaint. So, it’s just one individual, which so often we see this is not a community that is being offended – this is one individual who makes a stink.

And then people, instead of going, “Wait a second, there are more than a hundred weekly attendees at four different meetings.”, which is what this article points out. Instead of recognizing the rights of the 100, we’re going to say, “Hey, this is one person that got upset, that got offended, therefore none of you hundred get to utilize a facility anymore.” It’s good news seeing it shifted.

But it’s interesting the impact that one has and how much that oftentimes people acquiesce when someone claims they’re offended. I wonder if more christians just started claiming we were offended if it would help. And then of course, probably not because they would say, “Well, you’re Christians and we don’t care if you’re offended or not.”

But at least there’s good news coming out of California in this situation. And kudos to Pacific Justice Institute for getting involved and helping bring resolution so they can once again have these religious meetings and Bible studies back in this community center. Where again, if you’re in a homeowner’s association, right, you’re paying to be there, you’re helping fund the community center, this retirement community. It’s all adult, so it’s just kind of a ridiculous case. So, really good news they were able to win this and these hundred plus people are able to once again hold their religious services at the community center.

Not So Much the Good News But Where it Comes From

Rick:

I think one of the surprising things on our Good News Friday programs is not so much that there is good news, but where it comes from. How many, I mean, we’ve done quite a few on California, Massachusetts, some the more obviously liberal states where there are good things happening even in those states. I think that’s why folks love this part of our program so much. In fact, several of the messages over the last few weeks, Judy sent in and said, “I love your programs, especially Good News Friday. Thank you so much.” We have one from Julie says, “I listen your podcast when I have time and enjoy what you have to say. I especially like Good News Fridays.”

And then this one’s from William, he said, “I just got to say I love you guys’ show and the wealth of information I learn every day. I’m 26, two young kids and one on the way. I say this because my role in my family as a spiritual leader. I want to be active in my kids education, and learn what made our country great, and possibly learn how to run for school board position, so I can influence my kids education and education of my community.”

Trump Administration Keeps Getting Better And Better

Rick:

That’s what we’re accomplishing here at WallBuilders Live. I love hearing e-mails and encouragement from folks, listeners just like you out there that are listening right now. Help spread the word, get more people listening to this program, and getting that kind of inspiration and education, so that they can help save our constitutional republic. You can share the program on Facebook, and Twitter, and all your other social media tools.

And then you can also help us spread the program by coming alongside us and being a financial partner.
