Faith And The Culture

Rick:

Welcome to the intersection of faith and the culture. This is WallBuilders Live! Where we”€™re talking about the day”€™s hottest topics on policy, faith, and the culture. Always from a biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective.

Today is Good News Friday. I love fridays around here because David and Tim Barton share a lot of good news that’s been stacking up in their pile for the last week or two and we haven’t had a chance to get to yet. And I love hearing this good news. It encourages me, lets me know that the system works if we will work the system. And I bet you can use that same encouragement as well.

So, David Barton is going to share some. He’s America’s premier historian and our founder here at WallBuilders. Tim’s going to share some. Tim Barton is the president of WallBuilders and a national speaker and pastor. My name is Rick Green, I’m a former Texas legislator and my job is to just keep us running on time. So, these guys have more good news than we can share, but we’re going to get as much of it in as we possibly can.

If you want more, go to WallBuildersLive.com, click on that archive section, and you can get some of those past Friday programs.

David, Tim, I’m ready to dive in. Who’s going first with some good news?

David:

I’ve got it first, Rick.

Rick:

Alright, Dave, go ahead.

David:

I have a report here about abortion deserts. Do you guys know what an abortion desert is?

Abortion Deserts

Rick:

Abortion desert”€¦

Tim:

I know what a desert is, I know what an abortion is, and it doesn’t seem like those two terms go together. Abortions–

Rick:

I”€™m hoping it’s like a desert of state area, or states, where they can’t go get an abortion.

Tim:

Yes. So, a barren dry land where you can’t have an abortion.

David:

Yeah, that that would be it. And this is a report on the top 27 abortion deserts in the United States. And abortion desert means there are no abortion facilities in that city and the closest abortion facilities are over 100 miles away. So, you have to go a long way to get an abortion in those cities. And this is the list of the 27 cities, the top abortion deserts in the United States. And it was put out by that bastion of conservative thinking – The University of California, San Francisco.

Rick:

Right. Right. Yeah.

David:

Oh, wait a minute, maybe that was not a bastion of conservative thinking. Ummm…

Tim:

I think they probably released this with different intentions.

David:

Well, when they’re the ones that come up with the title “€œabortion desert”€ you know that they think abortion is a good deal. That it”€™s really bad to have a city where abortions more than 100 miles away there’s no abortion. So, what do you think is the largest city in the United States and I’ll help you out here.

Tim:

What is the largest city? Because that might be a different question.

The Largest in the U.S.?

David:

Let me finish that. What’s the largest city in the United States that is an abortion desert and it’s a city of 300-24000 people. No abortion facilities in the city and it’s more than 100 miles the closest abortion facility.

Tim:

Well–

Rick:

Hmmm.

Tim:

–will you give us the state?

David:

Texas.

Rick:

Really.

Tim:

Interesting.

Rick:

Tim:

Yeah, 325 thousand.

Rick:

So, not Dallas, not Houston–

Tim:

Can’t be Fort Worth.

Rick:

Not San Antonio.

Time for a Guessing Game

David:

It can”€™t be within 100 miles of those cities.

Rick:

Not Austin.

Tim:

Interesting.

Rick:

So, it’s got to be Lubbock. No, Lubbock”€™s not that big. Not San Angelo, that”€™s about 150,000. You got me, man. I’m…okay, wait,

Tim:

Abilene.

Rick:

Waco. Yeah, Abilene.

David:

No, Abilene and Waco are not big enough.

Tim:

Okay, it was * close.

David:

It was not.

Tim:

Man.

David:

Not even the right part.

Rick:

325, that’s got to be like Beaumont maybe.

David:

It”€™s Corpus Christi.

Rick:

Corpus Christi.

It Helps When You Have the Ocean on One Side

Tim:

Okay.

David:

Corpus Christi.

Tim:

I guess it helps when you have the ocean on one side.

David:

Well, yeah, it”€™s 100 miles. You have to go to another continent to get abortions over there.

Rick:

My brain cut out any coastal place because you said desert.

David:

Yeah, well that’s their pejorative term. So, Corpus Christi is the largest city in the United States with no abortion facilities and more than 100 miles to the nearest one. The next largest city is Fort Wayne, Indiana with 260,000. The next three cities, so the top five, four of the five cities are in Texas. So–

Tim:

Wow.

David:

–the first is Corpus Christi. Then you go to Fort Wayne, Indiana. Then you come back to Laredo, Lubbock, and Amarillo. Those are the top five abortion deserts in the United States and Texas.

Tim:

Wow. Well done, Texas.

Rick:

No kidding.

Tim:

Good job, you guys.

David:

And well done for all of the other 22 cities that made the list as well.

An Even More Impressive List

Tim:

For sure. And that”€™s one of the things we’ve talked about so often on Good News Friday is all the progress we’re seeing in states that are passing legislation to minimize, to eliminate, abortions in their state. And so, at this point, we’re saying places where you have to go 100 miles before you can find an abortion facility. Well, if we were just going to list all of the cities, all the locations, even some states, where there’s been heavy restrictions or where there’s some states now there’s only one or two abortion facilities left, we really could make this an even more impressive list.

Nonetheless, this is just more of that good news on the pro-life front.

Rick:

Yeah, good victories that have been a long time coming. So, for that desert to exist that means there were victories not even last year, two years ago, five years ago. That’s been a lot of work of a lot of people involved in the pro-life movement that we’re now seeing the fruit of that labor.

Quick break, guys. We”€™ve got more good news when we come back. Stay with us. Tim Barton up next. You’re listening to WallBuilders Live.

A Moment From American History

This is Tim Barton from WallBuilders with another moment from American history. Too often today history education excludes great black heroes from the American founding. Such as Lemuel Haynes.

Haynes, though abandoned as a baby, pioneered churches across upper New England. He became the first black American to pastor a white congregation, to receive an honorary master’s degree, and to be ordained by a mainstream Christian denomination, The Congregationalist.

He was a soldier during the American Revolution and in his churches on George Washington’s birthday he regularly preached sermons honoring George Washington. Even late in his life he expressed his willingness to go back to battle if necessary to protect America, which he called, “€œa sacred ark.”€

American history is filled with numerous examples of black heroes who are largely ignored by mainstream education today. For more information about Pastor Lemuel Haynes and other colonial Patriots go to WallBuilders.com.

Rick:

We’re back on WallBuilders Live. More good news for you. Tim Barton”€™s next with some good news – Tim?

Four Year Old Over the Balcony

Tim:

Alright, guys, I don’t know if y’all saw. This was something that happened on social media and it actually caught me by surprise. I saw somebody had posted this link on their Facebook page. I watched the video. There was a guy over in France and did y”€™all see, I think it was the 4 year old who is the fourth story of an apartment building, somehow got out on the balcony, and I don’t know if the 4 year old climbed over the balcony and fell, I don’t know what happened, but was hanging over the edge of the balcony. Did y”€™all see this at all?!

David:

I did not.

Rick:

I did not.

Tim:

Okay, so, there are neighbors who are out on their balcony and they cannot reach this 4 year old. And so there is a crowd gathering–

David:

How”€™s the four year old hanging on the balcony? What happened?

Tim:

From the video it was not extremely clear to me. There’s a hand up above the child, but I don’t know if like the shirts caught on something, I don’t know of the hands holding on, there was not clarity for me. But as I’m watching this video–

David:

It’s on the fourth story?

Real Live Spiderman

Tim:

On the fourth story and hanging outside of the balcony, hanging down, and you’re thinking this is really not good, this child is about to fall to their death. So, there was a crowd gathering and so there was a young man, 22 years old, who was walking by. And so I’m going to attempt the name although I’m going apologize already I’m not going to do well this, Mamadu Asama is how I’m going for this. So, he was a young man walking by, looks up– or sees a crowd first and kind of thinks, “€œWhat’s going on?”€, looks up, and sees this this kid hanging there.

And I don’t know if you guys have seen any of the TV show like American Ninja Warrior–

David:

Yeah.

Rick:

Oh yeah.

Tim:

–but they do these crazy things, and incredible muscles, and strength. So, this guy, to me, it’s like this guy goes full on like ninja– not American Ninja because he’s in France, but I guess like a French ninja warrior.

David:

So, we’re about to have a real live Spiderman here? Is that the deal?

Tim:

So, on social media, they start calling him Spiderman.

David:

I love it.

Tim:

Because he goes over to the balcony and he just starts scaling up this– and there’s, I don’t know, three four feet or something between the floor above and the balcony below, but he climbs up. And so he jumps up and grabs the next balcony, lifts himself up, and jumps, and grabs the next one. So, he gets up and he’s able to grab this baby, save this little 4 year old.

We Want You

Rick:

Wow.

Tim:

So, he actually gets– was granted French citizenship which was interesting. So, he wasn’t a citizen, but after this happens they go, “€œHey, you’re the kind of guy we want.”€

Rick:

We want you.

Tim:

Yeah, so, he actually gets to have a sit down with the president, Emmanuel Macron.

David:

If you run toward the trouble rather than away from it you can be a French citizen. That’s what they’re wanting in their country.

Tim:

Because definitely they need more of those people in France.

David:

Exactly.

Tim:

Yes, they’re trying to get over that stereotype of running away when trouble comes. So, he has a sit down with with the French president, Emmanuel Macron, and actually as he’s describing this he says, “€œI just didn’t have time to think. I ran across the road to go and save him. I just climbed up and thank God, God helped me. The more I climbed the more I had the courage to climb up higher. That’s it.”€

David:

I love it.

Just a Really Cool Story

Tim:

Well, one of the fun things at the end of it is then the fire brigade from Paris gets on social media and says, “€œHey, if you’re looking for a job you’re the kind of guy we’re looking for.”€ And so he’s granted citizenship, this job offer, and saved a baby in the process. So, just one of those stories that is just a fun good news story that we often talk about, so often we see the discouraging things, the bad things and it’s easy to turn on the news and go, oh my gosh, there’s so many problems.

But every now and then you see these stories where it just gives you hope for humanity on some level. And of course the fact he acknowledges that God helped him and, “€œThank God. And I had strength and more courage as I went.”€ So, it makes me curious what his faith background is and if he’s a Christian, or what that really looks like. Nonetheless, it’s certainly an encouraging story of someone who puts their life on the line, who’s not thinking about themselves, who’s thinking, “€œI’m going to save this child”€, goes for it, succeeds. Just a really cool story.

Rick:

Alright, great story. David, you’re up next, man.

David:

I’m going to go to one that comes out of the Department of Education in Washington D.C.. And I know it’s hard to imagine good news coming out of the federal Department of Education, but there”€™s actually good news.

Tim:

I would say it’s not as hard to imagine over the last year and a half.

David:

Exactly.

Rick:

Yes, it’s gotten easier too.

Good News From the Department of Education

David:

And that’s why it is good news. I’ll say even the headline says, “€œTrump Led Department of Education Praised”€. And what happens in this thing is the Department of Education is saying, “€œHey, we have a lot of policies that discriminate against religious colleges. We have policies that don’t let them get grants, or loans, or they can’t participate in federally funded programs.

“And last year the U.S. Supreme Court said in the Trinity Lutheran case that you can’t single out religious people and give them less benefits and less services than what you do non-religious people. So, we in the Department of Education are not going to wait for a lawsuit to get this fixed, we’re going to do this right now on our own.”

And so the Department of Education is proactively going through and revising policies and getting things in line so that if you are a religious college, and if you’re a religious university, and if you’re if you’re coming to help students have loans, or grants, or these federal programs, you’re not going to have trouble with the Federal Department of Education anymore. And that’s really good news that we’re reducing the barriers against religious people and actually starting to treat them like all other citizens rather than less than that.

Rick:

Imagine that. It almost sounds like an American concept there. Maybe we could keep that through this administration and maybe even into to the next.

Stay with us, folks. More good news. We’ll be right back on WallBuilders Live.

Pastors Only Briefing Trip

Tim:

Alright, David, Tim, who’s up next with some more good news?

Not In Tune With the Gaming Culture

Tim:

Rick I’ll jump in on this one. This is something that I am not at all an online gamer. When I was growing up there was a Nintendo. Then we got super ninte– well, we didn’t get, my cousins had a Super Nintendo. And then when I was in college, I guess it was in high school, the N64 came out and there were Mario Kart, and James Bond gold mines. So, there were a lot of fun games, but we didn’t really grow up getting to play a lot of these. We were in a 15 passenger van traveling the nation. So, a lot of the gaming culture is not something that’s intuitive for me.

However, I do understand that there’s a lot of online streaming games that happen right now. And one of the groups we’ve talked about before is the National Center on Sexual Exploitation. They work really hard to help eliminate sexual exploitation in the nation. And actually, they produce a list every year, the dirty dozen list, where they will identify groups that are not doing a good job when it comes to sexual exploitation.

So, one of the groups they pointed to was–

David:

And, by the way, they’re not doing a good job when it comes to fighting sexual exploitation. They’re looking for people who will take a position against it and not use their  businesses to promote sexual exploitation. Whether it be gratuitous sexual stuff that is often in online gaming, etc..

Tim:

Right. And so in many situations – whether it”€™s their advertising, or their business partnerships, or where their funding goes. But the National Center on Sexual Exploitation really tries to challenge businesses to stay away from any kind of graphic sexuality, or nudity, or anything, that could promote a sexual exploitation of any kind.

And so one of the things that they decided they wanted to target was this on– really kind of a major online game distributor is Stream. They are one of the largest online game distributors. And very interesting, Stream just recently contacts all of– Oh, and, guys, let me–So, totally misread this. And again, kind of reflection of the fact I’m not an online gamer. It’s not Stream, it’s Steam.

So, anybody listening that is online games like, Tim, you have no idea what you”€™re talking about.

Rolling Their Eyes

Rick:

They were rolling their eyes at you if they knew what it was.

Tim:

Yeah, they’re going, “€œTim, you have know idea what you”€™re talking about.”€ Well, that’s kind of true when it comes to online games. Yes, and I will happily acknowledge that. I am someone who I could then, at that point, say I have a life, but I won’t be rude. So, yes. Nonetheless, nonetheless, so it’s not Stream it’s Steam.

So, steam is this online game distributor and they contacted their developers and they told them, “€œYou need to remove sexually graphic content in there are games or they will be delisted from Steam’s sites.”€

Rick:

Wow.

Tim:

Which, of course, that’s a huge deal. And so the National Center on Sexual Exploitation really gives a lot of credit to the grassroots campaign where they had people for this week long campaign contacting Steam saying, “€œHey, please remove this sexually graphic content.”€ And lo and behold it worked. So, you have one of the largest distributors of online games, Steam, who’s now removing and requiring their game distributors to remove sexually graphic content.

So, really is good news. Especially, one of the things for our young people especially, parents don’t always know what young people are doing, the music they listen to, the movies they watch, the TV shows they”€™re into, the things they’re looking at on their phone or YouTube. We don’t always know and don’t always do a good job of kind of overseeing what our kids our into.

Less of That Content

Tim:

So, at least on this front the good news is this is one outlet where there will be less of that kind of content and maybe a little safer for people that are into online games. Definitely good news when it comes to this.

Rick:

It’s great news. And you guys remember a couple of years ago, and man, I wish I could remember now because we should be giving them a shout out. But one of the major hotel chains did that with the pornographic movies and stopped having them available. And we praised them on the program and said, “€œLook, they’re taking a hit in the pocketbook. There’s a lot of money to those guys and they’re willing to give that up because they know the damage it”€™s doing to the culture.”€ I would not have expected that from the gaming industry.

And I just– I know that sounds bad being negative on them and all that, but I thought totally money driven. So, for them to– for Steam to do this as well, it’s just a good sign. That’s the kind of economic leverage or push that we need to be making and encouraging, if you’ve got kids that are in the gaming world, get them to send Steam a thank you and say, “€œThank you for doing that.”€ That’s a big deal.

Tim:

There’s no doubt. And then, of course, that’s why it’s on Good News Friday–

Rick:

Yeah.

Tim:

–because this is great news.

Rick:

No doubt. Alright, guys, quick break. We’ll come back with some more good news, folks. Folks. Stay with us. You’re listening to WallBuilders Live.

Leadership Training Program

Rick:

Hey, friends! We’ve got a great program to share with you today. It”€™s the WallBuilders Leadership Training Program and it’s an opportunity for 18 to 25 year olds to come spend two weeks diving into the original documents we’re always talking about here on WallBuilders Live.

Tim, you’ve already been doing this a couple of summers and seen the results of young people coming to this program. We’re going to see more of them coming this year.

Tim:

Yeah, Rick, it”€™s something that”€™s been cool to see the transformation with young people coming in. The emphasis, for us, largely is a pursuit of truth. We have a culture that doesn’t know what truth is. We don’t know what biblical truth is, or constitutional truth, or the American heritage that we have. And so we really dive into original documents and say, “€œWell, what did they actually write? What did they actually do? Not just what did somebody say, what is actually true, and the truth is what’s transformational.

David:

Yeah, guys. This really is a remarkable opportunity. And for those who want to spend time with us and spend time in the original documents, this is a great program. So, if you’re from 18 to 25, or you know someone who’s 18 to 25, send them to sign up for one of our three sessions this summer at WallBuilders.com/leadershiptraining.

Rick:

We’re back on WallBuilders Live. Thanks for staying with us on this Good News Friday. Be sure and visit WallBuildersLive.com for more of these good news programs. David Barton is up next with some good news, David?

David:

We’re going to Colorado. We’re going to Strasburg High School in Colorado. Their logo is an Indian with a headdress on it and their motto is “€œHome of the Indians”€. You can imagine what happened with that. So, here’s the question I’ve got for you. What is their new logo? What is their new motto?

The Politically Correct World

Tim:

Well, obviously if there was some concern you know it’s not going to be an Indian anymore because that’s just offensive to have an Indian as your logo. So, maybe–

Rick:

I would think it would be even worse if they got rid of the Indian and made them the Cowboys though. Not good. Not play well in the PC world.

Tim:

That’s a good point. Yeah, they are going to need like some rainbows, or some flowers, or–

Rick:

Unicorns. You”€™re the unicorns.

Tim:

Yeah. Well, but you know that’s probably offensive to horses.

Rick:

Oh yeah, yeah.

Tim:

Umm”€¦ Yeah, I can’t imagine where this would have gone. It would sadden me to think of the frustrating possibilities. However, it’s Good News Friday. So, let me think logically, if it’s Good News Friday, there has to be a good outcome from this, so what’s the good outcome?

David:

The good outcome is they”€™re still the home of the Indians and they still have a logo of an Indian with a headdress.

Rick:

How did that happen? Because the Northern Arapaho tribe said, “€œWe’re honored that you would do that.”€

Rick:

I love it!

At Least Be the Right Kind of Indians

David:

And then the Northern Arapaho tribe actually drew the logo of the Indian with a headdress.

Rick:

I love it.

Tim:

So, the Arapahos said, “€œWait a second, if you’re going to be the Indians at least be the right kind of Indians and here’s what we look like.”€

Rick:

Yeah.

Tim:

That’s actually awesome that they would come and draw the logo and say, “€œLook, if you”€™re going to be representation, at least represent the right kind of thing.”€ That’s a really cool.

David:

I thought that was cool because the school reached out to the Indian tribe and said, “€œWe want to do this right.”€ And it wasn’t because there was a controversy kind of thing going. It’s just that I love the fact that they’re trying to talk, they’re having conversations, and both sides went at it in goodwill, and they got a good outcome of this.

We’ve seen in so many other locations, even with the Washington Redskins, that the Native American tribe came out and said, “€œNo, we’re fine with that.”€ It’s so often other people who take up an offence for people who are not offended, quite frankly. Whether it be academic professors who get offended on the behalf of people who aren”€™t offended. This story from Colorado I love because they got together and said, “€œHere’s our logo, here’s our motto. Have you guys got a problem with that? And if so, can you help us?”€ And it’s a great outcome.

Tim:

Well, yes. So, it really is a beautiful picture of this notion of, “€œLook this isn’t something that– we don’t want to be offensive with this. We want to represent the right way. Can you help us to know how to represent it the right way?”€ And actually then, “€œYeah, we’ll help you, we”€™ll come, let’s spend some time together, let’s do some things together, we’ll draw the correct perception or the correct logo of what an Indian should look like.”€ That really is a fun story that certainly is not the way most things happen today. But it’s an interesting and really fun example of the way possibly things should happen.

Rick:

Yeah. Good stuff. Alright, Tim, I think we have time to squeeze in another piece if you”€™ve got some good news.

Shocking Coming Out of California

Tim:

Absolutely. This is something that came out of California just recently. And this was one of the most shocking things that I’ve seen coming out of California. I have no idea how long, how many years, this is actually a judge from California who ruled in favor of a Christian baker not having to bake a wedding cake for a homosexual wedding.

Rick:

Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait, wait.

David:

Oh.

Rick:

California court?

David:

Oh.

Rick:

That said you don’t have to bake the cake. You actually get to not offer your gift and you’re calling to something that violates your closely held beliefs?

Decisions Coming

Tim:

Guys, I tell you, this is so fascinating because we know there are cases right now before the U.S. Supreme Court, we”€™re waiting to hear those decisions.

David:

I’m wondering if this is going to be a case that only lasts about four weeks. Because the U.S. Supreme Court, it’s highly expected they will come down on the wrong side of this issue with Jack Phillips the baker. Just, it”€™s curious, or is this guy a prophet and saying, “€œHere’s what the Supreme Court’s about to do.”€ I hope that’s it.

Tim:

Well, it certainly will be telling what happens at the Supreme Court. And generally,  when maybe sometime summer-ish.

David:

And just one point of clarification – it’s a California judge?

Tim:

This is a judge in California.

Rick:

Wow.

Tim:

Bakersfield, California. And the judge, the ruling actually came down in favor that celebrating, or cakes, celebrating events are a form of free speech and you cannot compel speech to be a certain way, therefore you can’t compel because it’s an expression of their speech. That is what the judge is arguing, which, could be a different discussion. Because so often now things are the freedom of speech, but have nothing to do with speech. But that’s kind of the way the courts rule these days.

However, I completely agree with the decision and of course there’s protests going on. Nonetheless, of all the places that you think a judge making a decision like this would come from California is about the last place you would point to. So, this is just kind of exciting good news coming out of California. Now, as we mentioned, it could change in a matter of a couple of weeks when the Supreme Court decision comes out. We find out what happens. Of course, we are prayerfully awaiting and hopefully that does not go the way that many fear it will go. Nonetheless, in the time being, a really cool decision coming from California.

Video Game Removes Inappropriate Content and More!

Rick:

A lot of people at home are probably thinking, “€œHow can I not only get more good news, how can I be part of helping to make more good news happen?”€ Best way to do that is to help spread the word, spread this program so that people are encouraged so that they know that when you work this system, when you’re involved in our citizenship here in America, you can get good results. That will produce more good news that we can then share on this program.

So, a couple of ways you can do that, take the link today at our website, WallBuildersLive.com, of this program and share it with your friends or family. Put it on Facebook, send it out on Twitter, and snapchat, and all the social media tools that you have at your fingertips.

And then the other way you can help us is actually contribute to the program. Come alongside us as a financial partner. You can make a monthly donation, become basically one of our promise givers that we know you’re with us throughout the year. And so we can plan accordingly, and add in stations, and spreading the word, and doing some more of our leadership training for legislators, and young people, and other things we do at WallBuilders. Or just make a one time gift, but go to the website, come alongside us, and help us spread this word, help us continue the great work at WallBuilders. Do that a WallBuilders.com today. We appreciate you listening to WallBuilders Live.
