Welcome

Rick:

Welcome to the intersection of faith and the culture.  This is WallBuilders Live! We’re glad you’re with us today where we’re talking about some of today’s hottest topics on policy, faith, and the culture, all from a Biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective.

You found us on a Friday.  That’s Good News Friday around here at WallBuilders Live! David and Tim Barton have been piling up some good news over the last few weeks to share with our audience.

David Barton, founder of WallBuilders and America’s premier historian. Tim Barton, national speaker, and pastor. Guys, I always look forward to Good News Friday. Gives me a little pick me up, get me through the next week.

Knowing that when we get involved we can make a difference. In past few years,  it’s been, “Oh, little good news here, little good news there.” Now, we’re a little bit behind. We’ve got more than we can share now.

Too Much Good News To Keep Up With

David:

Yeah, we’ve got a lot, man. It’s been a real project to try to decide what to share because there’s a big stack over here of good news.

Tim:

The problem certainly becomes, as we get it it’s very relevant. But the more we get we only can share so much on our program. So, we’ve got stuff going back to last year. We just haven’t had time to share yet but it’s because there’s so much!

So, this is a great problem to have. It is a problem, but it’s a great problem because there really are so many positive things happening.

David:

Yeah, the good news is we’re having trouble trying to figure out how much good news to share in one program because there’s so much.

Rick:

It really does feel like a pivot year. It’s like, all of a sudden, instead of having us look for good news, it’s piling up you’ve got to choose.

David:

Well, I would not have predicted that back to back six months ago. I don’t think even Trump’s supporters would have predicted this much, this fast. It’s absolutely amazing.

Rick:

Well, who wants to go first? David or Tim?

Where Are They Now

Tim:

Well, let me let me read one of these. At this point, it’s about two months old but it really is one of the fun things.  It’s a, “Where are they now?” article and it’s looking at all the people that said they were leaving if Trump became president.

These are really fun. Jon Stewart said that he was going to another planet.  Where is he now? Still on earth.  It just goes through the list of these people. One of the fun ones, Al Sharpton said, “If Trump gets elected, I’m outta here.” And where is he now? Well given that he is appearing in protests and speaking on news, so he is still here. It’s just kind of a fun article.

David:

Pick some of the others.

Tim:

Ok, so you have Spike Lee who said that “I’m leaving Brooklyn.” And actually, he’s still in Brooklyn. You have Samuel L. Jackson who said he’s headed to South Africa.  And they’re not entirely sure where he’s living but based on his tweets he’s still somewhere in the US. Cher said that she’s headed to Jupiter.  But she’s not at Jupiter because she was at the women’s march that happened right after the inauguration in D.C. Barbra Streisand was going either to Australia or Canada. And she has not moved to either Australia or Canada.

The Left Is Throwing A Temper Tantrum

Rick:

Maybe that women’s march was another final tour of both of them. I don’t know. We keep getting more of those.

Tim:

Well, yeah, the list keeps going. People that were very frustrated and basically just big kids throwing temper tantrums because they didn’t get their way and, “I’m, you know, going to hold my breath until you give me what I want.”

And we’re the laughing parent going, “Great kid, hold your breath. That’ll really teach me.” This is kind of the scenario.  But it really is just kind of fun stuff. The good news is, America is surviving now. Probably would have been a Better News Friday had they all kept their word and gone to those places better.

Rick:

That’s good, Better News Friday.

Tim:

Probably would have helped the nation even more. A whole list of stuff, just fun.  We’re talking about the Good News Friday. But maybe that’s not good news because they’re all still here, but nonetheless kind of fun and worth talking about.

Rick:

Exactly right. It is like little kids holding their breath. Their responses have been laughable. I think about eight years ago when we were on the other side of this, we’re going, “Man, we know what this guy’s going to do and it’s the opposite of what we believe in.” We got organized.

I mean, the Tea Party came out of it. Churches got involved.  People said, “Hey, we’re going to exercise our constitutional rights and get involved.  We realize what’s going to happen here. And the other side may begin to do more of that but right now it’s just temper tantrum time.

Trump Administration Making Quick Progress

Tim:

What’s significant about that Rick, is what we did on the other side is we said, “Hey, let’s figure out how the system works and let’s work the system. Let’s figure out what do we have to do?”

As opposed to, “Hey, let’s get angry and throw rocks and break things.” So there is a significant difference. If you if you want something to go the right way figure out how it works and make it work. Don’t just get angry and throw a temper tantrum, like we’re talking about, holding your breath.

But it is too, a night and day difference, two very different approaches to how you solve problems. And this is where we’re not the ones that advocate, “Hey, let’s protest. Let’s riot. Let’s do these things.”

No, “Let’s get involved to make a difference.” And this is why you see the nation going a very different direction. Even as we’re talking right now, there’s so much good news because people realized, “Hey, let’s get involved and fix this thing.” And that’s what’s starting to happen.

Rick:

The Left is definitely back on their heels right now. And not just because Trump won, but he’s doing what we’ve wanted Republicans to do for years, and that is, take action, boldly move. Press the advantage. Don’t just tinker around. Just like Obama did when he came in, the Left, man, they went after everything. And we were kind of like David, you used to say was, “Whack a mole.” We couldn’t even keep up with all the stuff they were doing.

And I’m just thrilled to see the Trump administration doing the same thing saying, “Hey, were guns blazing, we’re going forward on all fronts. Our forward motion right now is going to be to break.

We’ll be right back.  Stay with us.  We’ve got a lot of good news coming from David and Tim Barton when we come back right here on WallBuilders  Live.

They Have Been Breaking The Law For Years

Rick:

Welcome back! Good News Friday today on WallBuilders Live. David and Tim Barton have got a lot to share with us. Who’s up?

David:

I’m up. We talked about some of those Hollywood kind of folks and media personalities and others. And they haven’t left the country and they actually showed up the day after the inauguration to protest what Trump was going to do.

From their viewpoint, they probably had good reason to protest, because among the other many good things he’s done is he has reversed what’s called the “Mexico City policy.” Federal law says, “You are not to spend U.S. taxpayer dollars overseas to promote abortion or do abortions overseas.” And of course, Obama ignored that and did that.

Tim:

Let me pause, we have a law that says that?

David:

I’m sorry, we don’t deal with laws anymore, do we?

Tim:

I’m just thinking I haven’t heard about this law in years. In fact, I would have assumed that that law wasn’t even in existence just based on the policy of what we’ve been doing. So that’s really interesting to me because if there’s a law in place it makes me wonder, “Why in the world didn’t Congress go, ‘Hey, you can’t do that, that’s against the law.” Why didn’t some judge say, “Hey, that’s unconstitutional, you’re violating the law.” This is very interesting to me.

Mexico City Policy

David:

Well, we’re back to now using that law. Trump has got it back in place, his executive order is based on that. And it was something that came in under Reagan actually, back in the 80’s.

It’s gone back and forth.  Democrats choose to ignore it and not do it.  They want to promote abortion overseas. Hillary had a women’s global initiative when she was the secretary of state and that was designed to promote abortion overseas and promote homosexuality overseas.

We saw the State Department not giving State Department monies to nations who would not put abortion and homosexual marriage in their constitution. So, it’s crazy. And so does this and you can imagine what the outcry has been. I mean, you’ve seen it out of Hollywood, “We are a very, very divided nation.” Uh, not true. 80%  of Americans support the Mexico City policy.  The Mexico City policy is the name of the policy which says, “You cannot use American dollars to pay for abortions over seas.” Over 80%  of Americans, grab this– 74%  of pro-choice Americans support not using American tax dollars to pay for abortions overseas.

So that’s how far out some of these Hollywood guys are when they were protesting this at the women’s march. 74%  pro-abortion Americans say, “You shouldn’t be paying for abortions overseas.”

Antonin Scalia’s Double

Rick:

And yet, we had a president that was ignoring not only the law but what the American people want to have done. Now, this new president immediately, that was the first day wasn’t it?

David:

That was in the first two or three days, I’ve forgotten the order.

Rick:

It might have been that following Monday.

David:

It was quick.  It was real quick.

Rick:

That was a great sign to the Pro-lifers, to Conservatives, to the people that wanted the law to be followed, that right off the bat that was one of the first things he chose to do.

Tim:

Let me just make sure understood this.  It was 74%  of those that were pro-choice and 80%  of all Americans?

David:

That’s right.

Tim:

Interesting that the numbers are 80%  because I’ve got a news article from January. I mentioned we’ve had so much in our stack we couldn’t get to it all every week. So this one is a little bit dated.

But it’s interesting, because of this poll, the Amirs poll, that 80%  of Americans, it seems like that maybe the same 80%  that you were talking about in your poll, 80%  of Americans wanted a Supreme Court justice whose views on the Constitution were just like Antonin Scalia.

Now, what’s interesting about that is Scalia was a major pro-life guy.

David:

80%  of the nation? That means even Democrats and independents want a Scalia guy.

The GOP Platform Really Does Make A Difference

Tim:

Isn’t that interesting? Now, certainly, there could be initially there was only a few points margin of error in this poll. But as our good friend George Barna says sometimes polls aren’t the best indicator because you can almost get a poll to mean whatever you want by the way you asked the questions.

However, this is significant because as we’re talking about Good News Friday.  Not only was it good news that Americans wanted a Supreme Court justice like Scalia, it’s now great news that this new potential judge we have for the Supreme Court is being really talked about like he’s almost a identical of this Antonin Scalia.  They’re saying, “Hey, his policies are just like he’s a duplicate of an Antonin Scalia here on the U.S. Supreme Court.”

So, really good news on a lot of fronts. Americans wanted that kind of justice. And great news that President Trump looks like is nominating someone who will be that kind of justice.

David:

And what we’re talking about percentages, we’re going 80%, this one is not 80%  but it’s still high. This also is now dated, but it’s it’s pretty cool because it shows how much process also involves this.

But when you go back and look at the voters who voted for Trump, there certainly were voters in a whole lot of states that were not expected to vote for Trump, which was Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, or etc. You look at those states, what this survey shows is now after the fact, 60%  of Trump voters voted for him because of the GOP platform.

A Validation Of Philosophy

Now think about that, that’s pretty amazing that people actually read the platform and said, “Hey, this guy represents the platform and the platform is pro-life, pro-family, and it’s pro-Constitution.”

So, it’s kind of cool because we do a lot of the platform work, “Does this make any difference?” Yes, it does. We know that it does. Eighty-nine % of Congress votes according to the platform of the Republican Party, 73 % of Congress votes according to the platform of the Democrat Party.

That’s probably because the Democrat Party is a whole lot more conservative than Democrats in Congress are.

Tim:

Democrats are 73%  of the time voting with their platform?

David:

Right.

Tim:

And Republicans in Congress, what percentage are voting?

David:

Eighty-nine percent.

Eighty-nine percent, so if you are electing a Democrat Representative or a Republican Representative, really, if you look at the platform, you can pretty much know with a 73 % certainty or an 89 % certainty, if you elect one of them they’re going to be voting based on whatever the platform says.

Rick:

A validation of philosophy.

Wishy Washy On Their Beliefs

David:

That’s it, a great validation. You want to know what do they stand for? What do they believe? Well, go read the platform of the party they represent because if they’re Democrats 73 % the time their vote when the platform says, Republican 89 % of time voting with what the platform says.

David:

And I would argue that they vote more than that because the Democrat platform is pretty pro-Israel, but their voting record is not. So, even the fact that they vote 73 % of the time, that’s 73 % time they vote pretty liberal. It’s actually more like 90 % of the time they vote really liberal. Because the Democrats had the wisdom to not make their platform be exactly what they believe.

Tim:

Well, that is a good point. One of the things about their platform is that there’s a lot of inconsistency in it.

David:

That’s right.

Tim:

“We support Israel and we support Palestine’s right to exist and have their own nation, but we support Israel.”

David:

“The Palestines want to destroy us.”

Tim:

It’s kind of hard to say, “Hey, I support ISIS and their movement but I support the persecuted Christians also.” Well, you can’t really support them at the same time. That’s where, as you’re mentioning, they intentionally leave some leeway in their platform so whatever position they take, “Hey,  that’s what we support.” Probably, if the platform was written a little bit more specific toward their value system, then certainly they would be much more accurate because there are even more liberal than sometimes with the platform says.

The Unequivocal Difference

David:

Well, we were at that Republican platform, unequivocal on values. What we said about family, marriage, and sexual identity, about the Constitution what we said about religious liberty, religious freedom, we are unequivocal. There’s no misinterpretation of that.

The fact that 89 % of elected officials in Congress voted according to the platform. And the fact that 60 % of voters who voted for Trump said that they were influenced by what the platform said. That’s that’s significant stuff.

Rick:

Going to take a quick break. We’ve got more good news coming at you when we come back. Stay with us.  You’re listening to WallBuilders Live!

Moment From American History

This is Tim Barton from WallBuilders with another moment in American history. America is a special and unique nation. The average length for a constitution and other countries is only 17 years. But we’ve had ours for over two centuries.

Our 4 %  of the world’s population produces 24 %  of the world’s gross domestic product and every year we produce more inventions and technology and the other 96 % of the world combined.

In 1831 Alexis Tocqueville of France came to America traveled the country, and in his famous book, Democracy in America reported, “The position of the Americans is, therefore, quite exceptional. It may be believed that no Democratic people will ever be placed in a similar one.”

This is the origin of the phrase American exceptionalism and affirms that America is unique because of the distinctive ideas on which we’ve been based, including inalienable. Individuals and limited government and the importance of religion and morality. For more information about American exceptionalism go to WallBuilders.com.

It’s Your Right

Rick:

Welcome back to WallBuilders Live.  It’s Good News Friday today. We’re sharing some good news with you from around the nation and sometimes around the world. Some of these issues there we go, and some other issues around the world. But I’m not sure where we’re headed.  So, David, Tim, what’s next on our Good News list?

Tim:

This one is really something that is a national issue. There is a piece of legislation that was brought before Congress by a congressman from North Carolina. His name is Richard Hudson, and this is really kind of on behalf of Gun Owners of America.

Gun Owners of America is a little bit like the NRA except they do a little bit more related to concealed weapons as what it seems to indicate from this article at least. And what this bill that Congressman Richard Hudson presented was the right that if you have a concealed weapon in one state of full reciprocity in the other states.

He points to times when someone had had a gun in their state.  They’re traveling through another state.  They got pulled over they announce they have a gun and they’re going to jail.  They’re getting arrested.  They’re getting fined because, “You’re not allowed to have a gun in our state, because there is not full reciprocity.”

And what he points out is that means that you’re not able to defend yourself and your family in the United States if you are in certain states. And so he’s trying to pass legislation, put this forward, that this is something that we want to have remedied in America.

Oh, The Irony

So this really is good news, that someone with common sense is going. “Wait a second. We want to allow people to protect and defend themselves, their family, their children, whatever state they are in. And if they’ve had the training to get a handgun license, whether it’s concealed or open carry, whatever it is, if you’ve had the training that’s something that other states ought to recognize.”

I can tell you, in Texas, we accept everybody’s training or their concealed handgun license whatever handgun license they have. We embrace that. “Hey, you’re welcome to have ‘em in Texas, and in Texas, we’re not scared of guns.”

But there’s other states that have very different standards. And I will also point out that Texas has more rigorous standards to get a concealed license or a handgun license, a right to carry license than most other states do. And yet, we still allow other states that have less strenuous measurements of being able to obtain a license to still come to Texas because we’re not scared of that. We believe people should have a right to defend themselves.

Rick:

It is crazy, because like some states like Washington, where it’s very easy to get a handgun license do not recognize, our difficult to get a license here in Texas. And yet, we recognize their very easy to get, you know, walk in to get your license situation.

So that reciprocity, we need that. And frankly, constitutionally, your Second Amendment right, and the right to be able to travel to other states and still have your rights. It just makes sense.

Be Knowledgeable And Prepared, It’s Your Duty

David:

By the way Richard, Congressman Hudson, a great guy. He’s a really, really good guy, a good friend.  He’s terrific. North Carolina’s got a good congressman there. What’s interesting is, what his bill does is simply say, “Oh, I believe in the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment gives across the nation the inalienable right, it doesn’t give– it just protects, the inalienable little right that God gave us to defend ourselves.”

You have some states,  “I don’t care what God gave you. I’m not going to let you defend yourself.” And so all this bill does is actually what the Second Amendment is designed to do, and that’s give that protection.

Tim:

And guys, let me throw out too, one of the things that many people argue with the Second Amendment is that “Everybody should be able to carry a gun, no matter what, no matter when, no matter how.” And although I do believe when the Second Amendment was written there was a lot of that involved. However, at the time of the Second Amendment, you also had very strong families and there was a lot of training involved.

So, every kid learned from their father growing up how to use a firearm. So, one of the things that is is lost in much of culture today is even basic understanding of firearms, where if you understand the function the operation of a firearm you’re much less likely to have any kind of gun “accident” because you understand that guns are dangerous.  You understand you don’t pointed at something you’re not wanting to destroy.

PE Classes In The Past Were Much Different Than Now

But this is something that we’ve even lost in America. So, I think one of the things that were probably very good to do is that for everyone who owns a gun you ought to just go to your local gun store and get a proficiency class.

I’m not saying required because I can just hear libertarians right now screaming at me, “How dare you say there’s requirements to own guns!” There should be some level of, “Hey, just know how it functions, know how to operate it, how to  clean and clear, how to shoot.”

This is something that used to be done in the family, it used to be fathers were teaching their sons, fathers were teaching their daughters, and there’s just not as much of that anymore. I think every American should know how to use and operate a firearm.

Maybe we go back to public schools because we used to teach that at public schools. So, maybe now it’s an education thing. But that’s something that I would be interested to see if we can resolve that problem.

David:

That’s something I was going to point out is people come through tours here at the library museum that we have at WallBuilders. One of the books that Tim pulls out is a textbook from the 1950s and 1960s where shows in public schools, as part of the PE class, all the parts of guns, how to use the gun, how to create an indoor shooting range in your own house for guns.

Tim:

So you can practice at home.

It Used To Be So Normal

David:

This is public school PE class. Tim and I both recently spoke at a college and doing the classes there, part of it we cover Second Amendment and John Quincy Adams says, “Look, when you have accidents with guns and kids it’s not because kids don’t know that guns are dangerous, it’s  because they don’t know how to handle the guns.”

So you need that training to know. It does not bother me at all to require training and education with guns, not in the least, because that doesn’t keep you from getting a gun. We’re not prohibiting you from getting a gun or defending yourself.

We’re just saying, the culture is different now, and parents don’t train their kids like this. I mean, in my case, I’ve pointed out before that I won at church for a Bible memorization contest and for inviting the most people to church, the church gave me a gun.

Now, you’re not going to see that today. That’s what I got, and that was a youth group. I think I was 11 at the time, and they gave an 11-year-old a gun for Bible memorization. And so Tim and I still do that. We’ll tell youth pastor-

Tim:

And it wasn’t a BB gun by the way. It was a rifle.

It’s Your Duty To Protect Your Family

David:

Ithaca model 49 single shot lever action 22. I can still tell you all about it. It is a cool gun but it was a rifle. So, Tim and I still the youth pastors today, “If you get your kids in a Bible memory contest, we’ll give them a gun and actually will show them how to use it.”

Tim:

And I did that as a youth pastor. I had a contest and the year I gave away a gun I said, “Whoever memorizes the book of James first.” Had 35 kids working to memorize the book of James and I gave away prizes for first, second, and third.

We value the word of God and getting it in students, but also we’re not scared of someone having a gun. And, the one that got a gun I took him out to our ranch and we had several days of training. And so he was pretty proficient with it when we finished.

But it’s something certainly that we don’t teach nearly what we used to in education or even in parenting and probably be good to get back to.

Rick:

And Tim, I would just add, not only the training for the safety issue but let’s face it, I mean there is evil in the world and I especially would speak to the men right now. There’s fathers and husbands, women as well. But I’m just saying, there’s a need to be trained and ready to defend your family, not just in your home but when you’re outside your home, as well. It’s a responsibility that we have.

And David, of course, there’s a great quote by James Wilson who was on the Supreme Court signed both Founding documents who said, “You get robbed in your house,  it’s your fault because you weren’t prepared to defend your home.” And that’s part of where that castle doctrine comes from.

Pro-Life

It’s not just safety, it’s really a responsibility, that folks be ready to defend themselves against evil, should you have to come face to face with it. And there’s more than a million incidences like that in our country every year. So it’s out there, be ready for it, be trained and there’s lots of great teachers and trainers out there.

Just like Tim said, go to your local gun store and ask them, “Where can I get some proficiency classes, some handgun defense classes?”

And be ready.  We want to encourage everybody, and certainly encourage supporters of this bill as well.  In fact, we’re going to have Eric Pratt on the program next week to talk a little bit more about it. We’ve got just a couple minutes left, guys.  What are the good news you got?

David:

I’m going to jump over to another pro-life issue here. We start with pro-life, we’ll come back to pro-life.

Tim:

And by the way, the gun issue is still pro-life.

David:

That’s pro-life.

Tim:

So, we’re just carrying on with this pro-life idea.

David:

We have a pro-life program today. This part is kind of mopping up some previous things. If you remember back two years ago when the videos came out exposing Planned Parenthood where one of the clinics that was selling aborted baby parts and that is a violation of federal law. It was a clinic down in the Houston area.

They referred it to the to the D.A. down there and in Houston. And so the D.A. looks at all the evidence and what does she do? She indites the guy who made the video, not the Planned Parenthood clinic selling it.

They Cleaned House

This is just a mop up from the end of the year. What happened was that D.A. was resounding defeated, and by the way, the court throughout the indictment of David Daleiden who did the videos, not only did she get defeated but the new DA came in threw every body out of her office. Everybody that had anything to do with that in any way, shape, or fashion they’re gone.

So they came in and cleaned house from top to bottom. And that’s in Houston, which is a very blue part of the state of Texas as far as voting goes. I mean, even in Houston, that was over the top.

So, a new D.A. in Houston, and a new staff there, a whole new day in Houston, and again elections have consequences. And that’s one of them, and that’s good news.

Rick:

Good news across the board guys! Thanks for sharing so much with us. I know you’ve got a lot more on your stack. We’ll get to more good news on our future Friday programs.
